[-,BAD AZIDE

Lead azide is a powerful primary explosive that is wen

suited for improvised detonators because it is relativelyeas .. to make and is the second most effective initiatingexplosive for improvisation (next to DDNP) Sec. t. No. 19.~.However, lead azide is not very flame-sensitive, especiallywhen compressed. Therefore, it is necessary to add to thelead azide a small amount (a Vs to 1/16-ulc}1Iayer) of anotherIlame-sensitive primary explosive or sugar-chlorate igrlitermix to insure ignitiotl.

b. Add an equal volume of acetone.c. Heat on high heat until the petroleum jelly has

melted.d. Add the hot mix to the potassium chlorate.

e. Knead well.f. Let the rest of the acetone evaporate off.

3. ,\0 alternative to petroleum jelly that works equallywell, if not better .. is castor oil. Use the system outlined

in comment 2~4. Let us stress that the potassium chlorate must be theconsistency of flour - otherwise, the plastic will not bea plastic and might not detonate.5. To make a C4~like plastic explosive, simply mix a littlemore than 9 parts RDX and a little less than 1 art petro ...leurn jelly or castor oil using the process described above.

This will increasethe power of the explosive considerably, but more impor ..tantly, i t wil l sensitize it more than any other compound. This does not mean you shouldn It use a compound de-tonator; it simply means that it will be detonated a higherpercentage of times.3~ See comments, Sec, L No.8; for AI\! purificauon.
