I was invited by Smart and Philippine Information Authority Region 6 (PIA-6) to give a talk to High School student journalists.

I presented blogging. Gave them some examples of high school blogs, good practices from Ateneo and Philippine Online Chronicles, and my own example of citizen journalism.

You've written lots of blogs. What is a topic in which you've earned more? - MJM, 15, F, Bacolod NHS

1.) Government services (NBI clearance, SSS contributions, passport renewal etc.)

2.) mobile services

How long have you been blogging? What made you start blogging? - CS, 15, F, BTTHS

Since 2005. I started blogging just because I wanted to express myself, share my thoughts. Back then, I didn't know that we can earn through blogs.

How has blogging changed your life? - ACGM, F, 15, Fellowship Baptist School, Binalbagan

1.) Being sent to South Africa for a conference -- all because I was discovered through the articles I wrote about mobile commerce

2.) People recognize me in conferences for my online persona: "Ka Edong" . Opportunities come to me because of blogging.

3.) I am able to express myself online and *influence* people's thinking -- it is their choice whether they will make a change in themselves ;-) .

4.) I was able to leave employment and manage my businesses. My income from blogging helped me make this change in career and lifestyle.

What can we do to popularize our blogs? - CJV, 13, F, Bacolod City, St. John's Institute

Publish your website everywhere: on your paper publication, in your posters, in stickers, in the signature of your email, signature in your forums, in your profile in facebook or other networks.

Promote your site via facebook, or via email blast (to your friends, alumni etc.)

What are the benefits I can get by making my own blog as a journalist? - CME, 16, F, Pontevedra National High School

I have a few blogger friends who have been invited to write a column on publications. If you want to become a journalist (offline), writing on a blog is a good way to gain exposure for future opportunities.

How would you earn money through blogging? - AMU, 15, F, Bacolod Tay Tung High School, Bacolod City

1.) I personally earn through Google Advertisements. Each time somebody clicks on a Google Ad on my website, Google pays me a few cents for that click. They send me money every month through Western Union.

2.) I also get paid for "text link ads". There are companies that are willing to pay good money to post their website's address on my website. They pay me at a range from $5-$20 per month.

3.) Other ways to earn from your blog: Affiliates ("commissions" from sales you referred), Pay-per-post (get paid to write about a product or service), Sell something online.

People often blogs discrimination and insulting stories about someone, but the fact is it is not true. How can we stop these bloggers? How can we change the mental perspective of these bloggers? - CGB, 15, Male, Bacolod City

You can change only yourself. By the change you make in yourself, you'll be able to *influence* other people, but it is their decision to make a change in themselves.

You can influence other people by writing in a positive way.

You can blog and offer alternative perspectives or opinions so that readers can weigh your article compared to the story of the other bloggers.

What are the advantages and disadvantages in blogging? - JMG, 16, F, Pontevedra National High School

I'll give context to this question by comparing blogging to paper-based school publications.

For paper-based school publications, you can distribute your content to people who do not use the web (e.g. some parents, grand parents). It's easy to keep for posterity.

For blogging, you're able to reach a wider audience. It includes your school's alumni in other countries. You're able to publish quickly via blogging compared to paper-based publications which may take a few weeks or months to publish.

Page 21: Basic blogging for student Journalists (Bacolod, Aug 25)

Does the blog follow the format of a news article? Can we freely express our thoughts in our blogs? - Sandy Ng, 16 & 3/4, F, Bacolod Tay Tung High School

If you're blogging as a representative of your school paper, you need to uphold journalistic standards similar to paper-based publications, and uphold the standards discussed by Atty Rose on ethics.

If you're blogging on a personal capacity, you can express your thoughts freely. I encourage you to express the positive perspectives. As for negative observations, there is a way to write these in a constructive way, for instance by giving suggestions/recommendations on how things can be improved.

How can blogging change the image of Filipinos after the hostage drama in Manila? – Ulysses D. Du Jr, 15, M, Sum-ag National High School

Awesome Question! Lets’ start with ourselves. Instead of ranting, how can we have a positive, constructive, contributing perspective on the situation? Write about it, make it matter, express what is in your heart and mind, be sincere. If you are able to write a message that is picked up by the global press, then you’ve made an impact. And even if your blog (or facebook note or tumblr story or tweet) is able to positively *influence* 1 or 2 people, then you have made a positive contribution to the Philippines.

Write, blog, express yourself. Be a positive contributor to our country and our world. I thank you! (bow)
