News from National: A new EGA logo and a new website COMING SOON! Look for it in first quarter 2018! We had a sneak peek at our January meeting, the logo is sleek and easy to read. I will share more info as soon as it’s available. Garage sale postponed. We decided to have the EGA garage sale a Biennial event, alternating years with the luncheon. So 2019 will be our next sale. We do have volunteers to “house” your donations, so you can still bring items to our meetings. All in all it’s shaping up to be a delightfully busy spring! As always, we need to enjoy some time with our needle. Happy Stitching, Helen

PRESIDENT’S LETTER – Helen Salkowski

Greetings fellow Stitchers, Wishing all of you a very Happy New Year 2018 is off to a running start with several activities already on the EGA events calendar. EGA National Stitch in Public Day is Saturday, February 3rd. Betsy Smullen has reserved us space at the Murphy-Wilmot Public Library from 11 AM until 3 PM, in a centrally located seating area that includes some small tables. Some of us stitched here last year, it was pleasant, and we attracted some interested parties. So come join us! Vice Presidents – Betsy Smullen / Lydia Reichard Simple Framing recap: Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in the framing supplies. Below is a list of supplies that were presented at the program.

1. Acid-free foam core (found at frame shops, art supply shops, and craft stores that offer framing) 2. Stainless steel pins for pinning (Bridal & Lace pins by Dritz, found online) 3. Back of spoon or bottom of screwdriver to push the pins into the foam core 4. Buttonhole twist thread for lacing 5. Quilt batting for padding 6. Framer’s tape (found at frame shops and art supply shops) 7. Double-sticky tape for mounting paper to the back of the frame 8. Decorative paper for the back

February: Introduction to Color Theory. This is a study box from EGA National and we should have fun playing with color and learning how to select our own colors that work well together. March: Doodle stitching! Embroidery can be whimsical, fun, and easy. For doodle stitching we trace a design onto light colored fabric or transfer with tissue paper and thread onto a darker or heavier fabric, hoop it up and then stitch using simple stitches such as stem, outline, backstitch, French knots or chain stitch. Bring a photo or drawing of something you would like to stitch, tracing paper, pencil and eraser. We’ll simplify the tracing, transfer designs and begin stitching. The first photo is of a great-tailed grackle and the second photo is the final simplified embroidery that captures the essence of the bird. April: Embroidered Garments: this is a show and share and can be a fashion show as well. Bring embroidered garments that you have worked and tell us about them!

HOSPITALITY Claudia Hester

February hospitality volunteers are Marilyn Schubert and Helen Salkowski. We need one more volunteer for March. We also need volunteers for April and June, 2018.

WORKSHOPS Barbara Lewis / Karen Swanson

We will be announcing a fall workshop at the February meeting.

BEADING Jane Matter The group project for the February bead meeting was selected with the upcoming Gem Show in mind. The necklace pictured below, Patterns of the Serengeti, is from the June/July 2009 Beadwork magazine. The digital issue of the magazine is available online for $6 as a download (https://www.interweave.com/store/beadwork-june-july-2009-digital-edition). The necklace is centered around 7 18mm lampworked lentil beads (other beads would certainly work too). Four different stitched beads are constructed in colors that compliment the focal beads, along with other pressed glass beads and a crystal bicone - much like the Group Correspondence Course we did in 2016. In addition to the large focal beads, the pattern calls for:

10g each of size 11 seed beads in 4 colors

5g of size 8 seed beads

8 size 6 seed beads

1 4mm crystal bicone

10 9x13mm 3-sided pressed-glass ovals

+ other notions for sewing and stringing.

The Tucson Gem and Bead Show is January 27 to February 3, 2018. Happy shopping!

EDUCATION Laura Cotter

We are making good progress on the Temari balls GCC. We have been meeting after our business meetings to discuss progress and answer any questions.

We presented our 2017 Show and Share awards at the January meeting. The award for most bead items went to Marian Hill and Betsy Smullen received the award for most needlework items. Marge Krassy won the award from the drawing from cards from all participants in the Show and Share for the year.

Our Speaker

Daniel Ravan is the CEO at Rainbow Gallery. After a few years of getting to know the industry, he seized the opportunity to acquire the well-respected yarn manufacturer Rainbow Gallery. Six months after the acquisition, Daniel was effectively running the company’s day-to-day operations.

For over 30 years Rainbow Gallery has been on the cutting edge of bringing new and innovative threads to the stitching community. From Silk, Cotton, Bamboo, Linen and Metallics, there are myriad types of yarn that Rainbow Gallery introduces to the market throughout the year.
