Time is changing. Earlier Assam and the Northeastern stateswere ‘Outreach’ for the investors. But, now, the North-Easthas grabbed the attention of the investors. The (positive) effectis clearly visible in the economic scenario of these states. From Tourism, Handloom & Handicraft, Food processingetc. to IT, MSME sector the NE has great potentiality to climbin the ladder of development. Considering this more and moreinvestors are coming and what the most important fact is thatthe employability field has increased to a great extent. Greatnumbers of youth got absorbed in various industries which isa very good sign in this conflict ridden region. The Centraland State government introduced various schemes to promoteIndustrialization and trade & commerce. Lots of localentrepreneurs are also emerging. On the other hand, It is theduty of the government and the people of North East to createan investment-friendly environment. Extremist activities alongwith sudden bandh culture, Strikes would definitely discouragethe investors and the Entrepreneurs.

BUSINESS POSITIVE, it is our little Endeavour topromote all the positive aspects of the economic activitiesof this Region. If not, at least we would try to be a platformor bridge among the business world, the government andthe common people. We would try our best to encourageand promote the emerging entrepreneurs of this region. Hopewe would get response and co-operation from all the sectionsof our society.

New Banks to CreateHuge Job Opportunities

The Reserve Bank of India’s decision to allow new players inthe banking sector would result into the improvement of

efficiency, increase in capital base to meet the credit needs ofthe economy and generate huge employment opportunities,

says a survey by industry chamber FICCI.

According to the survey whichdrew responses from existing banks,NBFCs, corporate and industrialhouses and other stakeholders, thesetting up of new banks isconsidered significant in view of thefact that only 35% of the country’spopulation has formal bank accountsas compared to an average of 41%in other developing countries.

88% of the respondent feelthat RBI’s condition for an applicantapplying for a license to set up atleast 25% branches in unbankedarea with a population lf less than9,999 will play a significant role inexpansion of banking services andhence help in increasing financialinclusion. Nearly 70% of India’spopulation lives in villages, it said, adding that a vast majority ofapproximately 6.5 lakh villagers donot have a single bank branch thusleaving a huge chunk of ruralpopulation in the hands of moneylenders. The total number ofbranches in India stood at 37,471and the total banking outlets invillages after taking into the accountof the branches, business

correspondents and other modeswas just 1,81,753( as on March,2012), it said.

The survey notes that they canbring it the new processes andtechnology and will play a significantrole in driving competition. First ofall, it will also encourage existingplayers to improve efficiency.Secondly new players with soundfinancial base will bring in muchneeded capital that is required tosupport the credit needs of theeconomy and they will generatehuge employment opportunities, itsaid.69% of the respondents felt thatcorporate or industrial housesshould be given licenses, while theremaining 31% felt that they shouldnot be allowed to operate as a bank.

Irrespective of the fact thatthe new banks will help inconsolidation of the bank sector,58% of the total respondents feltthat new banks should start afreshcompletely while only 42% of therespondents felt that new banksshould acquire existing smallerbanks and grow.

Tea grower Gobin winsthe heart of Canadians

he organic tea produced by Gobin Hazarika, thefamed Meen Mohon tea has attracted the Canadian buyersfor its quality and traditional flavor .Mr Hazarika hadstarted tea cultivation in 1995 on nine bighas of land nearmodhupur village in Lakhimpur. Hazarika is now planningto expand his garden up to 22 bighas in view of the hugedemand in the Canadian market.

But what is the specialty of Meen Mohon tea? Hazarikaexplained that he does not use any fertilizer or machine forproducing the tea. “I crush tea leaves by a traditional woodendevice (Dheki) and dry it in an iron pan under regulatedtemperature, which keepsflavour and nutrientsintact” he revealed.Interestingly, Hazarikachristened the garden afterhis parents - Meen andMohan - who died longback. Hazarika’sobjective today is toestablish his tea in theglobal market. He hasalready ventured into theCanadian market andhis next destination is toenter the Europeanmarket.

Hazarika has been

exporting tea to Canada since 2007. His tea has emergeda leading brand in the Canadian market. “I export nearly25 kg to Canada annually. But demand for my tea hasbeen increasing in Japan also. As my production processis purely traditional, Canadian buyers therefore prefer itas compared to other brands,” he added.

Hazarika has been motivating the small tea growersto switch over to organic format due to high demand inthe global market. Despite high demand, organictea cultivation in the State is still poor. According toavailable information, total organic tea cultivation in the

State stands at 10 lakh kgper annum. Of the 10 lakhkg, nearly 8 lakh kg isexported to overseasmarket and the rest issold in the domesticmarket.

“This is a smallbeginning in my life. I needto work hard to enter theEuropean market. SinceEuropean consumers arevery quality conscious, Ihave to strictly maintainthe quality quotient,” MrHazarika said.

NEEPCOplans to add6,000 MWpower by 2020

The North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has set a target toadd 6,000 MW of power to its generation capacity by next six to seven years totide over the severe power shortage in the Northeastern region. The Corporation isworking on five power projects in the Northeastern region. Out of the five projects, three are hydro while two are gas-based power projects. NEEPCO Chairmancum Managing Director(CMD) PC Pankaj informed this in Agartala.

Besides conventional power project, the NEEPCO would also focus onnon-conventional power sources. “A 5 MW solar power project will be set upat Manarchak power plant where a 101 MW project is scheduled to becommissioned by September next”,. Mr Pankaj Said.

Apart from this, Neepco has already signed an MoU last monthwith Arunachal Pradesh government to install a 3750-MW capacity hydropowerproject, biggest ever in the county, along with a 240-MW capacity plant in Assam,176MW in Mizoram and 85MW in Meghalaya, he said.

With the increasing power demand across the region, Neepco is enhancinggeneration capacity in all its existing thermal power plants by switching over tocombine cycle from open cycle, which will also reduce pollution as well as wastageof energy.Pankaj stressed on starting power generation in gas turbines fromSeptember at the Monarchak gas-based power project provided the ONGCsupplies the necessary gas. Giving details on the 101 MW Manarchak powerproject, Pankaj said the fist phase 61.9 MW unit is scheduled to be commissionedby September if the ONGC ensures gas supply in time.

“We had inked an agreement with the ONGC to supply 0.5 MMSCMDgas daily to run the Manarchak power project. However, the gas pipeline hasnot been completed yet. We do hope, the ONGC will ensure the required gassupply so that the NEEPCO could operate the turbine in time”, Mr. Pankaj said.

According to NEEPCO sources, the project cost of Manarchak hasincreased from Rs 623 crore to Rs 690 crore due to price escalation. TheNEEPCO proposes a power tariff per unit of Rs 3.50.

Pankaj also informed that the NEEPCO has started revival of the Dumburpower project, the State’s lone hydro electric project in Gomati district. Besides, the NEEPCO would increase power generation of Agartala Gas ThermalPower Project at RK Nagar. Currently, the power project is producing 84 MWand the NEEPCO plans to add 51 MW power generations by converting it intoa combined cycle power project.
