I. Overview and Purpose

A. Overview The Océ BLM550+ Booklet Maker developed by Watkiss Automation Ltd. is a compact all-in-one booklet making system for the VarioPrint 6000+ Series devices. This booklet maker combines stitching, folding, spine forming and trimming to produce booklets of up to 208 pages (@ 80 g/m² plain paper) with a square spine. It features fully automatic settings for different booklet sizes, and includes variable stitch leg length for varying booklet thickness. The optional Book Stacker is a high capacity vertical booklet stacking system. The book stacker has a stacking capacity of up to 36.6” (930 mm). The solution allows the VarioPrint 6000+ production printers to create a full bleed printing and booklet making solution for a wide range of on-demand applications.

B. Purpose The purpose of this document is to provide the servicing dealer with the tools necessary to enable a successful integration of VarioPrint 6000+ production print devices with the BLM550+ Booklet Maker and available options. This integration expands the market potential for the VarioPrint 6000+ production print devices. This document has been created to assist servicing dealers to realize that potential. Training and support for the BLM550+ and available options described in this guide are available from Canon U.S.A., Inc.’s (hereinafter referred to as (“Canon USA”)).

II. Features

A. BLM550+ Booklet Maker The Océ BLM550+ Booklet Maker solution has the following features:

• Makes books from 4 pages up to 208 pages (10.4 mm) • Saddle stitching from 1 up to 6 stitches • Fully automatic settings • Memory for up to 24 jobs • Supported sheet sizes

• Minimum: 8” x 8” (203 mm x 203 mm) • Maximum with the Standard PIM: 12.6” x 19.2” (320 mm x 488 mm) • Maximum with the Paper Input Module Optional A1 (350 x 500 support):

13.78” x 19.7” (350 mm x 500 mm)

• Supported paper weight:

B. Book Stacker The optional Book Stacker has the following features:

• Stacking capacity of up to 36.6” (930 mm). This is approximately:

• 400 booklets of 10 sheets/40 pages (2 mm thick spine) • 175 booklets of 25 sheets/100 pages (5 mm thick spine) • 80 booklets of 50 sheets/200 pages (10 mm thick spine)

• Accepts books of different thicknesses and sizes without the need to unload booklets until the stacker is full.

• Supported book sizes:

• Spine length: minimum 8.0” (203 mm), maximum 19.2” (320 mm) • Book width: minimum 3.15” (80 mm), maximum 9.6” (244 mm) • Book thickness: minimum 8 page booklet (dependent on media),

maximum 200 page booklet (10 mm) Note: The BLM550 and BLM500 require an upgrade kit to connect Book Stacker.

C. Watkiss P2T 2-Knife Trimmer The optional 2-Knife Trimmer has the following features:

• Adjustable top and bottom side trimming of booklets (up to 200 pages, 80 g/m2).

• Trim up to 1.57” (40 mm) each from the top and bottom side of the booklet (up to 3.15” (80 mm) total).

• The operator can configure the trim position so that it can be offset from the center-line to match the image position.

Note: The BLM550 and BLM500 require an upgrade kit to connect the Watkiss P2T 2-Knife Trimmer.

IV. Dealer Sales/Service Authorization To become authorized and maintain authorization to sell and service the BLM 550+ Booklet Maker, each authorized VarioPrint 6000+ dealer location must have at least two (2) technicians who have successfully completed and received certification on the following:

• VarioPrint 6XX0Ultra/TP/MICR Training Program • BLM500/550/550+ Training Program (New Technicians) • BLM550+ Update Online Training (for service technicians that completed the

Finishing Equipment (BLM500/550-Watkiss) Training) By meeting this combination of requirements, a dealer can be confident that their service department will have the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in servicing and supporting this production product.

V. Educational Training

A. Training Program Overview

1. Learning Path for New Service Technicians The learning path for a new Technician is a comprehensive blended learning program, which will prepare the new service technician to setup and service the BLM550+. The online course module, available on Canon USA’s e-Support Center Web Site (http://www.support.cusa.canon.com), provides technicians with the theoretical concepts to install, configure, and support the BLM550+ Booklet Maker. The 5-day Hardware classroom courses blends the information taught online with hands-on, practical training in the classroom and lab.

B. Watkiss P2T 2-Knife Trimmer for BLM550+ Training Course To service the optional Watkiss P2T 2-Knife Trimmer for the BLM550+ Booklet Maker, service technicians must complete the Watkiss P2T 2-Knife Trimmer for the BLM550+ comprehensive blended learning program. The online course module, available on Canon USA’s e-Support Center Web Site. The 3-day Hardware classroom courses blends the information taught online with hands-on, practical training in the classroom and lab. The training for the Watkiss P2T 2-Knife Trimmer is a fee based course. To order from Canon Network Access use item code 2115V542. The course fee is $742.50.

C. Prerequisites Service technicians must successfully complete the VarioPrint 6XX0Ultra/TP/MICR Training Program.

D. Certification • BLM 550+ Booklet Maker Technician certification is required for authorization to sell these products and to receive support.

E. Who Should Attend It is highly recommended that any technician responsible for installing, servicing, or supporting the BLM 550+ Booklet Maker complete the Training Course. Note: Our current support policy dictates that only those technicians who have completed the training program and pass the final assessment exam are entitled to live, phone-based support through our TSC (Technical Support Center). However, self-service support (software downloads, knowledgebase articles, support forums, technical publications) is available through our e-Support Center Web Site for all technicians. (Refer to the Technical Support section on the e-Support Center Web Site for entitlement details.)






F. Training Facilities

1. Online Course Training Facilities The online courses are located within the eLearning center on Canon USA’s e-Support Center Web Site. The eLearning center includes Certification maps that provide easy access to the training. The online courses can be conducted at any dealer facility that is suitable for online student learning.

2. Classroom Training Facilities Classroom training is available in the Itasca, Illinois Canon Regional Training Centers.

VI. Servicing Notes

A. Power and Plug Requirements Canon USA strongly suggests dedicated and properly grounded outlets be provided for the BLM550+ Booklet Makers. The BLM550+ Booklet Maker requires a dedicated NEMA 6-20 receptacle for proper operation

IMPORTANT

• We recommend an additional standard 120 V/15 A outlet for service tools, such as a laptop computer or vacuum that may be used when servicing or configuring the machine.

• Use only dedicated and properly grounded outlets for the BLM550+ Booklet Maker and accessories. Do not use extension cords. The ground connection serves to provide the internal electronics with a reference voltage. Faulty or poor ground sources will cause this reference voltage to fall into a range that no longer serves as a reliable reference voltage. A qualified electrician can measure and provide the ground source that the BLM550+ Booklet Maker or any computer controlled office equipment requires.

• Before installation, confirm that all necessary receptacles are available. • Phase converters and step-down transformers are not supported.

C. Installation Space Requirements The BLM550+ Booklet Maker approximate installation space requirements may differ, depending on how the machine is configured and the optional modules attached. Always ensure that there is enough space for service and operation of the device. The Installation space for the BLM550+ Booklet Maker adds to the VarioPrint 6000+ Series device installation space when configured with the High Capacity Stacker.

IMPORTANT

• In addition to the space required by the VarioPrint6000+ Series the following space requirements are necessary for the proper servicing of the equipment (with all doors and access panels open).:

• The BLM550+ Booklet Maker (including the connecting bridge) requires approximately 87.8” x 112.6” (2,230 mm x 2,860 mm) of space

• The BLM550+ Booklet Maker (including the connecting bridge), connected with the Book Stacker requires approximately 91.3” x 129.5” (2,320 mm x 3,290 mm) of space

• The BLM550+ Booklet Maker (including the connecting bridge), connected with the Book Stacker and Watkiss P2T 2-Knife Trimmer requires approximately 107” x 153.5” (2,700 mm x 3,900 mm) of space

• As indicated in Figure 1, for the proper servicing of the equipment (with all doors and access panels open) make sure to keep the back of the BLM550+ Booklet Maker at least 23.6” (600 mm) away from a wall and keep the sides at least 21.7” (550 mm) away from a wall.

• The machine should not be moved once it is in place. • The floor must be level (with no bows) and flat for the stabilization and

support of the machine. • Do not place anything around the machine. Especially, do not place

anything around the breaker, as doing so may prevent access to the breaker in an emergency, possibly resulting in personal injury.

D. Estimated Installation Times The estimated Installation times below are the estimated times required for installation of the BLM550+ Booklet Maker (including the connecting bridge) starting from an unpacked condition. The estimated installation times can be achieved only with a minimum of two (2) experienced technicians on the BLM550+ Booklet Maker. Actual work times may differ from the estimated times shown in the table below.

E. Environmental Requirements When installing the BLM550+ Booklet Maker and accessories, the environmental conditions of the room where the machine is located should be as described in the table below.

Notes:

• In certain areas of the country and during certain times of the year, it may be necessary to use a humidifier or dehumidifier to attain the proper humidity levels for optimal machine performance. There is a risk that productivity and paper feeding may be affected if the machine is operated outside of these guidelines.

• The machine should not be installed in locations with significant shifts in temperature or humidity. Areas containing water, or equipment that can significantly alter room temperature or humidity, such as a heater, stove, or portable air conditioner, should be avoided, unless proper environmental control is available to achieve maximum productivity or quality capability.

G. Operator Maintenance Periodic operator maintenance is required to ensure a specific level of machine performance. The following tasks should be conducted by the customer operator(s).

Table 19 – BLM550+ Operator Maintenance

Weekly Clean the stitcher head (surface only) (Tools to perform this maintenance are included with the BLM550+).

Either of the following: • Monthly • When a new stich wire is installed • When the message “OPERATOR

MAINTENANCE”10 is displayed on the screen (approximately every 20,000 stitches).

• Lubricate the stitch head (Note: this should be performed even when the machine is not in use)

• Lubricate the stitch head • Clean the square spine forming clamp to

prevent stripes appearing on the side of the booklet spine

• Clean the square spine form roller to prevent lines appearing on the booklet spine

• Clean trimming removals fingers • Clean excess grease from the stitch

head

10 The “OPERATOR MAINTENANCE” message appears after 20,000 stitches and is accompanied by a repeated beeping from the machine. After another 2,000 stitches the machine locks. Operator Maintenance (including the lubrication and cleaning) will reset the counter and resume machine operation.



VII. Suggested End-User Customer Service Offerings

A. End-User Limited Warranty Conditions Ninety (90) days after delivery to the original purchaser. This warranty covers the BLM550+, Conveyor Bridge, Stacker and Book Stacker.

B. Service Parts Availability Service parts ordering will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to provide the quickest possible response should the need arise for such parts. Canon USA will provide service parts for the key units, assemblies and consumables to cover the entire machine function, and this is designed to avoid potential machine downtime for the customer. Various shipment options 11 currently offered include:

• Next Flight Out (NFO) • UPS (Ground, Next Day, Early AM) • Pickup (Rush, Spot)

VIII. Product Technical Support Offerings

A. Dealer Support Requirements Technical Training is required to receive technical support for the BLM550+ Booklet Maker. Refer to the Canon USA Technical Support Center section (Page 19) for further details. In order to ensure that each Dealer receives the highest level of support and in turn resolve the end user’s problems quickly and accurately, here are several recommendations to maximize your technical support request.

• The dealer support personnel should check technical documentation (Manuals, Tech. Pub’s, etc.) and the e-Support Center Web Site (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) before calling Canon USA’s Technical Support Center (TSC) since your concern may have already been addressed and documented.

• Have your Support ID Number ready when you call the TSC and prepare to be at the location where the engine or application is accessible. This dramatically improves the TSC’s ability to help troubleshoot the problem and eliminate the guesswork when answering a specific question. There are many “causes” to various problems, but by being at the location when calling, it takes the speculation out of the troubleshooting process by supplying accurate answers to what the device/application is doing.

• Provide the serial number of the installed engine or application you are troubleshooting. While this is required for access to support, it will also provide the specialist with information about previous calls for support.

• Be prepared to provide environment specific information and any other site-specific variables.

• Submit and update your profile information such as cell phone number, e-mail address, or company address. To do so, you can logon to the e-Support Center Web Site and access the “Current Profile” section to make updates or call Canon USA’s TSC. Accurate profile information will allow for quick contact if more information is required from the caller later on.

• A return call from a dealer technician/systems engineer with a resolution is extremely helpful. The information Canon USA receives from you on what actually resolved the problem is sent to the Support Specialist and enables them to better assist other callers who may have the same problem just addressed.






B. Canon USA Support Offerings The following support mechanisms were established to deliver high quality, timely technical support services, and product information to the BLM550+ Booklet Maker dealerships. These support services cover areas such as system and user software, networking and connectivity issues, electro-mechanical operations, and other hardware servicing.

1. Canon USA Technical Support Center Canon USA provides a time sensitive call escalation process for all authorized BLM550+ Booklet Maker dealers. The TSC is the single point of entry for this process. Hours of Operation for live nationwide toll free support are Monday – Friday 9:00am to 6:00pm Eastern Time. Once a call is placed to the TSC and information is logged into the call management system, a case number will be assigned to the call. Every effort is made to resolve the problem during the call. Calls to the TSC that cannot be resolved during the initial call and require escalation will follow the process in Table 21 below. The status of all escalated cases can be viewed via the e-Support Center Web Site or by calling the TSC. Canon USA’s TSC support responsibilities are as follows:

• All technical support for the end-user is provided solely by the contracted servicing Dealer.

• The Canon USA TSC will be the central contact/escalation for the reporting of all known outstanding hardware and software issues to Canon USA’s engineering and development groups.

• The Canon USA TSC will be available to all authorized dealers, and technicians who have successfully completed the Training Program.

• The TSC will provide technical information regarding all Canon associated hardware and software products.

• The TSC will deploy, as required through proper escalation procedures, all on-site Canon USA Digital Solutions Specialist and Systems Engineers.

Canon USA’s Engineering Services and Solutions Division provides high quality e-Support via the Internet and is only available for Canon USA authorized servicing dealers. Canon USA’s e-Support Center Web Site is designed to provide dealer Systems Engineers and Technicians access to technical support information via the Worldwide Web. The following functions and information can be accessed:

• Proactive notification of new releases, patches, Technical Publications, and other information via e-mail

• Search for Technical Solutions with the Integrated Knowledge Management System through natural language query

• Read or download on-line documentation • Download patches and their Readme files • Download Firmware and Software Drivers • Track and Modify logged Cases • Review all open Cases In order to access the e-Support Center Web Site, you must first register for a Support ID. To register for a Support ID, go on-line to the Canon USA Engineering Services and Solutions Division’s e-Support Center Web Site.
