  • Bowie County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of

the 2010 census, the population was 92,565. Its legal county seat is Boston, though its courthouse is

located in New Boston. The coun-ty is named for James Bowie, the

legendary knife fighter who died at the Battle of the Alamo.

Bowie County is part of the Texar-kana, TX-AR Metropolitan Statis-

tical Area.Bowie County is one of 46 prohi-bition or entirely dry counties in the state of Texas. However, the community of Texarkana strad-dles the state line with Arkansas, and the Arkansas side is in Miller County which is wet, except for Sundays. State Line Avenue runs directly north and south through Texarkana, literally riding on the state line; thus there are numer-

ous liquor stores on the Arkansas

(east) side of the avenue, and none on the Texas (west) side.

    HistoryNative Americans

The farming Caddoan Mississip-pian culture dates as early as the Late Archaic Period 1500 BCE in Bowie County. The Hernando de Soto expedition of 1541 resulted in violent encounters. Spanish

and French missionaries brought a smallpox, measles malaria

and influenza epidemics against which the Caddo had no immu-nity. Eventually, these issues and problems with the Osage, forced the Caddo to abandon their res-ervations. Settlers had peaceful relations with the 19th Century

Shawnee, Delaware, and Kickapoo in the area.

  • Bnard de La Harpe founded the military fort Le Poste des Ca-dodaquious in 1719 . The fort

remained in continuous use until 1770. The Red River Expedition of 1806 which passed through

    Bowie Coun-ty, headed by Thomas

    Freeman and Dr. Peter

Custis, was of great dip-lomatic and economic

importance to President Thom-as Jefferson. Bowie County was

established in December 1840 and named for James Bowie, reduced to its present size in 1846. DeKalb

was the temporary county seat, with Boston becoming the perma-

nent county seat in 1841.Bowie County in the years leading up to the American Civil War was settled mostly by Southerners who

brought their slave labor system to work the cotton fields. By 1860,

    slaves outnum-bered whites

    2,651 to 2,401. The county

    voted 208-15 in favor of

    secession from the Union.

While Bowie was never a battlefield in

that war, it was nevertheless oc-cupied during

Reconstruction. Between 1860 and 1870 the

population declined. The occupa-tion, and the new legal equality of blacks, became a hostile situation

that fostered Cullen Baker.Cullen Montgomery Baker

    (b. circa 1835 - d. 1869) was a twice-widowed mean-spirited drunk who killed his first man

before he was 20. When Thomas Orr married Bakers late wifes sister, thereby denying Baker

that opportunity, Baker attempt-ed to hang Orr.

Legends abound as to his activities

in both Bowie and Cass coun-ties, including a

rumored tie to the Ku Klux Klan. His

exploits turned him into a folk

hero dubbed The Swamp Fox of the

Sulphur River. He was a Confed-erate States Army

veteran who joined two units, designated as a deserter from the

first, and receiving a disability discharge from the second. Recon-struction enabled him to focus his

anger towards what many at the time believed was a Union intru-sion into their lives. Baker and his gang conducted a vicious rampage

against citizens he perceived as being on the wrong side of the black labor issue, at William G.

Kirkman and the Freedmans Bu-reau in Bowie County, and at the soldiers of the Union occupation. Kirkman unsuccessfully pursued Baker, killing one of Bakers men

in the second attempt. Like Swamp Fox Francis Marion, Baker always managed to elude capture, often

with the help of local citizens. Kirkland was murdered by per-

son or persons unknown, but Baker boasted of having done the deed. In December 1869, Thom-as Orr and a group of neighbors

killed Baker. A local legend has it that the deed was accomplished with strychnine-laced whiskey.

  • When the Texas and Pacific Railway was

constructed through the county, a new town named Texarkana was

founded.Bowie was hit hard by the Great Depression like everywhere else.

Measurable relief came late when the Lone Star

Army Ammunition Plant was established in

1942. The base was active until 2009. The Red River Army Depot, opened in

1941, remains active. The two installations occu-

    pied almost 40,000 acres

(160km2) and provided job opportunities for

thousands.Texarkana is a city in Bowie County, Texas,

United States, located in the Ark-La-Tex region.

    Together with neighbor-ing Texarkana, Arkansas,

it forms the commu-nity of Texarkana. The population of the Texas city was 36,411 at the 2010 census. The city

and its Arkansas coun-terpart form the core

of the Texarkana, Tex-asTexarkana, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area, encompassing all of Bowie County, Tex-as, and Miller County,

Arkansas. The two cities had a combined popula-tion of 66,330 at the 2010

census, and the metro-politan area had a total population of 136,027.Railroads were quick to

see the possibilities of this vast area, and in the late 1850s the builders

of the Cairo and Fulton Railroad were push-ing their line steadily across Arkansas. By

1874, they had crossed the Red River and had reached the Texas state line. Between February 16 and March 19, 1874, trains ran between the

Texas border and the Red River, whence passengers and freight were ferried

to Fulton to continue by rail. The Red River

Bridge opened on March 20, 1874, and since then trains have run directly from Texarkana to St.

Louis. There was keen rivalry between the 1870s rail-road builders. The Texas

and Pacific Railroad reached across Texas to the Arkansas state line.

The border was the logi-cal place for the different railways to connect. On

December 8, 1873, the Texas and Pacific sold

the first town lots for the future city. First to buy

was J.W. Davis, who pur-chased the land where

todays Hotel McCartney now stands, opposite

Union Station. It is not known who gave

Texarkana its name. A popular story credits Colonel Gus Knobel,

who surveyed the Iron Mountain Railroad right-of-way from Little Rock

to this section to the state line. He allegedly painted TEX-ARK-ANA on a plank and nailed it to a tree, saying, This is the name of a town which is

to be built here.Miller County is prob-ably the only county in the United States which

was abolished, only to be reestablished later. Mill-er County was formed in 1820 to honor James Miller who was Arkan-

    sas first governor. Miller

  • County was formed with a large degree of uncer-

tainty as to the location of the line dividing the county and the Mexi-can boundary. Conse-

quently, settlers felt that Arkansas levied and

collected taxes on land which eventually might

be held by Mexico. Moreover, many who resented the oppres-sion of Texans by the

Mexicans were openly declaring allegiance to the Texans. This led to

general unrest, and after the Texas Republic was created, it grew worse. So, in 1838, Governor

James Conway pro-posed that the easiest

and most effective remedy is the abolition

of Miller County to an area which is more

patriotic. From that year until 1874, it was a part

of Lafayette County. Its re-establishment sprung

only from the sale of town lots in Texarkana in 1873. Efforts of the

young town to be incor-porated were not realized

until October 17, 1880, nearly seven years after Texarkana, Texas (June 12, 1874) was formed. December 8, 1873, is

generally recognized by both cities as the date of

    organization.

Changing vehicle oil on a regular basis is an extreme-ly important task which of-fers a number of benefits to vehicle owners. Oil plays an extremely important role of providing lubrication in the engine. Apart from lu-bricating engine parts, the oil also performs other im-portant roles like cleaning of engine, reducing pollut-ants, stopping the forma-tion of sludge and cooling the vehicle. But, if it is not changed on a regular basis, it can result in engine fail-ure and engine wear and tear thus causing huge loss in terms of vehicle perfor-mance. Some of the ma-jor benefits offered by oil change include improved gas mileage, improved en-

gine stability and life, in-creased performance etc. All the benefits have been discussed below in detail. Improvement in gas mile-age This is one of the major benefits offered by routine oil change. If the engine oil is not changed from a long time, it becomes less viscous and starts losing its ability to lubricate and protect elements of engine. As a result, friction occurs between moving parts of the engine thus causing wear and tear. The more will be the friction, the more the engine needs to work in order to overcome that friction. On the other hand, new oil is extremely viscous, smooth and allows engine to move smoothly

with smallest friction. Im-proves engine stability and life This is another import-ant benefit offered by reg-ular oil change to vehicle owners. It improves the life of the engine thus making it functional for years to come. Oil change on a regu-lar basis keeps engine clean. Clean engine shows less signs of ageing and offers an excellent performance for a longer time period. In-creased performance We all know that performance of a vehicle majorly depends on the condition of the engine. If it is good, performance increases. Stops noise pro-

duced by vehicleRegular changes of engine oil also prevent the parts of an engine from coming into

contact with each other. This helps in reducing the noise made by the vehicle. Moreover, it also reduces the temperature of the en-gine.Thus, it becomes clear that regular oil change of-fers a number of advantages to vehicle owners. Getting oil change performed by an auto service centre is a good decision. There are many auto service centers offer-ing such services to vehicle owners. One needs to do a deep research in order to find a reliable service center which uses quality products and motor oil. Individuals can take help from internet

    in this regard.

    Moving Tips

  • 1. Regular physical activity lowers your risk of contracting heart

disease, type II diabetes and both colon and breast cancers.

    2. People who have a regular exercise routine in place are also more successful in other areas of their lives than those who live a

inactive lifestyle. Numerous studies have proven that exercise makes

you more alert and receptive, two characteristics which can help you in every element of your daily life.

    3. There are benefits of exercise for children because it becomes an

enjoyable and addictive behavior. Research has shown that physically active youngsters usually become

physically active adults that live longer than their non-exercising

    peers.

    4. Exercising on a regular basis immediately raises your

metabolism. This helps you lose unnecessary weight on your body in the form of fat, and also allows

you eat more without gaining weight. And unlike diet pills, regular

exercise for weight loss has no adverse side effects, other than

possible injury, and contributes to total body health.

    5. The stronger you are, the more you can do. And while not everyone wants to be a bodybuilder, physical

activity does improve your muscular fitness. Muscles burn more energy

than fat, and this helps you maintain a consistent and healthy

    body weight.

    6. Are you aware that one of the mental benefits of exercise is that

it really helps improve your mood? Research conducted by industry recognized organizations show that fitness minded people who

frequently work out, jog or simply just walk have lower levels of stress,

    anxiety and depression.

    7. Physical activity has even been shown to enhance brain

functionality in older adults. One study showed that elderly people

on a treadmill program found they were able to resolve bothersome problems and remember events

they had previously forgotten. This is because of the increased oxygen levels delivered to the brain when

    you exercise.

    Work Out Tips

  • While you t ry to obtain an on SBA

business loan there are cer tain re-

quirements that need to be fulf i l led.

Let us have a look at them below:

The f i rst requirement is to provide a

detailed prof ile of the business that

you are cur rently running. This will

include detail ing of the business

type that you are running. You will

also need to provide the t ime l im-

it f rom when you are running this

    business. Also, any information re-

garding the overall sales, prof it and

loss repor ts will also need to be dis-

cussed. Finally, the total number of

people working under you needs to

be mentioned along with the area of

locat ion of the venture. Apar t f rom

    providing this information, you will

also be asked to provide all the busi-

ness operat ion related news. The

next requirement is the process to

select the cor rect SBA loan that will

best meet your purpose. You will

need to discuss the amount you feel

is necessary for your venture and

    then specifying the detailed infor-

mation about how you will use these

funds for your business. One thing

should be kept in mind: Always read

carefully al l the schemes and plans

    available before applying. You need

to ensure that you are choosing the

best scheme to meet your needs and

    requirements. Unless you undergo

the cor rect select ion and applica-

t ion procedure, you will f ind that

you have achieved nothing as your

applicat ion will be ruled out.

The next step of the applicat ion

process is ext remely crucial. It is

related with al l the f inancial state-

    ments regarding your business ven-

ture status. However, this scenar io

is common to every loan package

that you will obtain f rom anywhere.

All the f inancial statements are re-

quired to be submit ted per taining to

the last th ree years and also of the

    present year.

Not only the f inancial statements

but also cer tain other f inancial cal-

culat ive sheets need to be included.

    The account payables, receivables

and the t ransact ions related to cash

f low are also required to be shown.

The major advantage in this cr ite-

r ion is that suitable proof can be

    provided th rough some statements

of cash f low on monthly basis to

highlight the fact that you can repay

the loan amount without any sor t of

    t rouble or diff iculty.

  • Environmentally Friendly Ways of Reusing and Recycling Paper, Books and Mags by: Reuben Frye

As consumers de-mand the need for more paper, whether its for news-papers, plain paper or books, we continue to cut down vast numbers of really old trees. It will take numerous years to see this turned over. Reusing and recycling paper is really important nowadays.

All paper, including books and magazines, are virtually wholly bio-degradable, meaning they dont clog landfills for many years and will merely degrade into nothing. The fact that there is a need for more paper makes it appear daft not to recycle as much as we possibly can. That is why we should reuse and recycle.

    The traditional means

of recycling paper is by making use of re-cycling facilities. You will observe that where you dwell, there are op-portunities to recycle, including in numerous cases your local grocery store. You may notice that your local area has different bins so you can

sort your paper for recy-cling. So that the paper can be usable once again, the recycling process should be put in place. This saves the trees and makes for a healthy envi-ronment. Paper recycling is not always straightfor-ward and can be made challenging by the sta-pling of books and mags.

Magnets may be utilized to handle the problems of metal and recycling companies are constantly try to find ways to better the process.

Mags and books can be reused, it is only a mat-ter of using our imagi-nation. Those old books and magazines are a fan-tastic learning resource for your kids and they will have the chance to give them to other peo-ple in the future. An old book will be of use to somebody else and it is not hard for us give it this way.

There are always plac-es like libraries that are happy to take your old books from you. Some libraries will take dona-tions of old books and even magazines, pro-viding they are in good

  • condition. The library and the public will be more glad since they will have more reading choices. So instead of merely tossing a book or leaving it to collect dust, think about giving it to a library.

Books can also be sold instead of given away either locally or online. EBay and Amazon are popular places online where you can try sell-ing your old books.

To sum it up, paper is being utilized more and more but fewer trees. Beasts use trees as a

natural home ground and they are essential for the wellbeing of the environment. There are plenty of choices for us to recycle paper and to ensure that books and

magazines are reused instead of thrown away.

  • Tankless Water Heaters- Tankless Water heater repair and installation for your home by: Trish

We all know hot water is very much a necessi-ty. Most of us have wa-ter heaters at home and do not give it a second

thought, we just assume we will have hot water on a daily basis until you are

standing in the shower and the water goes cold because someone in the other part of the house decides to turn on the water, trying to get the

dishes done after dinner and no hot water or we get ready for that therapeutic evening bubble bath so we can unwind or that morn-ing shower to get us going and there is no hot water. If this sounds familiar it may be time to consider that tankless hot water

    tank.

Let s discuss the advantage s of replacing your old hot water tank with a Tankless

water heater. Have you found yourself scratch-ing your head when the electric bill comes, most

of us have. Depending on your household size and

use, your conventional hot water tank can even drive your electric bills through

    the roof.

Did you know that most conventional heaters make up for almost 20% of your

household energy con-sumption. Think about this for a moment 20% is a lot of consumption

when you begin thinking about the different house-hold items that make up your electric bill clothes

dryers, stoves, heat, wash-ing machines, lights, hair dryers and the list goes on. So when you think

about it on this level 20% for the use of hot water is quit a bit of your electric

bill. This is why if you are a conservative or a home owner that simply wants to save money and enjoy effective water heating consider switching to

different system. It may be time for to try using a

    tankless water heater.

With electric bills soar-ing and people becoming more eco- friendly there

are many people now considering having a tank-less water system. Do you believe a tankless hot wa-ter system is right for your home? There is no reason why it should not be. The reasons for having a tank-

less verses not having a tankless system certainly outweighs the disadvan-

    tages.

Lets review some of the reasons why installing a tankless heater could be

  • very beneficial:

Tankless hot water heaters are energy efficient. You can cut your heating cost to up to 30%. Now think

about this for a moment If your hot water is costing you up to 20% on a con-ventional hot water tank

and your saving up to 30% on a tankless hot water

system and the tankless is also eco -friendly well, this

    sounds pretty beneficial.

Water Heaters work dif-ferently from the conven-tional water heaters. With a Tankless water system the water is heated only

when it is needed. When you turn on the faucet that is when the Tankless heat-ing system kicks in and at the same time the water

is heated (using a heating element). That is why a

Tankless hot water system is also called Instanta-

    neous or Demand.

With tankless water heat-ers there is constant flow

of hot water, so this allows everyone in your home to have hot water at the same

time, wow .no more be-ing deprived of hot water in your home. It does not

matter whether two or more faucets are running at the same time. But keep in mind speak to your pro-fessional plumber so they can advise you on what you may need as far as a

whole house type of heater or what your options are by installing two or more

of this type system to meet instantaneous hot water

    demand.

You should know tank-less water heaters are safer because the system does not store water that can

be a breeding ground for bacteria such as Legionel-la. Keeping the water tem-perature at an appropriate temperature is important to keep these type of bac-

    teria s from thriving.

Preventive maintenance is still periodic same as a conventional heater but

the cost is lesser. The next great advantage of a Tank-ess water system if you do

what the manufacturer requires, it can last up to

20 years and still maintain its efficiency.
