Jennella Porter Studley Elementary School ScholarshipJennella Porter was the Principal of Studley Elementary School for 13 years. This award is given, in honor of her dedication, to an Attleboro High School student who has achieved academic success and will continue their studies in the field of education. The recipient was a student at Studley during the tenure of Ms. Porter. Through this scholarship, it is hoped that the recipient will support and encourage other students in their academic endeavors.

Robert F. Perry Sr. Star Athlete, WWII Veteran

Robert Perry was raised in Attleboro, where he graduated from Attleboro High, class of 1943. After serving in the US Army Air Force during WWII, he received a Bachelor’s Degree from Boston University in 1950. “Bob” as he was affectionately known, was employed by the YMCA for 36 years. A Star Athlete, Mr. Perry was inducted into the AHS Hall of Fame. During his leisure time, he enjoyed golfing, bridge, and watching all sports.

This scholarship is offered by the Attleboro Democratic City Committee to a student who has proven to be an exemplary role model for many students with their participation in student and civic organizations. It is hoped that the recipient will continue to always promote our government and political process as an honorable institution and continue to engage in the democratic process.

Dave Allard Memorial Scholarship

The Dave Allard Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a senior that was a participant in

the DARE Challenge Bowl or DARE Student Excellence Award when they were in

grade 5 or 6.

Michael William Owens, Jr. Memorial ScholarshipMichael William Owens, Jr. was a member of the AHS Class of 2003. He was on the AHS Football Team and played semi-professionally for the So. West Florida Bob Cats. This scholarship is given to a member of the AHS Football Team to honor the memory of Michael and his legacy of integrity on and off the field.

Jenna Lee Holyoke Memorial ScholarshipJenna Lee Holyoke attended Attleboro High School and was a lifelong resident of Attleboro. Jenna had a wonderful spirit and enjoyed her many adventures with her friends and family. This scholarship is given to a student to honor the memory of Jenna in hopes that they will continue their education and find joy in all that they choose to do.

South Attleboro Lions Club Louis LaCivita Memorial Scholarship

The South Attleboro Lions Club Louis LaCivita Memorial Scholarship is awarded to two students who belonged to the Leo Club during their high school years. Also, a few years ago, the Lions Club renamed their scholarship to recognize a very special member, Louis LaCivita. Mr. LaCivita was a math teacher at AHS for 22 years. After he retired from teaching, he joined the Lions Club and provided countless hours of service to the community.

The South Attleboro Village Lions Club is made up of over 65 women from the Attleboro community who desire to make the community and the world a better place in which to live. Our many fundraisers help support Massachusetts Lions Eye Research, Diabetes research and camps, eye exams and eyeglasses for needy families, Christmas is for Kids program, public library Large Print book collection, DARE program, eyeglass and hearing aid recycling program, and a scholarship fund.The South Attleboro Village Lions Club is a proud co-sponsor of the Greater Attleboro Leo Club. We are very pleased to be able to award two book awards to members of the Leo Club who believe in the Lions International motto of "WE SERVE."

Richard Silva Memorial Scholarship

Mr. Richard F. Silva taught instrumental music in Attleboro from 1951-1967. He was Director of the Attleboro High School Band from 1951-1967 and of the Attleboro High School Orchestra from 1951-1963. In 1963, he was appointed Music Director. Mr. Silva was also clarinetist and conductor of the Attleboro Concert Band. Upon his death in 1967, the Attleboro Concert Band Scholarship was renamed the Richard Silva Memorial Award. This scholarship donation is given anonymously each year.

Captain Walter L. Heagney, Jr. M.S. Captain Walter L. Heagney, Jr. was an Attleboro native and was educated in the Attleboro school system. He served three years in the U.S Marine Corps as a Lance Corporal. He received a Bachelor Degree in law enforcement from Bryant College and pursued a Master’s Degree at Rhode Island College. Walter then went on to join the Attleboro Police Department for a total of 26 years. His friends and family decided to establish a scholarship in his memory for a deserving AHS student entering into the Law Enforcement profession.

Hewitt-Poncin Memorial Scholarship

Lawrence “Larry” Poncin and Bernard “Bernie” Hewitt were both born in Attleboro in 1950. Hewitt graduated from AHS in 1968 and Poncin in 1969. They then went on to get married and became life-long residents of Attleboro. It is hopeful that community donations and fundraisers will facilitate the awarding of this annual scholarship to a AHS graduating senior in perpetuity.

Sandy Devine Memorial ScholarshipThe Sandy Devine Memorial Scholarship has been established by her daughters, Betsy and Laura, to honor Sandy’s dedication to the children and community of Attleboro as a teacher for over 34 years. She was a graduate of Attleboro High School in 1972 and attended the University of Massachusetts. Sandy was one of those rare people who touched everyone she knew and found joy in every day. She made our community a better place through her volunteer services and her endearing smile. Sandy’s devoted friends and family support this scholarship and encourage the recipient to continue her legacy by making a difference in the lives of others.

AHS Class of 1952 Scholarship This scholarship was established by members of the AHS Class of 1952 to honor classmates who excelled in sports, academics, school organizations and community activities. This is awarded to a student who has accomplished these traits while a student at AHS and will strive to succeed in their endeavors to honor the spirit in which this was intended.

Zackary J. Marshall Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Paul and Diane Marshall to honor the memory of their son Zackary. Zackary was a member of the AHS Class of 2006. He attended Johnson & Wales University and majored in Criminal Justice. He was a devoted friend and family member who enjoyed his time spent with them. This award is intended for a student who will continue their education and demonstrate the character and qualities that “Zack” always represented.

Lavanya Reddy Memorial ScholarshipLali, as her friends and family called her, was a beautiful soul inside and out. Growing up, her innate interest and love to help those in need made her friends for life. She saw goodness in every person. Lali excelled in studies as a member of the AHS class of 1972. She attended RPI where she received her BS and MS in Biochemistry and Biophysics in 1976. She also received a MBA at Columbia University. This led to her career in Pharmaceutical and Genetics. Lali loved to travel, play the piano, and also enjoyed music, cooking and learning from people.

Ellen Theresa Wade Memorial ScholarshipShe was a proud member of the AHS Class of 1955 and the St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing Class of 1958. They were both the source of lifelong friendships and fond memories. She loved the nursing profession, which made it possible for her to provide for her family as a single mother and gave her great satisfaction of being able to help and make a difference in the lives of those she cared for. She would be honored to assist current students further their education and pursue their goal of becoming a nurse. We wish you much success and hope you find your career path to be as rewarding and enriching for you as it was for her.

Emmett Larkin Memorial Scholarship The Emmett Larkin fund was established in memory of long-time youth coach and Attleboro Recreation Commissioner, Emmett Larkin. Emmett was a passionate advocate for the youth of our community and donated his time, energy and resources to improving the quality of life for all of our youth. Through this fund, Emmitt’s commitment, generosity and spirit will live on, and the youth of our community will continue to benefit from his kindness and devotion.

Rachel Branagan Educational Foundation ScholarshipRachel was a bright and articulate seven year old with an insatiable appetite for learning. She had just started the third grade at Hyman Fine Elementary School in Attleboro when she lost her long battle with cancer in September of 2003. Rachel was an avid reader and talented writer and artist with her own unique eye on the world around her. Despite the daily

burdens of her illness and treatment, her curiosity and imagination were limitless. The legacy of this remarkable spirit comes in the form of a foundation established in Rachel’s honor. This foundation donates books and provides grants to public elementary schools in New England with the hope of sparking Rachel’s love of learning in another child and provides scholarships to students who demonstrate the creativity that Rachel expressed at such a young age.

Zachary Seidlitz Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established by the Seidlitz family to honor the memory of their son Zachary. Zachary was a member of the AHS Class of 2001 and was involved in the sports programs including hockey and baseball. This scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrated character and sportsmanship as Zach always did.

Parents for Attleboro High School Hockey- Zachary Seidlitz Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student who has played Hockey and has proven to be a team player on and off the field. This award is given in memory of Zachary Seidlitz who was a member of the AHS Hockey team. This scholarship is intended for a student who has demonstrated the character and sportsmanship for which Zach was known.

Myles Owen Brastow Memorial ScholarshipIn memory of Myles Owen Brastow -our 17 year old son/brother who was tragically killed in an accident on his way to school on Friday, September 24, 2010. He was a senior at Attleboro High School Class of 2011, a member of the hockey team and loved by everyone.To date - the MOB fund has given out $21,000 in scholarships, hosted breakfasts for the AHS Hockey Teams, sponsored children to play hockey, and assisted the City of Attleboro in creating an outdoor skating rink at Finberg Field for the use of the entire community.

Lynn C. Goodchild Memorial ScholarshipOn September 11, 2001, Lynn C. Goodchild tragically lost her life in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. Lynn graduated from Attleboro High School. She graduated from Bryant College with a business degree in 1998, and then worked at Putnam Investments. Since her death, Lynn's family, friends and her business colleagues have expressed a desire to honor her life and memory by promoting education and by assisting those who, because of financial restraints, may otherwise not be able to pursue the education that Lynn had worked so hard to obtain.

DOUBLEACS TV 15 and WARA Radio

DOUBLE ACS TV 15 and WARA Radio was incorporated in September of 2005 to provide cable access and access programs reflecting the activities, concerns and interests of the residents of Attleboro, to provide training in program production and on camera and editing equipment, and to maintain a high speed fiber infrastructure for all city buildings in Attleboro.

In Memory of Leo D. Fay, Jr. With a competitive spirit, dedication, and focus, Leo excelled as a student/athlete at AHS. To friends and relatives, he was loyal, reliable, and kind. As the consummate older brother, he was a mentor and role model. As a son, Leo was a source of pride and adoration to his parents. Despite the loss we feel in Leo’s passing, those whose lives he touched gain from his inspiring actions and his purity of heart.

Winifred D. Nelson Memorial ScholarshipWinifred Donnellan Nelson graduated from Emporia State Teachers College, where she majored in Education. She proudly served our country during WWII as a Specialist 3G in the US Navy Reserves (WAVES) from 1944-1946, where she taught aerial gunnery to pilots on the Naval Base in Pensacola, FL. This is where she met her husband and after the war they moved to Attleboro. She was also a charter member of the Theta Beta Chapter of the Alpha Phi Gamma International Society for more than 40 years. She served as the President of the Attleboro Branch Inc. of the American Association of University of Women. She spent 11 years on the Attleboro School Committee.

Hebronville Community Association Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2001 from the proceeds of the sale of Hebronville Community Association properties. It is intended to assist a resident of the Hebronville village in the expenses of pursuing a higher education.

AHS Class of 1950 Scholarship The Class of 1950, long remembered for its great athletic teams, on its fifteenth reunion, established a scholarship in perpetuity to help assist AHS graduates with their higher education expenses. This fund was made possible by the generous support received from the class members and individuals from all walks of life, who share a desire to help worthy graduates from AHS further their education.

W. Duane Lockard Memorial Scholarship Professor W. Duane Lockard, Professor Emeritus of Princeton University, and his wife Beverly were active members of the NAACP in the 1950s, actively supported the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, and fought bigotry all their lives. He attended the University of West Virginia, where he met Beverly. In 1942, Mr. Lockard left college and volunteered for the Air Force, becoming a carrier pilot stationed in England. On D-Day, he flew several planeloads of paratroopers into St. Mere Eglise. He flew 105 combat hours in all, including in the Battles of the Bulge, Holland, and the Rhine. At the end of the war, he flew many planeloads of POWs and concentration camp survivors home to safety. He attended Yale University on the GI bill and earned a Ph.D. in political science. He taught at Connecticut College in New London until 1961, when he went to Princeton University, where he remained until retirement.

Kimberly Lima-Ritacco Memorial ScholarshipKimberly Lima-Ritacco was the oldest of Bill and Kathy’s three daughters. A 1991 graduate from RIC with both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, Kim found great reward working as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Married to Anthony for almost 15 years, they shared one son. Lukas was by far her proudest accomplishment.

Kim was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, bile duct cancer, in January 2016 and bravely fought for 2 years before passing at the age of 44. Kim treasured time with her family. She was an avid basketball fan, serving as captain of her AHS team. This scholarship was established through the proceeds of a golf tournament in her memory.

Hub International New England, LLC Scholarship

This scholarship is being offered to an Attleboro High School student who plans to continue their studies in the business field. They have demonstrated their ability through academics and their understanding of the importance of an education in business to succeed in their future endeavors.

Jenny Lesperance Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established by the family of Jenny Lesperance to honor her loving memory. Jenny graduated from Attleboro High School in 1999 and was co-captain of the AHS Field Hockey and Tennis teams. She continued her education at Bryant University until the diagnosis of Leukemia. One of Jenny’s last quotes was, “Live so that your memories will be a part of your happiness.” It is hoped that the recipient will create wonderful successes and memories so that they can look back with great joy.

Fred W. Thomson Athletic ScholarshipFred W. Thomson (1932-1997) was an Attleboro native who was educated in Attleboro Schools. He was a three-sport athlete and was awarded eight varsity letters during his career at AHS. Voted the best male athlete in the Class of 1950, he was a charter member of the Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame and a member of the AHS Athletic Hall of Fame. Fred maintained his love for AHS teams, supporting them regularly. He was respected and admired by everyone he met. His wife, Tina, and family established this scholarship in his memory.

Ray Conniff Memorial ScholarshipFrom his beginnings as a trombonist and arranger during the heyday of swing, working with Bunny Berigan, Bob Crosby and Artie Shaw as the leader of his own band, Ray Conniff was among the few musicians to have a successful career that spanned 65 years. He recorded over 100 albums and sold over 70 million albums. He was the proud recipient of a Grammy award for his recording of “Somewhere My Love”, two Grammy nominations, over 10 gold albums, multiple platinum albums, and countless international awards. His catalogue surpassed those of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin! He was best known for his signature sounds such as “The Ray Conniff Orchestra and Singers.”

Samantha Brasil Family Memorial Scholarship

Samantha Brasil was a girl who was full of life. She was a beautiful, caring, happy, and intelligent young lady with a big heart. She wrote poetry and was a folkloric Portuguese dancer. She was also a member of the AHS softball team. Samantha wanted to be proud of herself by accomplishing her goals in life. Samantha believed “Life is what you make of it.”

Brennan Middle School ScholarshipThis scholarship is awarded to an AHS student who attended Brennan Middle School. The recipient of this award is chosen by the faculty at Brennan Middle School for demonstrating a desire to learn, contributing to the classroom and showing compassion to other classmates. We know you will continue to make a difference at the college you select and where ever you go in the future.

Keith Rooks Memorial Scholarship Keith was a member of the Attleboro Blue Bombardiers boy’s gymnastic team. He competed in States all four years and was captain of the team. He still holds the title for the highest score in vaulting. He received a gymnastics scholarship to Brigham Young University and transferred to the University of Iowa. As an NCAA Championship gymnast, he placed in the vault several times. He was a member of the Patriots Cheer squad and was a cheer instructor with the United Spirit Association. In 1990, Keith joined the Bud Light Daredevils basketball team. He traveled the world, performing at every NBA arena. He moved to Southern California and his beloved Hermosa Beach, where he married Cecilia and became Dad to Hayden. This Scholarship is offered by Keith’s family to AHS students who demonstrate the same dedication to gymnastics and will honor his memory.

The Attleboro Educational Clerical Association Book Award is given to students pursuing a degree in business and or children of members of the Clerical Association.

Thomas J. Carroll Memorial ScholarshipThe Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #30 presents the Thomas J. Carroll Memorial Scholarship to a graduating senior of Attleboro High School whose studies will be in Social Services or Criminal Justice. As an employee of the Department of Social Services and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Tom sought justice for countless children in the State of Massachusetts and beyond. As a Child Abuse Investigator for the DA’s Office for three decades, Tom worked tirelessly to protect children while investigating some of the most heinous & notorious child abuse cases in Bristol County. Tom is remembered for his determination, work ethic, sense of humor and dedication to his family, friends and colleagues.

D. A. R. EDNA BUTTERWORTH WOOD SCHOLARSHIP Mrs. Edna ButterWorth Wood was born in Attleboro, in 1903. She was educated in the Attleboro Schools and graduated from High School in 1920. The following September, she entered Bridgewater Normal School, now Bridgewater State College. Her first teaching position was in Attleboro at Richardson School where she taught successfully for several years, then joined the Wellesley system where she remained until her marriage to Peter Preston Wood of Buffalo, November 23, 1935. Mr. and Mrs. Wood lived in Pittsburgh for a few years, then moved to Indianapolis where she took courses in Education at the University to prepare for a teaching position. Mrs. Wood became a member of the Attleboro Chapter of the D. A. R. in 1946. Mr. Wood sold his business in Indianapolis and he and Mrs. Wood returned to live in Attleboro. Her husband died in 1960 and once more Mrs. Wood went back to the profession she loved, teaching. Mrs. Wood was at one time Treasurer of the D. A. R. and became Regent during 1970- 1971. It is fitting that the Attleboro Chapter gives this Scholarship in Mrs. Wood's name, as she was a dedicated teacher and devoted member of the D. A. R.

DAR Jane E. Nerney Excellence in History Prize

One of the objectives of the DAR is to promote the preservation of US History. This prize goes to a student who excels in US History.

Sodexo Education Services Scholarship

Sodexo has been providing facilities management services to the Attleboro Public Schools for the past 20 years and is proud to provide scholarships to graduating seniors.

Joseph A. Rodrigues Memorial Scholarship This is awarded in memory of Joseph Rodrigues, who lost his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer in 2015 at the age of 46. Joe graduated from AHS in 1987 and went on to Johnson & Wales University where he earned a culinary degree. He loved his job and his co-workers at Morin’s Catering, where he worked for over 30 years. Joe was a giant of a man, kind-hearted, compassionate, and loving. He always made you feel good about yourself. He loved life and lived every day to the fullest. He had a resounding laugh and a smile that made you feel loved. His love of life was surpassed only by the love Joe had for his family and friends. He was admired for the way he lived his life but more so for the way he made us all feel. It is our wish that the recipients of this scholarship live their lives as Joe lived his. Be passionate about what you do, laugh and love often and above all, be kind to everyone.

Sean Buckley Memorial ScholarshipSean was a 1985 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a 1979 graduate of Bishop Feehan. He passed away in 1988 at the age of 27 after a long battle with cancer. Sean's spirit, courage and zest for life was the inspiration behind his family and friends who established this scholarship in his memory in 1990. The scholarship recipient is a student chosen from the Attleboro area High Schools who will be attending UMass Dartmouth. This student also should display the traits associated with Sean, including overcoming adversity and hardship at a young age.

Rebeckha Lynn Whitefield Memorial ScholarshipThe Rebeckha Lynn Whitefield Foundation was established in Rebeckha’s memory for the sole purpose of supporting the youth of the Greater Attleboro area as well as youth organizations within the community. Rebeckha tragically lost her life in 2008 as a result of an automobile accident. She was a junior at Attleboro High School, where she was a member of the Varsity Field Hockey and Track programs. Throughout the years, she participated in many of Attleboro’s youth programs and was an accomplished Western Equestrian rider. Becky, as her family

and friends so affectionately call her, touched an unbelievable amount of lives. By creating this non-profit entity, we are able to preserve Becky’s legacy. In 10 years, the foundation has provided financial support of over $480,000 to programs, organizations, and families in the greater Attleboro area.

Attleboro White Hawks Blais/Roberge Scholarship

The award is named after the founders of the SAWH football organization, Mr. Blais and Brett Roberge, a former player for the organization who died in a car accident in September of 1999 at the age of 18. Two awards are given to a former player and/ or cheerleader from the White Hawks organization. Students write a 350 word essay explaining how the South Attleboro White Hawks helped them be the person they are today and will strive to be in the future.

This scholarship is usually awarded to a student who has been involved in the Attleboro Pop Warner/White Hawks Cheerleading Program over the past years. She never missed a game, practice or competition, as her children were involved in the sports programs at the high school.

Jack Strachan Memorial ScholarshipOn October 22, 2000, North Attleboro lost a wonderful person

named Jack Strachan. Words cannot describe the type of man Jack was. He was intelligent and loving but had a commanding presence. Jack was the father of six and was married for 40 years; family was his number one priority and North Attleboro was his home.

Jack loved to study history and loved to read all types of books. Jack loved football and basketball. He was involved in the creation of the North Attleboro Gridiron Club as well as Pop Warner Coach. Jack was a true New England Patriots fan. He never missed a game even from the early beginnings at Nickerson Field. He got his season tickets when they were playing at Fenway Park, and was one of the 170 fans in the stands when Mr. Sullivan changed the name from The Boston Patriots to The New England Patriots.

In 2010, the Strachan family started a Scholarship fund in Jack’s name to reward deserving High School seniors for their four years of hard work.

Steve Goretti Memorial ScholarshipWhile at AHS, Steve Goretti achieved success in academics, visual arts, and athletics. In sports, he was a two-year starting shortstop for the baseball team and during his senior year was also the starting point guard for the basketball team. Steve graduated from AHS in 1981. He studied at Tufts University and earned a degree in Computer Science. On September 27, 2001, Steve succumbed to colon cancer after a very short, but incredibly courageous, eight-week fight against the disease. Steve was a loving father and husband who touched the lives of many people around him. This scholarship was created to celebrate Steve’s life and accomplishments by annually recognizing a fellow AHS graduate who displays similar character, intelligence, academic prowess, athletic ability, and achievement on the AHS baseball squad that Steve was so proud to be a member of for four years. We hope the recipient will be as honored to be associated with Steve Goretti’s name as we are proud to be his family and friends.

Victor J. Gulino Memorial Scholarship

Victor opened and operated the Victor J. Gulino Insurance Agency from 1965-1990. The Agency’s motto was “where service is the policy.” This also epitomized his life.

Vic was proud to lead the AHS football team as co-captain with John Lepper. He was proud of his children, Greg, Karen, Marcie, and nieces and nephews who benefited from their AHS education.

James & Phyllis Lee Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame Memorial Scholarship

James H. “Jim” “Shorty” Lee was a member of the AHS class of 1940. He excelled in athletics including football, basketball, and baseball. He was inducted into both the Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame and the AHS Athletic Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in founding the Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame in 1971. James was a valuable member of many community organizations.

Phyllis was the most sought after volunteer, Brownie/Girl Scout Leader, substitute teacher at Farmers School, and Sturdy Memorial Hospital. Her smile would light up the room and her kindness made everyone feel welcome and relaxed.

The Lee family has established this scholarship in his memory to honor his dedication on the football field as Player #31, his commitment to our community, and his enthusiasm for life.

Charles P. Cokonis Memorial Scholarship

Charles P. Cokonis served in the Attleboro School System for thirty-five years, beginning as a science teacher at Peter Thacher Middle School in 1957. After serving as a teacher and guidance counselor at Thacher, he was named principal of the South Attleboro Middle School (Coelho) in 1965. Mr. Cokonis led that school in a distinguished manner for twenty-six years until his retirement in 1992. This scholarship was created in his honor after his untimely death in 1996. The award will be made each year to an Attleboro High School graduate who attended Coelho Middle School and excelled in the areas of academic achievement and school citizenship.

Joseph Finberg ScholarshipJoseph Finberg was a well-known jewelry maker in Attleboro during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. In 1898, Mr. Finberg established his own company called Joseph Finberg & Co. on 140 Park Street. Mr. Finberg held many leadership positions within Attleboro, including serving as the director of the Jewelry Trade Board, YMCA, Sturdy Memorial Hospital. Joseph Finberg also established Camp Finberg, that he later turned over to the YMCA. When he passed away, he left millions of dollars to local organizations.

Richard Sweet was a native of Attleboro who helped found Howard H. Sweet and Son, Inc., a precious metal jewelry manufacturing company in Attleboro in 1955. When he passed away in

Armand Bessette Memorial Scholarship

Armand Bessette taught in Junior High in South Attleboro from 1956- 1962. He became a teacher of English at Attleboro High School in September of 1962. Mr. Bessette was appointed department

chairman September 1965. He served in that capacity until his death in February 1973.

Students, teachers and friends established this scholarship in his memory. It is usually awarded to

a student who attains a high average in English.

Arthur Boulay Chartier Memorial Scholarship

Arthur Boulay Chartier (1900 - 1985) was educated in the Attleboro Schools and attended Colby-Sawyer

College and Boston University. He worked for the Uptown Garage, Boston, and was the

treasurer/founder of the Checker Taxi Credit Union in Boston. Though he lived in the Greater Boston

area all of his adult life, Mr. Chartier maintained his love for Attleboro and his interest in the students of Attleboro High School. His wife, who discovered and

appreciated Attleboro through her husband's continued association with the city, established this

scholarship in his memory.

Dr. Adolph Bender Memorial Scholarship

Dr. Bender was born March 21, 1917 in New Bedford, MA. He graduated from Beacon Institute of Podiatry in Boston, MA. He also attended and earned two degrees in Surgical Chiropody and Podiatric Medicine from Temple University School of Chiropody, Philadelphia, PA.. Dr. Bender served five years in the United States Army. Upon his discharge from the military he returned to Attleboro and began his podiatry practice. He was very interested in the youth of

Attleboro. Dr. Bender became very involved in the Attleboro Little League, Pony League, Scouting and

Basketball. Education was always foremost in his mind. Dr. Bender ran for a seat on the Attleboro School Committee to show his commitment to Attleboro and the young people.

He served on the board for twenty years. He is fondly remembered for his frequently voiced phrase, "The children

James W. Butler Memorial Scholarship James W. Butler graduated from Attleboro High School

in 1985. He was awarded the Roland-G. Lindgren Memorial Scholarship for his outstanding achievement

in the Machine Shop Program. Jim attended Community College of Rhode Island and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Throughout high school and

college he worked two jobs in order to buy the tools he needed for his career as a toolmaker. After working in the Attleboro area, Jim moved to Florida. At the time

of his tragic death, he was a highly respected toolmaker at Sun Microstamping. The corporate

officers and Jim's fellow employees established this scholarship in his name.

Theta Beta Scholarship

Theta Beta is a chapter of the Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority. This international Sorority was founded in 1920 by five women and is dedicated to friendship, love, and serving the community. There

are currently 3,577 active members in 131 Chapters over the United States and Canada. Theta Beta Chapter was founded

around 1949 in Attleboro and has been active since then in the community. They have sponsored a scholarship at Attleboro High

School for over 10 years. They are committed to help young women advance their education and succeed in life. Gladys

Rotenberg a past Attleboro High School educator was instrumental in assisting in this endeavor. Her love for her

students will make a forever impact as we hope our scholarship will continue to do as well.

Established in 1999 by Honey Dew Donuts® founder Richard J. Bowen, this helps local high school seniors and their parents offset the cost of college. Proceeds for the Honey Dew Donuts Scholarship Fund are raised through the company’s annual Golf Invitational in September where contributions are donated by friends and affiliates. Dana Gagne was a 1986 graduate of AHS. While in school he was an active in Student Council, committees, and student government, but sports were his main interest. From the time he was a little tike with a broom and a milk crate until the day he died, he loved hockey. Dana died suddenly while playing his favorite sport, ice hockey. He was 32.

where he played football. Bill then became the Ward 4 City Councilor. His friends and family created this scholarship to assist an Attleboro

student who has been as active member of the community in a consistent and reliable way.

Susan M. Kalo-Finn Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established to honor the memory and achievements of Susan M. Kalo-Finn, a graduate of AHS, class of 1989. Susan graduated from Fordham University in 1993, and then from Simmons College with a Masters Degree in 1998. Susan was employed by the MA Department of Social Services for 3 years. Then became a social worker and transitioned from social work to become a Child Protective Investigator. Susan passed away in 2012 after a long battle with cancer. This scholarship was established to aid a student of AHS who is considering pursuing a career in social services, psychology, or a health field.

Gladys Rotenberg Memorial Scholarship Gladys Rotenberg was a teacher for over 62 years until the age of 84 and left her mark on generations of Attleboro High School students. As a member of many community organizations, she was a valued supporter of Attleboro. Gladys left a loving, positive and enduring impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Robert & Doris Burch Memorial ScholarshipRobert Burch was a resident of Attleboro for almost 50 years. He was ever the gentlemen and devoted many hours to his love of woodworking creating finely crafted furniture. His wife, Doris was a dedicated teacher for the Attleboro School System for 25 years. It is in this spirit that this scholarship is offered in memory of Doris and “Jack” Burch in the hopes that their pride in education and outstanding character will continue to encourage future students.

The Attleboro Lions Club Scholarship

The Attleboro Lions Club has made gifts to charitable causes, one of its principle activities from its earliest years. From 1923 to 1935 the Lions Club was the only service club in Attleboro. The club gives to established annual funds including the United Way and the Attleboro Scholarship foundation. It, also, gives to special drives such as those of Sturdy Memorial Hospital and the YMCA.

Marlene Mills Memorial Scholarship Marlene Mills, given the nickname “McGruff”, had been a resident of School Street since 1980. Marlene was not only a devoted wife and mother of two, a little league mother, and a driver and volunteer for the Attleboro Head Start Program, but was concerned about making the East Side Park and neighborhood safe for children to play.

Robert J. & Shirley A. Coelho Memorial Scholarship

Robert was dedicated to the profession of education. He began his career in Attleboro as a teacher and became the principal of Brennan Jr.

High School in 1962. In 1965 he became the Assistant Superintendent of the schools and in 1969 he was named the Superintendent of APS. He held this position for 13 years. South Attleboro Middle School was

renamed the Robert J. Coelho Middle School in honor of all of his years of dedication to the educational system in Attleboro. His wife, Shirley

was the Attleboro District office manager for U.S. Congressman Barney Frank and also for Jim McGovern and dedicated over 23 years of service

to the citizens of Attleboro. She was also a member of New Hope and served as President of the board in the hopes of educating and

eradicating domestic violence in the community. This scholarship is offered in memory of Robert & Shirley in the hopes that their pride in education and community will continue to encourage future students.

Attleboro Firefighters- Local 848 The Attleboro Firefighters established this scholarship to provide financial assistance to students with an affiliation to the Attleboro Fire Department- during their first year of college. Richard C. and Priscilla A. Fuller Scholarship

Many have made important contributions to the successful accomplishment of the mission of Attleboro Scholarship Foundation over the years. However, we believe it is fair to say that the contributions of no other combination of two people approaches that of Dick and Priscilla. For many years the scholarship foundation was a room in their house. They were the heart of the foundation and kept its spirit alive along the years.

This scholarship was established by a bequest of William R. Flynn. It was his wish that this award be given to “a worthy student who excelled in athletics and is going on to higher education.” William’s family has maintained their interest in the athletic events at AHS and supports all of the programs. The recipient chosen will honor the memory and character of William Flynn.

Curtis Stanley Gallup Memorial Scholarship

Curtis Stanley Gallup was born in Attleboro and was a graduate of AHS class of 1920. Mr. Gallup

became skilled in operating Morse code Equipment. He was employed as a wireless

operator on a freighter, transporting chemicals between Eastern and South American ports. In his retirement, he spent endless hours at the Boston

Public Library in his relentless search for knowledge. This scholarship is awarded in honor of Mr. Gallup in the hopes that it will enable each student to achieve their dream of an education.

AHS Class of 1947 Scholarship

The Class of 1947 scholarship was conceived as a memorial for two dear

deceased classmates. The concept of the memorial scholarship was expanded to

include all classmates and special friends of 1947.

William F. Dentch Memorial Scholarship Bill taught physics and science at

AHS for 34 years. He was also involved in coaching for more than 20 years. Bill coached the boys and girls varsity swim teams at AHS as well as starting and coaching the

Attleboro Blue Fish Swim Club. The Eastern Massachusetts

Interscholastic League honored Bill as coach of the year. The William F. Dentch M. S. is meant for deserving students who have been members

of the AHS swim team and have demonstrated academic

achievement and good citizenship.

Doris B. Durfee Memorial Scholarship

Doris Durfee was an AHS graduate of the Class of 1925. She received her Nursing Degree from Boston University and spent her professional years at Rhode Island Hospital as Director of Clinical Services. She was an extremely caring woman who thoroughly loved life with her family and friends. This book scholarship is presented to an AHS student who is entering the nursing field, in hopes that they will devote as much compassion to the field as Doris did.

Ida Tufts Memorial Scholarship Ida Tufts was a lifelong resident of Attleboro and was alumnus of Attleboro High School. She had owned and operated a store in Attleboro for many years before she retired in 1978. Ida Tufts, a women of high moral character, was active in the community and was always committed to the welfare of others. The recipient of this scholarship has demonstrated these qualities while achieving academic excellence and has been selected to honor the memory of Ida Tufts.

Stephen Henderson Memorial Scholarship

Stephen Henderson was a very gifted music student who played five musical instruments. He graduated from AHS in 1974. His plan was to attend the Berklee College of Music but was struck by an automobile that summer. With the assistance of Mr. Smudsky, who was the music director, Mrs. Henderson organized two outdoor rock concerts that summer, using the proceeds to establish the Stephen Henderson M. S. for a student who would study music.

Hyman Fine Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1973 by the Fine family. Preference is given to students who are planning careers in agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry or others that will impact the environment in a positive way. William “Red” Madden Memorial Scholarship

William “Red” Madden had a love of athletics which led to his being a three sport athlete and captain of his football team at Attleboro High

School. Red also had a gift for coaxing scholastic and athletic excellence out of the students of

Attleboro. In over 30 years of teaching, coaching, counseling and serving as Athletic Director for the

City of Attleboro, he helped countless students reach and surpass their goals. It is in this spirit that the friends and family of Bill Madden offer

Marcia Nittel Memorial Scholarship Marcia Nittel graduated from Attleboro High

School in 1970. She received her BS in Biology from St. Lawrence University and her MBA from New York University. She then went on to work

on as a marine biologist on the Hudson River Project, and then at IBM where she held several positions. The opportunity to attend college is a

privilege. A proper blend of hard work, relaxation and new friendships provides an atmosphere

conducive to setting and achieving your goals, and making a difference in the world of which you are

Emilio Scaldini Memorial ScholarshipMel Scaldini became a Building Commissioner in 1984. He believed that being a building official was an important job in the public sector and was a strong advocate of continuing education for Building Officials. As president of the South Eastern Building Officials Association he took the lead when issues arose, helped change how we look at ourselves as Building Officials, and reminded us of how people should be treated. This scholarship was created as a tribute to Mel Scaldini, who passed away in 1997, for his many accomplishments as a well-respected Building Official.

Helen E.B. Bromley Memorial Scholarship

The fund that honors Mrs. Bromley, a 67-year resident of South Attleboro, was established by an anonymous donor who had known her for 40 years, recalling Mrs. Bromley as “a brilliant, gracious and loving lady who was unique and innovative”. In the 102 years she lived, she was a teacher, a girl scout leader and camp director, and a businesswoman.

Stephen H. Sullivan Memorial Scholarship

Stephen Sullivan was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts and graduated from New Bedford

High School in 1931. He was employed as a salesman for a wholesale paper company prior to entering the United States Army in 1942. He was then discharged

in 1946 to work as an interviewer for the Massachusetts Division of Employment Security. He

continued to work there until his retirement in 1984. This scholarship was established in the year 2000 in

his memory by his sister, Molly Sullivan.

Anthony D. Phung Memorial Scholarship

Anthony Phung was born on June 2, 1980, in California. He grew up in Attleboro and

attended Willett Elementary and Brennan Middle School. Anthony was a excellent

student who consistently made the honor roll. He was a natural athlete, good at any sport he tried. Anthony was a freshman at Attleboro High School when he died on April 20, 1995, of myelodysplasia, six weeks before his 15th

birthday.

Jeraline N. Nerney Memorial Scholarship Jeraline Nerney was the librarian at Attleboro High School for more than 20 years and retired in 1991. She passed away unexpectedly from a massive cerebral stroke in her home in December of 1999. Jeraline loved cats, she loved to garden, she loved to read and she loved to GIVE. Jeraline listened with her ears and gave with her heart. This scholarship was established to continue giving in the spirit that Miss Nerney has taught many of us. Congratulations and good luck!

Since 1976, the Lloyd G. Balfour foundation has been providing scholarship support to the children and grandchildren of the former Balfour Company employees.
