Brown Coal adjudged as Best House Journal

Public Relation Society of India, (PRSI) a National level premier professional body has selected our House Journal (Brown Coal) for the National Special Jury Award 2013. The Hyderabad Chapter of PRSI organized the 12th Andhra Pradesh Public Relations Conference on 9th February 2013 at Hyderabad. As part of this Conference, PRSI honoured the outstanding talent and creativity of PR practitioners across the country

by presenting awards to the best house journal. Brown coal was nominated for the competition and competed with the creatives of leading Corporates and Multi-National companies. Based on the layout design, contents and innovative methods used, Browncoal was selected for Special Jury Award.

Our house journal had a long journey to achieve this status. Our first House Journal was published during April-June 1962 by the name, 'Lignite Jothi'. It was a combined edition of Tamil & English. During seventies, it was published separately in Tamil & English with names 'Neyveli Seithi chudar' and 'Lignite Calling'. During eighties, the English version was renamed as 'News Flash'. The present 'Minmalar' and 'Brown Coal' version were published from May 1985. From 2003 onwards the Hindi version of Brown Coal joined our family.

While NLC grew, the quality of house journal also grew. It has witnessed the letter press to the offset regime. In the era of computer revolution, it perfectly used the development of computer based printing technology. Awards are not new to Brown Coal as it has already received the third prize among the Corporates of India and the first prize among the Public Sector Enterprises at the 29th All India Public Relations Conference held at Chennai during December 2008.

CMD Message

From the Desk of CMDDear Colleagues,

My heartiest greetings to you all.

We have just completed the Fiscal Year 2012-13. I am very much delighted to note that the year 2012-13 was a successful year for NLC. I take this opportunity to share with you my immense pleasure and satisfaction on our excellent performance during the year 2012-13.

I am very glad to note that we have exceeded the targets in all categories of the production front and registered a significant growth when compared to the previous year 2011-12. Overburden

3removal from all the Mines put together comes to 1674.97LM showing a growth of 1.42% over the previous year 2011-12. Total Lignite production has come to 261.97LT (Lakh Tonnes), which is 6.54% more than that of previous year. In power generation, all the Power Stations put together have generated 19901.79 Million Units, registering a growth of 5.92% over the previous year 2011-12. We can proudly tell, this is the ever time high production level in the history of NLC. Also, I am very happy to say that 139.32 LT of Lignite production in Mine II and Power generation of 11238.26 MU in Thermal Power Station–II and 3319.70 MU in TPS-I Expansion are the highest for any year since inception. Our Thermal Power Stations have achieved the Plant Load Factor (PLF) 77% in TPS-I, 90% in TPS-I Expn. and 87% in TPS-II against the respective norms of 72%, 80% and 75% prescribed by CERC (Central Electricity Regulatory Commission), in which TPS-I Expn. and TPS-II have achieved ever highest PLF since inception. Barsingsar Mine and Power plant are also performing well and started setting new records in its successful operation.

I congratulate all the Employees and the Contract workers for their hard work and dedication for this incredible achievement. As you aware, Our Hon’ ble Union Minister of Coal Shri Sriprakash Jaiswalji. Shri S.K. Srivastava, Secretary, MoC and other MoC Delegates visited Neyveli recently and reviewed the production performance and overall activities of NLC. Really, I am overwhelmed and feel very proud of NLC when the Hon’ ble Union Minister mentioned that NLC is a GOLDEN COMPANY under the Ministry of Coal. Definitely such kind of reference is a true recognition of our overall performance and we must assure that we shall carry forward this distinction with same vigor and spirit and to get many more accolades in future.

We must improve the availability factor of plants and equipments to operate all the existing power plants at the peak level. While we are achieving the growth in the Physical Performance, it is also necessary to achieve the growth in the profitability. To this effect, all of us have to take necessary steps to keep O & M cost within the specified norms and also to improve the productivity by increasing the volume of Production /Generation. Barsingsar Power Plant also has to work at PLF of at least 75% so as to recover the fixed cost.

Regarding our ongoing Projects, works are progressing in 2x500 MW NTPL project at Tuticorin and it is expected to be commissioned in this Financial year, i.e, First Unit by December’ 2013 and Second Unit by March’ 2014. With regard to the 2x250 MW TPS-II Expansion Project, M/s BHEL, Main Plant Package Contractor, is being closely followed-up to expedite the rectification work and to commission the Units by December’ 2013 and January’2014. With the commissioning of these two projects, our Power generation capacity would be increased to 4240 MW from the present capacity of 2740MW

Further for the 12th Plan, we have planned three Mine projects viz, Restructuring of Mine I & IA at 1.50 Million Tonne per Annum

My Best wishes to all.

B.Surender Mohan

(MTPA), 2.00 MTPA Devangudi Mine and 2.50 MTPA Hadla & Palana Mine. In Power sector, projects viz. First unit of 2x 500 MW Neyveli New Thermal Power Project, 250 MW Barsingsar Thermal Power Station Expansion, First unit of 3 x 660 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project (GTPP), our Joint Venture Project with UPRVUNL (NUPPL) are planned to be executed. 50 MW Wind Power Project and 25 MW Solar power Project are also on anvil. At the end of 12th plan NLC will have a total lignite mining capacity of 36.60 MTPA and a total power generating capacity of 5725 MW.

Obviously, we should have a committed fuel linkage to the proposed coal based power projects for its sustained operation. It is now our endeavor to identify domestic sources as well as coal blocks abroad. We have already taken action towards this direction and applications have already been submitted to Govt. of India for the allotment of coal block in Kente extension block in Chattisgarh for our NTPL project and coal blocks in Bhalamuda & Banai in Chattisgarh, Chandrabilla & Kudanali Laburi in Odisha and Pachwara south in Jharkand for the GTPP. We have also floated EOI (Expression of Interest) tender for identifying suitable coal assets abroad for acquisition or strategic partnership in development of coal mines. It must be in our priority to expedite the process for establishing coal linkage from domestic source as well as abroad to support our Growth Plan.

It gives me immense pleasure to note that our company has bagged the 'SCOPE Meritorious Award for Environmental Excellence and Sustainable Development for the year 2011-12' instituted by the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises in recognition of Environment Protection.

In addition, our company has won the following prestigious awards:

l‘Best Enterprise Award-2012’

l ‘State Level Small Savings Award for the year 2011-12’

l ‘Organisation with Innovative HR Practices Award’

lOur house journal ‘BROWNCOAL’ has won the 'National Special Jury Award -2013'

Our Annual Plan for the year 2013-14 has been approved by GOI and we have signed the MoU with Ministry of Coal and our Internal Targets have also been fixed. I expect that we shall work with a clear sense of perception and rededicate our efforts to achieve the targets set for 2013-14. I am confident that with our concerted and collective efforts we would be able to accomplish all our goals.

State Govt. with an annual capacity of 16,000 Tonnes of lignite per annum.

Later, the company was taken over by Government of India and NLC was incorporated on 14.11.1956. Now, the sapling has grown into multifold as a giant tree spreading its branches in all parts of the

country with a yield of 3.06 Crore tonnes of lignite per annum and 2740 MW of power. Shri Jambulinga Mudaliar, will be remembered forever for his untiring efforts.
