Berforts Green PolicyBerforts Group Ltd formed a new ‘Green Team’ in 2007 to steer the company through the ever-growing legislation affecting environmental issues. Berforts Group Ltd Ltd is currently working towards attaining the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard, which monitors how a company is run and covers areas such as prevention of pollution and compliance with environmental regulation. The company has already been awarded Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody certification. The FSC accredits independent third-party organisations who can certify forest managers and forest product producers to FSC standards and promotes the use of paper from well managed sources. As far as is practicable, Berforts Group Ltd ensures that products and materials bought in from suppliers comply with current environmental legislation. Key members of staff are being trained on an ongoing basis to understand the requirements of the evolving legislation. As digital, short-run printers, Berforts Group Ltd are already well-placed to make a significant contribution to reducing pollution and damage to the environment, using less paper and chemicals.

The following highlights some of the initiatives and benefits:

* Paper is sourced from a supplier with Chain of Custody certification such as the Forest Stewardship Council or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, to ensure the paper comes from managed sources

* Digital print tends to be a more environmentally-friendly production method. It eliminates waste as there is no need to print extra packs, or to print stock (with letterheads, for example) that is then reprinted. Digital ink is easier to extract in the recycling process as it is absorbed less by the paper than in traditional methods

* Use adhesives which are water based - not only are these greener to produce, but if a spillage were to occur, they can be cleaned up with water and not solvent. Envelope windows can sometimes be eliminated, but if required, should be made of pulp or vegetable starch

* A printer that can also act as a mailing house can reduce the need to minimise transport-related pollution by shipping materials between locations. Berforts Group Ltd can offer a one-stop shop to maximise benefits to the customer and the environment

* We also offer Kodak digital glossing as a alternitive to lamination which is much moreeco- friendly, as there is no plastic involved in the process

Bookbinding and Finishing

Our services are flexible enough to complement traditional printing and digital printing alike, and as our binding is based around quality, not quantity, the fading art of true round-ing and backing is always kept alive. With the flexibility we are able to offer, we can easily fulfil what are often considered difficult jobs for other binding companies, e.g. tip-ins of folded maps, throw-outs and throw-clears, sprinkled edges and slip cases.

Our binding services include:

* Case binding* Perfect binding* Library binding * Fine leather binding * Legal journals * Medical journals * Handwritten books and poems * Signature books * Presentation books * Handmade slip cases

Binding and Finishing

Short Run Case Binding

We can undertake quantities from 1 to 1,000 books, whilst the high quality of work is maintained throughout every binding process:

* Cancellations and complicated tipping-in are easily catered for as all forwarding is carried out by hand. * Section sewn books are produced via hand fed, semi-automatic and automatic sewing machines, which allow bolted and cut head work to be sewn.* Book blocks are rounded and backed using a “Crawley” backing machine. The rounding and backing produced by this machine is unsurpassed by any other automated backing machine. * Cases ranging from 4” x 7” to 14” x 22” (102 x 180mm to 356 x 560mm) are producedusing our Kolbus casemaker. Case sizes falling outside these ranges are produced by hand. * We can foil block almost any design or layout required. Artwork and blocking dies can beproduced as required. Personalised lettering is also an option.

MailingThe Mail Piece:Our dedicated team of print experts may have already guided you through getting the mail piece exactly as you want it. If you have sourced it elsewhere, don’t worry, we can still mail it for you. However, if you get our team involved at an early stage, we can help ensure that you can get maximum postal discounts and that you get the right specification mail piece to work with Royal Mail’s Price in Proportion scheme.Envelopes:Once that has been decided, you next need to know whether you need paper envelopes or want to poly wrap the item with a flyer. At this point we can make suggestions regarding envelope/flyer design so that you can achieve maximum postal discounts – and yes, we can get these printed for you as well!Data:The next crucial element is the data that you mail to. If it is a subscribers list, we can run it through our postcode validation program to ensure that the address is 100% accurate. If you have purchased mailing lists, we can also append these and de-duplicate them based on your determined parameters to ensure that you are not needlessly printing and mailing items. We will also process the mail so that it conforms to the international standards for mailing to a given country and remove any obviously inaccurate addresses, correcting where possible.Postal Operator and Service:Finally, once all this has been done, you can choose your postal operator. We have international contracts with both Royal Mail and Swiss Post. For larger mailings we can do a profile mailing to utilise the various Direct Entry services that are available to us to further reduce costs. You can even choose to use other services for UK mail, with companies offering competitive rates on downstream access and a whole host of Royal Mail products to choose from.Mailing House:Hopefully, having got this far, you will realise that we are the best choice for the final, most important key element, the mailing house. We have 30 years experience of international mailing and still have our original customer! Our mailing team has achieved Royal Mail accreditations and has an excellent knowledge of what is possible and we have experienced people in all keys areas.

Warehousing and FulfilmentWarehousing & Fulfilment

Complementing the state-of-the-art digital printing resources which form the core of Berforts Group Ltd’s service offering, the picture is completed by a range of other services. With more need than ever to reduce fixed costs, Berforts Group Ltd offers customers the ideal solution - a complete package offering print production, warehousing and fulfilment.

Berforts Group Ltd has 45,000 square feet of warehouse space available for the storage of books, journals and other materials. Although our print-on-demand services should largely eliminate holding significant stocks of printed products, sometimes this is unavoidable. In addition to storing items for customers, books are routinely checked to ensure they are up to date and in mint condition. Loose-leaf books can be updated whilst in storage awaiting despatch.

Fulfilment services embrace the activities required to take the finished products through the process of picking and packing and onward delivery to our customers.

We use a combination of our own fleet of vans and the services of Royal Mail and specialist courier companies to deliver our customers orders worldwide. We also offer a range of priority delivery services for more urgent orders.

Using our print-on-demand technology urgent orders can be despatched within 24 hours of receipt of the order.
