A New Year– A New Swarm

Looking back at 2014 we saw Swarm mature from its humble beginnings as a

new idea plucked from the mind of our innovative founder Robert Ashton, to

what is now a rapidly growing business with big growth plans for 2015.

As the number of innovative young people becoming Swarm apprentices

grew, so did Swarm.

In 2014 we saw Shannon join the business as our energizing Swarm

apprentice, Jessica became Operations Manager and of course, yours truly

who stepped in to take the reins of Swarm and turn it into the growing

community it has now become.

2014 was the year of planting the seeds and now 2015 is a year of growth into

new regions, growing the Swarm community and supporting more and more

young people to deliver a real impact in business.

As our Swarm grows through Norfolk, I challenged the team to come up with

a new way to share the huge successes that our apprentices have made in

their businesses, share best practice and also have a bit of fun.

So here is the result, BUZZ magazine, a place for you to find out what's

happening in the Swarm, find out who's who, share in some of the fantastic

success stories our enterprising apprentices—and of course have a bit of fun.

I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I

have and remember to send us your stories,

Chris Perry, Managing Director

Swarm Wins New Investment We are patting ourselves on our backs as we are delighted to announce that we

are one of 12 winners of the Corporate Social Venturing (CSV) Challenge.

Over 200 applications were received since the CSV Challenge began earlier this

year. Successful applicants were paired with mentors and received the

opportunity to pitch for a £50,000 investment from the programme, funded by

corporate partners Barclays, Experian, First Ark, Fusion 21, University of

Northampton and Places for People with backing from the Social Incubator Fund

(Cabinet Office). Barclays acts as lead corporate partner for the CSV programme

as part of their 5 Million Young Futures ambition.

The 12 successful ventures were chosen by an expert judging panel from a short-

list of 15 who were invited to take part in the Caterpillars’ Cocoon event – a two-

day pitching session held in Nottingham during October.

‘Swarm is really starting to build momentum’, said Founder Robert Ashton, ‘and

this investment, together with the practical support Big Issue Invest’s corporate

partners, will really help us to grow and benefit more enterprising young people’

By Robert Ashton : Chairman & Founder of Swarm

The Swarm Team Grows Shannon joins the team as the Operations Assistant

and will be working in all areas of the business but

primarily working with our employers to find the right

potential young apprentices to fill their vacancies.

“Shannon in her first few days has already proved that

she has the mind-set to be very effective and has

already starting to take ownership of how she will bring

in a return on investment for the business. We look

forward to supporting her through developing the role

and bringing new creative ideas into the business which

will be encouraged as part of the Enterprise

qualification,” says Jessica Juby, Operations Manager.

“Well so far I have constantly been enthralled by

everybody’s enthusiasm to get things up and running

and it has been quite exciting. I am glad to be in a

training position again because I just feel that there is

so much more that I need to learn. I look forward to

growing the role with Swarm and in helping to grow the

business,” says Shannon.

BUZZ Swarm News

From the Editor Dear Readers,

Swarm is presenting you with a new magazine called BUZZ as we want to let you share in other Swarm apprentice news and stories, learn why

employers have taken on a Swarm apprentice and show the business community the benefits of having a Swarm apprentice in their organisations.

I would like to thank employer, Ray, and Swarm apprentice, Yanny, at R.E.G. Energy Services for taking part in the featured interview, Robert for

taking part in the exclusive interview, and Swarm tutor Susan for taking part in the ‘Inside Swarm’ article—you’ve made the first edition of BUZZ

much more exciting!

The featured interview with R.E.G. Energy Services with Ray and Yanny goes through what aspects of the apprenticeship with Swarm have

benefited not only individually, but the business as well. It was a pleasure getting to know them both and to know a little bit more about the

business.

The interview with Robert was about getting inside the entrepreneurial mind-set and the benefits of having this mind-set. We had quite a few

laughs doing this and I hope you will enjoy reading through it.

You will get to know Swarm tutor Susan, why

she enjoys working with young people and what

she looks for in a good apprentice.

We find out about Swarm apprentice Chris

Reeve’s time at the Burberry HQ in London—he

thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot about

branding, as you can tell from the level of

enthusiasm from his article.

The Top Swarm Apprentice Tip article will also

prove to be of some use for you apprentices

when you go in to work. I hope that these

articles help you and that you gain some

valuable information.

We had Korean visitors come over to Swarm for a few days. They came to the UK to learn more about our education system and apprenticeships.

They were very nice people and had an excellent work ethic. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit and lots of photographs were taken! They went to

the Norwich for Jobs event, got to meet the Sheriff of Norwich, and went to Ormiston Victory Academy and Wymondham College. They had very

good tours of both the schools and asked lots of questions. By the end of their trip they had lots of new ideas to take back to Korea.

We have also featured Swarm’s mascot, Millie – to all those who have no idea who she is, she is a Chihuahua X Yorkshire Terrier who came into

work with her owner one day, and has been coming ever since – and we’ve decided to feature her in BUZZ because she is extremely cute and

one of our Swarm values is “Enjoyment” so we like to throw in a bit of fun.

As a Swarm apprentice, I can honestly say to any young people who are considering doing an apprenticeship, that you will find the Swarm

apprentice experiences interesting, and hopefully these will help you to make your decision.

So then, I hope you find the first issue of BUZZ to prove interesting, creative and also a bit of fun. To all of our apprentices and businesses, thanks

for reading it :)

Operations Update

Where can I even begin to discuss such a pivotal year for Swarm? 2013 saw its inception and 2014 saw exciting changes

and growth that have kept us rushed off our feet. As Swarm’s first employee, for the first half of the year I’ve portrayed the

image of duck; calm and collected on top but paddling my butt off trying to stay afloat and get to where I need to be. Sure,

it’s not been plain sailing and stormy seas have threatened to capsize me with managing the day-to-day running of a start

-up while juggling personal challenges, but I now have a strong team

around me. I’m writing this column the day after I’ve experienced my

first work Christmas party…. A big step forward showing that we have a

large enough team to celebrate a successful year. Chris Perry joined

Swarm as Managing Director in August and soon after we found

Shannon Watkins, my Operations Assistant and editor of this very

publication (isn’t she good?).

Although the operations of Swarm have been positively developed in

the last 12 months, the concept remains the same. The team is all very

passionate about working with bright young people that don’t want to

travel the university route and getting them onto exciting

apprenticeships that lead into long-lasting placements. We strive to work with those with the same ideals as us so we can

all pull in the same direction to ensure that apprenticeships are a positive experience for all parties involved.

Throughout January, all Swarm apprentices will be receiving Swarm freebies to

assist them throughout their apprenticeship; ring binder, pen, memory stick and

welcome pack (the pens do look really quite nice; they’re in high demand!) We’re

also creating our graduation ceremony programme which many of you were

asked to give us your input on through a short SurveyMonkey questionnaire.

More information on this will be coming soon! Then there’s the new Swarm

Mentor programme… just another aspect of the business under development to

assist our apprentices in the best way.

We now not only work with the Level 3 Enterprise qualification but, through

Norfolk County Council’s Adult Education, can offer a range of apprenticeships

including Level 2 IT User, AAT, and Marketing. We keep enterprise at our core

though and all Level 2 apprentices can still benefit from enterprise training- employers simply choose up to 4 of the

enterprise workshops that they’d like their apprentices to attend. All at no extra cost to the business owner or the

apprentice!

So, from new beginnings in 2014 to great predicted growth in 2015.

It’s pretty fortunate that I am a Swarm apprentice really, especially one

of the founder/chairman of the organisation itself! In this article I’ll

reveal why I am such a happy apprentice right now…

Last month I was lucky enough to visit Burberry’s global headquarters in

London. Swarm was invited to attend a day’s workshop in marketing and

sales as part of winning investment from the Big Issue Invest campaign.

Sneaking in yet again (I’m making a habit of this) Robert, my boss, couldn’t

attend so sent me on my way to the big smoke with the new Managing

Director of Swarm, Chris Perry.

I suppose this is just one example of why being a Swarm apprentice is

better than the bog standard industry 101 folding letters all day, everyday… I

learnt so much and must say it was a fantastic experience and privilege to

be able to take part in the session in the rather grand building (pictured) that

had various digital screens of Mr. Beckham everywhere…

The main learning points and tips from the trip were the following:

It is extremely important when working on the branding / marketing in

your business that there is a difference that makes you stand out from the crowd. Not only this but there’s the importance of

expressing this difference in the right way through building up your own brand story. Ask yourself why you are the way you are.

People buy into stories lots more than just the product itself sometimes!

Branding is more than just logo’s and pretty pictures. Celebrate your founder, the creator of the organisation you’re working for.

There’s three other sections that need to be looked at when focusing on your branding plan - these are the attitude of the people that

work within the business, the dress code and also the territory in which you work everyday or the types of places you work at.

A useful way to look at your business’ branding is by breaking everything down into the following categories and listing underneath

them: PRODUCT | ENVIRONMENT | BEHAVIOUR | COMMUNICATION

Social media - *gulp* the best way to get return on this time-demanding task and conquer it is to keep everything personalised and

different, create your own digital ethos (the way you do things online) and use as many images as possible. For 2015 the usage of

videos online will rocket so by creating short 1-3 minutes clips you will grab your target market’s attention almost instantly. Be

modern, be informative sometimes and don’t forget to have some fun!

So, as you can gather - it was a superb trip that I would have never been able to attend had I not signed up to become a Swarm

apprentice. Young people out there these days are brain washed into thinking you will only get somewhere by going to university and

getting a degree. I know this isn’t Buckingham Palace, but this is proof in the pudding of how wrong they are!

The Swarm team had a visit from some Korean

students from Yonsei University this month;

they came to the UK to learn more about our

education system and apprenticeships.

Everyone had a great time and loads of

photographs were taken! Read their thoughts

below on their experiences with Swarm during

their research trip.

“We are an undergraduate research team from South

Korea, which is funded by Yonsei University. We are

searching for the best practices of career education in

UK and we would like to introduce those successes to

Korea. We found Swarm Apprenticeships remarkable in

doing such great apprentice programmes. It was quite

impressive that Swarm’s programmes have been done

in an aspect of entrepreneurship. It was also interesting

that the founding spirit of

Swarm apprenticeships

originated from Robert’s

personal experience.

Students deserve a second chance in their life, and apprenticeships are probably one of the best ways to provide such an

opportunity. Regarding the company’s structure,

Swarm Apprenticeships is doing a great job. Even

though it’s a new-born company, the team in Swarm

performed their distinct abilities to successfully thrive

in the field of education.

South Korea is in a start-up level in career education

for teenagers. Students still suffer from a test-based

educational atmosphere. But there have been some

changes and movement for making a better

education which relates

to real life experience

and careers. The city

Norwich was amazing.

They have many

meaningful projects like

‘Norwich for Jobs’ and

many social

enterprises to support

apprenticeships of

young people. Not only

the city’s heritage

outstanding but the

education trials are as

well, including the

school, Ormiston Victory Academy. The whole local

community seems to successfully share visions about

education for the next generation.

The great hospitality of Swarm Apprenticeships and also

Norwich city itself made our journey much more precious.

It will be a great help to Korea for making better ways for

career education. We will have unforgettable memories

which will be with us our whole lives.”

Over the last year things have changed A LOT for me, before I was just running a youth club for 7-13 year olds – now, I’m still at the

youth club, I work as a full time Swarm apprentice, I’m a part of a few local committees, and I am also running for local council.

It all started once my friend introduced me to Corinne, as I had some spare time and she was looking for someone to help her out at the Leaping Hare. I called her and we arranged a time to meet. The next thing I know, I’m volunteering two days a week with Corinne. After I had been there a few months, Corinne approached me to see if how I felt if they hired me as part

of an apprenticeship – I jumped at the opportunity.

This started the domino effect to where I am now. I am now the office manager and projects coordinator at Leaping Hare, provider of Thetford’s great Information Centre. I work with a team of volunteers to provide a box office service, bus trips, local information to the people

that live in and visit the town, and sell fine crafts by local artists; to name but a few.

If you are interested in the things we do follow

@leapinghareorg

Since I've started working with Ray, I've been able to achieve a lot of things in life which are the ‘next steps’ as such. I was able to start driving lessons (which every 20 year old wants to do!) and I was able to insure and tax a car myself. I also managed to save up for a new laptop

after mine packed up so I could continue with my love of drawing.

As Ray has given me this opportunity, I give my all to the business; I've helped innovate within the business to make it more efficient with my ideas! For example time sheets so Ray can

keep track and just a simple telephone book to take messages.

I've recently taken on more responsibilities in the company with Energy Contracts. Ray taught me the basics of what I needed to know, and now I do them by myself! As Energy Contracts are the core to our business, it’s quite a large responsibility, but I felt I was up to the task, and

without boasting, I feel I've done extremely well – I’ve been getting the best prices for our clients!

I get left in charge of the office while Ray’s either out on site meetings or having a holiday. This means I have to take on Ray’s job role and also continue with my own while managing another employee, which is a huge task for an apprentice! Ray has faith in me that I’ll do well, and I haven’t let him

down.

We've recently become Limited as the company is growing, which means

onwards and upwards from here!

An interview with Swarm assessor, Susan Howes-Ward

What’s your background? I am from

Australia; I moved to the UK in 2000 and love

it here (although the weather can be a bit

pants at times!). I completed my A-level

(equivalent) education many years ago and

went straight in to work.

I have worked in building firms, football clubs,

an Architecture council and in education. I

set up a very small business selling gluten-

free cakes at one time (including creating my own website). Not many people

know that I am a bit arty (I have a design qualification) and I obtained a first

class degree in history a little over two years ago.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I wanted to work in design somehow.

What do you look for in a good learner? Someone with enthusiasm

and the willingness to learn new things about themselves, others and the

workplace.

What’s your favourite thing about working with young people?

They are often refreshingly innocent to workplace politics. Their outlook on life

is unburdened.

What do you like doing in your spare time? Decorating my home

and gardening. I also love travelling both within and beyond the UK! In the

summer my daughter and I went to New York together which was fab to say the

least.

What piece of advice would you say to your younger self? Don’t

worry about what other people think; you’ll do alright.

BUZZ Main Feature

An Interview with Swarm’s Dynamic Duo ~ Ray Gilding and Swarm Ap-prentice Yanny Overton, from R.E.G Energy Services

R.E.G Energy Services was

established in October 1994, when

the energy market opened up to all

users.

There are three sides to the

company, which are Energy Supply

Contract Negotiations, Energy

Monitoring System, and the

facilitating of Utilities delivery to

development sites.

These projects could be

development sites of one or two

houses to factories, a multiple

housing development and office

developments. The customers they

serve are Industrial, Commercial and

Agricultural businesses.

Firstly, we interviewed

Yanny—see what she says

about learning with Swarm

and how she has benefited:

How has the apprenticeship

developed your skills so far?

“Well so far I’d say that it has

developed my skills very well, and it

has made me think more about my

actions. It has also

made me realise about my body

language in front of clients, and

how I think about things in

general, it has made me think

in a more business-like manner.

The future

looks good… We

have big plans

It has also made me think about

up-managing, being more

organised, and it’s made me more

innovative - I have written job sheets

and time sheets to keep myself

organised, and have also been keeping

Ray more organised. The

apprenticeship has also helped me to

reflect on myself a lot more, and has

helped me to know myself better.”

What do you think is the most

important thing you’ve learnt so far?

“The most important thing I’ve learnt so

far is about leadership and teamwork –

leadership and management styles,

this is very important because you get

to know your colleagues (my

management style is Laissez—faire).

My assessor also gets me to do a self-

analysis, so I get to know what sort of

person I am, which is really helpful and

important.”

What do you think the future holds

for you?

“The future looks pretty good for me, as

I am building a career, and in the future

I will continue to build on my career.

We have big plans for the business – at

the moment I am a Business Assistant,

but I am preparing to take on a

managerial role for the future.”

Swarm Apprenticeships Ltd www.swarmapprentice.org.uk @swarm_tweets

Ray Gilding and Yanny Overton

Page 13: BUZZ magazine

Tell me about your experiences in

the apprenticeship and in the

business—what have you

enjoyed?

“There’s so much that I have

enjoyed, I like the workshops, I really

like my assessor, he is extremely

helpful, and will go through any

problems if I have any, give me

advice and help me to deal with them.

In the business I have enjoyed getting

more responsibilities, like dealing with

the energy contracts.

Everybody’s really

enthusiastic at the

workshops

There is so much that I have

enjoyed…I don’t know where to

start… I really enjoy it all! At the

workshops, everybody’s enthusiasm

bounces off each other, especially

when we do the presentations - we

fuel each other and ask each other

really challenging questions.”

You are going to become a Swarm

mentor. How do you think the

mentor programme will benefit

you?

“I think that it will put me into a more

responsible role, and I will become

more of a mature person, and it will

also grow me as a person. I like the

idea that everybody will look up to me

as a good example. It will make me

feel like I am a bigger part of Swarm,

and I want to continue being a part of

Swarm in the future.”

There’s so much that I

have enjoyed

We then interviewed

Ray—see how much

taking on a Swarm

apprentice has benefited

him and his business:

Why did you start R.E.G Energy

Services?

Ray started the business because his

job at Eastern Electricity was being

abolished. After considering a

number of options within Eastern

Electricity, he decided to start his own

energy consultancy business – R.E.G

Energy Services.

How did the apprenticeship with

Yanny come about, and why?

“The business had been going

through a rough period for about 18

months. My options were to A) carry

on as I was, with no help. B) Shut up

shop altogether or C) employ

somebody to help me turn the

business around – something I

couldn’t realistically afford.

I decided to get help and employ

somebody part-time. I chose Yanny

and she started working 2 days a

week while at Art College. After a few

months I received an email from

Chris Perry, of Norfolk Chamber of

Commerce, telling us about an

apprenticeship scheme.

I contacted Chris to find out if we

would be eligible and he explained

more about the Swarm

apprenticeship scheme. WE were

eligible so Yanny and I signed up to

the Swarm scheme, which I certainly

do not regret.

I certainly do not regret

signing up to Swarm

The Swarm apprenticeship scheme

has helped to bring out Yanny’s

abilities and build her confidence in

dealing with clients and the business

as a whole.”

Be Savvy on Social Media! Social media is very quickly becoming, if not the best form in which to get the word of your

business or organisation out into today’s changing modern world.

It is vital when approaching the usage of social media for your business that you treat it in the

right way, depending on the different platform and what your target market is. I strongly believe

if you don’t get this right, you’re both wasting your time, but also potentially damaging your

businesses reputation.

But enough of scaring you, the opportunities social media can rapidly create for you all no

matter what organisation, business or target market you’re approaching is phenomenal. If you’re

not yet on social media because ’you don’t have the time’ or ’you don’t understand it’ this is a

great opportunity for a young apprentice to do the job for you!

In this issue, I’m going to be specifically focusing on Twitter . This social platform is one of the

fastest moving and popular in the world and can work wonders, especially for SME’s trying to

compete with the big boys - it is possible!

So without further ado, you can view this issue’s Twitter tips below. These tactics could help

create more business for you in 2015…

Don’t just push, converse - anyone can chuck information out there, but what creates an

engaging ‘tribe’ in your brand is that engagement. Talk to your followers!

Follow the 80 / 20 rule - as well as blowing your own trumpet you should also support your own

community. 80% sharing and 20% shouting about your business is a great way to start out.

Tweet like a newspaper headline - you’ve got to grab people’s attention as they quickly scroll

so it’s essential you get that attention within 1 second. Think headline!

Be useful - a nice mix of sales, tips and personal interaction outputs can get you far.

Robert Ashton, the man behind Swarm, talks

We interviewed Robert Ashton to find out more about the

entrepreneurial mindset:

What led you to become an

entrepreneur? Well, one thing led to another. I

just get intrigued by things, and interested in

conundrums, why people choose not to do things

in different ways. I then kind of make a noise,

then I get interested and then I make more noise.

How would you describe what an

entrepreneur is? I’d say that an entrepreneur

is somebody who strives to change the way

things are done, the way something is done,

something that interests them, in ways which are

sustainable and practical for everybody.

How has your entrepreneurialism

developed? In one word – practise. Well, to be

honest, I don’t really see myself as an

entrepreneur. I just do what I do – I just find

someone that is interesting and I get involved

with them. Whilst people who own a business will

call themselves as an entrepreneur, owning a

business is like having a barrel with a tap on, you

just turn the tap on and water comes out; but that

isn’t being entrepreneurial – being

entrepreneurial is like having a crate of water,

and finding a way of working with it without

having a barrel.

Why did you set up Swarm? I set up

Swarm when I did some business research

BUZZ Exclusive Interview

round the eastern part of the country when the

Enterprise qualification was still being developed.

The businesses said to me that they loved the

qualification, and they loved what it could do,

they loved the focus on small businesses but

they found that dealing with the traditional

apprenticeship moral, providers, bureaucracy etc,

was something of a nightmare and they really

didn’t want to do it, but if you say to me that

something can’t be done, then I have to prove

them wrong.

What are your top 5 tips on developing the

entrepreneurial mindset? The first thing is to

know yourself. The better you know yourself,

your strengths and weaknesses, your interests,

your passions, the more likely you are to be able

to work with other people. The second thing

would be, making a goal. The third thing would

be to be determined. The fourth would be

recognise that there are things that you won’t

know about. The fifth tip would be to have four.

What are the benefits of an entrepreneurial

mindset? You get things done, and you succeed

at things – but you have to recognise the

opportunities and seize them.

What entrepreneur would you most like to

meet and why? Well I guess the people who I

find the most interesting are those that have a

long way to go, in terms of time, and /or distance

or have a lot to do to achieve ambition. But I

would have liked to have met Hitler, he had the

potential to be a brilliant leader and really change

the face of Europe in a good way, but somehow

he flipped over to the dark side and did other

things. Everyone has a good side and a bad side,

and obviously with him the bad side won, as

history suggests.

What were your aspirations when you were

younger? When I was your age I had no

aspirations. When I was a kid I wanted to be a

vet, only interested in large animals, though, not

cats and dogs, but I did very badly academically

so that was out of the question. I would say to

anybody your age to actually have clear

aspirations of what they want to do in the future,

and to keep doing things to reach those

aspirations.
