The goal of this conference is to allow masters students, PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows to communicate their research in the form of oral presentations or posters, exclusively in English. The privileged international scientific frame that we provide is comparable to any major international scientific conference.

A wide range of topics in Life Sciences is discussed and includes: Neurosciences, Immunology, Medicine and Physiology, Imaging and Bioinformatics, Cell Biology, Genetics, among others. This interdisciplinarity encourages young researchers from various backgrounds to participate and present their work, while exploring other fields.

Every year, we welcome young researchers from the organizing research centers - INSTITUT CURIE, INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY of the ECOLE NORMALE SUPERIEURE, INSTITUT JACQUES MONOD, INSTITUT PASTEUR and the UNIVERSITY PARIS DESCARTES - as well as young researchers from other Parisian institutions such as the Parisian Collège de France, the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Chimie de Paris, the National Museum of Natural History and many young researchers from France and abroad. In addition, the public will be complemented by engineers, technicians, senior scientists, and of course group leaders and unit directors from leading research institutions.

Created at the initiative of the Association of PhD Students and Young PhDs of the Institut Curie (ADIC), co-organized with the associations of the Ecole Normale Supérieure (SPIBens), the University Paris Diderot (DiDocs) and the Student Association of Medicine and Pharmacy Sciences (AMPS), this event then merged with the annual Young Researchers Conference of the Institut Pasteur (StaPa). In previous years, the Office of the Museum Students (BDEM) of the National Museum of Natural History, the Circle of PhD students and Doctors from the University Paris Descartes (the Cartesiens), the Association of PhD Students of Chimie Paris Tech (ATCP) and the Students of the National Veterinary School Maison-Alfort have joined the organizing committee and thus contributed to making it a multifaceted and diverse conference, highly attractive to young researchers.

The participating Associations form the Federation of Young Researchers in Life Sciences and are represented in the organizing committee of the conference. Its members, PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows, manage and coordinate all

logistical aspects essential to the set-up of the conference. Among other responsibilities, they are in charge of advertising, registration, selection of abstracts, welcoming of the participants, travel scholarships, and invitation of chairmen and keynote speakers.

Our goal is to provide young scientists with an environment that promotes formal and informal scientific interactions, offering opportunities for career discussions and sustainable international scientific relations. Surrounded by their peers, young researchers feel less intimidated and have highlighted the friendly and informal atmosphere, the valuable professional exchanges and scientific discussions, and the opportunity to ask questions at leisure among the qualities of YRLS. In addition, the conference allows participants to present their projects even at the early stages of research, when new ideas are most beneficial. By virtue of the diversity of subjects represented at this YRLS conference master students, PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows can receive scientific advice from various perspectives, allowing them to advance in their respective projects and career paths.

The promotion and advertising of the conference will begin in January 2015. Advertising will be done not only by the communication service of the Federation of Young Researchers, but also through communication and public relation departments of the organizing institutes, at as many graduate schools and research centers as possible both in France and abroad. We are, of course, also present on all major social networking sites. All essential information concerning the conference is posted on the event’s official website www.yrls.fr.

For the fifth consecutive year the young researcher associations of some of the leading Parisian institutions united in the Federation of Young Researchers in Life Sciences to organize the Young Researchers in Life Sciences Conference. This event was held at the Institut Pasteur, in Paris, on May 26-28, 2014.

This year, we welcomed over 250 participants from 10 different countries. More than 150 talks and posters were presented on eleven major research topics of the Life Sciences. To increase the ratio of international participants, we offered sixteen travel grants. Participants were selected based on outstanding abstracts. These grants have helped to host researchers from Greece, Poland, Tunisia, Russia, Australia, Germany, USA, England, India, Portugal and Italy.

The President of the Federation opened the conference by saying that communication and exchange are essential to thedevelopment of a rigorous scientific reasoning. He insisted that this statement is quite applicable even to researchers at the early stages of their careers. Prof. Christian Bréchot, Director of the Research Center of Institut Pasteur, delivered the opening speech of the conference, stressing the importance of this event for young researchers in his institution. He also discussed the importance of interdisciplinary research and how Institut Pasteur will take up these challenges.

Each day of the conference consisted of three to four talk sessions and a poster session. For each talk session, the four best abstracts of each field had been pre-selected by a committee of senior researchers. All partici-pants had the opportunity to present a poster. A jury of senior scientists of each field, professors and research fellows, graded the presentations and awarded three prizes for the best talk and best poster. The French Society

of Biology and the Federation Reaumur offered three excellence awards for PhD theses of 2013. Finally, participants voted for the best oral presentation and best poster, awarding the public prize.

To provide examples of scientific excellence, we invited two distinguished keynote speakers. Dr. Benjamin Prud’homme (IBDML , Marseille) and Prof. Karlheinz Meier (Kirchhoff Institute for Physics , Heidelberg), each of whom gave a one-hour lecture about their outstanding work in their respective fields.

Alongside the scientific events, participants could take part in a round table discussion with Giacomo Bastanelli, CEO at Meiogenix, and Xavier Heiligen-stein, co-founder of CryoCap Cell, about the opportunities in non-academic careers. This resulted in a lively and constructive discussion addressing many important issues for the careers of young researchers. Concomitantly, a bio-informatics workshop about the ICY software was organized by Dr. Alexandre Dufour. Dr. Anne Le Goff, founder of the Workshop Coming Days (AJA) and

member of the Technical University of Compiègne, conducted a workshop on “Contributing to Integrity & Responsibility as Young Researchers” addressing the concepts of integrity and ethics in the research practice.

To conclude, Prof. Jonathan Weitzman, Research Director at the University Paris 7 Denis Diderot, gave us a glimpse of his work in epigenetics and plasticity of cellular phenotypes. He also discussed research in general and its importance in the transmission and production of knowledge in our society.

In addition to scientific interactions, we also encourage social interactions among the participants. For example, we organized a welcome event on the eve of the conference. Those who attended were able to get to know each other during a guided walk through the center of Paris and a shared dinner. In addition, we held a “Wine, Cheese & Posters” evening during a

poster session and we concluded the conference with a cocktail for participants and organizers. In terms of accommodation facilities, we have a couchsurfing system in place, whereby researchers based in Paris can host participants coming from elsewhere. The participants can then stay free of charge and discover Paris from a local perspective while interacting with local young researchers.

Having reached its 5th Anniversary, the YRLS Conference is now doubtlessly an established event. This Edition was revealing of the experience in event management acquired by the successive organizing committees, while the enthusiasm and determination of the new members of the committee has kept the conference dynamic and ambitious for yet another year.
