After almost 6 years in Japan, we are planning to returnhome for
a year furlough. We have received tentative confirmation ofour
reservations on the S. S. PRESIDENT WILSON sailing on May 22from
Yokohama, Japan to San Francisco. The total fare for the six-berth
cabin is $1,350. (This is two adult fares, three half-fares,and one
quarter-fare.) It is due 30 days before sailinq, or onApril 22.
Beside this- to tie up the loose ends here before we
go(furniture storage, fares to Yokohama, etc.) and travel in
theUnited states as far as Indiana, We will need, we think,
around$620. We should have about $1,970, altogether.

missionary"?V/ell novr, v;e are that. Throu^ no pre-plann- !ing of
our own. It is just one of the occupational hazards of the
missionary life, Isuppose there are coD5)ensations, hut v/e
haven'tfound it too different from heing a recruitagain.
Seriously, though, we realize that manypeople have never heard
of us, and that manyothers do not know us or our work v/ell.
Thissheet is for you. It is full of statistics, hutdon't let that

Don Burney was horn in Dallas, Texas, on I-fey 29, 1928 (now 33)
"''he second of fourhoys. When he was four, the family moved to
Missouri, where he became a Christian whenhe was 12 years old. At
15 he went to Portland, Oregon, vdth his family, majored
inElectronics in hi^ school, and continued in electrcnics in the
llavy from 19A6 to 19^*Leaving the Navy, he entered Nortl^est
Christian Collgge (Eugene, Ore,) in 19A8, spendinghis summer
vacations working at Mbfeinley Indian Mission (Toppenish,
Washington), In 1950he ;vas recalled tc active service in the Naval
Reserve, married, and in Dec, sailed forKorea, IVhen his ship
landed briefly in Japan, the basis of his future iirork for
Christv;as laid. He \i;as discharged in 1951 in order to continue
his schooling and he enteredLincoln Bible Institute in the January
semester of 1952. ^rom Pehruary, 1952 to 195^ hepreached for the
Ramsey church, and during 195^ he preached for the newly
organizedSanders Hill church outside Ifeimsey (Illinois). In 1955,
having graduated from LBI in 195^,and having taken cne year of
graduate work, he and his family sailed for Japan,
Norma V/ilaon v/as born near Marion, Indiana, on Dec. 29, 1928
(now 32), the older oftwo girls, V/hen about 8 years old, the
family moved to ^fe,cy, Indiana, where Norma graduated from Hi^
School, She had become a Christian in 1938 (shortly before she was
lO).In 19A6 she enrolled in Lincoln Bible Institute, and from 19^8,
tau^t at McKinley IndianI^ssion during summer vacations. After
becoming Norma Burney in 1950, she returned toLinooln Hble
Institute to graduate in 1951, while Don v/as overseas. Paul, their
oldestchild, was born while Don and Norma were living in Eamsey,
111. in January, 195A (now 7"2).
They arrived in Japan on the 25th of July, 1955, lived in Tokyo,
studying language for over a year. There Sarah was born in January,
195^ (now 5'l') After another yearof language study for Don in
Kobe, combined with helping the church in Kobe v;hich I-brs,Ibde
Eultz had started, they moved tn Shikoku, the fourth in size of the
four main islands, There they settled in a small farming village
about six miles from the capitalcity of Kochi Province. 33 persons
have been baptized into Christ during the 3 years, 9months of their
living "friere. A building was built in the city of G-omen (approx,
20,000population) in i960, Joseph tkx (now 3y) v/as born in
Pebruary, 1958. Thomas John wasborn in August, i960 (nov/ 1
year),
Don and Norma and family left Japan in ffey I961 after six years
in Japan, and returnedto the United States for a year of furlough.
They plan to return to Japan during thesummer of I962 to start a
church in a different community of the same general

much interest to very many of our friends. On the other handi we
do want to keep intouch with you, encourage, you to. go on praying
for us, and let you know our progresstoward returning to Japan, The

Our plan is to take you back during this year throu^ the 6 years
we spent inJapan, in the hope that, when we have finished, you wiU
better understand the vrork ofspreading the Gospel in'Japan, This

to do, but hev/ould try. So when v/e got over to Peru for
Christinas hehad already spoken to several 6rigregations 'and had

by no .means certain that all or anyof them v/ill go ahead and help

Bon went last' Saturclay.. and. had two of his wisdom
teethremoved, and he still doesn't eat any solid food. Hetook the
shot-in-the-^rm kind of anesthetic. His faoswelled up an avrful lot
and since it has gone oown theris a hig yellovf spot on his cheek
and down his neck,either from hraise associated with the operating
orthe swelling. (He spoke hoth morning andAlton, Illinois the day
follovhng and he sure afrisht ! He told them that he usually was
symmetrical, andnot always' so Iqp-sided.) They said they had a had

soreness goes out of these, he is to go hack andhave the other tvio

Your son and I are currently having a difference ofopinion as to
v/hether Paul's' hair is long enou^^to cut.

sailing). We haveevery confidence that the Lord will provide for
us. We canot get our visa (permission to enter Japan) until we

the Japanese consulate requires. Our supplies mil
'have to vreiit until our travel is paid for, I guess. Wemay
have to buy olother and some other things for only oneyear (instead
of for 5). It will cost more in the ^that way. Wo have some
insurance that we can borrow from ifwe have to (over $1,000 loan
value) hut we don t want tounless we nnist. . Don's boss has
offered us a Itege refrigerator for$50 off.
Oar travel agency wote us to plan to sail ofJune and to have our
frei^t on the pier by June 13-is going to be a ti^t squeeze since
school isn t out untilthe 3rd. That is only "2 months a\^y

has t^uilts from Central Christian Church
(Portland, Oregon, Don's home church), and the^other^clothesshe
bought for Paul. The quilts are Just wonderful2double bed size, 1
single bed size, and three or four balybed size. They v/ill help a
lot. They are new quilts madeby the ladies of the church.

"HEEE AND NOW"
"You count the kids and I'll count the "bags," I said as
weloaded into the taxi to go to the train last Ifey 15th (196I),In
a fevx minutes v/e left our home in Japan behind and wereheaded for
furlough. Tv/o days later we took an eveningflight from the
aiiTport in Tokyo and arrived in Seattle theevening of tfey 1?.
We were home. Everyone asks if we are happy to be home,and if
everything is the same. Yes, we are very happy to behome again. We
especially enjoy the Christian fello^^rahipand being able to sing
and even "Just ta.llr" in English.I think that the U.S.tliat is,
rettirning to the U.S.does not present the cloange to us who serve
in Japan thatit does in some of the more bada-yard nations of the
v/orld.We are not so impressed v/ith the supermarkets and
department stores, as we are v/ith the great speeds Americans
aretraveling. Not only on the hi^way, but also in theirpersonal and
family lives. I guess we are Just used to amore- easygoing
life.
Our thanks to everyone for their kindness to us since we
havebeen T]ack in the States, And cur thanks to all v;ho have
continued to pray for us and for the Christians we left in
Japan.
