Building Literacy using the Daily 5

We have just begun the Daily 5. This is the reading and writing program used in the classroom. The Daily 5 is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence. The children will be busy completing meaningful tasks during our literacy block. They include:

Read to Self

Right now, we are focusing on increasing our stamina to work independently during Read to Self. Within the next few months, the other choices will be introduced. While the students are completing their literacy tasks, I will be meeting with small groups and conferencing with individual students.

Behavior Plan

ClassDojo.com •allows me to track student behavior and learning skills throughout the day. •One of the great features of ClassDojo is that it allows me to send you a “behavior and skills report” every Friday by email. My hope is that this will help you better understand the progress of your child on a week-to-week basis.

How can you help your child learn?

• Read to your child every day – the single most important thing you can do to help him/her become a successful reader.

• Encourage young writers by asking them to tell you about their writing or drawing.

Page 16: Back2 schoolnight

• Prominently display their work – helps to create a sense of pride!

• Talk about the events of the day. - And finally…...

• Make sure your child gets enough sleep and eats a healthy breakfast each morning.

Questions, Concerns, Just Want to Talk??

There may be times when you feel you need to discuss your child with me. Well, I am very reachable! The Communication Folder that comes home every day with your child is one way. Put a note in it addressed to me and I will see it. I can also be reached by calling the school or via my email address: [email protected]. I promise to get back to you as soon as I am able. If there is anything you ever need to know right away, you may be able to find the answer on my teacher page which you can access through the school’s website by clicking on “Classroom Pages” and then choosing “Kindergarten A.”
