Three religions have coexisted over the years: Christianity,
Judaism and Muslim.
City Walls, medieval castles, palaces and churches fill the narrow streets of
the Old Town of Cáceres.
The top of some towers of the palaces were cut off because its owners did not
advocate the cause of the Queen Isabel in her fight of the Crown of Castile.
THE ALGIBE is an impressive
cistern used to store water,
from the Muslim epoch.

The princess in love leyendIt was the 13th century andCáceres was under Arab rule, dominated by a haughty andarrogant Kaid. Christiansbesieged the city, unable tobreak in. But it happened thata Captain of the army of KingAlfonso IX fell in love with theonly daughter of the Kaid, themost beautiful princess hehad ever seen. She revealed tohim to a secret passage to getthrough the walls and enterthe fortress: the passage ofMansaborá.
Many nights the captain crossed this passage to see hisprincess, but his honor was stronger than his love forher. So finally one night he betrayed her and led theChristian army through the secret passage, makingpossible the reconquest of the city.
When the Kaid discovered how his enemies hadentered, he punished his daughter transforming herinto a hen and condemned her to wander the streetsof the old town of Cáceres until the city shall be backunder Arab rule.
It is said that you can only see the “princess in love”in the magical night of San Juan on 24th June.
