Henry Stickell and Dorothy Hill have coauthored the2001 update of the ‘‘Brandon/Hill Selected List ofPrint Books and Journals for the Small Medical Li-brary.’’ Henry Stickell has worked as an assistant onfive previous selected lists—small medical library 1,nursing 2, and allied health 2.

ganizations (JCAHO) designated the Brandon/Hill se-lected list as a knowledgebase to consult for up-to-dateauthoritative resources. JCAHO does not require hos-pitals to have libraries, just information! The Brandon/Hill list no longer appears in the current JCAHO Com-prehensive Manual for Hospitals (CAMH) (StandardIM.I.2) [2]. However, JCAHO believes that effective in-formation management applies to all methods wheth-er paper-based or electronic.

‘‘A Library for Internists’’ published by the Ameri-can College of Physicians ceased with the ninth edi-tion, 1997. It, too, had been noted by JCAHO as aknowledge-based resource. ‘‘A Library for Internists’’began publication in 1973 and had been updated everythree years [3].

A Core Collection of Medical Books and Journals hasbeen published as a British and international alterna-tive to the Brandon/Hill selected list. The third editionwas published in 1997; it is scheduled to be updatedevery two years. Coverage of the British list is pri-marily clinical. The last one we know about is dated1997 [4].

Approximately $124,000 would be needed to pur-chase all of the 630 books and 143 journals (2001 sub-scriptions) on this list—$77,300 for books and $46,700for 2001 subscriptions. Items suggested for first pur-chase, 214 books and 60 journals, are designated withasterisks (*), because health sciences librarians usuallycannot afford or may not need all of or most of thelisted publications. The cost of the asterisked items isapproximately $55,000, $33,200 for the books and$21,800 for 2001 journal subscriptions.

In response to numerous requests from health sci-ences librarians, we have chosen from the book list, those titles which could be considered for a ‘‘minimalcore list.’’ These 81 titles have been marked with dag-gers (†*) before the asterisks; the total amount for thesebooks is approximately $14,300. The minimal core listconsists of books for librarians who can only choose afew titles from each category.

Book price totals are based on the one-volume pricein instances when books have been published in eitherone or the more expensive two-volume sets and on‘‘nonmember’’ prices when indicated for associationpublications. If a book is published in both hard coverand paperback, the hard cover price has been used.Journal subscriptions are quoted at the print institu-tional rate.

The increases in book and journal prices for titles inthis list and its previous versions are shown in Table1. From 1965 to 2001, there has been an increase of718% ($15.00 to $122.76) in the average price per booktitle. During the same thirty-six year period, the av-erage subscription has increased 2,251% ($13.90 to$312.85).

The figures stated here apply only to publicationsthat appear in this list or have appeared over the years

in its predecessors. The ‘‘per-title’’ calculation includesthe cost of all volumes in a multivolume set. The av-erage volume price for the 699 books that make up the630 title book collection is $110.64, $12.12 less than theper-title average. In instances where a title appears ineither one or two volumes, it has been considered asone volume in the physical volume count. Titles dovary from list to list, but the cost figures are represen-tative of those being incurred by health sciences li-braries in acquiring current print health sciences lit-erature.

The majority of the publications are clinical in con-tent, although we have included clinically relevant ba-sic science books. We have omitted basic sciences jour-nals, because most health sciences libraries cannot jus-tify the extremely high subscription costs for low-usematerial; the Web, fax machine, or document deliveryservice can make the contents of these journals read-ily accessible. If basic science journals are required, they should be purchased on a resource-sharing basiswith other libraries. The journal list is not intendedto support research activities. We have attempted toassemble a well-balanced current collection of au-thoritative English-language books and journals, pri-marily in the clinical sciences. Most, but not all, of thepublications originated in the United States. Whentwo books appear to be of comparable content andauthorship, we have purposely chosen the most re-cent one.

In the 2001 book list, 89% of the titles have been

Page 3: Brandon Hill

published in 1998 or later; 292 books cost $100.00 eachor more. Because current books have been emphasized, some standard works that have not been revised forseveral years have been dropped from this list. We areaware that ‘‘newer’’ is not necessarily ‘‘better,’’ butcurrent books have been given priority. We have notbeen able to review every English-language biomedi-cal book and journal published during the past twoyears. Therefore, exclusion of a publication from thislist in no way implies that it is not high quality. Wesimply may not have seen the item in question. If atall possible, we have tried to include less expensivealternatives along with the expensive books, but inmany subject areas inexpensive quality books no lon-ger exist. However, we have included 164 books thathave list prices of $50.00 or less. Price information hasbeen supplied by publishers and vendors and is as ac-curate as we could obtain at the time of publication.Price increases are to be expected.

This list is, as the title implies, limited to print me-dia—books and journals. Health sciences librarianswho need to purchase audiovisuals or microcomputersoftware, but lack knowledge of such media, shouldrequest assistance from other librarians who have ini-tiated successful media programs or from academicmedia centers. We have not perused the electronicbooks and journals available on the Web or CD-ROM,and we do not intend to do so at this time.

Book titles in this list are divided into fifty-nine sub-ject categories and the journals into forty six. No newsubject categories have been added during the interimtwo-year period.

If a book has more than two authors or editors, thenotation ‘‘[and others]’’ is made after the name of thesenior author or editor. In the index of authors andeditors, we have included only the senior persons; co-authors and coeditors do not appear. If the name ofthe original author or editor is an integral part of thebook title, that name appears in the index.

Because of mergers, takeovers, and the changing ofpublishers’ names, the imprint on a book may not nec-essarily be indicative of the publisher who is presentlydistributing the book. We have tried to cite the booksby using the names of the publishers who are cur-rently distributing them. It is difficult to keep track ofwho is publishing what. As a matter of course, weroutinely indicate the publisher from whom a bookcan be obtained in the United States if it is not of U.S.origin. The book list shows the current publisher thatowns the title. Persons needing information related tonursing or allied health should consult the other twoBrandon/Hill lists that deal specifically with nursingor allied health; both were published in 2000 [5, 6].This list, as well as those for nursing and allied health, will be updated quarterly between the published bi-ennial revisions in A Major Report, a quarterly news-

letter originated by Alfred Brandon and continued byMajors Scientific Books [7].

After thirty-six years, we are pleased to publish thenineteenth version of the ‘‘Brandon/Hill Selected Listof Print Books and Journals for the Small Medical Li-brary.’’ We have attempted to provide a useful, bal-anced selection of the current biomedical print litera-ture that we have examined during the past two years. We find it most interesting that the list shows up onthe high-tech Web in numerous places and in numer-ous parts and pieces. We are likewise amazed at thelongevity of this project and wonder how much longerit will continue on.
