example of aggrandizing. Originally two smaller buildings, wallswere knocked through and the oors of the main room expandedto produce one very large building. Other rooms were added onunl there were eight rooms or spaces. This size of building, withso many rooms, is unusual, although the walls are of the normawidth, unlike Building 132 to the north. Another instance of ag-grandizing in this building is that a small plaorm edge into whichwild sheep horns had been set was later increased in size to a

large bench set with wild bull horns. In the later phase of occupaon, a large bulls head and horns were set into the wall and11 bull horns stacked above them. All this suggests a social unitintent on expanding in size and symbolism. But the funcons inBuilding 52 were the same as in other buildings.

Nearby Building 77 we found Building 119. This has avery typical plan, one very similar to other buildings around itincluding Buildings 1 and 3. We now realize that most if not albuildings at atalhyk had some form of painngs on their wallsat some me during their occupaon. Oen these painngs wereonly visible for a short period of me before being covered overagain in white plaster. Building 119 turned out to have painngsof an unusual sort in the northeast corner. We have found incised

and impressed decoraon on walls before, instead of the usuapainngs on at plaster. This was the rst me we had found ahybrid technique in which both painng and impression into theplaster were used. But as usual the two to four layers of painngwere only brief episodes in the longer-term life of the house. We also excavated in the South Area in 2014 and here alarge number of buildings were excavated leading to new discoveries of wall painngs. In parcular, we worked hard and pushedthrough Building 43 in order to uncover the footprint of the un-derlying building. In these earlier levels we began to see a pat-tern that had not been clear before that many of the buildings

Those who aended the excavaons at atalhyk in the sum-mer of 2014 might have been forgiven for thinking they had cometo the wrong site! The excavaon methods used at the site havelong been known to be slow and painstaking, the main tools be-ing dental picks and small brushes. Some of the eld sta did usesuch tools this year, but others found themselves amid maocks, shovels, wheelbarrows and clouds of dust, returning to the dighouse at the end of each day caked in sweat and grime. As the

overall atalhyk Research Project approaches its last years ofexcavaon, the pace has quickened and the push is on to reachdeeper levels and complete the digging of buildings. The enhanced speed and scale of excavaon certainlypaid o in terms of our understanding the nature of buildingsand building sequences at this 9,000 year old tell-site in centralTurkey. We had always thought, and previous excavaons havealways found, that later buildings were built directly on top ofearlier buildings. The focus on connuity of houses over manyrebuilds and generaons was very important at the site. But indigging beneath Building 77 we found something startlingly new.Instead of a precursor the same size and shape as Building 77, wefound a massive, double-sized building with unprecedented thick

walls. The current plan of the Neolithic buildings in the north partof the site makes it clear that the walls of Building 132 were un-usually thick. And the building was so large that it was replacedby two buildings the elaborate Building 77, and Building 108 tothe south. We look forward to nishing the excavaon of Building132 in 2015 to see whether its large size is an indicator of specialfuncons or status.

Immediately to the south of Building 132, we connuedexcavang Building 52 including its Space 90. We are graduallystarng to understand the very complex life-history of this build-ing or rather complex of buildings. The sequence shows a clear

This year eldwork in the TPC Area was concentrated in Trench 4.It is placed between Trenches 1 and 2, directly to the north, andTrench 3, directly to the south both excavated in the previousyears. Trench 4 is located on the southwest slope of the southernprominence of atalhyk East.

An overall goal of the excavaon of TPC Area is to link thestragraphy of the TP sequence, excavated in the year 2001-2008,

to the stragraphy of the South Area. It further aims to recognizearchitecture, burial pracce, poery and obsidian manufactureand use, subsistence, landscape use, etc. in the period betweenthe end of the South Area sequence (Building 10 in Level South T)and the beginning of the TP sequence (Building 81 in Level TP M).

A full season of excavaon took place in the newly designateGdansk (GDN) Area to the north of the TPC Area. The aim of thwork is to reexamine the structural and socio-spaal characteiscs of Late Neolithic buildings that were originally unearthehere in the 1960s by James Mellaart. In parcular, the goals ar(1) to reassess the plans of buildings that were assigned by Melaart to building levels I-III; (2) to reexamine the architectural an

structural character of the re-excavated buildings and collate thresults with those from other research areas, namely TP and TP(3) to reanalyze the stragraphic relaonships between the builings not only to challenge the selement layout argued by Melaart but also to produce more accurate data for the radiocarbodang programme.

As part of the Marie Curie Project CRAFTS conducted by ChrisnaTsoraki at Leiden University, a project focusing on the microwearanalysis of dierent ground stone categories commenced in 2014.Tsorakis project (Craing Networks in Early Farming Sociees:
