What is the church, who is the church & what is the role of the church? The word church in the NT comes from The Greek word (ek-klay-see'-ah)The transliteration is spelled ekklsaPronounced as ek-klay-see'-ah

TheExpositor.tv66Thayer's Definition of the Church

A gathering of citizens, called out from their homes into some public placeAn assembly of the people convened at the public place of the council for the purpose of deliberatingAny gathering or throng of men assembled by chance, tumultuously in a Christian senseAn assembly of Christians gathered for worship in a religious meetingThose who anywhere, in a city, village, constitute such a company, and are united into one bodyThe whole body of Christians scattered throughout the earthThe assembly of faithful Christians already dead, and received into heaven

TheExpositor.tv8The ChurchThe Biblical church is not the building, it is the body of believers Nowhere in the Scriptures are Christians told to wait once a year, to bring an unbeliever to a crusade. But the Scriptures do tell us to bring the crusade to them. Therefore, it is the Biblical duty and calling of Christians (the church,) to go out into the world. To be salt of the earth, and light of the world. The church is to go outside the fours walls of that building, that most call the churchThe Lords Great Commission is Matthew 28:18-20. And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.TheExpositor.tv9TheExpositor.tv10The Evangelist10The Evangelist

The word evangelist comes from the Greek word The transliteration is spelled euangelistsIt is pronounced as yoo-ang-ghel-is-taceIt is a noun

TheExpositor.tv11The Evangelist

Thayer's Definition is ~A bringer of good tidingsThe name given to the NT heralds of salvation through Christ who are not apostlesStrongs #2099 A preacher of the Gospel is an evangelist

TheExpositor.tv12The EvangelistIt is also a derivative from ~ The Greek word The transliteration is spelled euangelz It is pronounced as yoo-ang-ghel-id'-zoIt is a verb!

TheExpositor.tv13The Evangelist Thayer's Definition is ~To bring good newsTo announce or proclaim glad tidingsIts used in the O.T. for any kind of good newsIts used in the N.T. especially of the glad tidings of the coming kingdom of God, and of the salvation to be obtained in it through Christ, and of what relates to this salvationTo instruct (people) concerning the things that pertain to Christian salvation

TheExpositor.tv15The Evangelist

Evangelism is not a gift, it is a commandment Some within the church believe that only some are called to evangelizeThey gleam that from Eph 4:11, And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, Many Christians believe that vs 11 is speaking specifically of spiritual gifts only, and only for some (as does 1st Cor 12:4 & Rom 12:6)But Paul here is addressing the churches positions or office of evangelism and unity of the body of Christ. The next verse better explains In context vs 12 makes it clear that vs 11 is for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, and for the edifying of the body of Christ,That is what we are doing today. Training, equipping, and edifying, for the work of the ministry.TheExpositor.tv16The EvangelistIn other wordsToday Christians are trained up and equipped by pastors, teachers, and evangelists (or the office of evangelism)Not everyone has the specific office or title of evangelist, but were all called to evangelizeAll Christians are to do the work of an evangelist, but not all Christians are evangelistsAn evangelist possesses a unique ability, to present the Gospel effectively to unbelievers (but all Christians are called to evangelize)An evangelist possesses a unique ability to train other believers in evangelism, with the common goal of implementing the Great Commission As Warren Wiersbe said, Evangelism is not a toy to play with. Its a tool to build with.TheExpositor.tv17TheExpositor.tv18Boldness, courage & confidence Boldness, courage, or confidence

Where does it come from? Not of ourselves. It all comes from the Lord.It comes from that 3-D relationship (upward, inward, then outward)Paul said in 2 Tim 1:7, For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.Paul said Eph 6:19-20, , and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

TheExpositor.tv19Boldness, courage, or confidenceJoshua 1:9 says, Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. Duet 31:6 says, Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.

TheExpositor.tv20Boldness, courage, or confidenceRegarding our confidencePaul said in 2 Cor 3: 4-6 says, And we have such trust through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.Jer 17: 7 says, "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose trust is the LORD.Psalms 118:18 says, It isbetter to trust in theLord,Than to put confidence in man.

TheExpositor.tv21TheExpositor.tv22What does the Bible say about public preaching?

The Bible on public preachingIt says in Rom 10:14-16, How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our report? So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

TheExpositor.tv23The Bible on public preachingActs 1:4-8 says, And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, which, He said, you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? And He said to them, It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Notice their progression from Jerusalem, then to Judea, then to Samaria, and then to the other ends of the earth? This city is our Jerusalem (The church within America is backwards. Theyve forsaken their own backyard)TheExpositor.tv24The Bible on public preachingLets look at 1st Tim 4:11-13Paul told the church in vs 11-13, These things command and teach. Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.Lets zoom-in on verse 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Take note of those three commands, reading, exhortation, and to doctrine. In vs 13b, The word reading comes from the Greek word (anagnsis), which also means the act of the public reading of Scripture. This word reading (anagnsis) is used three times in the N.T. Here in 1st Tim 4:13, in Acts 13:15, and in 2nd Cor. 3:14. Therefore open-air preachers play a significant role in verse 13b - the public reading of the Scriptures. A local church that does not obey all three commands, is not a Biblical church.

TheExpositor.tv26TheExpositor.tv27MethodologiesDifferent styles & methodologies

Distribution of Gospel tracts (personal hand to hand preferred)Using signageOne on one conversations (Gospel centered)Apologetics (Gospel centered)The Are you a good person test (Use as supplemental only. Its not evangelism, if not used with Scriptures)On the box preaching (Re teaching, only if you have the gift of teaching. Remember a preacher is often a teacher.)On the box preaching may also include rebuking 2 Tim. 4:2 & Prov 24:25, and Biblical judging John 7:24.On the box crying out & calling out (aka a crier)If someone is on the box preaching, be respectful and use wisdom when engaging in conversations with others while the preaching is going on (except for dealing with a Heckler)TheExpositor.tv28Different styles & methodologies

Contact evangelism versus friendship evangelismContact evangelism (proclaiming the Gospel to strangers, and/or confronting the public with the Gospel.)Friendship evangelism (sharing the Gospel only after making friends, or only in mutual conversation with strangers.)In the book of Acts, theres at least 46 instances of the early church engaging in evangelism (both contact and friendship)Of these 46 instances, 38 of them were contact evangelism Only 8 were friendship evangelism

TheExpositor.tv29Contact evangelism is more BiblicalTheExpositor.tv30Source: The book Evangelism in the New Testament, by Jon SpeedDifferent styles & methodologiesPoints to ponder onA Biblical Evangelist, must be evangelicalA Christian, bust be Christ-centricA herald, or preacher (aka a proclaimer of the Gospel,) will be Gospel-centricWhat I do strive to accomplish, is to use Gods Word more than mine. Because Gods Word never goes void. The power onto Salvation is in the Gospel, not in my words (Isaiah 55:11, Rom 1:16.) Many other methodologies (or ministries) are not Gospel-centric, they're man-centric. TheExpositor.tv31Different styles & methodologies

TheExpositor.tv32Nowhere in the Scriptures are evangelists (or street preachers) told to first get the worlds permission to preach. Nowhere in the Scriptures are Christians told to accommodate the world. Nowhere in the Scriptures are we told to only preach to crowds that are willing to listen. Nowhere in the Scriptures are we told to redact, truncate, or replace the preaching of the glorious Gospel with tricks, gimmicks, gadgets, skits, magic, entertainment, cash giveaways, trivia questions, word games, jokes, or comedy. Nowhere in the Scriptures are we told do give the heckler a microphone and a box to stand on, so they can blaspheme the Lord and use profanity. We ought to be thankful that these evangelists are out there, but when our evangelism efforts become more man-centric, and less Gospel-centric; its no longer orthodoxBiblical evangelism. ~ IPOC MinistriesTheExpositor.tv33Break Time

TheExpositor.tv34Dealing with Hecklers (Scoffers)

Dealing with Hecklers A Heckler (or Scoffer) is a person that interrupts and mocks the OAPs sermon (often times using profanities which could lead to violence)2 Peter 3:3-4 says, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will comein the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, Where is the promise ofhis coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.

TheExpositor.tv35Dealing with Hecklers Some OAPs prefer hecklers, because they can draw crowds. Others do not prefer hecklersEither way, we must respect and honor each others viewThose that prefer Hecklers, say that Hecklers draw in the crowdsPersonally if the Holy Spirit didnt draw in the crowd, then it may not be the work of the Holy Spirit. It may even be our flesh. If an OAP prefers to engage with Hecklers, then let the Heckler heckleBut if the OAP prefers to not engage in Hecklers, be respectful and ask the Heckler to step aside to dialog with youBear in mind that most Hecklers are trying to shut up the GospelSignage can draw in crowds, without the hecklerTheExpositor.tv36Dealing with Hecklers Use discernment with HecklersKnow when your engaging of apologetics turns into sinDistracting a Heckler from my OA preaching, may prevent me from sinningPaul said in 2 Tim 2:24-26, Andthe Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome butkind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponentswith gentleness. Godmay perhaps grant them repentanceleading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape fromthe snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. For me I prefer to keep preaching to the crowd, while my partner dialogs with the Heckler. Then its a win win!

TheExpositor.tv37Dealing with Hecklers Chris Raymond of First Baptist Church of the Lakes said the following ~A herald should not negotiate with an enemy of the cross, who is trying to stop the gospel from going forth. Many falsely assume the public proclamation of the gospel is a conversation, when it is not. A herald is to unroll the scroll, and proclaim what the King has charged, and commanded to the people. Raymonds comment does not surprise me, as his church has men like Paul Washer and Voddie Baucham preach from behind their pulpit.

TheExpositor.tv38Some examples of how to handle hecklers Justin Edwards at UCLA http://youtu.be/vWXA3HsC5kg Bill Rhetts at University of Texas http://youtu.be/O3N1NPw5uIM Robert Gray here http:/youtu.be/WuAaIzQjxmU TheExpositor.tv39TheExpositor.tv40Dealing with the Stop Judging Me cardDealing with the Stop Judging Me cardYoure going to hear the Your judging me card a lot.True Jesus did say in Matt 7:1-2, Judge not, lest you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.But here is the Biblical context of Matt 7:1-2 (Jesus was..)We are not necessarily to judge the world, because they are doing what is expected from them. However, we are to judge righteously. Jesus said in John 7:24, Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment. If a sinners drunk then hes a drunkard (warn him of 1 Cor 6:9)If a woman walks into an Abortuary, shes probably not receiving prenatal care (warn her & offer her the alternatives to abortion, and the solutions to her sin problem) TheExpositor.tv41Dealing with the Stop Judging Me cardIf a professed believer is in the world i.e. bars ect, then warn them with the Word of God. Warn them of the wrath of God.James 4:4-5 says, You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us?1 John 2:15-17 says, Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.For all thatisin the worldthe lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of lifeis not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.Jesus said in John 15:19, If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but becauseyou are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.TheExpositor.tv42TheExpositor.tv43Being ready to give an answer 43Being ready to give an answer If necessary, be ready to rebuke a professed believer (i.e. worldly places, or like the strip club girls below. If interested later, video examples below).1 Cor 5:12-13 says, For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. Purge the evil person from among you.Paul said in Gal 6:1, Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.Be ready to Biblically answer their questions, and/or defend your faith. 1 Pet 3:15 says, But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;Video #1 Judy at the nude bar https://youtu.be/XTfu5Oam6fU Video #2 male customer http://youtu.be/RjEoV9eiZSoVideo #3 man employs his wife as the stripper http://youtu.be/73WCUnJCRzs

TheExpositor.tv4444TheExpositor.tv45Developing our messages or sermonsOur messages / sermons

Spend time in prayer, study and know the Biblical Text that youre going to teachThe acronym K.I.S.S.Paul said in1 Cor 1:17, For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. We dont need to be clever with our words. We dont need tricks, gimmicks, gadgets, skits, magic, entertainment, word games, jokes, or comedy. But we do need the Gospel.Every five minutes a Christian is martyred for sharing the Gospel. How dare we replace the Gospel with extra-biblical ideologies. Although hero's i.e. Westley, Edwards, Whitefield & Spurgeon were known for using catchy clichs to grab their attentionTheExpositor.tv46TheExpositor.tv47The Law vs the GospelTheExpositor.tv48

The Law vs the GospelThe Law is for the unsaved, and the Gospel is for the saved. The Law is absent the Gospel, but the Gospel is not absent the Law.In the N.T. they dont contradict each other, they complement each other.Pauls Pastoral instruction is in 1 Tim 1:8-11, But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

TheExpositor.tv49The Law vs the GospelIt says in Gals 3:19-25, What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.(Have someone give a demonstration of presenting The Law and the Gospel)

TheExpositor.tv50TheExpositor.tv51A Check up from the neck upA Check up from the neck upNot in a legalistic way, but before you evangelize with our team, ask yourself ~Am I above reproach? Is my reputation in the world, as good as it is in church? (1 Tim 3:7)Stay in prayerStay in the WordHold each other accountableKeep His armor on (Eph 6:10-20)Be fed and led. Fed by the WORD and led by the Holy SpiritTell the truth in love, but love with the truthTheExpositor.tv52TheExpositor.tv53When evangelism becomes a stumbling block When evangelism becomes a stumbling block

Let us always be mindful of this. I would never want any of our evangelizing efforts, to cause another to stumbleDont exchange phone numbers with the opposite sex (to minister to later)Dont minister at the bars, if you have a drinking problemGuard yourselves with those on our team of the opposite sex (try to have a third person)We all lust, but if lust really has a grip on your life, then beaches or other worldly outdoor summer events may be problematic for you"Be wise as serpentsand harmless as doves."Matthew 10:16

TheExpositor.tv54TheExpositor.tv55Dealing with the policeDealing with the police

God has established three major institutionsMarriage (Gen 2)The government (Gen 9) and The church

TheExpositor.tv56Dealing with the policeRom 13:1-5 says, Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.TheExpositor.tv57Dealing with the policeRomans 13 provides only a limited authority to government Vs 3 says, For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:The Lord defines what is good and what is evilThe Biblical Christian, the Church (the bride of Christ) is good, and not evilWhen law enforcement departs from their limited authority (or willingly goes against Christs bride), they have stepped outside their God ordained authorityHence, the church does not have to submit to their unbiblical authority, nor unlawful requestsThe government and the police, et.al. are ordained to wield the sword against evil doers, and to praise those who do goodTheyre not ordained to go against Christs bride (but they will)

TheExpositor.tv58Dealing with the policeWhat Roms 13:1-5 does mean ~That were to respect those Gov authorities over usAnd were to even submit to their lawful demands (within reason)However what Roms 13:1-5 does NOT mean is ~Were not to polish the policeman's bootsWere not to kiss their gluteus maximusWere bond-slaves to Christ, not to man

TheExpositor.tv59Dealing with the policeIs there ever a time when we can chose to not obey the law, or the lawman?Yes when mans law goes against Gods law (for more click here http://www.theexpositor.tv/?p=8444)How did the disciples deal with thisActs 5:27-29 says, And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, saying, Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Mans blood on us! But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: We ought to obey God rather than men.TheExpositor.tv60Dealing with the policeKnow the laws of the land, and know your 1st amendment rights (Christians do not have Christian rights, but in America we do have the Bill of Rights)Often times the police are wrong, or are haters of ChristIf theyre not saved, theyre enemies of Christ (Col 1:21 & Rom 5:10)You may have to make that difficult decision, that could get you arrestedPaul said in 1 Cor 15:58, Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.Jude said in Jude 1:3 it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Soteriology

We really should devote an entire PowerPoint to this one word. The term soteriology comes from the Greek terms stria (salvation and/or deliverance) via a str (a Saviour or Deliverer) In systematic theology, it refers to the study of the doctrine of salvation.Soteriology, the doctrine of salvation, must be the grandest theme in the Scriptures. It embraces all of time as well as eternity past and future. It relates in one way or another to all of mankind, without exception. It even has ramifications in the sphere of the angels. It is the theme of both the Old and New Testaments. It is personal, national, and cosmic. And it centers on the greatest Person, our Lord Jesus Christ. Charles Ryrie

TheExpositor.tv65SoteriologyFor the purposes of this presentation, lets fast forward thru the ABCs of Soteriology, applying it to evangelismWe are just sowers of His SeedThe Apostle Paul said, Who then is Paul, and whoisApollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one?I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 1st Cor 3:5-8Which means we dont manufacture results, nor create resultsWe dont ask them to accept Jesus into their heart, then declare them savedTheExpositor.tv66SoteriologyWe dont ask them to give a raise your hand roll-call, then declare them savedWe dont get them to make a decision, then declare them saved We dont have them repeat an Unbiblical Sinners Prayer, then declare them saved (article here http://www.theexpositor.tv/?p=6676 )The Lord adds to His church as He choosesAll the results belong to the Lord, andAll the glory goes to the Lord

TheExpositor.tv67SoteriologySalvation is entirely a matter of Gods free, sovereign choice Nevertheless, it is equally true to say that if a man is not saved, it is because of his own rejection of the gospel which is offered to him. ~ Martyn Lloyd-Jones.Evangelism is not a ball game to see how many souls I can profess to win to Christ. Evangelism is a matter of eternal life, or eternal damnation. Only the Lord knows the heart, but in time we can examine the fruit. ~ Bill RhettsHeres a video of a fellow responding to the Gospel, as I open-air preached in Dallas Texas http://youtu.be/CK4ljmYKno0

If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay.
