Design Project:
Outline
INTRODUCTIONBiodegradable materials are objects or substances that may be decomposed by the environment or by organisms.
ACTIVITY 1 COMPARING PACKING
MATERIALS
Part A: Result: white peanut dissolved first.
•Objective : Comparing different packing materials
Part B:
Result: both eggs were broken at nearly the same height.
ACTIVITY2HUNTING FOR BIODEGRADABLE
MATERIALS. Biodegradable materials: are substances or
objects that degrade into smaller nontoxic parts that are returned to environment or organisms.
Examples;
Banana peel Papers
wood Non-biodegradable substance that cannot
break down. Examples;
plastics metal glass
PROCESSING BIODEGRADABLE MATERIALS AND COMPARING THEIR
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES.
ACTIVITY3
Preparing gelatin films We prepared gelatin
films with different concentrations. We found that the strength of the film increases as the concentration increases.
Testing mechanical properties
We tested the mechanical properties of the gelatin films

DESIGN PROJECT: DESIGNING A MEDICINE-RELEASE CAPSULE
ObjectiveSimulation of drug release & capsule degradation that happen in human body
We added sodium alginate to calcium chloride to get Alginate beads “natural polymer”
Design Project: Designing a medicine-release capsule
1-We made the alginate beads which represents the drugs’ capsules
2- adding food coloring, which represents the drug, it will be absorbed by the capsules .
3- Extra dye will be removed from the beads
4- Finally we dropped the beads inside sodium citrate solution which represent the human blood to see the dye diffusion.
WE LEARNED THAT DRUG CAPSULES CAN SAFELY DEGRADE IN HUMAN BODY AFTER MEDICINE DIFFUSION
Problem and project idea: While most groups were focused on land pollution, we were more concerned about our aquatic environment which surroundsmost of our beloved country.
Firstly, we asked ourselves “what is the problem with our aquatic environment which could be solved using biodegradable material?”. After a lot of thorough researching and asking professionals specialized people in the ministry of environment, we recognized one of the biggest causes of sea water pollution.
• Aim: To protect the marine environmentand save the fish.
Some fishermen forget where they put the gargoors or fishnet, causing the fish to be captured and Trapped for a long time. The fish will die, nets still there that cause the cycle continues. This will affect the fish wealth. All this dead fish will cause several other severe problems, such as increase the bacteria which causes a decrease in the level of oxygen in water. This will lead to the death of other marine creatures. being a huge cause of pollution.
Gargoors & Fishnet
WE TRIED TO CREATE A SOLUTION. IF WE USE A BIODEGRADABLE MATERIAL WHICH CAN DEGRADE QUICKLY THE FISH WILL SURVIVE AND OUR ENVIRONMENT WILL BE SAFE
ACKNOWLEDGMENTWe thank our teachers that have helped us in this project. As well, we certainly thank our school’s administration for giving us the opportunity to participate in this competition. We finally thank Qatar University, the sponsors and Al Bairaq team who gave us this great opportunity.
