EDITOR’S NOTE Many of us are very concerned about the drastic climate change happening around us and its many consequences impacting our daily lives. Since 2009, IOI Group has made a united stand to support Earth Hour, a green mission initiated by WWF to raise awareness about climate change. This move is in line with IOI’s long-term commitment to sustainable development and reducing the environmental footprint of our operations. In the Cover Feature of this issue, we would like to showcase some of the green initiatives implemented at our palm oil mills and IOI Oleochemical’s processing plants.

On the international front, more green initiatives are sighted at IOI Loders Croklaan Europe. Its processing plants are operated under the guiding principle of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” which aims to minimise the use of natural resources and to limit the production of waste. Read more about the various projects on energy efficiency and waste reduction in the Edible Oils segment.

IOI Properties Group Berhad (IOIPG) launched its latest township, Bandar Puteri @ Bangi, at the beginning of the year. More than 70% take-up rate was recorded during the two-day launch despite unfavourable market sentiments. We believe that this 370-acre integrated mixed development will be transformed into another signature township of IOIPG under its Bandar Puteri brand name in years to come.

Since opening its doors in November last year, IOI City Mall has recorded over 85% occupancy. This new lifestyle and entertainment shopping mall gives a new perspective on shopping experience to the nearby communities. Shoppers have even more choices now as new outlets such as Golden Screen Cinemas, HomePro, Wangsa Bowl, t-Lounge by Dilmah, and Dragon-I restaurant opened their doors at the mall recently. Find out more about the grand openings in the IOI Mall segment.

In support of the global movement to stop hunger, IOI Group kicked off the New Year with the "IOI-Stop Hunger Now’s Meal Packaging Event 2015" to pack meals for the flood victims in Kelantan. The event went on successfully with full support and participation from volunteers of IOI senior management, employees and their family members.

As the country counts down to the imposition of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on 1 April 2015, IOI headquarters and our operation units have been busy implementing the many changes required in our operations as well as conducting seminars and trainings for staff. This will ensure that we are ready for the implementation of the new tax system.

BERITAIOI04

In today’s world where consumption is fueled by an increasing human population,

every action in the supply (producer) and demand (consumer) chain will have an impact on the environment by way of a carbon footprint – significantly affecting the global climate.

Technological development, better process and product management form part of IOI Group’s long-term plan in reducing its carbon footprint, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption. Implemented group-wide, the plan adopts a holistic approach towards greening its supply chain from upstream agronomic practices all the way to downstream manufacturing division.

Further to its existing efforts in utilising biomass by-product to generate electricity and steam for mills and refineries, other green initiatives implemented by IOI Plantation and IOI Oleochemicals (IOI Oleo) are highlighted in this Cover Feature.

GHG Reduction & Renewable Energy

BIOGAS CAPTURING AND UTILISATION

IOI has taken proactive steps to reduce GHG emissions generated from its palm oil mill effluent (POME). It has commissioned two biogas capturing plants in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, replacing the current open ponds palm oil mill treatment system, to capture methane gas or biogas generated from POME. The latter’s fermentation process in the newer systems allows the effluent to be turned into renewable energy which can be utilised for power generation or other heating and energy source to replace current usage of fossil fuel.

The first biogas plant with an engineered covered lagoon system, located at Pukin Palm Oil Mill in Johor, was commissioned in July 2014. It will be converted at a later stage into Bio-Compressed Gas to replace fossil fuel for heating.

Meanwhile, the second biogas plant in Ladang Sabah Palm Oil Mill, Sabah uses the covered steel digester tank system. The biogas plant upon completion will be capable of generating 1.5 MW power for the mill, office and housing complex, replacing the current diesel-generated power. Its biogas capturing and power generation parts are now at the advanced stage of commissioning.

HARVESTING SOLAR ENERGY

Malaysia is situated at the equatorial region with an average solar radiation of 400–600 MJ/m2 per month and a mean daily sunshine hours ranging from four to eight hours. Taking advantage of the bountiful solar radiation, IOI Oleo in Prai, Penang embraced the concept of Green Energy by harvesting solar energy for electricity generation. It has obtained a grant from Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) for 0.5 MW generation with a feed-in tariff (FiT) commencing 31 December 2013.

Solar energy system has been installed to provide sustainable benefits; for example, offset energy consumption, save CO2 as well as providing a long term hedge against utility rates to deliver cost savings.

Flat panel solar collectors installed on IOI Oleo’s warehouse rooftops.

HARNESSING POWER OF CO-GENERATION PLANT

A co-generation (co-gen) or combined heat and power (CHP) plant uses a heat engine or power station to simultaneously generate electricity and useful heat. IOI Oleo is investing some RM30 million into the installation of a 6.5 MW co-gen plant in Prai which is expected to be erected in June with commissioning due in September 2015.

This co-gen plant generates electricity through the gas turbine system, while the waste heat in the flue gas from the turbine can be further used to generate medium-pressure steam through a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRGS). It is a high efficiency system whereby the total energy efficiency is boosted to above 90% as opposed to conventional co-gen systems at 75-85% and a mere 39% for conventional power supply systems.

Besides improving energy efficiency and reducing energy costs, CHP also helps the environment by significantly reducing emissions of harmful gasses (CO2, nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides), enhancing power reliability (reduces vulnerability to power outages and dependence on electric utility) and quality.

Further green initiatives under consideration include adding an absorption chiller to use the co-gen’s waste-heat from gas turbine or water heater to provide air-conditioning to buildings. This means the gas turbine produces electricity, hot water and air-conditioning – leading the co-gen evolution to tri-generation.

GENERATING HEAT AND HEAT RECOVERY

Over at IOI Oleo in Johor Bahru, a biogas boiler innovation led to an overwhelming amount of CO2 reduction. It involves using the biogas generated from anaerobic digesters of effluent treatment plant to power up a specially-designed boiler, which in turn generates steam for tank farm heating.

These two biogas plants are expected to contribute an estimated GHG reduction of 120,000 MT carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent per annum. With the third biogas capturing plant in the pipeline, IOI expects a further reduction of 70,000 MT CO2/annum. This plant, currently in the tendering stage, will also be utilised for power generation.

In addition to further reducing IOI’s carbon footprint, the renewable energy initiatives also derive economic benefit for the Group. The existence of proven technologies and availability of knowledge and incentives will see IOI achieving its target to have all of its 14 mills equipped with biogas capture facility by year 2020.

Chart detailing the benefits of solar panel system.

With a yield of 707,779 kWh, IOI Oleo’s solar panel system saved a total of 421,836 kg of CO2. This means that 39,985 trees (or equivalent to 1.4 million sq m of forest) would have to be planted to absorb the amount of CO2 saved by this solar panel system.

Green Way Forward

In driving the responsible greening of palm oil production, IOI has displayed ingenuity and prudency in managing its carbon footprint, waste produce and energy consumption. Likewise, IOI Loders Croklaan has similar initiatives, some of which are briefly outlined in the Edible Oils section of this issue, geared towards the bigger picture of Sustainability and meeting the needs of an increasingly environmentally aware marketplace.

The green road is the proverbial less travelled one, but surely a more rewarding path as IOI fulfils its aspiration in reducing dependency on fossil fuels and mitigating climate change.

Heat exchanger, or commonly known as economisers.

VAC helps IOI Oleo to be more energy-efficient.

The biogas boiler is non-polluting and uses recycled and renewable energy source, making it a better choice compared to conventional boilers running on fossil fuel. The CO2 emission reduction from this initiative is estimated at 453,600 kg/annum.

Prudency in energy management also led the team to recover waste heat from thermal oil heaters. In the process of heating thermal oil, the flue gas exiting the heaters with temperatures exceeding 300 degrees Celcius is now channelled to heat exchangers, commonly known as economisers – instead of being released immediately into the atmosphere – to heat boiler feedwater. This means that less energy is used by the boilers to convert feedwater to steam. Natural gas savings are translated to 280,000 sm3/annum or almost 400,000 kg/annum of CO2 reduction!

Biogas boiler at the effluent treatment plant.

MAXIMISING LOW ENERGY ECO-FRIENDLY SOLUTIONS

Advancement in technology allows for a highly efficient low energy solution in IOI Oleo’s bid to reduce energy consumption. The installation of vapour absorption chiller (VAC), in replacing four 20-year-old conventional chillers, at its refinery complex in Johor Bahru meant that a 120 kW unit sufficed, reducing energy requirement by one-third compared to a 360 kW conventional chiller.

Plus, the lithium bromide VAC utilises the heat from refining process for cooling. This eco-friendly technology, in addition to being noiseless, does not use chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)-based refrigerant that contributes to volatile organic compound (VOC)-based air pollutant. It is estimated to help reduce CO2 emission at 1.2 MT/annum.

Corporation Berhad (IOIC) posted a pre-tax profit of RM94.6 million for the second quarter (Q2) ended

31 December 2014 as compared to RM487.3 million a year ago. The drop was attributed to an unrealised fair value loss in foreign currency forward exchange contracts arising from a weaker ringgit. The revenue of RM2.88 billion also marked a slight decline from RM2.94 billion.

The plantation division’s Q2 FY2015 profit decreased by four percent to RM297.3 million from RM310.2 million due mainly to lower crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel prices realised, mitigated by higher CPO extraction rate. Average CPO price realised was RM2,187/MT against RM2,424/MT in Q2 FY2014. As for the resource-based manufacturing division, excluding the unrealised fair value loss in foreign currency forward exchange contracts for Q2 FY2015 and Q2 FY2014, its underlying profit of RM215 million in the period under review is 19% lower mainly due to lower margin from oleochemicals sub-segment.

Meanwhile, IOI Properties Group Berhad (IOIPG) recorded an operating profit of RM348.9 million in its Q2 ended 31 December 2014 which included a fair value gain of RM178.3 million on the completion of IOI City Mall that has commenced operation on 20 November 2014. Its Q2 FY2015 operating profit of RM170.6 million

Q2 Earnings for IOIC and IOIPGIOI

(after excluding the above-mentioned fair value gain on investment properties of RM178.3 million) is slightly lower than the RM170.8 million (after excluding one off gain on acquisition of subsidiaries of RM198 million) in Q2 FY2014. The decrease is mainly due to higher related marketing and selling expenses.

The increase in Q2 FY2015 revenue to RM448.3 million from RM392.6 million was contributed by all divisions – property development, property investment, leisure and hospitality, and other operations.

Going forward, IOIC and IOIPG expect to perform satisfactorily for the remaining financial period of 2015.

CORPORATE UPDATES

BERITAIOI 07

On 7 March 2015, IOI Group of Companies and All Malayan Estates Staff Union (AMESU) signed the IOI/AMESU

Collective Agreement 2014 at a signing ceremony held at Pearl International Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

About 150 AMESU staff witnessed the signing ceremony in which IOI was represented by Group Plantation Director Dato’ Foong Lai Choong, while AMESU Honorary General Secretary Mr R. Jey Kumar signed on behalf of the plantation workers’ union. The Collective Agreement is effective from 1 January 2014 until 31 December 2016.

In his speech, Dato’ Foong highlighted that IOI has always aimed to strike a “win-win” situation for both the company and the union for the staff’s benefit. The original intention was to align with or adopt the MAPA/AMESU Collective Agreement 2014, so there will

be no comparison between IOI and Malayan Agricultural Producers Association (MAPA) companies in the future. The IOI/AMESU Collective Agreement 2014 could not be concluded earlier due to some outstanding issues. However, with the Collective Agreement now in place and a new salary scale, Dato’ Foong hoped that staff will continue to contribute to the company’s growth, increase productivity and work together to achieve the corporate goals.

After the signing ceremony, Dato’ Foong presented a cheque of RM12,000 to Mr Kumar for the AMESU Education Fund.

HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

BERITAIOI09

Overcoming the “human traffic jam” requires logical thinking and

cooperation from everyone.

In the competitive world of business, organisations are in need of people with more than just functional and intellectual competence. Combinations

of strong inter- and intrapersonal skills, with functional expertise and intellect, are necessary to have the competitive edge.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is about recognising, managing and utilising emotions in positive and constructive ways. It is also about recognising other people’s emotional states and learning how to engage with them. Self-awareness, self-esteem, compassion and empathy towards others, and adaptability are all linked to EQ.

Recognising the importance of EQ, the Training Department at IOI HQ organised three sessions of “Working with Emotional Intelligence” workshop for employees ranging from non-executive staff to managers. The workshops were conducted by Mr Eric Bryan, an experienced trainer from Leaderonomics, on 11 and 12 February, and 4 March 2015 respectively.

Working with Emotional Intelligence

The participants completed a personality test to reveal aspects of their individual character, and those possessing similar characteristics were grouped together to accomplish a group task. The nuances of each personality were clearly articulated for everyone to understand the fact that we work with different people daily, and due to our differences, working together can be quite challenging at times. The trainer also gave tips on how to manage the differences and the resulting stress from having to deal with the various personalities that we encounter.

Overall, the participants had a better understanding of EQ from the topics discussed such as self-awareness (knowing who you are), self-management (managing one’s own emotions), social awareness (understanding others) and relationship management (working with others to achieve goals).

Participants working together to plan their ideal workplace.

MORE TRACEABILITY ACTORS AGAINST RSPO

ASEAN Oleochemical Manufacturers Group (AOMG) participated in the 3rd ICIS Asian Oleochemicals Conference held from

4 to 5 February 2015 at Parkroyal Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. AOMG Advisor Ir Qua Kiat Seng presented a paper titled “Oleochemicals and Sustainability” which was prepared in consultation with AOMG Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil Technical Working Group (RSPO TWG) Chairman Mr Choong Wai Tuck.

Ir Qua showed that RSPO continues to be diluted by numerous traceability platforms. The United Nation’s (UN) Guide to Traceability published in 2014 had listed a dozen of traceability actors for palm oil with RSPO as the very first.

As of today, there are at least half a dozen more new actors. He also emphasised that AOMG members, as staunch supporters of RSPO, are the gateway for sustainable and traceable palm-based oleochemicals. While AOMG has opened the gate, there still needs to be a market pull for substantial physical certified sustainable palm oleochemicals uptake in the supply chain. Ir Qua’s paper was chaired by Sinarmas Director (Marketing and Sales) Mr Madhav C Menon.

During the conference, there was a panel discussion on “Working towards Sustainability in the Oleochemicals Value Chain” chaired by Carotino Sdn Bhd Executive Director Mr U R Unnithan. The panel members were IOI Oleochemicals Executive Director Mr Tan Kean Hua, Unilever Managing Director (Oleochemicals) Mr Saikrishna Devarakonda and Ir Qua.

Mr Tan stated that traceability is not equal to sustainability. He expressed concerns that the multinational companies’ own traceability schemes, while passing the audit cost to the supplier, bypassed paying the premium rightly earned and due to the plantation and smallholders who are RSPO-certified.

Webinar on Sustainability

On 12 February 2015, IOILC organised its very first webinar (web-based seminar), a highly sustainable way of engaging with customers where attendants can easily participate from any personal computing devices connected to the Internet.

The webinar was virtually attended by 30 participants as IOILC Global Sustainability Director Mr Ben Vreeburg (pix) presented the audience with the company’s sustainable activities and achievements over the last few years. He also engaged the audience in constructive discussions on future steps to create a traceable and sustainable palm oil supply chain. Topics discussed included IOILC’s key commitments on sustainability and mutual responsibility, mill verification programme, and time-bound plan, among others.

The webinar garnered positive reactions from the participants and can be viewed on: www.croklaan.com.

IOILC UNVEILS LATEST PUBLICATION ON QUALITY

The food industry today is more complex than it has ever been before. Agricultural production methods have become highly

intensive, the supply chain extends around the globe and, in our particular sector, there has been significant growth in the handling of vegetable oils.

Such a situation demands a different, more holistic approach to quality management. Its latest publication, “Quality Matters” addresses IOI Loders Croklaan’s (IOILC) sense of extreme responsibility for its products and, consequently, in controlling its supply chain. Over the years, IOILC has acquired a great deal of control over every aspect of that chain (from tree to customer) ensuring that every person involved – whether at the oil palm plantation, production/processing facilities, or on the road transporting the materials – is aware that the food that they are handling may eventually be consumed by their own families.

In recent years, IOILC has further intensified its quality initiatives by introducing global quality coordination, building a global quality system and intensifying contact by means of inter-regional training and inter-company auditing. All of its worldwide production facilities now run food safety management schemes recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).

“Quality Matters”, however, refers to much more than just the supply chain. “This magazine was specially compiled to give an insight, in the words of its employees, partners and customers, into how IOILC’s focus on quality extends to all areas of the company. How every single day, we work to optimise every aspect of our operations, from our analytical capabilities to our engineering solutions, in order to meet the highest quality and food safety requirements,” said IOILC Europe Chief Operating Officer Dr Loek Favre.

During an intensive tender procedure in 2014, IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC) presented itself as the most suitable tropical

oils and fats partner by offering the best possible total value to support Mondelez International in growing its global snacking business.

As a result, the two parties will sign a global supply agreement for another three years and define their aspirations in a partnership document. Through this agreement, IOILC reinforces its commitment to support Mondelez International to reach its global targets such as transforming snacking, driving efficiency to fuel growth and protecting the well-being of our planet.

IOILC in Europe, North America and Asia will offer Mondelez International its latest innovations on specialty and commodity oils and fats, and both parties will work closely to improve efficiency and cut costs through simplification of the products and processes.

Below lists the initiatives that are already implemented and future progress in terms of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle:

REDUCE – ENERGY SAVINGS IN ROTTERDAM AND WORMERVEER, THE NETHERLANDSThe Wormerveer refinery has made considerable energy savings. due mainly to the new deodoriser that uses only half of the energy compared to its predecessor. In Rotterdam, IOILC has taken steps in improving heat recovery methods and refining under milder conditions. Both locations have a so-called “energy-coordinator” that carefully monitors consumption, while continuously looking for new ways to reduce consumption. Last year, IOILC produced 6,500 MT lesser carbon dioxide (CO2) while increasing production – this saving equals to the annual emission of 500 Dutch families!

REUSE – PURE WATER FACTORYThe Wormerveer refinery uses a considerable amount of drinking water, enough to fill almost 100 Olympic-sized swimming pools per year. Noting that a large part of this water ends up in the sewer, IOILC started an intensive programme in 2014 to reuse its processing water. It now uses six percent less water. Additionally, IOILC has started the construction of a pure water factory in Wormerveer which aims to reuse 60% of its processing water. This new facility will be commissioned in June 2015.

RECYCLE – USED BLEACHING EARTHUsed bleaching earth is a large waste stream as it is only burnt in power plants to generate electricity but it contains more value than that. The oil in bleaching earth can be used for biofuels and the earth itself can be used as construction material. Together with several partners, IOILC is currently setting up a recycling facility for bleaching earth.

Moving forward, IOILC will continue to work on being even more sustainable.

SUSTAINABLEGROWTH

The term “Sustainability” goes beyond palm oil. Environmental impact is taken into consideration, including the use of energy and production of

waste. IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC) continuously monitors these factors to ensure sustainable growth.

Loders Croklaan (IOILC) Americas recently participated in several long-term energy reduction

programmes held in collaboration with local energy companies, namely Commonwealth Edison (commonly known as ComEd, the largest electric utility in Illinois) and Nicor Inc.

Specifically, the Strategic Energy Management (SEM) initiative is a new pilot programme that focuses on the reduction of energy through low or no-cost methodologies. IOILC Americas was among the 10 companies who are either IOILC’s customers or suppliers chosen to participate in this initiative. The goal of SEM was to bring these companies together to develop common strategies to reduce energy use at their respective facilities.

On 12 and 25 February 2015, IOILC Americas organised two separate SEM workshops at its Channahon facility. The first

workshop, themed “Identifying Energy-Saving Opportunities” featured presentations on energy waste and how to audit work areas to optimise wasted energy. The group also toured the plant and came away impressed by the complexity of its operations and informative explanation by the hosts.

Meanwhile, at the second workshop called “Energy Scan”, IOILC employees and representatives from ComEd/Nicor Inc worked together to review the current energy utilisation. Teams were formed around compressed air and electrical use, natural gas use and refrigeration. The teams reviewed equipment use and energy trends, while several teams participated in plant tours to observe how energy is being used. The teams then proposed possible projects for energy reduction, which will be rolled out for implementation once they are suitably vetted and approved by the management.

GENDER EQUALITY FOR GHANAIAN WOMEN IN SHEA INDUSTRY

On 25 March 2015, a partnership was announced between IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC), a global shea butter supplier, and The

Hershey Company to fund the construction of three warehouses in Northern Ghana that will improve incomes for women shea farmers and positively impact their livelihoods.

Both companies will provide funding to StarShea, a social business that commercialises shea butter supplied by its network of rural Ghanaian women, to construct three warehouses allowing the women’s cooperative to store shea nuts throughout the season, which will help increase the women’s profit for their shea crop.

“We are pleased to be partnering with The Hershey Company, who shares our commitment to responsible sourcing and improving the livelihoods of women in West Africa,” said IOILC Supply Chain Manager Africa Mr Joost-van Ginneken. “Since 2012, we have been StarShea’s most important global customer and we are thrilled to grow our relationship with them. The work they do supporting female shea producers is extremely important to the growth of the entire African continent.”

Female shea producers have limited access to capital they need to sustain their lives and business. StarShea will now be able to give women access to much-needed cash earlier in the shea season by buying their shea nuts at a premium at the beginning of the season and storing them in warehouses until they are sold to IOILC and ultimately, The Hershey Company.

On 11 March 2015, IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC) Americas hosted the first in a series of PHO Removal 201 courses in its

Creative Studio facility. The two-day course was designed to help food manufacturers seamlessly eliminate partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) in product formulations without sacrificing taste, quality, or texture.

A total of 15 participants, comprising existing and prospective customers from several companies specialising in various applications, benefited from lectures and hands-on demonstrations on the topics covered such as:

• NutritionofFat/HistoryofSaturatedFatversusTransFat• UnderstandingFatsandOils• TrendsinFatsandOils• PHOReplacementSolutions:ProsandCons• PalmSustainability• QualityControlandAnalysisofFatsandOilsofPalmOil,with

additional focus on the impact of trans fat on nutrition and labelling

The response and feedback was overwhelmingly positive. This success encouraged IOILC Americas to continue hosting more of such comprehensive educational courses, strengthening its reputation as the leading producer of palm-based fats and oils.

While partial hydrogenation has been introduced as an alternative for saturated fat, artificial PHOs contain trans-fats which are linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

PHO removal thus remains the region’s largest opportunity for growth as the industry awaits the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) decision on the Generally Recognised as Safe (GRAS) status of PHOs, widely used in processed foods such as frozen foods and baked goods.

Values. Several rounds of discussions followed, centred on how to attract new customers, retain existing customers and grow its key customers, which led to a strategic commercial framework that can be used for the coming years.

The three-day conference was a success as it inspired and equipped the sales and marketing team to achieve greater results in the challenging business environment.

CNY CHEER FOR Lovely RESIDENTS

This Chinese New Year (CNY) was made more meaningful for 65 residents and caregivers of Lovely Nursing Centre in Petaling

Jaya, Selangor, thanks to Putrajaya Marriott Hotel and Palm Garden Hotel’s collaborative effort in bringing cheers and hope into the lives of the underprivileged as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. This charity visit on 3 March 2015 was also in line with Putrajaya Marriott Hotel’s global CSR vision of “Spirit to Serve Our Communities®”.

The festive day had an auspicious start with the residents having a grand time tossing yee sang in anticipation of a good year ahead and enjoying the scrumptious dim sum servings, local and international food selections that catered to everyone’s palates. Heads of Departments and associates from the two hotels took the opportunity to mingle and serve the residents over lunch. They were entertained by Putrajaya Marriott Hotel’s strollers who performed several evergreen songs and two hotel associates who belted out a couple of Chinese songs that got everyone cheering in CNY mood.

In keeping with tradition, Putrajaya Marriott Hotel Executive Assistant Managers Mr Gary Green and Mr Henry Chong joined Palm Garden Hotel Manager Cik Zarilla Bashir in presenting the guests with a gift bag worth RM25 and an angpow packet worth RM20 each. Both hotels also presented the home with food provisions and groceries worth approximately RM4,500 to lighten the burden and expenses of their monthly needs.

Earlier on, both hotels pledged to assist the home to repair the leaking roof at the porch area and build extended roofing which will shelter wheelchair-bound occupants from weather conditions as they make their way to the toilets and bathrooms. The cost of maintenance and repair works summed up to RM3,500 in total.

The spirit of goodwill also prompted the Putrajaya Marriott Hotel’s Food & Beverage and Culinary Team to raise money to purchase household items such as a washing machine, three stand fans, three hot water dispensers, a large commercial rice cooker and a few packs of adult diapers which amounted to approximately RM2,000.

The home’s caretakers were overwhelmed with the generosity of the two hotels, and thanked them for coming to their aid in time of need. Established in July 1999, Lovely Nursing Centre provides shelter and care for abandoned elderly citizens.

On 28 March 2015, at the stroke of 8:30 pm, both hotels switched off all non-essential lightings for one hour to honour the green movement. At Putrajaya Marriott Hotel, all façade lights including signage and billboards as well as lights at the main lobby, function rooms, restaurants and corridors were switched off.

A total of 365 candles were lit to form the Earth Hour logo which symbolised the hotel’s pledge to conserve energy for 365 days in a year. Hotel associates distributed glow sticks and special plants for hotel guests. As they watched the Earth Hour’s official video, the guests were encouraged to support the global environmental effort.

Meanwhile at Palm Garden Hotel, guests celebrated the evening with a Flaming BBQ Dinner at Palms Café and viewed an Earth Hour documentary. They were also invited to a cake-lighting ceremony by placing candles on a specially-designed cake.

On top of that, in conjunction with Earth Hour, both hotels sold limited edition Earth Hour t-shirts to raise money for a trust fund that was set up for a newborn tapir named “Maulud”. The tapir was adopted by the hotels in a collaborative animal conservation effort with Zoo Negara to create awareness on the endangered animal as it inches closer to extinction due to constant habitat loss.

Hotel guests took the opportunity to purchase the t-shirts in support of this project, and pen down their wishes for Mother Nature and “Maulud”. The message board, with a donation box, collected many meaningful wishes since it was first put up beginning of the month.

The commendable effort by both hotels are among the many earth-friendly initiatives aimed to call for action in preserving earth’s natural resources and be sustainable in our energy and water consumption.

held at IOI City Mall on 24 January 2015. A total of 160 volunteers comprising IOI Group employees and their family members came together to successfully pack 70,000 meals in under two hours. The meal packets worth RM70,000 were sponsored by IOI Group’s charity arm, Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng.

The packed nutrient-rich meals were later distributed to affected Malaysian flood victims by Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) and Kelantan Foundation for the Disabled, or more commonly known as YOKUK Foundation (Yayasan Orang Kurang Upaya Kelantan). IOI Corporation Berhad Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Lee Yeow Chor remarked, “We are pleased to partner Stop Hunger Now Charitable Association to participate in a meal packaging event to bring awareness to the global hunger epidemic and do our part in support of our fellow Malaysians afflicted by the recent floods, especially those residing in the badly-hit East Coast states.”

Volunteers were divided into 12 groups, with each group of 13 people managing an assembly line in the meal packaging process. Staying true to the spirit of teamwork, the volunteers packed tirelessly to reach the goal of 70,000 meal packets. A gong was struck at every 10,000th meal packed and within two hours, the final and grand sound of gong signalled “Mission Accomplished” with everyone cheering on their effort. Dato’ Lee enthused that he was encouraged to see the volunteers’ high spirit and enthusiasm.

Students adopted under the SAP were recommended by the schools’ principals and headmasters based on their good academic results. Priorities were also given to students from families with financial hardship.

FAMILY SPIRIT

BERITAIOI30FOOD, FUN AND

LAUGHTER at KKIOI Prosperity Dinner

Kelab Keluarga IOI (KKIOI) welcomed the Year of Goat in a grand fashion with more than 380 IOI staff during the “Chinese

New Year (CNY) Prosperity Night Dinner” on 2 March 2015. The dinner was held at the Grand Ballroom, Putrajaya Marriott Hotel, serving a delightful nine-course Chinese dinner including a yee sang dish prepared by the hotel’s Summer Palace Chinese Restaurant. At the stroke of 7:30 pm, roaring shouts of good blessings filled the ballroom as everyone tossed the yee sang as high as they could!

Amidst the sumptuous dinner, the staff enjoyed the Chinese orchestra from Kuen Cheng High School who performed several CNY songs and evergreen hits of yesteryears. The festive mood continued with an acrobatic lion dance, accompanied by a cute “Prosperity God” and “Laughing Monk” whose funny antics tickled everyone’s funny bones. Both proved to be popular with the staff as many posed for “wefies” (group photo taken in “selfie” style) and constant encore calls after the two had retreated from the ballroom.

One of the highlights of the dinner was the lucky draw session comprising electrical home appliances and electronic gadgets which were given away intermittently as the evening went on. The grand prize of a SHARP 40-inch LED television worth RM1,188 eventually went to Ms Noor Azuwanna Rosli from IOI Plantation (Marketing Department).

The staff’s creativity took the spotlight as 11 participants paraded their unique handicraft during the “Piece of Art – Creative Angpow Packet Invention Competition”. They had meticulously prepared their creations after KKIOI had earlier in the week announced the competition via email. With an array of floral baskets, swans, fortune fans, golden pineapples, prosperity fishes and lambs made from angpow packets, the judges had a difficult time in choosing the best creation. Finally, Ms Sudha Nagarani from IOI Landscape Services emerged the winner with her blooming basket of flowers.

The night ended on a high note with everyone feeling contented with the food and great company. KKIOI wishes everyone a prosperous year ahead!
