    INDIA ASEAN RELATION

    Since its start about a decade ago, the partnershipbetween India and the ASEAN nation has beendeveloping at quite a fast pace.

    India became a sectoral dialogue partner of ASEAN in1992. Mutual interest led ASEAN to invite India tobecome its full dialogue partner during the fifth ASEANSummit in Bangkok in 1995.

    In August 2009, India signed a Free Trade Agreement(FTA) with the ASEAN members in Thailand.

    India and ASEAN are currently negotiating agreementson trade in services and investment

    In 2008-09, India's exports to ASEAN totalled US$19.14 billion & imported goods worth US$ 26.3billion in 2008-09 from ASEAN.

    To further enhance tourism collaboration betweenASEAN and India through concrete activities,during the 3rd ATM+India held on 12 January2012 in Manado, Indonesia, the ASEAN and IndiaTourism Ministers signed the Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MoU) between ASEAN and India

    on Strengthening Tourism Cooperation, whichwould serve as the key instrument for more action-oriented cooperation, encouraging both parties tocooperate in facilitating travel and tourist visits andfurther strengthen the close tourism partnership.

    INTRODUCTION

    1952: The basis of the EU began with the signing of theTreaty of Paris, establishing the European Coal andSteel Community (ECSC), to regulate European

    industry & improve commerce.* The six founding states were Belgium, France,Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and The Netherlands.*1957: the Treaties of Romewere signed by the six

    member states, forming:-The European Economic Community (EEC)

    -The European Atomic Energy Community (Euroatom)

    Basis of the EU

    The European Union is based on the rule oflaw and democracy. It is neither a new Statereplacing existing ones nor is it comparable to

    other international organizations.Its Member States delegate sovereignty to

    common institutions representing the interestsof the Union as a whole on questions of jointinterest.

    All decisions and procedures are derivedfrom the basic treaties ratified by the Member

    States.

    Goals of the EU

    To continue to improve Europes economy byregulating trade and commerce.

    To form a single market for Europe'seconomic resources.

    As these goals were accomplished, other

    India-EU Relationship

    The EU is India's largest trading partner, accounting for20% of Indian trade. However India accounts for only1.8% of the EU's trade and attracts only 0.3% of

    European Foreign Direct Investment, although stillprovides India's largest source for India.

    According to a report in 2011, India, at that time, wasthe eighth largest trading partner of the European

    Union, behind China and Russia.
