• Upper Tier Municipalities– Region (8)– County (22)– District (10)

• Regions have more servicing responsibilities than the counties– roads and transit– policing– sewer, water, and waste – regional planning – health and social services

Municipal Voting Process

• Mayor, councillors, and school board trustees are all elected in municipal elections.

• Municipal elections in Ontario are held every four years on the second Monday in November.

• The term of office is from December 1st of an election year until November 30th of the following election year.

• 446 municipalities in Ontario (down from 815)

• 2798 councillor positions (down from 4586)

• 5103 candidates– 476 incumbent candidates were acclaimed– 98 new candidates were acclaimed– 28 municipalities reported entire council acclaimed

• Voter Turnout: 40%
