North Walsall Bus Network Review

Centro has been undertaking a review of customer requirements for a successful bus network across the West Midlands to provide better services and leading to increased bus patronage. This review has led to Centro working with partners to transform bus travel throughout the conurbation. Research has identified that key criteria for success include an easy-to-understand network and improvements in quality. Centro is leading a review of the commercial and subsidised bus networks within each area alongside local authorities and bus operators, as directed within the Local Transport Act 2008, to ensure that we maximise the passenger benefits from the available resource within each network. This includes a process of sitting down with all of the bus operators who are participating in the partnership and agreeing to run services at even intervals with agreed service numbers to ensure that it is easy for passengers to understand the network. This process has been undertaken in Dudley, South Solihull and South Birmingham. In each area it has been accompanied by a series of improvements in information provision and some simplification of services including ensuring that evening and Sunday service numbers match those of the daytime services. In Dudley the review has led to increased patronage, and in South Birmingham it has lead to a much easier to understand network of services. In Solihull operators have created a series of local routes and numbers which easily identifies them to passengers. A key component is the voluntary agreement that commits all signatories to providing quality improvements on the network. North Walsall has some major bus services with high frequencies. This review aims to build on this existing good network of services, looking at commercial opportunities to provide even better, coordinated services. For your reference a map of the current bus network in North Walsall is enclosed showing the services and frequencies that are provided. You may wish to consult this map prior to making any further comments or suggestions. There are two maps, one of which shows the Monday-Saturday daytime services and frequencies and the further map showing the evening and Sunday services and frequencies.

Consultation Centro has taken a more detailed approach to consultation in the North Walsall area compared to previous network reviews. In December 2009 a series of focus group meetings were held with residents and bus customers in locations including Brownhills, Bloxwich, Aldridge, Streetly and Walsall. The focus groups have included minority groups, disability groups, current bus customers, and none bus customers who represent the potential market for public transport. During January 2010 Centro, Walsall MBC and bus operators have held a series of public exhibitions in the North Walsall area to ask for public comments and views on the current bus network, as well as requesting customer feedback on where the network could be improved. Public consultation closed on the 29th January, to date Centro has received a large number of responses and this information is currently being analysed. The top line results of the focus groups and public consultation have been included in this document for your information. Following the consultation there will be further discussion between Walsall MBC, Centro and bus operators in order to ensure that any changes are outlined and agreed between all partners in plenty of time to provide passenger information ahead of the service revision date on April 25th 2010. Once any changes are agreed then all partners will provide a combined leaflet that will be distributed to all households within the review area outlining the changes and improvements to the network. The leaflet will also list a series of further exhibitions and dates where members of the public can access new timetables and information during April, ahead of the introduction of new services. During April timetables will also be made available from Centro and National Express travel shops, and also available to download from www.networkwestmidlands.com/busreview. Centro and partners will undertake press advertising in early April as well as the poster campaign on buses and at bus stops. Quality Improvements The bus operators, Walsall MBC and Centro have been in discussion to agree some of the potential quality improvements that will be provided in combination with the network review outlined above.

Investment will be made in the vehicle fleets which serve the North Walsall network area. Some operators have pledged to bring newer buses into their fleet and to refurbish existing vehicles. A knock-on effect of this will be that buses within North Walsall will generally become cleaner and greener. To add to this, drivers on some services will receive ‘eco training’ which will both provide a smoother, more comfortable journey experience for passengers, and further reduce vehicle emissions. To improve and maintain the ambiance of trips, operators will be making a number of changes. Vehicle cleaning frequencies, both outside and on the interior will be increased. More CCTV will be added to buses and patrols by the Safer Travel Police team will be increased to make journeys even safer. Some operators have agreed to provide satellite tracking of their buses. This provides several enhancements including improved service reliability and the possibility of providing real-time travel information to users at stops, in bus stations, on-line and via mobile phones, all delivered through the Network West Midlands brand. Through the partnership operators and Centro are committed to providing a joined up approach to passenger information leaflets and timetables, providing comprehensive multi operator literature that allows passengers to understand ALL services that are available to them and not just those of one operator. This is supported through the Network ticket range of products that allows passengers to use all buses and not just those of one operator. Additionally, improved interchange information will be provided in an easy to understand format. Finally, all the bus network review partners in North Walsall are jointly committed to operating and marketing the refined service network and they have pledged to improve the overall quality of services across the network. All of this will be delivered through the UK’s first Voluntary Multi-lateral Agreement (VMA), as set out within the Transport Act 2008, to be signed at the time of the network review in April. Next steps If you have not already done so then we would ask you to complete the form provided in the back of this pack and return it Centro as soon as possible, but no later than 12th February 2010. Once the network review is completed then we will send you a further map with the proposed changes included for your information with an explanatory note. In the meantime should you have any comments or questions then please do not hesitate to contact any of the partners as listed in the back of this document.

Better vehicles and stops

Make sure vehicles are accessible to elderly etc

move the bus stop on chase road going northwards to reduce distance from Newtown. Also provide better bus shelter.

Timetable information at Walsall bus station - screens often show incorrect information eg 346 - lists buses operated by Thandi. This also applies to various other timetables mostly to Thandi (346 stop at Bloxwich).

NX and Arriva buses acceptable standard. Thandi are small cramped and often well below the standard.

More single decker buses

346 stand at Walsall Bus Station is out in the cold

394 - Replace single decker with double decker vehicles

346 - More accessible buses.

340/341replace double deckers with single deckers due to over crowding

Reinstate services/routes

direct Aldridge link from Cannock. Removing some housing estates from the 997 & 56 56A - bus should be restored during the day.. Streetly has an expanding elderly population. Aldride Anchor Meadow centre provides many services for Streetly medical practices, eg physiotherapy and chiropody, yet these are not accessible by bus from Streetly.

The 56 used to be 20 mins daytime (now 30) and 30min (now hourly)evening frequency

bring back 392 & 393 evening services 301 302- reinstate direct link from Bloxwich Rd/Leamore area to Sainsburys Beechdale. Better direct links between Bloxwich and Brownhills

Get the X51 to stop at Jesson Road, just as the 951

Re-instate 991 - replacement service worse than ever

Simplifying timetables/network

377/377a/377b - why do they need to change route

304, 304a - Uneven schedule leads to bunching. Also gaps in service provision eg 1940hh - 1815hh.

329/319 - Change of evening times.

560 - Better 'spacing out' of services

Integrated/all operator/cross boundary ticketing

N-Bus cards & Centro cards are not valid passed the county b

993, 377 - Integrated ticketing/smartcard

concern is with the waste that is contained within the Brownhills routes. Before the latest National Express cutbacks (a constant theme of their's on the Walsall Wood routes since take over in mid 90's when more communities were served and less wastage applied). For example, the 394B wastes 30 minutes in a two hour period sitting (often engine on at non Walsall destination I guess for driver to keep warm). Why isn't the time better utilised running as could similar to the 61 (Walsall Lichfield service by Arriva). No extra drivers are needed, no extra buses on route, just better utilisation of the resource. Again, the 394 wastes considerable time waiting at destinations before its intended departure. 44 minutes (weekday) is what the service actually needs not the 1 hour given (nor the 25 minutes each way on schedule- they used to be 22 minutes before the latest cutbacks and the 61 does it in 22 minutes). Even allowing for catch up time, a bus sitting doing nothing is a n the evening (the 58 minutes in schedule does not reflect how quickly that bus arrives in Walsall of an evening), the 394 has no problem even if it remains linked with the 366. .

394/394A/394B

Buses not to repeat Journey in Brownhills down to A5 Rising Sun and then back again of an evening and Sundays. This could be better routed not to repeat the some journey. adds far more to the Journey. Continued use of Friezland Lane.

Burntwood - Lichfield - Brownhills area

could we have one straight from yew tree to west Bromwich also could be have a bus service from yew tree to Scott arms

405 to west Bromwich

They seem to travel in 2s as West Midlands and Diamond Bus seem to operate same time table. 1. Arriva.Cannock to Walsall.(Chase Route )redirect Route Along Tunbury Rd.>Bell Lane> High St Bloxwich. Then follow the A34 Sommerfield Rd /Green Lane into Walsall.

301.

351, Is there any way the service could be diverted via Reedswood Retail Park, as the distance from the main A34 Green Lane to there is unacceptable, certainly for the elderly. (You used to be able to walk round to Bloxwich Road in Leamore & catch the old 370/371 circular services via Bloxwich to Reedswood & back, but since those services were altered to run Walsall, Beechdale, Dudleys Fields & Bloxwich & return, our visits there have been limited.) I would like to know what the long term future for the 351 is, as this service runs into Staffordshire & National Express have withdrawn or downgraded other Staffordshire services over the past few years. (Perhaps with local journeys, maybe some of the Bloxwich Road buses could be diverted via Somerfield Road?) Service 326 - I start work in Willenhall at 830am & finish at 5pm. While it is just about possible to get between Bloxwich & Willenhall before 830am, it is impossible for the return journey, as the last journey is 445pm. (In an ideal world, how about a Bloxwich to Willenhall route via the 351 route as far as Reedswood Retail

326 ( I work in Willenhall!) & 351(I live on that route, but mainly catch 301 & 302, between Bloxwich & Walsall, as those are more frequent!)

Park, then via Reedswood Way, Bentley, Lodge Farm, then into Willenhall in that direction, then I could catch it outside my house!)

Have two interlinked routes between Walsall Cannock and or Hednesford. A 10 minute interlinked frequency Monday-Friday peek with the two routes, a 15/20/30 minutes Monday-Saturday daytimes, up to every 30 minutes Monday - Saturday evenings with last service leaving Cannock at 00:02 towards Walsall Thursday-Sunday mornings and every 30 minutes Sunday daytimes with hourly Sunday evenings. Service x51 to be re assigned to run up to Hednesford, but more than just 3 journeys departing ONLY one-way. As this was the downfall of the old timetables.

For NXWM to provide all the journeys on route 351.

I travel from Sutton Coldfield to Brownhills This is becoming virtual impossible as I have to travel away from Sutton Coldfield to Walsall to get a bus to Sutton Coldfield. There used to be a bus 995 which ran via the Chester Road. What I have always said is a bus should be run limited stop from Sutton Coldfield - Banners Gate then directly up the Chester Road into Brownhills, this bus could then run via Norton Canes Village into Cannock and then possibility onto Hednesford. As there is no NXWM link between Sutton and Brownhills this would be an ideal route for them. Plus it would give them an opportunity to rival Arriva in this area and take passengers from the South Cannock and North Walsall area into Sutton Coldfield and visa-versa.

A limited stop route (as 951A) running from the Cannock area directly into Birmingham City Centre, provided during Monday-Saturday daytimes

351

Service X51 (Cannock extension) should be renumbered 951A as until recently we have always know that the '9' in-fount of a service number means limited-stop route. The renumbering is confusing as other X51 journeys finish in Walsall. The X51 should be renumbered 951 as it was always. I do see the advantage of having the X at the fount of the service number. However, I do see a need for having a service number that resembles one-another i.e having route number X51 and 951A are totally far apart from one-another.

X51 (Cannock extensions)

From Hundred Acre Road, down Bridle Lane and then Chester Road to terminus.

993

I use routes that link Cannock and Walsall with Sutton Coldfield. There is bus link which links Sutton Coldfield with Brownshill. National Express West Midlands pulled their 396 and as this route didnt really go anywhere effectively, thus wouldnt have been used that much. Now If TWM have this route say ran from Hednesford via Pye Green to Cannock (it can pick up shoppers, kids, workers etc and the of a night clubbers) from here it can travel via Norton Canes village to Brownshills then directly via Chester Road North and Chester Road to Banners Gate, where it will operate express via New Oscott to Sutton Coldfield shops.

351 and X56

Route should link with Sutton Coldfield via Lichfield Road, then via Dimbles Lane (present 991A route) in both directions to Walsall. This route should be run every half hour but National Express West Midlands, as their travel cards can be used across the area

991

The 367 and 368 bus services take almost exactly the same route, however, the 368 continues on to castlefort. I feel that the leighswood section of the 368 route should be removed as there is no point in having it in the journey, and this will speed up the journey, and allow a more frequent timetable. Also, it will save money on fuel. I finish school at half past 3 in walsall, and i miss the bus by about 2 minutes, causing me to have to wait for another half an hour. In the winter, this isnt a very pleasant experience as it is cold, and dark. If the bus service was changed as suggested, or the bus arrived in walsall at 3:35, then this will not affect the origional bus route. PLEASE.

368

The 377 originally travelled along the Aldridge Road past Foley Arms and turned into Bridle Lane which enables lots of people in that area to use the bus. There is a block of flats at the junction of Aldridge Road/Bridle Lane which houses mostly elderly residents, I don't know how they manage to reach Walsall or Sutton Coldfield. I recently went shopping into Walsall and had so much I had to pay £10 taxi fare back to Maxholm Road as I couldn't carry it all back with a 20 minute walk in front of me.

All Route 951 should be extended to Hednesford. Early peak workings which run between Walsall and Hednesford and late peak journeys from Hednesford towards Walsall National Express Bus Garage near to the stops on either Green lane or Bloxwich Road of Beatrice Street. Possible idea all 351 journeys run from the town centre, Bloxwich Road, then Beatrice Street, Stafford Road to Bloxwich and then directly up Stafford Road across the county border into Landywood and Cheslyn Hay where services will continue into Cannock and where 351 journeys run to Hawks Green and 951 journeys extend onto Hednesford via Pye Green.

351 and 951

Route 351 to have a new variant 351A; Half-Hourly frequency. From Hednesford via Pye Green, Hawks Heath, Cannock Shops, then via Cannock Train Station into Great Wyrley and the East parts of Landywood then, out onto the Walsall Road, onto Stafford Road and then direct via Bloxwhich to Walsall. The 351 slotted in half-hourly can be then re-routed in the Landywood are and Cheslyn Hay to pick parts of the villages that do not have a bus

Individual comments made Bus route(s)

Burntwood - Lichfield - Brownhills area

There are many buses that leave Walsall Bus Station between 1700-1800, but there's a sudden drop after 1800. This is compounded by the fact that in the evenings the 329 leaves at 45 and 15 minutes past the hour, and the 319 at 48 minutes past the hour. As both services serve roughly the same area once they get to Harden/Goscote/Blakenall, it'd be great if, in the evenings, the 319 could leave on the hour, or 30 minutes past.

329/319

If this (995) route ran up to Cannock then this would be perfect to have the last departures from Sutton at 23:07 - Hednesford @ 00:00 & Sutton 00:02 - Cannock @ 00:39 and from Hednesford 00:00 - New Oscott @ 00:40 & Cannock 00:39 - New Oscott 01:09. This is for the clubbers at at both ends of the route.

Services 351 and 51 should be linked together to provide a through service from Birmingham to Cannock throughout the day and not just at peak times. The Birmingham to Cannock service should run as an extension of the 51 and not the X51 so that it can serve the One Stop shopping centre.

351,51

Walsall bus station was a disgrace when it opened - it is even worse now - routes going to the same place will depart from different stands. Why build a new bus interchange at Bradford street - as big a waste of money as the main bus station. Interchange with rail is a disgrace - there should be one bus station with DIRECT access to railway station - the old bus stands are located directly over the main line railway platforms, so why no direct staircase / escalator ??

All

Route should link with Sutton Coldfield via Lichfield Road, then via Dimbles Lane (present 991A route) in both directions to Walsall. This route should be run every half hour but National Express West Midlands, as their travel cards can be used across the area even if the route travels outside of the West Midlands County. This way the route is an incentive to National Express West Midlands, unlike before. Possibly the route to be run hourly on a Sunday during Shopping times.

To get to the Manor Hospital involves walking to the stops at Bradford Street, usually with about 5 minutes or less to do it.

Route 351, 351A, 951 and 951A should all be provided by National Express West Midlands as this can provide better integrated interchanging of buses within the Centro are with neighbouring Cannock Chase County. Route 351A to directly serve Hednesford, Cannock and Bloxwich Train Station's. Route 351 to directly serve Landywood, Bloxwich North, Train Station's Route 951A to directly serve Hednesford, Cannock, Landywood and Bloxwich Train Station's.

Route 394 in Brownhills West, 394A, 394B and 395 in Brownhills Shops, route 991 (or 903) at Chester Road with Lichfield Road near Walsall Woods, 993, 994 in Streetly, the 377 in Old Oscott and 377, 451, 907 in New Oscott area and All Sutton Coldfiled services in the Sutton Coldfield town Centre. This route would give a much needed link between Brownhills and Sutton Coldfield, as there is no link that linking these towns shopping centres, or other surrounding areas.

• Congestion on Bradford Place mainly caused by operators on the same route suggest 404 and 405 be completely handed to Dimmond with Nat Exp running 404 between West Brom and Cradley Heath this would improve journey times also Walsall to Darlaston operators need to be checked as there are currently to many

• 3 quick queries: Morning to Walsall: 0725 and 0755, 808 and 825. then every 10 minutes throughout day. This made sense when Chase Buses ran a 10 minute service during the morning peak. I can't believe a less frequent service in the morning peaks compared to

evenings and Sundays for Street Corner is sensible. 394 Early Evening to Walsall from Streets Corner: This annoys me. 17:25 the next service 19:15. Prior to this every 20 mins, after every 30 mins. I am sad enough to realise this and would check the timetable. Lots of people don't and don't read the timetable. Their fault but surely you want to encourage them to use buses especially at a stop with such a huge catchment area. I realise that other operators do offer services during this gap and two stops down the route at Walsall Wood there is a 20 mins service but many don't. As the major provider with a public service commitment, this doesn't help those with WMT passes I see waiting when a rival bus the buses as you can see BUT I want to. I work in Tamworth (no coverage from here not a surprise really, can't see the demand) which rules out Weekday daytime services for me. I want buses Evenings and weekends to Aldridge and oddly Alumwell which has no evening service at all. To get to Aldridge on a Saturday, Sunday or evening, I use the car. Sunday morning's is hopeless. At every hour, you really have to work around the buses. Alternatively, I can jump in the car at 10:00 or whenever rather than waiting for the two buses to come at once. I have used the 991 on a Saturday but the infrequent nature means again that you work around it to get to Lichfield not use it when convenient

• Better Branding and more partnerships, better and more services crossing from West Midlands into Staffordshire by One company not several as this has an impact in price due to cross boundary covering by tickets and passes. More Staffordshire services run by National Express West Midlands

• The 301/302 buses are often full and around Christmas I waited 50 minutes and three buses went past me full and then I was unable to get a bus home due to massive queues at Walsall bus station.

• 329 service has in the mornings is fantastic - it's rarely any more than a minute early or late. The new buses on the route are really good too. The frequency after 1800 (even if it's just until 1900 or so) could be better. Also, I'm still disappointed in the withdrawal of the 951 service. The withdrawal seemed to have two results - firstly to simply make more money for Travel WM, by forcing people to take two buses to Birmingham instead of one, and secondly, slow the trip from Bloxwich to Birmingham down by forcing a change onto the 51 in Walsall While I mention the 51 (and I realise this isn't a North Walsall thing, but I though I'd mention it as you're listening!) the service in the mornings since the introduction of the new timetable on the 29th November 2009 has been great. However, the evening return service has been really poor. Waits of 20 minutes and more are not uncommon, and just before Christmas I had the misfortune to see four 51s pass in a 2 minute window. The 51 route electronic information boards are also a problem, as they only represent the waiting time to

• something like 5 minutes either side of the bus's actual arrival. For a service that's meant to be running every 7-8 minutes, that's pretty poor. If you can pass that on to someone involved in the 51, I'd be very grateful.

• It is a matter of fact that we had much better bus services to Walsall when there was competition on the route, as in Chase Coaches. When Chase Coaches 364 service was withdrawn West Midlands Travel found it possible to cut its own frequencies and put on smaller buses - "back to monopoly rubbish".

• sometimes the 301 is delayed or completely misses out due to lack of driver. Also you sometimes have three buses following each other and then you have to wait for the next bus.

• some need more frequencies and some made long and shortened

• Do not change the routes especially after the mess that was made in dudley. It now takes 3 times for me to get to work. And double the fare.

• late night service and Sunday service is none existent nice to see a west mids bus on a night always have to pay more for an nbus ticket not made of money do west mids know what headlights are

• the network needs to be less confusing, maps etc show numerous bus services along certain routes but only one of them is running at any one time. for example I have recently

tried to get from Bloxwich to Aldridge and found there were 2 bus services doing that route... and then found that actually they were both one-a-day services during rush hour and of no use. If an area is served by a bus service all day, why can it not be the same bus service all day and not a completely different one doing a different route in the evening

• Is there any possibility that a version of the NBUS card could be made available for the 'Black Country' area(matching the National Express WM Faresaver card!), as National Express WM seem to be withdrawing routes & being replaced by other operators, who cannot accept NEWM passes, eg Arriva & Choice / Midland & the current countywide NBUS is a little expensive when you only travel within the 'Black Country' area. (The likes of Diamond & Midland Rider, who accept the National Express passes with additional 50p/60p payment is a good idea in principle, but it does mount up!)

• Please make schools introduce a warden service on buses that are filled with their pupils in order to have the pupils behave better. Introduce an Oyster card! Makes boarding quicker and is more convenient than cash.

• Travel West Midlands service over the past years are worse than every, we are now in a credit crunch. Thus, I am TOTALY Dissatisfied with they way that service are provided by other operators in a number of cases. TWM services have been cut, reduced and service around the West Midlands/Neighbouring Counties. This has made me want to drive, not use the buses and if you are committed in improving public transport, ALL of these cross boundary routes that have been cut by TWM and 60% of all other get replaced by TWM.

• I am so opposed to Midland and Arriva running these Cannock routes, as I travel into Birmingham and travel cards are a in nightmare when traveling across areas. As Arriva's provides the majority of ALL services in Cannock & Hednesford, they dont hold a vast number of services in the Centro area, thus it would make it IMPASSABLE for me to get to work unless National Express West Midlands ran the routes.

• National Express West Midlands needed a route that links Brownhills with Sutton Coldfield, as at the moment some people need to get a bus, to get a bus, to get another bus before they reach Brownhills and they possibly traveled from Mere Green; totally stupid in my mind and would put me off using the bus and is not public transport for the better.

• Aldridge school pupils should have their own bus route from Walsall to Aldridge school as the 368 at around 8am often becomes over crowded.

• I am dissatisfied with not being able to use my TWM travel card at curtain times, and do not appreciate having Choice now providing some of the daytime service and then Arriva providing the evening and Sunday service on route 351. I am total dissatisfied that Travel West Midlands is reducing from my route; and want TWM to have total operations on routes 351 and 951.

• The route along my road dose not service Cannock during evenings and Sundays, when I need a bus I have to mess around with two different bus operates and this is stupid that route 351 runs via Turnberry Road daytimes but not during other times.

• I believe that ALL routes should be run like London in a form or partnership between Centro and the operator. That way Centro can have total control of the networks from the buses used, to the timetables, the frequencies of each route, fares charges on each route and right down to the routes themselves. This is the only way that buses can be realistically implemented for the better. We need regulation of 'the bus operators', if we have another decade with services, routes and timetables in the hands of the operators, kiss goodbye to better bus services. The only way forward is dictation.

• The bus should be available in the evening and on Sundays linking Walsall and Sutton Coldfield via Streetly as it does during the day. The day service is good, but I do not expect such frequency during the evening until 11 pm or Sunday. Half an hour or hourly reliable service would be better than nothing at all as now, which is appalling. Not everybody in Streetly owns a car.

• The Streetly to Birmingham bus service is very confusing, the bus changes its number and route 3 times during the day. Very poor service in the Chester Road/Bridle Lane area.

• We also need direct bus services to Birmingham

• The current route from Blackwood drive to the terminus has narrow roads and causes difficulty for the bus to navigate turns, other parked vehicles. Also the recent bad weather has resulted in this part of the route not being served due to these conditions adding to the risk of accident/the route being impassable. Furthermore, the service should be more frequent in peak hours than 20 mins

• The 394 service arrives on time about 2 days out 5

• Streetly could be better served. There is a myth that all residents of Streetly have cars..this is not so as the population ages. 2) Streetly is a Walsall suburb, but there is not evening or Sunday bus service to Walsall, or to Sutton Coldfield. 3) The every 20 minute 992, 993, 994 bus services are welcomed...but no evening service or Sunday. These services and their predecessors eg 996 are changed too frequently. When changed there is little or no advance publicity causing many frail and elderly puzzled and confused at bus stops no longer served eg Bridle Lane/Chester Road junction. The last cahnge also was made worse since many bus shelter time times and bus stop notices were mis labelled. 4) The 994 can no longer be considered a fast bus, since it wanders round so many roads, some of which are well served by another bus service. 5) The S1 service is again welcomed...but in the rush hours the drivers have an impossible job to keep to timetable. 6) Please note m y wife will probably also submit comments...as a totally independent person with her own views. She uses the bus more frequently than I and used to use the evening now none existent service to Walsall from Streetly, as did my son when he lived with us. I mention this only as we both use the same e mail address but our comments are separate.

• There needs to be a crackdown on people smoking on buses (mainly upstairs on double deckers), even when the driver is informed they do not do anything.

• Now if this new route was provided half-hourly Monday - Saturday and during Monday - Saturday evening the route ran every hour, would pick up clubbers from the area traveling in both directions. I would be the first person on the service if this was to go ahead as there is no link from the Sutton Coldfield area. The last departures from Hednesford could be midnight and a later one which would terminate at Cannock, from Sutton Coldfield at around 1240ish but only as far as New Oscott, where the bus can then travel back to the Perry Barr bus garage.

• Not enough routes provided by National Express West Midlands,

• service 377 is excellent S1 service is also a big improvement

• The bus service from the corner of Bridle Lane and Manor Road is non existent for Walsall, Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield and Erdington

• I would like to see an evening service to/from the sutton coldfield & birmingham CC and also from train station

• During bad ice and snow grit Blackwood Drive, Lowlands Avenue and Hazelwood Road

• we have to get two buses to get to local shops, drs, chemists etc

• Bring back 113 - direct service. Need better Sunday, evening services. Need flexibility of smartcard for all operators. Tackle congestion eg move buses off Hazelwood Road. x56 needs to be more frequent. Improve bus quality

• Reroute 993 or 994 back to Chester Road

• Give Streetly a decent bus service.

• Other operators should follow Diamond buses example and offer excellent fares, give change (why should Travel West Midlands pocket my money!!), and charge just 50p for passengers with tickets for services run by other operators. Carrs Lane bus stop is

unsafe and unsecure. Fights break out near it, passengers are exposed. The new pavement is very slippery in ice. All bus stops should have real time information so that those of us who use evening services know when the bus is delayed. There should be a phone line to contact to find out where the bus is.

• evening services have over the years have been reduced or ended on most routes causing inconvenience for people working late

• The 997, from Birmingham, alternatively terminates at Aldridge and Walsall. The bus that terminates at Birmingham seems to be particularly unreliable it is often the case that it just does not turn up. E.g. The 997 from the High Street Birmingham on 15th January 2010 at 1547 did not turn up at all, I had to wait till the next scheduled bus at 1620, a wait of more than half an hour. This is a frequent occurrence on this route

• Would be useful in the mornings during the week, if the bus service was every 20 mins, the service has gone downhill since Arriva pulled out and we are now left with a half hourly service which is not always reliable in the morning. If the 8.12 from Bloxwich does not show up its then a scramble to another bus stop to try and get into Walsall! It was a fantastic service when the buses were every 15 mins, that way if one was missed out it was not too much trouble to catch the next one!

• Service X51 to via Walsall to Cannock should be renumbered 951A and the X51 to be renumbered in-line with the Cannock extensions. New routes such as 950 and 952 and 953 which ran up through the North Walsall are to be reintroduced. These time-savers should use small vehicles, that way they can be interworked with the Walsall - Birmingham express service, while maintaining adequate resources for the routes, due other National Express service demands.

• National Express West Midlands to run all journeys on the 351 route.

• The 396 could link Cannock and Hednesford as well; provided by National Express West Midlands.

• Better co-ordination between Arriva and NXWM

• Could 560 serve Wolverhampton bus station to allow better interchange between buses

• Provide a bus station in Brownhills with toilet facilities

• the buses from Bloxwich to Brownhills are situated in a dangerous spot - needs to be looked into

• To get to the Manor Hospital involves walking to the stops at Bradford Street, usually with about 5 minutes or less to do it.

• 56 - Often buses between 7 - 8.00 am do not turn up, as only single decker people have to stand like today from Streetly. The heaters don't seem to work or not on.

• 368 - bus needs to be a double decker, and there is no room for a lot of people on a single decker, and the bus just drives past you, like its ignoring you.

• 377 Please bring back a bus service that helps the people in Streetly (Aldridge Road end) to get comfortably into Walsall and Sutton Coldfield without a long jaunt with heavy bags. Do you realise we are just cut off here from a decent bus service to either of these towns.

• Put a double decker bus on the 377 service before and after school. I have caught this bus every day for 5 years and have never got a seat as the bus is full! If it were possible for me to get home without using the bus i would certainly do so as the journey is atrocious. It is ridiculous that the 377 busses run more frequently during the day when less people use them, then after 3 o'clock when school children want to get home they are supposed to come every 20 minutes, but come even less frequently.

• At the moment the 529 bus route is diabolical! At one time you could rely on this bus route, not any more.

• For route 903 to be provided by National Express West Midlands would mean better integrated transport across the West Midlands and neighbouring South Staffordshire,

Page 20: Cdgi] LVahVaa 7jh CZildg` GZk^Zl ?VcjVgn - Bus Partnership Consultation Fin… · Cdgi] LVahVaa 7jh CZildg` GZk^Zl?VcjVgn '%&% JAN1029. North Walsall Bus Network Review Centro has

when it comes to ticketing. Route 903 could also be extended into Birmingham via the 904 route. However, route 903 could actually operate limited-stop only, stopping at the Horse and Jockey, Wylde Green Shops, Erdington 6Ways, Gravelly Hill The Mount, Aston Fire Station and Birmingham City Centre.

• 319a Increase frequency from every 30 mins to every 20 mins

• 340/341 - put doulble decker buses back on at peak time and try to make then come on time

• 346 & 347 come togather - if you miss them you have to wait 30 mins

• 351A needs 20 minutes frequency

• Route 991 to be renumbered National Express West Midlands service 903. From Outbound route to The Friary, then via The Weston Road section into Lichfield, out into Birmingham Road and via the A5127 into Shenstone Village (to serve the Train Station and Village) via Pinfold Hill, Station Road, Lynn Lane into the Station Car Park circle, then New Road, St John's Hill, Birmingham Road, Lichfield Road, Butlers Lane, Clarence Road, Balwell Land, Mere Green Island, Lichfiled Road, High Street to Sutton Coldfiled Town Centre.

• 394, 351 and 951A - Due to the nature of the route would need single decker buses. This would mean a steady 20 minute frequency to bet provided Monday - Saturday daytime and peek times, with short workings between Hednesford/Canock and New Oscott Tesco. The route to be run by National Express Perry Barr Garage would be the reason for these short workings. The route should be run hourly evenings departures from Sutton Coldfield at 1907 then hourly 2307, 0002 (Cannock Only) and from Hednsford at 1905 and then hourly until 2305, 0000 and the last departure from Cannock at 0039.

• 394, 351 and 951A reason I propose the Cannock and Hednesford extension for the route is that until 2008 National Express dropped the 396 & 952 services in The Norton Canes and Heath Hays, as well as Centro travel cards are not allowed pasted the county border. This I feel is a must in getting integrated publish transport and would advise that this is the case for the route. The final parts to this are the clubs in Cannock town centre, if this route ran as a limited stop service, would boost the night life in the area as a alternative to Walsall or Sutton Coldfiled. So I proposed that the route ran every from around 05:30 Monday-Friday (06:00 Saturday) until around 01:30 in the morning. Monday to Friday peek times, would see a 20-30 minutes frequency, with Monday - Saturday daytime every 30 minutes. Starting with using Optare Solo's vehicles. Why I propose this as the vehicle type is, route 995 is a new route that needs establishing. The reason I propose these vehicles are, I also prop ose that this route ran during Monday- Saturday evenings, starting with a hourly frequency then possible half-hourly. I finally propose that route 995 also runs between 09:00 and 18:00 on Sundays for shoppers in the areas in and around Hednesford, Cannock, Brownshill, (Walsall, Aldridge), New Oscott and Sutton Coldfield. I dont see a great need for a Sunday evening service, however, this could be looked into.

• 394a - Do they actually run to any timetable? I catch the 07.35 from Brownhills High Sreet every day and it gets to my stop [Friezland Lane] any time between 07.25 and 07.45 quite regularly!

• 56/ X56 I cannot add any more than they are very unreliable. In the recent snow all other buses were running more or less on time; the 56 was over 45 minutes late. The bus stop timetables are vague, especially early in the morning. Only this morning the bus due at Lazy Hill at 07:01 had left early, and was apparently seen only yards behind the 06:45 bus at Lazy Hill. The next bus was late. A passenger further along the route at Aldridge Road, Streetly had from her house seen 2 buses go past together at 07:10.

• Some times I have to travel to New Invention. Why are the buses to that destination nearly always overcrowded?

• Would be better if you had the LED timetables at Lysway & by County Hotel

• we have no bus on the forest est it is very difficult to walk when you have heavy shopping or are elderly or have health problems that make it difficult to walk very far

• 993 goes all over the place but no longer serves part of chester road where there are new shops and on chester road some of the people from neighbouring roads used to go through gulley and be able to catch bus. The part of the chester road that is no longer serves has a co-op and other shops.

• The Chester Road just past Thornhill Rd and Queslett Road East towards Banners Gate has no bus service.

• 377 changes to A and B and is confusing.

• Why don’t we grit our car parks at Stations.

• Four Oaks rail station has had a number of break-ins.

• Hazelwood Drive, Blackwood Drive and Lowlands Avenue not gritted yet is a bus route. Mark from Walsall agreed to speak to the relevant person at Walsall and go back to Mr Griffiths, 2 Bankside Crescent Streetly, B74 2HY 0121 353 4526.

• Extra 60p to get to work on X56 as the 993 is unreliable.

• Changing shift work patters due to 993 service.

• Doctor’s surgery and other shops not served (co-op/pharmacy)

• Suggest Diver 993 up Bridle Lane 100 Acres estate or left down to New Oscott then Birmingham.

• Drivers are always late and so miss stops because they are making up time. 993

• Want a service down Chester Road to Beggars Bush (tesco, lots of little shops and pub) as it is inaccessible.

• Wants an evening service to Sutton Coldfield as service stops at 530 and has to get a taxi.

• Also issues on no shelters no gritting and double parking preventing the bus getting through roads.

• 319 – reduced frequency from every 20 minutes to every 30 minutes. Would like frequency to be every 20 minutes again – vital for appointments.

• Surly driver on TWM 319 late 50/60s greyish/blackish hair – everyone complains about him – rude to old ladies.

• 23 bus often cancelled at lunchtimes and finish at 4. Didn’t operate at all one day because drivers were sick.

• Bus drivers leaving late – means late for work - 319 times xx42 bus leaves late because drivers smoking.

• Goscott Lane – used to be a 319 servive – put back on, 329 is already full when it gets there

• Bus stops needed nearer to canal Bridge on Lichfield Road for buses 302 and 346 – too far between stops.

• Online journey planner inaccurate and user – unfriendly. I have often resorted to planning my journey myself

• At the Aldridge meeting I was asked about three bus stops that are or were in existence. I’d appreciate any help you can give with the issues please.

• Bus stop 202542 is in Aldridge (Northgate) in a service road. It’s on the same road as the old Bingo place (which is on the opposite side of the street). Apparently it is too tight for buses to swing into and I am told that the bus stop isn’t served by buses but still has a flag on it. Are you able to check it out and do the necessary if it is a shelter that isn’t used please?

• At Anchor Road in Aldridge outside the Furnishing Store on the to Walsall side there is a car park behind the bus stop and cars keep driving over the pathway which is a danger to the bus users. The car park is privately owned. Is this something we would need to raise with the council?

• In Northgate just before the junction of Walton Road there used to be a stop that served the 56 and 32 service and apparently it was on a lamp post that went. Drivers will no longer stop there. I explained about the hand over of stops as I think it is likely it went either then or prior to then. One of the guys from Arriva Midlands knew where she was talking about and is going to check it out for me so I’ll give you more detail when he has contacted me.

• 373/372 used to be a circular 18 months ago cut in half – took 372 times instead of 373.

• No 0930 bus on Sunday so now cant get connecting bus to church..

• Can’t connect to Cannock or Wolverhampton. Poor connections with 301. Too many buses on 301 to Mossley.

• Field Road all round Lower Farm then two buses to see grandchildren – old 372/373 was no change. No direct buses to ASDA. 370 – similar problems

• Issues about getting to Mossley school.

• Brother on 346 – 2 bus companies therefore 4 buses per hour but two follow each other.

• Don’t like the term North Walsall.

• 320 used to go part school but taken off because of stone throwing – Blackenall want bus back to go to Tai Chi.

• 301 £2 return but no £2 return on 302.

• Chase Road, Brownhills to Jane Bridge Parkway and other person from Walsall Wood

• 63A Arriva timetable from Ring Road down Watling Street and Parade but doesn’t in practice – goes Ring Road, Watling Street, Chase Road, Lichfield Road then back to way Arriva and Traveline. Arriva map wrong - actually goes same way as 32.
