"And now, to support my spirits, which indeed wanted it very much,
I went to my little store, and took a small sup of rum; which however I did,
then and always very sparingly, knowing I could have
no more when that was gone."
Tell us about your likes, preference, and how
adventurous you would like your drinks to be…
Beverage Menu
It would be another 8 years before any major publication attempted to actually define
the word “cocktail”. The May 13th, 1806 edition of The Balance and Columbian Repository,
a newspaper based in Hudson, New York, did just that. In it, a question was posed:
"What is a cocktail?” It went on to reply: “Cocktail is a stimulating liquor,
composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters.”
Today, the word “cocktail” is ubiquitous with any beverage menu, often used
to describe the collective group of mixed alcoholic drinks we find in them. While it may be
used interchangeably with “Drink” and “Beverage”, it is certainly a word far more
shrouded in history and intrigue than any of its counterparts.
It is important to note that there are countless tales and accounts that detail the exact origin
of the term cocktail. While each story has its own charm and allure, it is difficult to
verify which are rooted in absolute truth, and which have simply benefited
from years of telling and retelling.
What we do know, is that people have been mixing drinks for centuries. It isn’t until
the end of the 17th century, however, that precursors to the modern day cocktail
became sufficiently popular to be recorded in writing. The first known printed
use of the word “cocktail” was in The Morning Post and Gazetteer in
London, England, on March 20th, 1798.
