INTRODUCTION

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY :- is defined as the branch of chemistry that deals with carbon compounds containing usually hydrogen and one or more additional elements like oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, halogens, phosphorous , etc . Organic compounds made up of only carbon and hydrogen atoms are called hydrocarbons and all other organic compounds may be regarded to have been derived from these hydrocarbons by replacement of one or more of their hydrogen atoms by other atoms or groups .

ALKENES

Acyclic unsaturated hydrocarbons containing a carbon – carbon double bond are called alkenes . They are also called as olefins ( oil forming ) since the lower members of this class such as ethene , propene etc .produce oily products on reaction with halogens such as chlorine and bromine . The C-C bond in alkenes is Sp2 hybridized .

Dehydrohalogenation

Alkyl halides when heated with alcoholic solution of potassium hydroxide eliminate a molecule of hydrogen halide to yield olefins .

Saytzeff rule :- whenever two alkenes are theoretically possible during a Dehydrohalogenation reaction it is always the more highly substituted alkene which predominates .
