Wolfgang Aulitzky, MD is the Medical Director of the American Austrian Foundation. He is Associate Dean for International Medicine and Distance Learning, Adjunct Prof. of Clincal Urology and Adjunct Prof. of Clinical Reproductive Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University/New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is also Associate Prof. of Urology at the University of Innsbruck and was Visiting Scientist at the Population Council at Rockefeller University, New York. He is a member of the American, German and Austrian Societies of Urology and was awarded the Zuckerkandelpreis of the Austrian Society of Urology in 1989. In 1995 he received the Silver Medal and 2007 the Golden Medal for Merits to the Republic of Austria. As Director of the Medical Program of the American Austrian Foundation he has initiated the Salzburg Cornell-, Philadelphia-, Columbia- and Cleveland Duke Seminars. Dr. Aulitzky earned his medical degree at the University of Innsbruck in 1977, was a research fellow at the University of Uppsala, Sweden in 1978-79 and at the New York Hospital - Cornell University Medical College in 1988-1989. He received his training as an urologist at the University of Innsbruck and the General Hospital of Salzburg. As a clinician he works as Medical Director and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Confraternitaet-Privatklinik Josefstadt in Vienna. He is the author of more than 140 publications on Urology, Andrology and Health Care issues and is co-author of books on basic and clinical urology/andrology. Tomislav Mihaljevic, MD (Course Director) - Dr. Mihaljevic’s specialties are minimally invasive cardiac surgery, robotic cardiac surgery, image-guided cardiac surgery, heart failure, mitral and aortic valve repair and replacement, coronary artery disease, beating heart revascularization, Maze procedure, heart and lung transplantation, ventricular assist devices, and adult congenital heart disease. He earned his medical degree at the University of Zagreb, School of Medicine, Zagreb, Croatia, and acquired special training at the University Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. Walter Klepetko, MD (Co-Course Director) is Professor of Special Thoracic Surgery and Director of the Lung Transplantation Program at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. Professor Klepetko received his board certifications from the Austrian Board of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, the Austrian Board of Vascular Surgery and the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (FEBTCS). He is a full member of several national (Austrian Surgical Society, Austrian Transplant Society, Austrian Pulmonological Society, Austrian Society of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery) and international societies, including the American College of Chest Physicians (FACCP), the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons (AATS), the American Society of Thoracic Surgery, the Germany Society of Thoracic Surgery, the European Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and an active consulting honorary member of young thoracic societies coming from new community countries like Hungary, Romania and Czech Republic. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Cardio-Vascular Surgery and serves as an editor and reviewer in several international journals. Professor Klepetko is the past president of the European Association of Cardio-thoracic Surgery and Director of the European Postgraduate School for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery in Bergamo. He is Chairman of the Thoracic Surgical Group of the Austrian Pulmological Society and an active part of the Medical University Educational System as vice chairman of the committee on education in thoracic surgery. Professor Klepetko’s main fields of interests are lung transplantation, lung volume reduction surgery, pulmonary endarterectomy and the field of extended thoracic oncological surgery. Rainald Seitelberger, MD (Co-Course Director) – Dr. Seitelberger’s specialties are adult cardiac disease including coronary bypass grafting, valve reconstruction/replacement, valve endocarditis, thoracic aneurysm, surgery for atrial fibrillation, and adult congenital heart disease. He received his medical degree from the University of Vienna, Austria, and did his special training at the University of California, San Diego, USA, and at Albert Ludwigs-University Freiburg, Germany, University Vienna, Austria. In his leisure time, Dr. Seitelberger enjoys tennis, skiing and attending the theater and opera. David P. Mason, MD is a staff surgeon in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He holds joint appointments as a staff surgeon in the Clinic’s Transplantation Center in the Division of Surgery and in the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center. He specializes in general thoracic surgery, minimally invasive thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, malignant mesothelioma and lung transplantation. Dr. Mason is board certified in general and thoracic surgery. Following an undergraduate degree from Harvard University, Dr. Mason received his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York. He did his internship and residency in general surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He continued his clinical training by accepting a position as Senior Research Fellow in Vascular Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle, followed by a fellowship in Thoracic Surgery from Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Mason has held academic appointments at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore as Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston as a Research Assistant in Vascular Surgery. Dr. Mason was appointed in 2004 as a staff surgeon in the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, Transplantation Center and Cancer Center. He has authored or co-authored several chapters in medical textbooks on his specialty interests including videothoracoscopic surgery, Barrett’s Esophagus, video-assisted thoracic surgery and gastroesophageal reflux. He has published articles in such leading publications as the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Circulation and Journal of Vascular Surgery. Nicholas G. Smedira, MD is the Surgical Director of the Cleveland Clinic Kaufman Center for Heart Failure, Director of the Cardiac Transplantation and Ventricular Assist Device Therapy Program, and a cardiac surgeon in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He specializes in heart and heart-lung transplantation, ventricular assist devices, ECMO, heart failure surgery, aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement, off-pump coronary bypass grafting, myectomy, reoperations, and ascending aortic replacement. Dr. Smedira is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. In 2006 he was also appointed Professor in the Department of Surgery, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Smedira earned his undergraduate (Phi Beta Kappa; Magna Cum Laude) and medical (Alpha Omega Alpha; M.D. with Honors) degrees from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, New York. After completing his residency in general surgery at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center where he became Chief Surgical Resident, Dr. Smedira received fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery, critical care medicine and research from the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. He won a post-doctoral National Research Service Award fellowship. He then received a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, where he was appointed in 1995 as a staff cardiac surgeon. Dr. Smedira was voted the 2004 Teacher of the Year in the Cleveland Clinic’s Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department. He also has been a visiting professor at the Ministry of Health in Singapore, at the Atlantic Health System in New Jersey, Ottawa Heart Institute in Canada and the University of California at San Francisco. As principal or co-investigator in more than 100 clinical trials and studies, Dr. Smedira has focused his research efforts on his specialty interests. Currently, he is the principal investigator of multiple clinical trials including the surgical treatment of ischemic heart failure, gene transfer to promote angiogenesis in patients with advanced heart failure, bivalirudin as an alternative to heparin during cardiac surgery, rotary blood pumps such as the Debakey and Heartmate II used to support patients until transplant, and two permanent left ventricular assist device trials Dr. Smedira has been invited to present his clinical experience and research findings at hundreds of conferences and symposia worldwide. He is the author or co-author of numerous book chapters on subjects related to his specialty interests, including advances in cardiac intensive care, cardiac surgery, assist devices, and treatment of heart failure. He has authored or co-authored hundreds of published studies and abstracts related to his research in leading peer-reviewed publications, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and Journal of the American College of Cardiology, among others.

Dr. Smedira is a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology, Fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians, Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and Fellow in the American Heart Association He is a member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs, the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and the Scientific Advisory Board for the International Society of Heart Failure and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Rudolf Speich, MD, FCCP is Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Zurich, where he is also Deputy Director of Internal Medicine. Professor Speich graduated from the University of Zurich in 1980. He completed his specialization in internal, respiratory and critical care medicine. Together with Professor Walter Weder, Professor Speich founded the Zurich Lung Transplant Program. Later he built up the Zurich Pulmonary Hypertension Program. Professor Speich has conducted extensive research in lung transplantation, complications in immunosuppressed patients, interstitial lung diseases, diagnosis of pulmonary infections, bronchoalveolar lavage and clinical aspects of pulmonary hypertension. He was a member of the 2nd and 3rd WHO World Symposium on Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). For the first time he described the impact of HIV infection on PAH, and thereafter was engaged in several studies on this issue. At the moment, his focus concentrates in aspects regarding quality of life in patients with pulmonary hypertension. Professor Speich is member of various professional societies and reviewer for many journals in the field of internal, pulmonary and transplant medicine. Andreas Zuckermann, MD graduated from the University of Vienna, Austria, before working as a Transplant Coordinator in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Vienna. In this role, Dr Zuckermann organized and coordinated 173 thoracic transplantations. Dr Zuckermann then trained in cardio-thoracic surgery at the University of Vienna and in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at St Pölten Hospital, Vienna. Currently, Dr Zuckermann’s roles include Director of the Cardiac Transplant Program and Coordinator of the Heart-Lung Transplant Program at the Medical University of Vienna. Dr Zuckermann is also a member of the Eurotransplant Thoracic Audit Group and is a member of several societies, including the American Society for Transplantation and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. He has received numerous awards for his outstanding contribution to the area of transplantation and has 88 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is reviewer for several surgical and transplant journals and member of the editorial board for Transplantation. In 2007 he performed Austria’s first ‘beating heart transplant’. His main fields of research are clinical use of immunosuppressive drugs, risk factor analysis in cardiac transplantation and new preservation technologies in cardiac transplantation.
