If you are dropping or swapping electronic resources, what are the primary reasons

why?

Other Reason: Sandhills partners with another department for one database. They do not have current input from them.

Reasons for Changes in Online Resources for Dis-trict 4 Colleges

Page 10: Budgets for Electronic Resources 7-24-2014

How will the upcoming changes in NC LIVE resources affect your electronic resource

subscriptions and your budget?

We will have to see if ProQuest can meet all needs of EBSCOhost. If not, we may have to purchase access to an EBSCO package.

With the new NC LIVE resources, we will save almost $12,000 per year by cancelling our ProQuest resources that will now be picked up by NC LIVE, including SIRS, Criminal Justice Periodicals, and Nursing & Allied Health Source. Part of that money will be repurposed to other electronic resources.

Page 11: Budgets for Electronic Resources 7-24-2014

How will the upcoming changes in NC LIVE resources affect your electronic resource

subscriptions and your budget?

NC LIVE will be picking up 2 resources we have been subscribing to, which will free up our budget to add other electronic resources. We also plan to drop a 3rd resource since similar resources are available through NC LIVE. We will end up saving money and getting all the resources we need.

I don't think I can explain without swearing! We'll talk at the meeting.

We will have to purchase CINAHL Complete for our Nursing program. So we will have to pay for two electronic resources.

Page 12: Budgets for Electronic Resources 7-24-2014

How will the upcoming changes in NC LIVE resources affect your electronic resource

subscriptions and your budget?

It will likely have a great impact on our budget, as we relied heavily on the Job & Career Accelerator, which was cut from the 2015-17 subscriptions. And it remains to be seen whether the Gale products can adequately replace the EBSCO Academic Premier database.

We have made no firm plans at this moment to add any additional resources for the upcoming fiscal year. After working with the new NC LIVE Resources we will reevaluate our needs.

Page 13: Budgets for Electronic Resources 7-24-2014

How will the upcoming changes in NC LIVE resources affect your electronic resource

subscriptions and your budget?

I recently renewed one electronic resource that is going to be offered through NC LIVE during the 2015-2017 period. Had I known this earlier, I would not have subscribed to the resource. Also, with the NC LIVE Home Grown e-Book Project, I could consider dropping other resources.

Budgets Used for Discovery Tools and Proxy Servers in District 4

Page 16: Budgets for Electronic Resources 7-24-2014

How much did your library spend on discovery/federated search services or

proxy server services over the last 3 years?

Notes: Central Carolina added EZ Proxy in 2013-2014 for $525/year. They added EHIS in 2012-2013.

Cape Fear has had EZ Proxy for years and does not pay for it. They pay $2,000/year for Journal Finder. They are implementing Discovery with their new Innovative ILS and the price is bundled with it.

Page 18: Budgets for Electronic Resources 7-24-2014

How will the changes in NC LIVE resources affect your discovery/

federated search services or proxy server services and your budget?

Since EBSCO databases are being cut, our Integrated Search will become useless since we will only be left with JSTOR and library catalog connectors. Other connectors we had will be picked up by NC LIVE. NC LIVE's new discovery tool, Summon, will be used to replace EHIS. We will direct students to use Summon to retrieve online resources and the library catalog to find physical resources in the library unless Summon can search our catalog too. This will save us money that we can use for other things.

Virtual Elimination of our Discovery Service as long as Proquest's metadata remains under their proprietary hold.

Questions regarding budgeting for electronic resources & services

eBook Subscription Purchases - What do you use and how much do you buy?

Is Credo Reference worth purchasing? Is it possible to get CINAHL through the consortium

for a possible reduced rate? (New EBSCO offers through the Carolina Consortium)

Do you know if NC LIVE is looking at additional companies that provide some of these services where we all could get better rates? (Clarify question & ask Tim Rogers at the Director’s Institute.)

Page 20: Budgets for Electronic Resources 7-24-2014

Questions regarding budgeting for electronic resources & services

Perhaps we could investigate being more active in supporting the Carolina Consortium or Swing, etc. Is there any way that we could collectively share resources without impinging on vendor agreements? Could we try to be more active through Social Media?

What does SACS look for regarding electronic resources when it does it’s evaluations? Has anyone been through a SACS visit recently who can answer this? (Catherine Lee is a SACS reviewer this year, and she says that they have no problem with libraries using electronic resources.)

Other questions?

Page 21: Budgets for Electronic Resources 7-24-2014

Comments

I have requested a quote for the Job & Career Accelerator, which is an extremely important resource for our user base. Depending on its cost, we may have to make additional cuts.
