A Commitment to Quality

AESC members comprise an elite group of top tier retained executive search firms. All members agree to abide by the Association’s Code of Ethics and Professional Practice Guidelines and meet strict membership criteria.

Selection into AESC membership is the only form of quality accreditation that exists for retained executive search consulting. Many leading organizations such as Bank of America, IBM, and the Red Cross, now require that search consultants under their employ should either be AESC members or at least formally commit to the AESC standards of Ethics and Professional Practice.

Representing Executive Search

AESC works to raise the profile of its members and of retained executive search to the client and candidate communities. The association represents and protects the interest of the profession worldwide on issues such as data privacy, state licensing, and employment laws.

A Worldwide Professional Community

AESC Membership includes many of the leading large, medium and boutique retained executive search consulting firms around the world, with offices in more than 70 countries.

AESC MEMBERSHIP

“The AESC sets standards which define the values of our profession. We are proud to belong to an association which stands for and promotes the highest level of client service embodied in its Code of Ethics and Professional Practice Guidelines.”

David S. Daniel, CEO, Spencer Stuart

Commitment to worldwide professional and ethical standards is of the utmost importance in the modern global marketplace.

The role of the AESC is increasingly important in this regard, as we seek to uphold and promote the highest possible standards in the profession of retained executive search.

AESC membership is the only form of official differentiation that exists for top quality retained executive search firms within the recruiting industry.

Global Community

AESC membership is a global community, with member firms in more than 70 countries around the world. The association is based in New York City, with a European office in Brussels. Governing Councils include the Americas; Europe, Middle East, and Africa; and Asia Pacific. There is a Board of Directors overseeing the Councils.

Conferences and Events

Events such as the annual North American and European member conferences provide opportunities for networking and discussion as well as illuminating presentations and panel discussions from industry thought leaders. Smaller events such as the Researchers and Associates Summit and Small Firms Forum provide similar opportunities in a more focused environment for smaller communities of interest.

AESC COMMUNITY

Small Firms Forum

A community of interest for smaller firms within AESC membership, the forum consists of face-to-face gatherings around the world, telephone conference calls, and interactive e-newsletters. There is discussion of best practice and collation of data and information that can be shared. Many AESC members who participate in the Small Firms Forum cite it as the most important benefit of membership. As the forum increases in depth and expands around the globe it becomes even more valuable as a source of information, best practice and a business development tool.

Topics of discussion include:

• The structure and management of the firm• Risk mitigation• Equity/partnership arrangements• Exit/sale strategies• Compensation schemes • Recruitment and retention of staff• Professional standards and ethical issues

• Standard agreements and terms of doing business

• The competitive marketplace• Improving presentation and marketing

skills• Technology solutions• Diversification• Performance metrics

The program is chaired by a Council Member and is defined by common consent.

Researchers Networking Group

The AESC recognizes the challenges that many researchers face as they perform the research function. To address the needs of this important group of executive search professionals, the AESC has created the Researchers Networking Group. An online forum linking over 1,100 researchers and associates worldwide, the RNG is a highly successful community of interest which gives researchers a venue to discuss important research topics, and share their views and knowledge on research tools and best practices.

Recent topics of discussion included:

• Secrets of getting past the gatekeeper• Advantages / disadvantages of using online

job boards• Recommendations on background checking

firms• Finding the top 20 direct marketing agencies

• Helpful websites for research• Transitioning from a pure research role to a

consultant / associate role• Effective protocols for handling unsolicited

resumes• Developing a resource center for members

Researchers Summit

The strength of the Researchers Networking Group led to Researchers Summits held in New York and London. They focused on topics such as Business Development, Knowledge Management and Research Tools.

AESC SERVICES

SEARCHCONNECT and SEARCHALERT

SearchConnect

AESC is building important connections with the corporate community to promote the value of working with AESC member firms. Member firms receive exposure to new clients via SearchConnect, the online directory of AESC members. Firms list their functional, industry and geographic specialties and list as many of their consultants as they wish. Members of the corporate community can search the AESC member firms by any combination of criteria and view each firm’s AESC profile.

SearchAlert

The AESC Referral Service, SearchAlert, enables potential client companies to fill out an RFP (request for proposal) for a particular hiring assignment. RFPs that match a firm’s industry, functional and geographic specialties will be sent directly to the firm for consideration. This is an anonymous matching process –the firm makes the final determination to respond to the company posting the RFP. Our client communication strategy, which is increasing the AESC’s visibility within the corporate community, has resulted in a record number of RFPs submitted in 2005 and subsequent retention of AESC member firms.

BlueSteps

An online candidate database offered exclusively and free to AESC members.

Fast Growing Database of High-Level Executives

BlueSteps is the largest global online community of senior executives looking to stay current in the career marketplace. As a service of the AESC, BlueSteps enables executives to remain exclusively accessible to its member firms. Over 26,000 senior executives, with an average salary of $220,000, are listed in the database. Executives from all over the world are represented.

Manage Unsolicited Resumes

BlueSteps is also a great tool for managing unsolicited resumes as well as an additional resource in the initial candidate and source identification process. Members have free and unlimited access to executives who register, without incurring the time or administrative costs of maintaining the data in-house. Executives log in regularly to keep their data current. AESC members can use BlueSteps to:

• search the database for executives who meet the criteria of a position.• send targeted position descriptions out to executives meeting specific criteria to gauge interest.

LEGISLATIVE & LEGAL INITIATIVES

AESC is acknowledged as the representative body for the retained executive search profession by the US Government and the European Commission, and regularly monitors legislation that can affect executive search, including data privacy, state licensing and employment laws.

Industry Classification of Executive Search Consulting

The AESC was successful in advising the US Department of Labor on a revision to the SIC Codes which led to reclassification of Executive Search Consulting from “Employment Agencies” to becoming a specific sub-category under “Management Consulting”. This has important and positive implications relating to licensing and taxation issues.

The AESC is now investigating other jurisdictions, around the world, to ensure that retained executive search is correctly classified under management consulting and not grouped with other recruiting services which require different skills, professional standards and ethics.

Legitimacy of Executive Search

In some countries Executive Search is still not fully accepted by governments as a legitimate and important professional service in the modern economy. Examples include the Republic of China where, although restrictions are now easing, there are still significant inhibitions to the free practice of Executive Search. The AESC, through the involvement of its members in these markets, is striving to ensure that executive search becomes recognized as a valuable service and is accorded proper status as a valid management consulting process.

Data Privacy

The AESC monitors worldwide developments in Data Privacy legislation and their impact on executive search. AESC Europe has been in negotiations with the EU Commission since 2000 to develop a Code of Conduct that will achieve consistent compliance with the EU Data Privacy Directive but also enable executive search to function without significant inhibition.

Legal Challenges

From time to time the AESC will advise on lawsuits involving AESC member firms where an issue of common practice arises. Recent cases have involved a lawsuit for tortious interference with a contract of employment against a member firm in the USA, and an action against search firms in Germany for contacting potential candidates while at their place of work. In both cases the AESC followed the lawsuits carefully and was ready to provide assistance as appropriate. This may have involved amicus briefs and a petition to the European Court.

“As governments around the world tighten their data security laws, no individual firm can hope to keep abreast of the requirements nor to represent its views in a significant manner alone.”
