History

First the pioneers settled down to exploit naturalresources, especially the Araucária. In this context, thecolonizing companies were very important, encouraged by thestate to effectively occupy the region. The wood removed fromforests was transported on rafts, in the flood season of the RiverUruguay, to Argentina, where it was sold. This fact has attractedsettlers from Rio Grande do Sul, who founded "Xapeco" in 1917.By 1940, began the large flows of immigrants, from Rio Grandedo Sul, of German, Italian and Polish. These settlers and theirdescendants would be responsible for characterization ofEuropean culture and architecture currently present inChapecó. The agricultural industry has developed, determiningthe vocation of the city, which has become internationallyrecognized as a major producer of poultry and swine.
