Did you ever hear th story of the littlehoy who was aaked what he wanted to he when hegrew up and he answered a "returned missionary"?V/ell novr, v;e are that. Throu^ no pre-plann- !ing of our own. It is just one of the occupational hazards of the missionary life, Isuppose there are coD5)ensations, hut v/e haven'tfound it too different from heing a recruitagain.

Seriously, though, we realize that manypeople have never heard of us, and that manyothers do not know us or our work v/ell. Thissheet is for you. It is full of statistics, hutdon't let that fri^ten you. There is some information, too.

It has "been a prohlem .to us as'to just what .v/e should do about a nev/sletterwhile we are on furloa^. Thero is, naturally, a shortage of nev/s that would be of

much interest to very many of our friends. On the other handi we do want to keep intouch with you, encourage, you to. go on praying for us, and let you know our progresstoward returning to Japan, The result of our dilemma is this paper"There and Then

    and Here and Now."

Our plan is to take you back during this year throu^ the 6 years we spent inJapan, in the hope that, when we have finished, you wiU better understand the vrork ofspreading the Gospel in'Japan, This is the "There and Then." And then we plan tobring you right up to the"Here and This first issue deals vdth our preparationto gothe three of us^Don, then 27 Nonna 26, and Paul l-g-, V/hile the more trulyinteresting history v/ill naturally come after v/e arrive in Japan, w invite, ypurattention first to virhat it is like to be a missiwnary "recruit."
