Origin of BadmintonBadminton dates back to the 5th Century BC where, as the Chinese game Ti Jian Zi(shuttlecock kicking), it was played with feet rather than the battledores (earlyrackets) of Ancient Greece and India. In the 1600s, the game of shuttlecock wasplayed by the British nobility, while on the mainland of Europe, it was known as jeude volant.

But the modern game won popularity with the British Army stationed in India in themid-19th Century. Army officers brought it home to England and, in 1873, the Dukeof Beaufort introduced the game to Royal society at his country estate, BadmintonHouse, in Gloucestershire - the county where the IBF has its headquarters. Withinfour years, Bath Badminton Club was founded and the version played by membersformed the basis for today's game and its rules.

Badminton TodaySince 1934, the sport has been run by the International Badminton Federation. Thenine founder members were Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland,Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales with Australia joining within twoyears. Apart from the war years, the IBF has since grown year by year to today's 138members including seven associate members.

The first major IBF tournament was the Thomas Cup men's world teamchampionships in 1948 but today's major events also include the women's Uber Cupequivalent, the World Championships, the Sudirman Cup world mixed teamchampionships, the World Junior Championships and the World Grand Prix Finals. For the last decade, China and Indonesia have set the standard with Denmarkleading the European challenge. Canada dominates in the Americas and Australia isat the forefront in Oceania.

Badminton at the Olympic GamesBadminton was a demonstration sport in Munich and an exhibition sport in Seoulbefore making its full debut at Barcelona in 1992 where there was a fairytale triumphfor Indonesia with the incomparable Susi Susanti and her boyfriend, Allan BudiKusuma, winning gold medals in the singles. Two gold medals in both doublesevents went to Korea.

In Atlanta four years later, mixed doubles was introduced and Korea produced bothfinalists. But the surprise challenge to Asian dominance came in the men's singleswhere Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen won the gold medal to herald the resurgence ofDenmark in the men's game. Korea added the women's singles gold to a mixeddoubles triumph, Indonesia claimed the men's doubles and China the women'sdoubles. As in Barcelona in 1992, China, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia and Denmarkshared the medals, reflecting the power bases in the world game.

Badminton in AustraliaBadminton is perfect for the Australian sporting image. It is played by both sexes andby all ages and, at the highest level requires strength, fitness and skill - the essenceof Australian sport at its best. No wonder Dennis Morgan, Olympic BadmintonManager for Sydney 2000, says: "There is an air of excitement about the Gamesbeing in Sydney. This will be the largest badminton event ever held in our country."

It follows another big badminton event because the World Junior Championshipswere successfully staged in Melbourne in the autumn of 1998 - an occasion whichmust surely have whetted everyone's appetite for the Olympic spectacle to come.

Australia has more than 8,000 registered players and Victoria is the strongest state, having won 11 Australian team titles between 1988 and 1998. At the 1997 SudirmanCup in Glasgow, the Australians attained a ranking of 16 in the world.

Australian players to watch for in Sydney are Peter Blackburn & David Bamford andMark Nichols & Murray Hocking in men's doubles, and Rhonda Cator & PeterBlackburn in mixed doubles.

Thanks to help from the Australian Government, Badminton Australia is able toemploy an Executive Director, Julia Phillips, and a national coach, Finn Traerup-Hansen from Denmark. He is based in Melbourne and is in charge of the nationalsquad as well as youth development, which shows the sport here is in good hands.
