Like many teachers in the late nineties, I

created my own web site for use in the

classroom. Unfortunately, it was a great

deal of work to add new content and

maintain the site on a daily basis!

Page 4: Beginning Moodle 2009

Even though the web site was very useful, it still lacked some important features…

Easy creation of content from my existing resources such as handouts and tests

Built-in tools for quick and easy content creation and management

Truly interactive learner involvement

Page 5: Beginning Moodle 2009

Even though the web site was very useful, it still lacked some important features…

Enrolment and learner authentication and tracking that was simple yet secure – I had no idea who was doing what at any given time

An intuitive interface to manage online learner information such as email addresses, phone numbers, and grades

Page 6: Beginning Moodle 2009

Even though the web site was very useful, it still lacked some important features…

A robust application proven to be secure, trustable, and affordable

An active support community to help me solve problems and generate new ideas

Then, one night at a party, someone told me about…

Moodle Architecture

Moodle was originally designedby an educator with a "socialconstructionist pedagogy" in mind.

Social constructionists assert thatlearning is particularly effective when students are constructing something for others to experience.

Moodle is a Course Management System (CMS) or Learner Management System (LMS).

An individual or organization has complete access to the source code and can make changes if needed.

Moodle’s modular

design makes it

easy to create

new courses,

adding content that

engages learners

on many levels.

Depending on how you choose to set up Moodle, all of your course materials are password-protected. This is an invaluable feature for those concerned with copyright law compliance!

Page 12: Beginning Moodle 2009

Let’s begin by creating a user account

at http://www.moodle.org

Page 13: Beginning Moodle 2009

Now, we need to establish your first

course space at moodle.cliu.org. You

must provide:

• Your building name

• Your name

• Your course name (only one for now)

• Your course number if applicable

• Your user name

However, they can

be a little

complicated to use!
