All Grade 3 and 6 students in publically funded schools in Ontario will be participating in Language and Mathematic assessment activities during the last week of May and first week of June. Beverley Acres’ Grade 6 students will write their EQAO tests May 28-31.
If you have a child in grade 6 please do not schedule appointments or vacations during this week. Full attendance will assist in administering these tests in a standardized fashion and within the timelines given. Students are required to make up any tests they miss due to absence. EQAO has prepared a bulletin to help parents understand what their children can expect during the administration of the Grade 6 assessment.
You can access the bulletin in the “Parent Resource” section at www.eqao.ca
Good luck to all our Grade 6 students.

Junior Girls and Boys Basketball
Beverley Acres was the host of the 2018 Junior Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Tournaments. On April 19th, the Junior Boys Basketball team competed in the area tournament. We had home court advantage, which we took advantage of in the first 3 games that marked an easy path to the semi finals. Our toughest game came at the end of the day against an extremely intimidating team from Pool B. Even though we were disappointed with the loss, we were still happy with our 3rd place finish over all. You may have been third, but to all of us here at BAPS, you’re #1. All line ups played ex-tremely well. The coaches were really impressed with the unique contributions brought to the game by all the members of the team. We want to extend a special shout out to our MVP Jayden, who’s defensive plays were crucial to all of our wins. A BIG THANK YOU to Mr. Botelho for stepping in last minute to host the Boys’ tournament! The tournament ran smoothly, and was a success overall! Mr. B, we really appreciated all of your hard work. Without you the tournament would not have been able to take place and we couldn’t have competed at all! On April 26th, the Junior Girls Basketball team competed in the area tournament. They dominated in all of their games, and were able to advance to the quarter finals and competed for a 3rd or 4th place finish against our newest rivals, Sixteenth Avenue. Our third place finish would not have been possible without our team captain and MVP Krysten Loi, our fierce but quite leader. Thank you to the intermediate coaches for their support this season long, and especially for their encouragement at the tournaments! Thank you to the grade 8 helpers for all of your help and leadership at the tournament, and for staying late!! A big thank you to Mr. Fish for organizing and hosting the tournament! A special thank you to Mme Kennedy and Mme Nokes for dedicating their time and coaching expertise.
Overall, it was an overwhelmingly successful two days at BAPS. We are so grateful for an incredibly successful season! We are very proud of all team members - looking forward to next year!
BAPS 2017-2018 Yearbook will be available for order soon. A letter will be coming home soon. Purchase your yearbook on School Cash Online no later than Wednesday, May 16th.
BAPS 2017-2018 Yearbook
Mme Chamberland, Mme Doucas, Mme Lévesque and Mr. Fish would like to congratulate all the members of the Beverley Acres Skills Club for a great season. The 23 students who made up the Club showed great col-laboration, perseverance, and hard work. From the YRDSB Skills Challenge at Seneca College, to the Robot-ics Challenge at Nobleton Public School and the PEO Engineering Challenge at Sir William Mulock Secondary School, BAPS students did an amazing job of representing our school. We really enjoyed working with all of you, and hope to see many of you again next year when the Club starts up again!
A special thank you to all the staff involved for their dedication.

Together We’re Better
On April 26, six Grade 7 and 8 students went to Bill Crothers S.S for the Together We’re Better conference. All elementary schools in YRDSB were represented at this conference. There, they learned about discrimination, equity, anti racism, and anti bullying. They participated in some workshops where they got to know students from other schools and shared strategies for inclusion at their schools. They talked about different things going on in our school - both things we want to celebrate, and things where we have room for improvement. We talked about how we can make positive change in our school community in order to make our school a positive, respectful and happy place. The team will be meeting regularly to plan activities for the school. As noted at the conference they are not only the leader of tomorrow, they are the leaders of today!

Autism Awareness Club
April was Autism Awareness Month and our students have been “Lighting it up Blue!” More than 25 enthusiastic and compassionate students from all grades have been meeting twice a week to learn about ASD and facilitate a school-wide initiative to educate others. This group was led by Dena (grade 5) and Brandon (grade 6) who worked together to plan this initiative. They led the team of students in creating blue puzzle pieces that were displayed throughout the school with information about ASD. They also had the opportunity to learn from the ASD Board Consultant during a 40 minute presentation aimed at encouraging their leadership in this area.
It’s time to remind children about being safe in our community. It’s a good time for parents to remind children about personal safety. Here's what children need to know:
Their name, age, telephone number, address, city and province. This can be done through rhyme or
song.
How to contact their parents at any time, by memorizing cell or work numbers.
How and under what circumstances to call 911.
To never approach or enter a stranger's vehicle. A responsible adult would never ask a child for
directions or any other question for that matter.
Make sure they know they have a right to say "no" to an adult, especially when the adult is asking them
to do something they have been taught is wrong or feels uncomfortable. Reminding children of this right is important because children are taught from a young age to respect adults.
To always tell parents where they will be and to never enter someone's home without their parent's
permission.
If home alone, never admit it when answering the phone. Never answer a knock at the door or speak
through it. Adults can be very persuasive. Teach your child to call you if there is a knock at the door and if they fear for their safety, teach them to call 911. Make sure they know that police officers are there to help them and would not get mad if it were a false alarm.
If they think they are being followed or are in danger they should run home or to a public place. If
someone grabs them, they should try to get away, yelling and screaming while doing so. It is important to play in safe areas, never take shortcuts and stick with a buddy whenever possible. It is never too early or too late to teach children the importance of personal safety. Common sense, communication and consistency are the keys. Remind children to alert a responsible adult if something strange happens that makes them feel uncomfortable. Remember, crime prevention is everyone's

The process of preparing for a new school year involves predicting student enrolment and structuring the organization of classes and teachers to match the enrolment. We ask that families assist us with these preparations by informing the office (in writing) if you are moving out of the Beverley Acres area. Please include the last day of attendance and the school your child(ren) will be attending. This will also facilitate in the transfer of your child’s records (OSR) to be ready for September.

Messages and Calls to Students
The office continues to receive calls from parents wanting to leave messages for their child regarding medical appointments, afterschool arrangements, having to talk to child, etc. Please remember to make these arrangements with your child prior to school whenever possible. We realize that this is not always possible but any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated. To minimize disruption to classes, we will call students down to pick up things after morning announcements, just prior to morning recess and at lunch, when classes are not being taught. We make every effort to safeguard instructional time. Parents dropping off lunches are asked to please inform your child ahead of time to pick up their lunch from the “lunch bench” outside the main office. Students are not permitted to go outside into the driveway or parking lot to pick up their lunch from your vehicle as this is “unsafe” and there is no supervision outside at this time. Thank you for your help in this matter.
If you pick up your child at the end of the day, please ensure that you arrive by 2:20 pm. If you know that you will not be on time, your child will be supervised by our staff at the back of the school and not be left to wait unsupervised at the front of the school.
Your child will proceed to the front of the school at 2:35 along with our bus students. Students will not be left waiting for parents outside alone at the end of the day.
Please ensure that arrangements are made to pick up your child by 2:20 or 2:35, at the latest.
If you plan to pick up your child up early from school you must call and arrive at the school before 2:00 p.m. Requests after this time will not be honoured as they disrupt our dismissal procedure. Thank you for your assistance.

Students who will be returning to school after 15 or more days of vacation will be required to comply with the following process to confirm their space in their home school. Failure to do so will result in the student being removed from the school’s register. Complete Extended Absence form Give written notice of the dates for the absence and expected date of
return Notify school on the thirtieth day of absence of expected date of return
and contact with the school must be made every 15 days after that
Given current accommodation issues and Ministry of Education class size caps, parents/guardians who do not respond through this ongoing communication format may be required to have their child(ren) attend school at an alternate location which can accommodate them.
Extended Vacations & Absences
Page 10 Beverley Acres Banner
Instructional Time Begins at 8:00 a.m.!
Our entry bell is at 7:58. When students arrive late for school, not only have they missed part of their program, but their arrival is disruptive to the other students in their class. Students are expected to attend school on a regular basis and arrive on time. It is essential that students learn the importance of being punctual as it is a life skill everyone needs to develop. We understand that sometimes late arrivals are unavoidable due to emergencies and special appointments, but the majority of late days can be prevented with some careful planning by each family. We know traffic can be a challenge, however, if your child is eligible for bussing, and there is a reason why your child does not take the bus transportation provided and you must drive him or her to school, please arrive by 7:45, before the buses. Supervision begins outside at that time, so your child can wait for the bell with their friends in safety behind the school. Thank you for your cooperation with this extremely important issue.

Following these procedures fosters independence in our students and ensures a greater degree of safety for all. We appreciate your support in keeping our students safe!

Too Sick to Go Out for Recess?
Then you are too sick to attend school. It is an expectation at Beverley Acres that if your child attends school then they must go outside at the recess breaks. Beverley Acres Public School (BAPS)
Welcome to Spring!!! It’s hard to believe but only a couple of months until Summer vacation. Where did the school year go??? Well, to help close out another school year, our School Council will be hosting the annual Community Event, which will take place on Thurs., May 3
rd from 5 – 7 pm.
This outdoor event will showcase some of our local businesses in the area. We will be having M & M’s serving up some delicious burgers, hot dogs, and much more hot off the grill. While enjoying something to eat, you will have the opportunity to stop by some booths to get some information and possibly swag. Don’t forget to pass by the Bake Sale to buy some yummy treats and homemade goodies. Oh and lastly, don’t forget to pick up some raffle tickets. There are some awesome prizes like a bike, gift cards, food baskets and so much more. Thank you to all the Teachers, Administration and Volunteers that helped with BAPS on Broadway (BOB). It was another successful production and full house for the shows. Kudos to all the talented children, who spent countless hours practicing and preparing over the past few months. Both teachers and students had put in many countless hours during recess, lunchtime and any spare moments they had. It truly was a great performance by all! On behalf of School Council, we would like to thank the Teachers and Staff at BAPS for their continued hard work and dedication to our children. We would also like to thank our parent volunteers for all their countless efforts in helping out with these two big events in April and May. Looking forward to seeing you all at the Community Event! Do you know what positions are on Council?
Beverley Acres Council is made up of many dedicated parents, whom work hard to
coordinate and execute many different events throughout our school calendar year. All
these parent volunteers also dedicate their time by attending meetings about 5 times in the
school year. Without their support, we could not bridge a more solid foundation between
the school and home life.
Below are some of the vacant positions on Council for next year 2018-2019:
Chair, Fundraising Committee, Community Event Lead, Pizza Lead, Communications Officer, Pita Lead, Parent Workshop, Student Workshop & Staff Appreciation Lead Don’t miss an opportunity to be on a winning team next year. If you are interested, please
