What is Management ?

In the modern economic scenario all over the world- “Management” – as a stream of education and training has acquired new dimensions.

Management is an exciting field where you can have an immediate impact on the operations of any business. The field of Management is a constantly changing hotbed of activities. New tools and techniques are continually being introduced to improve the efficiency, productivity, and profitability of any organization. All organizations and their departments, functions, or groups use Management methodologies, which include problem solving techniques and guidelines for various related activities.

The modern day Business Managers are required to have proficiency in:-

A business school is normally a university-level institution that teaches topics such as accounting, finance, marketing,

The managerial role is critical for economic performance and producing conditions. A good manager makes work satisfying and productive

and always tries for the betterment.

Management education can help students achieve success in their career life along with their self-interests, future hopes, wishes and goals in life. This is the significant feature of management studies as compared with other field of studies. To any responsible persona in any of the organization, management skills would surely help achieve things in a structured manner. Almost all the business groups and organizations appoint management people these days, to take care of their different managerial divisions and departments. These business groups or organizations may include:

Manufacturing Commerce Healthcare Education Legal Nonprofit Recreational Any specialized science organization and so on.

Management education paves the way for earning a good employment to serve the human community with the best of the managerial practices and also shows the way for a better self-employment or starting up a small business or a big level national business etc.

Applying the principles from the day to day functioning till managing the profit of a firm, students with management skills do the things differently and effectively and hence they are in great demand.

To face the challenges of human resource and operation, management skills provide theoretical groundings and frameworks by a proper understanding and developing solutions. Higher Management degrees can make a person as a specialist in

Selection

The admission for these Diploma programs is based on Aptitude Tests conducted by the Individual Institutes, Universities, generally. This a two-year course for regular students doing evening classes.

Eligibility

A degree or a diploma in any discipline of engineering is the basic qualification required to pursue Postgraduate Diploma programs in Management. For the specific PG Diploma Programs in Management, Graduate degree or Diploma in that specific subject is required.

Duration

The Duration of the PG Diploma in Management is generally two years on fulltime basis. But if it is offered through Distance-education/Correspondence-education/Part-time basis, the duration will be two to three years which depends on the course-plan of the Universities or Institutes. The first step for an aspirant is the Entrance Test either carried out at the National Level or the Institutes’ level. These entrance tests are designed with a view to objectively measure the aptitude of the candidate, and the general skills as expected of a would be manager / organiser. The entrance tests are of multiple-choice type, where each question is provided with multiple options / answers (generally four choices) and the candidate has to choose the right one.

Generally, the management programs are open to all the streams of study. The complexity level of the masters level management entrance test is mainly pegged at 10+2 level. However, the entrance test for bachelors level management program mainly emphasized on high school standards. The Entrance Tests broadly consist of the following sections:

Verbal Ability Test:- The entrance test in Verbal Ability consists of questions based on Antonyms, Synonyms, English Usage, Sentence Sequencing, Sentence Completion, Logical Arrangements and Arguments, etc.

Reading Comprehension Section:- The entrance test in reading comprehension section consists of questions based on Passages.

Quantitative Ability Test:- The entrance test in Quantitative Ability Test section consists of the following content.

Number Systems, Percentages, HCF and LCM, Ratios and Proportions, Profit & Loss, Interests, Time-Work, Time-Distance, Clocks, Calendars, Set Theory, Quadratics, Remainder Theorem, Functions, Permutations, Probability, Trigonometry etc.

Data Interpretation Skills:- The entrance test in Data Interpretation Section consists of the following topics.

Charts and Tables, Graphs and Functions based problems.

Logical Ability Test:- The entrance test in Logical Ability Test section cosists of the following content. Analogies, Logical Clustering, Mathematical Logic, Critical Reasoning, Puzzles, etc.

General Awareness Tests:- The entrance test in General Awareness Tests section tests the candidate's general knowledge.

Patterns

The pattern of the entrance test may vary institute to institute. Some may have or may not have all of the above sections. The number of questions per section and the marks assigned for a correct answer in each section may also vary. The pattern of the entrance tests generally changes every year.

Dynamics

The duration of the entrance test is generally 2 to 3 hours while the total number of questions are in the range of 150 - 250 in number. The tests are conceptualized in such a manner that only a well prepared and learned candidate will only be able to answer all the questions correctly in the given time frame. The accuracy and speed of answering the questions are extremely important in the entrance tests as these results in the final assessment of the ability to handle the pressures.

The focus should be to maximize the overall performance, with reasonably good performance in each section. Since each section is targeted towards measuring specific skills, no section should be left un-attempted. Further, one has to score a minimum of marks in each section to be eligible for being considered for over all ranking. While intelligent guessing is encouraged, arbitrary guessing is penalised by way of negative marks (1/4 th to 1/3 rd mark against every incorrect answer).

Group Discussion and Personal Interview

Some business schools / institutes adopt Group Discussions in the selection process while some do not. Students qualifying in the entrance test are invited for a Group Discussion. This is further followed by a Personal Interview. The Group discussions are the first occasion on which the candidates meet and interact with the faculty and other members.

On an average 6 to 12 candidates are invited for this phase of the selection process for every seat offered. In a Group Discussion the candidates discuss the topic given to them with the faculty for a duration of 15 - 25minutes.

On basis of the Group Discussion, the candidate's ability is assessed in terms of :-

• Behavior. • Communication skills. • Contribution of ideas facilitating a discussion. • The range and depth of his / her knowledge on topics of general interest • Initiative and leadership qualities.

The Personal Interview process normally takes place after the group discussions. In this interview, besides the validation of the information provided by the candidate in the application form, a candidate's suitability for the management programme is assessed on basis of various personal attributes.

Past Academic Performance

Due weightage is given to a candidate's past academic performance also during the selection process.

Work Experience

Appropriate weightage is also given to candidates having at least 6 months of full-time work experience.

Selection Process

Admissions to most of the Business Management Programs are carried out on the basis of interest and aptitude. Selections are done through a multi-mode procedure.

Admissions are made on the basis of:-

• Academic performance • Performance in Entrance Test (where ever applicable) • Performance in Group Discussions • Performance in Personal Interview and • Work Experience ( for Managers )

Group Discussion

After getting success in CAT for admission in IIMS & REPUTED B-SCHOOL , the very

important assignment is to appear in GD & Personal Interview.

Start making preparations for group discussions and personal interview right away, without

waiting till the eleventh hour. It is important to concentrate on subject knowledge and general

awareness. Hence, the prime need for thorough preparation. Remember, the competition is very

tough. Only few hundred candidates make it to the final list from lacs of aspirants each year.

Group discussions are used as a selection tool because they provide lots of information about

candidate’s personality. GDs are used to assess group skills such as leadership skills, social

skills, listening and articulation skills, situation handling ability and interpersonal ability.

GDs can be divided into three phase:

1. REGULAR STRUCTURED GDs:In this

phase time limits and topic are defined. No Consensus is expected at end. No leader is to be selected for facilitating process. Topics are general.

2. UNSTRUCTURED GDs:Choosing leader is mandatory. Group has to reach a consensus at the end. The leader has to direct the group.

3. SPECIALISED GDs:These include role-play GDs.

There are many important factors which also plays role eg: CONTENT Vs PROCESS Content refers level of preparation, the ability to organize thoughts in a logical way, to have concept of topic and ability to innovate.Process includes expression, communication skill, body language and the attitude.

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS IN GDs

1. INNOVATIVENESS: Ability to have an entirely different perspective.

2. QUALITY OF CONTENT: The level of preparedness.

3. LOGICAL ABILITY: Ability to reason, think and debate pros cons.

4. BEHAVIOURAL SKILLS: Aggressiveness is negative while assertiveness is positive.

5. COMMUNICATION: It includes articulation, listening and body language .Functional knowledge of language is most important thing.

6. LEADERSHIP: It involves all above skills. It is the mobility that lets you demonstrate leadership skill as the content demands.

Personal Interview

Personal Interview is next most important step after the Group Discussions for getting into

MBA. Here are few ways to face personal interview.

1. Speak clearly and enthusiastically about your experiences and skills. Be professional, but don't be afraid to let your personality shine through. Be yourself. Don't be afraid of short pauses.

2. Be positive. Employers do not want to hear a litany of excuses or bad feelings about a negative experience. If you are asked about a low grade, weakness in your background, don't be defensive. Focus instead on the facts.

3. Be prepared to market your skills and experiences as they relate to the described.

4. Research information about

the institutes before the interview. Make sure you know the institute in detail at least for three years such as minimum and maximum rank , performance, faculty and placements made by them.

5. Arrive early for the interview. Plan to arrive for your interview 10-15 minutes before the appointed time. Arriving too early confuses the employer and creates an awkward situation. By the same token, arriving late creates a bad first impression.

6. Carry a portfolio, notepad or at the very least, a manila file folder.

7. Bring extra resumes and a list of questions you need answered. You may refer to your list of questions to be sure you've gathered the information you need to make a decision. Do not be preoccupied with taking notes during the interview.

8. In many career fields, the lunch or dinner included during the interview day encompasses not only employer hospitality, but also a significant part of the interview process. Brush up on your etiquette and carry your share of the conversation during the meal. Often social skills are part of the hiring decision.

9. After the interview, take time to write down the names and titles (check spelling) of all your interviewers, your impressions, remaining questions and information learned. If you are interviewing regularly, this process will help you keep employers and circumstances clearly defined.

10.Follow up the interview with a thank-you letter.

It is an exciting industry that attracts many brilliant, ambitious, creative, talented, committed and hard working people. Success in the fashion industry calls for an ultimate passion and enthusiasm to achieve set targets. The desires to create, see, explore and appreciate beauty must be inherent. It's a creative field and one needs to possess as well as acquire certain skills that are indispensable, such as thinking creatively beyond the obvious and the ability to carve a niche in almost all the possible projects by making it different yet stunning than the previous one.

Careers in the fashion industry revolve around beauty. In order to be successful in this field you should have the unquenchable thirst for beauty in its all‐relevant forms. Changing fashion statements determine the change in the trend of clothing, ornamenting and above all, adopting new ways of carrying oneself. It is the style that brings elegance with a difference in different designs. Style is an individual aspect. No two people can have exactly the same style statement because every person has a unique style of their own. Therefore, the concepts related to fashion are also different. Some people feel that fashion is the passion of the slaves and that is why they try to dress and carry themselves in a manner similar to that of models walking on the ramp. This thought is challenged by a different thought; those who go against the fashion trends are themselves the slaves of the fashion.

No matter what different concepts abound, fashion is a career industry that is never going to fade. There are immense opportunities in this field, as you can opt for any of the following job prospects pertaining to your areas of interest: modeling, catwalk choreography, fashion photography, designing, merchandising, make‐up artists, hair styling, and accessory designing.

Modeling: Modeling is a promising career that requires having a certain confidence and a pleasing appearance that needs to confirm to the basic standards of fashion designers. One needs to have an inclination towards glitz and glamour, as it is part and parcel of this industry.

Catwalk Choreography: Catwalk Choreography aims at training models to present their attire in an appealing and professional way. Designers hire talented choreographers because they know that every movement with the background music counts on the ramp. It can make or break an entire fashion show. Fashion Photography: Fashion Photography is a very demanding career that requires the utmost dedication, sincerity, sensitivity and at the same time objectivity towards the subjects. It is the job of the fashion photographer to present clear expression to almost all the possible facets of style such as fabric, design, designer, model and the like.

Nature of the Work

Fashion designers help create the billions of clothing articles, shoes, and accessories purchased every year by consumers. Designers study fashion trends, sketch designs of clothing and accessories, select colors and fabrics, and oversee the final production of their designs. Clothing designers create and help produce men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel, including casual wear, suits, sportswear, formalwear, outerwear, maternity, and intimate apparel. Footwear designers help create and produce different styles of shoes and boots. Accessory designers help create and produce items that add the finishing touches to an outfit, such as handbags, belts, scarves, hats, hosiery, and eyewear. (The work of jewelers and precious stone and metal workers is described elsewhere in the Handbook.) Some fashion designers specialize in clothing, footwear, or accessory design, while others create designs in all three fashion categories. The design process from initial design inception to final production takes between 18 and 24 months. The first step in creating a design is researching fashion trends and making predictions of future trends. Some designers conduct their own research, while others rely on trend reports published by fashion industry trade groups. Trend reports indicate what styles, colors, and fabrics will be popular for a particular season in the future. Textile manufacturers use these trend reports to begin designing fabrics and patterns while fashion designers begin to sketch preliminary designs. Designers will then visit manufacturers or trade shows to procure samples of fabrics and decide which fabrics to use with which designs.

Once designs and fabrics are chosen, a prototype of the article using cheaper materials is created and then worn by a model to see what adjustments to the design need to be made. During this time, designers usually will narrow down their choices of which designs to offer for sale. After the final adjustments and selections have been made, samples of the article using the actual materials are sewn, and then marketed to clothing retailers. Many designs are shown at fashion and trade shows a few times a year. Retailers will then place orders for certain items, which are then manufactured and distributed to stores. Computer‐aided design (CAD) is increasingly being used in the fashion design industry. While most designers initially sketch designs by hand, a growing number also translate these hand sketches to the computer. CAD allows designers to view designs of clothing on virtual models and in various colors and shapes, thus saving time by requiring fewer adjustments of prototypes and samples later. Depending on the size of the design firm and level of experience, fashion designers may have varying levels of involvement in different aspects of design and production. In large design firms, fashion designers often are the lead designers who are responsible for creating the designs, choosing the colors and fabrics, and overseeing technical designers who turn the designs into a final product. They are responsible for creating the prototypes and patterns and work with the manufacturers and suppliers during the production stages. Large design houses also employ their own patternmakers, tailors, and sewers who create the master patterns for the design and sew the prototypes and samples. Designers working in small firms, or those new to the job, usually perform most of the technical, patternmaking, and sewing tasks in addition to designing the clothing. (The work of pattern makers, hand sewers, and tailors is covered in the statement on textile, apparel, and furnishings occupations elsewhere in the Handbook). Fashion designers working for apparel wholesalers or manufacturers create designs for the mass market. These designs are manufactured in various sizes and colors. A small number of high‐fashion (haute couture) designers are self‐employed and create custom designs for individual clients, usually at very high prices. Other high‐fashion designers sell their designs in their own retail stores or cater to specialty stores or high‐fashion department stores. These designers create a mixture of original garments and those that follow established fashion trends.

Some fashion designers specialize in costume design for performing arts, motion picture, and television productions. The work of costume designers is similar to other fashion designers. Costume designers perform extensive research into the styles worn during the period in which the performance takes place, or work with directors to select appropriate attire for performances. They make sketches of designs, select fabric and other materials, and oversee the production of the costumes. They also must stay within the costume budget for the particular production.

Working Conditions

Fashion designers employed by manufacturing establishments, wholesalers, or design firms generally work regular hours in well‐lighted and comfortable settings. Designers who freelance generally work on a contract, or job, basis. They frequently adjust their workday to suit their clients’ schedules and deadlines, meeting with the clients during evening or weekend hours when necessary. Freelance designers tend to work longer hours and in smaller, more congested, environments, and are under pressure to please clients and to find new ones in order to maintain a steady income. Regardless of their work setting, all fashion designers occasionally work long hours to meet production deadlines or prepare for fashion shows. The global nature of the fashion business requires constant communication with suppliers,

manufacturers, and customers all over the United States and the world. Most fashion designers travel several times a year to trade and fashion shows in order to learn about the latest fashion trends. Designers also may travel frequently to meet with fabric and materials suppliers and with manufacturers who produce the final apparel products.

Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement

In fashion design, employers seek individuals with a 2‐year or 4‐year degree who are knowledgeable about textiles, fabrics, ornamentation, and fashion trends. Designers must have a strong sense of the esthetic—an eye for color and detail, a sense of balance and proportion, and an appreciation for beauty. Fashion designers also need excellent communication and problem‐solving skills. Despite the advancement of computer‐aided design, sketching ability remains an important advantage in fashion design. A good portfolio—a collection of examples of a person’s best work—often is the deciding factor in getting a job.

Bachelor’s of fine arts and associate degree programs in fashion design are offered at many colleges, universities, and private art and design schools. Some fashion designers also combine a fashion design degree with a business, marketing, or fashion merchandising degree, especially those who want to run their own business or retail store. Basic coursework includes color, textiles, sewing and tailoring, pattern making, fashion history, CAD, and design of different types of clothing such as menswear or footwear. Coursework in human anatomy, mathematics, and psychology also is useful.

The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits approximately 250 postsecondary institutions with programs in art and design. Most of these schools award degrees in fashion design. Many schools do not allow formal entry into a program until a student has successfully completed basic art and design courses. Applicants usually have to submit sketches and other examples of their artistic ability. In addition to creativity and sketching ability, fashion designers also need to have sewing and patternmaking skills, even if they do not perform these tasks themselves. Designers need to be able to understand these skills so they can give proper instructions as to how the garment should be constructed. Fashion designers also need strong sales and presentation skills in order to persuade clients to purchase their designs. Good teamwork and communication skills also are necessary because of the increasingly international nature of the business that requires constant contact with suppliers, manufacturers, and buyers around the world.

Aspiring fashion designers can learn these necessary skills through internships with design or manufacturing firms. Some designers also gain valuable experience working in retail stores, as personal stylists, or as custom tailors. Such experience can help designers gain sales and marketing skills while learning what styles and fabrics look good on different people. Designers also can gain exposure to potential employers by entering their designs in student or amateur contests. Because of the global nature of the fashion industry, experience in one of the international fashion centers, such as Milan or Paris, can be useful.

Beginning fashion designers usually start out as pattern makers or sketching assistants for more experienced designers before they can advance to higher level positions. Experienced designers may advance to chief designer, design department head, or other supervisory position. Some designers may start their own design company, or sell their designs in their own retail stores. A few of the most successful designers can work for high‐fashion design houses that offer personalized design services to wealthy clients.

Employment Fashion designers held about 17,000 jobs in 2004. More than 1 out of 4 were self‐employed. About 25 percent of fashion designers worked for apparel and piece goods merchant wholesalers. Another 15 percent worked in cut and sew apparel manufacturing. The remainder worked for corporate offices involved in the management of companies and enterprises, clothing stores, performing arts companies, specialized design services firms, textile and textile product mills, and footwear and accessories manufacturers. Employment of fashion designers tends to be concentrated in regional fashion centers. In 2004, two‐thirds of salaried fashion designers were employed in either New York or California.

Job Outlook

Job competition is expected be keen as many designers are attracted to the creativity and glamour associated with the occupation, while relatively few job openings arise because of low job turnover and a small number of new openings created every year. Employment of fashion designers is projected to grow more slowly than average for all occupations through 2014. Employment declines in cut and sew apparel manufacturing are projected to offset increases in apparel wholesalers.

Employment growth for fashion designers will stem from a growing population demanding more clothing, footwear, and accessories. Demand is increasing for stylish clothing that is affordable, especially among middle income consumers. The best job opportunities will be in design firms that design mass market clothing sold in department stores and retail chain stores, such as apparel wholesale firms. Few employment opportunities are expected in design firms that cater to high‐end department stores and specialty boutiques as demand for expensive, high‐fashion design declines relative to other luxury goods and services.

Job opportunities in cut and sew manufacturing will continue to decline as apparel is increasingly manufactured overseas. However, employment of fashion designers in this industry will not decline as fast as other occupations because firms are more likely to keep design work in‐house.

Earnings Median annual earnings for fashion designers were $55,840 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $38,800 and $77,580. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $27,970, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $112,840.

Earnings in fashion design can vary widely based on the employer and years of experience. Starting salaries in fashion design tend to be very low until designers are established in the industry. Salaried fashion designers usually earn higher and more stable incomes than self‐employed or freelance designers. However, a few of the most successful self‐employed fashion designers may earn many times the salary of the highest paid salaried designers. Self‐employed fashion designers must provide their own benefits and retirement.

The designs could be as serious as the times or as sexy as they want to be. The principles of fashion design do evolve with the changing tastes of society. Design software creates a graphic, which patternmakers and tailors can follow in order to develop a sample. This is when a designer can see their ideas and creations in the flesh.
