Precautions• If your car has been parked in direct sunlight,
allow the unit to cool off before operating it.• Power antennas will extend automatically
while the unit is operating.
If you have any questions or problemsconcerning your unit that are not covered in thismanual, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.
Moisture condensationOn a rainy day or in a very damp area, moisturecondensation may occur inside the lenses anddisplay of the unit. Should this occur, the unitwill not operate properly. In such a case, removethe disc and wait for about an hour until themoisture has evaporated.
To maintain high sound qualityBe careful not to splash juice or other soft drinksonto the unit or discs.
Notes on discs• To keep the disc clean, do not touch the surface.
Handle the disc by its edge.• Keep your discs in their cases or disc
magazines when not in use.Do not subject the discs to heat/hightemperature. Avoid leaving them in parked carsor on dashboards/rear trays.
• Do not attach labels, or use discs with stickyink/residue. Such discs may stop spinningwhen used, causing a malfunction, or may ruinthe disc.
• Do not use discs with any labels or stickersattached.The following malfunctions may result fromusing such discs:– Inability to eject a disc (due to a label or
sticker peeling off and jamming the ejectmechanism).
– Inability to read audio data correctly (e.g.,playback skipping, or no playback) due toheat shrinking of a sticker or label causing adisc to warp.
• Discs with non-standard shapes (e.g., heart,square, star) cannot be played on this unit.Attempting to do so may damage the unit. Donot use such discs.
• You cannot play 8 cm CDs.

• Before playing, clean the discs with acommercially available cleaning cloth. Wipeeach disc from the centre out. Do not usesolvents such as benzine, thinner, commerciallyavailable cleaners, or antistatic spray intendedfor analog discs.
Notes on CD-R/CD-RW discs• You can play CD-Rs (recordable CDs)/CD-
RWs (rewritable CDs) designed for audio useon this unit.Look for these marks to distinguish CD-Rs/
CD-RWs for audio use.
These marks denote that a disc is not for audiouse.
• Some CD-Rs/CD-RWs (depending on theequipment used for its recording or thecondition of the disc) may not play on this unit.
• You cannot play a CD-R/a CD-RW that is notfinalized*.* A process necessary for a recorded CD-R/CD-RW
disc to be played on the audio CD player.
Getting Started
Resetting the unitBefore operating the unit for the first time, orafter replacing the car battery or changing theconnections, you must reset the unit.Remove the front panel and press the RESETbutton with a pointed object, such as a ball-pointpen.
Note Pressing the RESET button will erase the clock settingand some stored contents.

Detaching the front panelYou can detach the front panel of this unit toprotect the unit from being stolen.
Caution alarmIf you turn the ignition switch to the OFF
position without removing the front panel, thecaution alarm will beep for a few seconds.If you connect an optional amplifier and do notuse the built-in amplifier, the beep sound will bedeactivated.
1 Press (OFF) *.CD/MD playback or radio reception stops(the key illumination and display remain on).* If your car has no ACC position on the ignition
switch, be sure to turn the unit off by pressing(OFF) for 2 seconds to avoid car battery drain.
2 Press (OPEN) , then slide the frontpanel to the right, and gently pull outthe left end of the front panel.
Notes • If you detach the panel while the unit is still turned
on, the power will turn off automatically to preventthe speakers from being damaged.
• Do not drop or put excessive pressure on the frontpanel and its display window.
• Do not subject the front panel to heat/hightemperature or moisture. Avoid leaving it in parkedcar or on a dashboard/rear trays.
Tip
When carrying the front panel with you, use thesupplied front panel case.

Setting the clockThe clock uses a 12-hour digital indication.
Example: To set the clock to 10:08
1 Press (MENU) , then press either sideof (DISC/PRESET) repeatedly until“CLOCK” appears.
1 Press (ENTER) .The hour indication flashes.
2 Press either side of (DISC/PRESET) to set the hour.
3 Press the (+) side of (SEEK) .The minute indication flashes.
4 Press either side of (DISC/PRESET) to set the minute.

The clock starts. After the clock setting iscompleted, the display returns to normal playmode.
Tip When D.INFO mode is set to ON, the time is alwaysdisplayed ( page 18).
CD PlayerCD/MD Unit (optional)In addition to playing a CD with this unit, youcan also control external CD/MD units.
If you connect MP3 playable CD units (eg. MP3CD changer), you can play MP3 files;compressed audio files with quality sound.See“MP3 playable CD Unit (optional)” on page 20.Note If you connect an optional CD unit with the CD TEXTfunction, the CD TEXT information will appear in thedisplay when you play a CD TEXT disc.

(SEEK) is pressed, playback skips to the last/firsttrack of the disc.

Playing tracks repeatedly — Repeat PlayThe disc in the main unit will repeat a track orthe entire disc when it reaches the end. For repeatplay, you can select:• REP-TRACK — to repeat a track.• REP-DISC* — to repeat a disc.
* Available only when one or more optional CD/MDunits are connected.
During playback, press (1) on thecard remote commander repeatedlyuntil the desired setting appears in thedisplay.Repeat Play starts.
To return to normal play mode, select “REP-OFF.”
Playing tracks in randomorder — Shuffle PlayYou can select:• SHUF-DISC — to play the tracks on the
current disc in random order.• SHUF-CHGR*1 — to play the tracks in the
current optional CD (MD) unit in randomorder.
• SHUF-ALL*2 — to play all the tracks in all theconnected CD (MD) units (including this unit)in random order.
*1 Available only when one or more optional CD (MD)units are connected.
*2 Available only when one or more optional CD units,or two or more optional MD units are connected.
During playback, press (2) on the
card remote commander repeatedlyuntil the desired setting appears in thedisplay.Shuffle Play starts.

Labeling a CD — Disc Memo (For a CD unit with theCUSTOM FILE function)You can label each disc with a custom name(Disc Memo). You can enter up to 8 charactersfor a disc. If you label a CD, you can locate thedisc by name (page 12).
1 Start playing the disc you want to labelin a CD unit with the CUSTOM FILEfunction.
2 Press (MENU) , then press either sideof (DISC/PRESET) repeatedly until“NAMEEDIT” appears.
3 Press (ENTER) .
The unit will repeat the disc during thelabeling procedure.
4 Enter the characters.1 Press the (+) *1 side of
(DISC/PRESET) repeatedly to selectthe desired character.

Tips • Simply overwrite or enter “ _” to correct or erase a
name.• There is another way to start labeling a CD: Press
(LIST) for 2 seconds instead of performing steps 2and 3. You can also complete the operation bypressing (LIST) for 2 seconds instead of step 5.
• You can label CDs on a unit without the CUSTOMFILE function if that unit is connected along with aCD unit that has the function. The Disc Memo will bestored in the memory of the CD unit with theCUSTOM FILE function.
Note REP-TRACK/shuffle play is suspended until the NameEdit is complete.
Viewing the Disc MemoAs a display item, the Disc Memo always takespriority over any original CD TEXT information.
Tip To find out about other items that can be displayed,see page 10.
Erasing the Disc Memo
1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select“CD.”
2 Press (MODE) repeatedly to select theCD unit storing the Disc Memo.3 Press (MENU) , then press either side
of (DISC/PRESET) repeatedly until“NAME DEL” appears.
4 Press (ENTER) .The stored names will appear.
5 Press either side of (DISC/PRESET) repeatedly to select the disc name youwant to erase.The stored names will appear.
6 Press (ENTER) for 2 seconds.The name is erased.Repeat steps 5 and 6 if you want to eraseother names.
7 Press (MENU) twice.The unit returns to normal CD play mode.
Notes • When the Disc Memo for a CD TEXT disc is erased,
the original CD TEXT information is displayed.• If you cannot find the Disc Memo you want to erase,try selecting a different CD unit in step 2.
Locating a disc by name — List-up (For a CD unit with the CD TEXT/CUSTOM FILE function, or an MD unit)You can use this function for discs that have beenassigned custom names*1 or for CD TEXTdiscs*2.
*1 Locating a disc by its custom name: when youassign a name for a CD ( page 11 ) or an MD.
*2 Locating discs by the CD TEXT information: whenyou play a CD TEXT disc on a CD unit with the CDTEXT function.
1 Press (LIST) .The name assigned to the current disc appearsin the display.
2 Press either side of (DISC/PRESET) repeatedly until you find the desireddisc.
3 Press (ENTER) to play the disc.Note Some letters cannot be displayed (exception: Disc

RadioThe unit can store up to 6 stations per band(FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2).
CautionWhen tuning in stations while driving, use Best
Tuning Memory to prevent accidents.
Storing stationsautomatically — Best Tuning Memory (BTM)The unit selects the stations with the strongestsignals within the selected band, and stores themin the order of their frequency.
1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to selectthe radio.
2 Press (MODE) repeatedly to select theband.
3 Press (MENU) , then press either sideof (DISC/PRESET) repeatedly until“BTM” appears.
4 Press (ENTER) .A beep sounds when the setting is stored.
Notes • If only a few stations can be received due to weak
signals, some number buttons will retain their formersettings.
• When a number is indicated in the display, the unitstarts storing stations from the one currentlydisplayed.
Receiving the stored stations1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select
the radio.2 Press (MODE) repeatedly to select the
band.
3Press the number button ( (1) to (6) )on the card remote commander onwhich the desired station is stored.
TipPress either side of(DISC/PRESET) to receive thestations in the order they are stored in the memory(Preset Search function).
If preset tuning does not workPress either side of (SEEK) to searchfor the station (automatic tuning).
Scanning stops when the unit receives astation. Repeat until the desired station isreceived.
Tips • If automatic tuning stops too frequently, turn on the
Local Seek to limit seek to stations with strongersignals ( see “Changing the sound and displaysettings” on page 18 ).
• If you know the frequency of the station you want tolisten to, press and hold either side of(SEEK) tolocate the approximate frequency, then press(SEEK) repeatedly to fine adjust to the desiredfrequency (manual tuning).
If FM stereo reception is poorSelect monaural reception mode(see “Changing the sound and displaysettings” on page 18).The sound improves, but becomes monaural(“ST” disappears).
Note If interference occurs, this unit will automaticallynarrow the reception frequency to eliminate noise (IF
AUTO function). In such cases, some FM stereobroadcasts may become monaural while in the stereoreception mode.Tips • To always hear FM stereo broadcasts in stereo, you
can change the IF AUTO setting and widen thefrequency signal reception ( see “Changing thesound and display settings” on page 18 ). Note thatsome interference may occur in this setting.
• If FM broadcasts are difficult to hear, set DSO toOFF ( page 19 ).

Storing only the desiredstationsYou can manually preset the desired stations onany chosen number button.
1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to selectthe radio.2 Press (MODE) repeatedly to select theband.
3 Press either side of (SEEK) to tune inthe station that you want to store.
4 Press the desired number button ( (1) to (6) ) on the card remote commanderfor 2 seconds until “MEM” appears.The number button indication appears in thedisplay.
Note If you try to store another station on the same numberbutton, the previously stored station will be erased.
Storing station names — Station M emoYou can assign a name to each radio station andstore it in memory. The name of the stationcurrently tuned in appears in the display. You canassign a name using up to 8 characters for astation.

Changing the operative directionThe operative direction of controls is factory-setas shown below.
If you need to mount the rotary commander onthe right hand side of the steering column, youcan reverse the operative direction.
Press (SOUND) for 2 seconds whilepushing the VOL control.
Tip You can also change the operative direction of thesecontrols with the unit ( page 18 ).

Setting the equalizer (EQ7)You can select an equalizer curve for 7 musictypes (XPLOD, VOCAL, CLUB, JAZZ, NEWAGE, ROCK, CUSTOM, and OFF (equalizerOFF)).You can store and adjust the equalizer settingsfor frequency and level.

Setting the DynamicSoundstage Organizer (DSO)If your speakers are installed into the lower partof the doors, the sound will come from belowand may not be clear.The DSO (Dynamic Soundstage Organizer)function creates a more ambient sound as if therewere speakers in the dashboard (virtualspeakers).You can store the DSO setting for each source.

M P3 playable CD Unit(optional)This unit can control external MP3 playable CDunits with the CUSTOM FILE functions.If you connect the optional MP3 playable CDunits, you can play discs containing MP3 filesand use the CUSTOM FILE functions (page 11,12).

Maintenance
Fuse replacementWhen replacing the fuse, be sure to use onematching the amperage rating stated on theoriginal fuse. If the fuse blows, check the powerconnection and replace the fuse. If the fuse blowsagain after replacement, there may be an internalmalfunction. In such a case, consult your nearestSony dealer.
WarningNever use a fuse with an amperage ratingexceeding the one supplied with the unit as thiscould damage the unit.
Cleaning the connectorsThe unit may not function properly if theconnectors between the unit and the front panelare not clean. In order to prevent this, detach thefront panel (page 8) and clean the connectorswith a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Do notapply too much force. Otherwise, the connectorsmay be damaged.
Notes • For safety, turn off the ignition before cleaning the
connectors, and remove the key from the ignitionswitch.
• Never touch the connectors directly with your fingersor with any metal device.
Replacing the lithium batteryUnder normal conditions, batteries will lastapproximately 1 year. (The service life may beshorter, depending on the conditions of use.)When the battery becomes weak, the range of thecard remote commander becomes shorter.Replace the battery with a new CR2025 lithiumbattery. Use of any other battery may present arisk of fire or explosion.
Notes on lithium battery• Keep the lithium battery out of the reach of
children. Should the battery be swallowed,immediately consult a doctor.
• Wipe the battery with a dry cloth to assure agood contact.
• Be sure to observe the correct polarity wheninstalling the battery.
• Do not hold the battery with metallic tweezers,otherwise a short-circuit may occur.

Remarques sur les disques• Pour que les disques restent propres, ne touchez
pas leur surface. Manipulez les disques par lesbords.
• Rangez les disques dans leurs boîtiers ouplacez-les dans le chargeur de disqueslorsqu’ils ne sont pas utilisés.Ne soumettez pas les disques à destempératures élevées. Évitez de les laisser dansune voiture stationnée, sur le tableau de bord ousous la lunette arrière.
• N’apposez pas d’étiquettes sur les disques etn’utilisez pas de disques portant de l’encre oudes résidus collants. De tels disques risquentd’arrêter de tourner en cours de lecture et des’endommager ou de provoquer un mauvaisfonctionnement.
• N’utilisez pas de disques qui portent desétiquettes ou des autocollants.Cela risque d’entraîner les problèmes defonctionnement suivants:– Impossibilité d’éjecter un disque (parce que
l’étiquette ou l’autocollant se décolle etbloque le mécanisme d’éjection).
– Impossibilité de lire correctement les donnéesaudio (p. ex : saute de lecture ou pas delecture), parce que la chaleur a fait rétrécirl’autocollant ou l’étiquette, ce qui entraîneune déformation du disque.
• Les disques de forme non standard (p. ex. enforme de cœur, de carré ou d’étoile) ne peuventpas être lus sur cet appareil. N’utilisez pas de
tels disques, car ils pourraient endommager lelecteur.• Vous ne pouvez pas écouter des CD de 8 cm.
• Avant d’insérer les disques dans le lecteur,nettoyez-les avec un chiffon conçu à cet effetdisponible dans le commerce. Essuyez chaquedisque à partir du centre vers l’extérieur.N’utilisez pas de solvants tels que le benzène,les diluants à peinture, les détergents ordinairesou les antistatiques en aérosol destinés auxdisques en vinyle.
Remarques sur les disques CD-R etCD-RW• Cet appareil permet la lecture des disques
CD-R (CD enregistrables) et CD-RW (CDréinscriptibles) destinés à un usage audio.Repérez une des marques ci-dessous pourdistinguer les disques CD-R et CD-RW à usageaudio.

Préparation
Réinitialisation de l’appareilAvant la première utilisation de l’appareil ouaprès avoir remplacé la batterie du véhicule oumodifié les raccordements, vous devezréinitialiser l’appareil.Retirez la façade, puis appuyez sur la toucheRESET avec un objet pointu comme un stylo àbille.
Remarque Une pression sur la touche RESET efface l’heure etcertaines fonctions sauvegardées en mémoire.
Retrait de la façadeVous pouvez retirer la façade de cet appareil pourle protéger contre le vol.
AvertisseurSi vous mettez la clé de contact en position OFF
sans ôter la façade, l’alarme retentit pendantquelques secondes.Si vous raccordez un amplificateur en option etque vous n’utilisez pas l’amplificateur intégré,l’alarme est désactivée.

Remarques • Si vous retirez la façade alors que l’appareil est
toujours sous tension, l’alimentation estautomatiquement coupée de manière à éviterd’endommager les haut-parleurs.
• N’exercez pas de pression excessive sur la façade(y compris l’écran d’affichage) et ne l’échappez pas.
• Ne soumettez pas la façade à une température ou àune humidité élevées. Évitez de la laisser dans unevoiture stationnée, sur le tableau de bord ou sous lalunette arrière.

Lecture d’un disque(Avec cet appareil)
1 Appuyez sur (OPEN) et insérez ledisque en plaçant le côté imprimé versle haut.
2 Fermez la façade.La lecture commence automatiquement.Pour commencer la lecture si un disque se trouvedéjà dans l’appareil, appuyez plusieurs fois sur(SOURCE) jusqu’à ce que l’indication “CD”s’affiche.
Remarques • Lorsque la première ou la dernière piste du disque
est en lecture, si vous appuyez sur la touche(SEEK) , la lecture saute à la dernière ou à lapremière piste du disque.

Identification d’un CD — Fonction Disc Memo (pour un lecteur CDdisposant de la fonction CUSTOM FILE)Vous pouvez donner à chaque disque un nomunique avec la fonction de mémo de disque. Il estpossible d’entrer jusqu’à 8 caractères pourchaque disque. Lorsque vous identifiez un CDavec cette fonction, vous pouvez ensuite lelocaliser par son nom (page 13).
1 Commencez à écouter le disque quevous souhaitez identifier dans unlecteur CD disposant de la fonctionCUSTOM FILE.
2 Appuyez sur (MENU) , puis appuyezplusieurs fois sur l’un des côtés de(DISC/PRESET) jusqu’à ce quel’indication “NAMEEDIT” s’affiche.
3 Appuyez sur (ENTER) .
L’appareil répète la lecture du disque au coursde la procédure d’identification.

• Vous pouvez identifier les CD à l’aide d’un appareilne disposant pas de la fonction CUSTOM FILE si cetappareil est raccordé à un lecteur CD disposant decette fonction. Le mémo du disque sera alorssauvegardé dans la mémoire de l’appareil doté de lafonction CUSTOM FILE.
Remarque Les fonctions de lecture REP-TRACK/aléatoire sontinterrompues jusqu’à ce que l’identification du disquesoit terminée.
Affichage du mémo de disqueEn tant que rubrique d’affichage, le mémo dedisque est toujours affiché en priorité par rapportaux informations CD TEXT d’origine.

Localisation d’un disque parson nom — Affichage automatique des titres (pour unlecteur CD disposant de la fonction CD TEXT/CUSTOM FILE ou pour un lecteur MD)Vous pouvez utiliser cette fonction pour lesdisques auxquels vous avez attribué des noms*1 ou pour les disques CD TEXT*2.

Mémorisation automatiquedes stations — Mémorisation des meilleurs accords(BTM)L’appareil sélectionne les stations dont lessignaux sont les plus puissants dans la bandesélectionnée et les mémorise selon l’ordre desfréquences.
1 Appuyez plusieurs fois sur (SOURCE) pour sélectionner la radio.
2 Appuyez plusieurs fois sur (MODE) pour sélectionner la bande.

• Si vous connaissez la fréquence de la station quevous désirez écouter, appuyez et maintenez enfoncél’un des côtés de(SEEK) pour syntoniser lafréquence approximative, puis appuyez plusieursfois sur(SEEK) pour régler avec précision lafréquence souhaitée (syntonisation manuelle).
Si la réception stéréo FM est mauvaiseSélectionnez le mode de réceptionmono.(voir “Modification des réglages du son et del’affichage” à la page 18).La qualité sonore est améliorée, mais le sonest diffusé en mode mono (l’indication “ST”disparaît).
Remarque Si des interférences surviennent, cet appareil réduiraautomatiquement la bande de fréquence captée pouréliminer les parasites (fonction IF AUTO). Dans cecas, certaines émissions FM peuvent passer enréception mono, même si le mode de réception stéréoest activé.
Conseils • Pour toujours écouter les émissions stéréo FM en
stéréo, vous pouvez modifier le réglage de lafonction IF AUTO et étendre la fréquence deréception du signal ( voir “Modification des réglagesdu son et de l’affichage” à la page 18). Notezcependant que des interférences peuvent alors seproduire.
• Si vous avez de la difficulté à entendre les émissionsFM, réglez DSO à OFF ( page 20 ).
Mémorisation des stationssouhaitées uniquementVous pouvez présélectionner manuellement lesstations souhaitées sur les touches de votre choix.
1 Appuyez plusieurs fois sur (SOURCE) pour sélectionner la radio.
2 Appuyez plusieurs fois sur (MODE) pour sélectionner la bande.3 Appuyez sur l’un des côtés de (SEEK)
pour syntoniser la station que vousvoulez mémoriser.
4 Appuyez sur la touche numériquesouhaitée sur la mini-télécommande((1) à (6) ) pendant 2 secondesjusqu’à ce que l’indication “MEM”s’affiche.Le numéro de la touche s’affiche à l’écran.

Mémorisation des noms destation — Fonction de mémoire des stationsVous pouvez attribuer un nom à chaque stationde radio et le sauvegarder en mémoire ; ils’affiche ensuite à l’écran lorsque la station estsyntonisée. Le nom attribué à la station peutcomprendre jusqu’à 8 caractères.

1 Syntonisez une station dont vousvoulez mémoriser le nom.

2 Réglez le paramètre sélectionné enappuyant sur un des cotés de (SEEK) .Pour effectuer le réglage à l’aide du satellite

Atténuation rapide du son(à l ’aide du satell ite de commande ou de lamini-télécommande)
Appuyez sur la touche (ATT) dusatellite de commande ou de la mini-télécommande.L’indication “ATT-ON” s’affiche brièvementà l’écran, puis “ATT” s’affiche.
Pour restaurer le niveau de volume précédent,appuyez de nouveau sur la touche(ATT) .Conseil Lorsque le câble de jonction d’un téléphone de voitureest raccordé au fil ATT, l’appareil réduitautomatiquement le volume lors d’un appeltéléphonique entrant (fonction ATT du téléphone).

sens de fonctionnement du satellite decommande.– Sélectionnez “NORM” pour utiliser le
satellite de commande dans le sens par défaut.– Sélectionnez “REV” lorsque vous installez le
satellite de commande à la droite du volant.• P.OUT-4.0V/5.5V— pour modifier la tension
de pré-sortie de l’amplificateur de puissance à
4,0 V ou 5,5 V. Ne peut être sélectionné quelorsque l’appareil est éteint (CDX-CA720Xuniquement).
Remarque Si le volume est réglé à un niveau très élevé lorsquel’appareil est raccordé à un amplificateur depuissance, le son peut présenter une distorsion. Sicela se produit, réglez P.OUT à “4.0V”.
