Rogue One was released at the tail-end of 2016, but it will go on to add north of $300 million in ticket sales to Disney’s 2017 box-office total.

Disney’s first Thor movie grossed roughly $430 million, while its sequel expanded to $630 million. With a bigger cast of Marvel heroes featuring in the third installment, ticket sales could see another large increase.

The original Guardians of the Galaxy earned positive reviews from 91% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed roughly $770 million worldwide. The sequel bows on May 17, and looks primed to be a huge hit.

Live-action remakes of Disney classics are box-office gold. The company’s Jungle Book did nearly $1 billion at theaters, and its upcoming Beauty and the Beast has the potential to put up similar sales.

Disney can typically count on Pixar to deliver strong performers at the box office, and Coco stands a good chance of adding to the studio’s long-running track record of success.

The four entries in the Pirates series have combined for more than $3.7 billion in global ticket sales. Dead Men Tell No Tales could become the franchise’s third entry to pass the $1 billion mark.

Born in China will almost certainly wind up with the lowest gross out of the films on this list, but the panda picture might just deliver the extra push that Disney needs to surpass last year’s ticket totals.

Look for Cars 3 to match Cars 2’s global ticket sales of roughly $560 million, but the real prize for Disney will be the merchandise sales generated by the film. The Cars series has generated well above $10 billion in retail sales.

Despite releasing on Dec. 15, Episode VIII will likely do over $1 billion in ticket sales in 2017, and could wind up grossing over $2 billion before its theatrical run is over.

Disney currently has nine films dated for 2017 – six less than it released in 2016. Some sources suggest that more pictures from the company will land this year, with an additional live-action remake of one of its classic fairy tales being another potential sales driver.

How likely is it that Disney will set new records in 2017?

If additional films don’t arrive, then the films profiled in this presentation have long odds of combining to break last year’s domestic and global ticket sales records. The company’s major 2017 releases look to have comparable draws to last year’s big winners, but releasing six fewer films sets up an unfavorable comparison.
