Music fills our streets, artists set up their easels outside and the crisp weather inspires us to create. ArtsWestchester has plenty in store for us this season. Whether you are interested in spending your Saturday afternoon at an historic site, spending your day at a museum, or taking your child to a Wednesday
morning storybook class, our County has something for everyone. I feel fortunate to have ArtsWestchester in our County to inspire our residents to participate in the arts. This monthly ArtsNews publication highlights the many cultural opportunities provided for the enjoyment of residents throughout the County. Can it be true that, in terms of size and production, the brick industry in the Hudson Valley was second of importance in our region to IBM? So George H. Hutton told us in his book The Great Hudson River Brick Industry. We can quibble with his hyperbole, but the truth is that in its day, the brick industry was a force with which to be reckoned. In Haverstraw alone, 2,500 people worked in the industry, a disparate band of migrants, children, immigrants and slaves, which supported more than 10,000 families. Even harder to believe is that all that's left of this thriving industry is its history, which will be retold in an exhibition at ArtsWestchester: Brick by Brick: The Erie Canal and The Building Boom.
Brick is one of the oldest of building materials, dating back to 7,500 B.C. What made the Hudson Valley, particularly Croton Point, so fertile for brickmaking was the rich blue clay deposits that perhaps resulted from rocks being crushed during the Ice Age and settling in the Hudson River area. The success of the brick industry was in part due to the alignment of several things: the rich blue clay, of course, was one of them. The mid-century opening of the Erie Canal was another. It facilitated transport of heavy goods, up and down the river. Then, there were the terrible loft fires in New York City, which created a need for replenished building materials that, in some years, accounted for a billion bricks annually. Complicating the City's problems was a burgeoning immigration rush, a cholera epidemic and a dire need for a fresh water source (ultimately provided by the Croton Aqueduct). And then, there was the VerValen machine, invented in Haverstraw in 1852, revolutionizing the brick making process.
There was a sad ending to this mighty industry. Glass, aluminum, concrete and imported bricks heightened the competitiveness of the market. Careless excavation caused a landslide and disaster for the village of Haverstraw. Still...there are folks who remember this era with the nostalgic occupation of collecting and trading bricks. There are descendants of the families that worked in the brickyards who remember how good and how bad it was. There are artists who use brick as their sculpture material. There is Peter, a civil engineer, who teaches kids about brick in Westchester classrooms. There's the BrickLayers Union, which keeps the trade alive. There are historic brick buildings, like the former bank restored by ArtsWestchester. All of these remind us of the aesthetic importance of signature brick architecture. Then of course there's a chuckle for the faux brick...LEGOs. And yes, there's also a story to be told, and ArtsWestchester is proud to be telling it.

Steffi Nossen School of Dance will offer a free week of dance classes at the Music Conservatory of Westchester in White Plains and the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Chappaqua on October 15-20. The School will highlight its program of classes for people of all levels, ages and abilities. Core classes are available in modern, ballet, tap, hip-hop and more, while other classes give special attention to dancers as young as one to three years old, creative movement for pre-K children and an expanded boys program. Adaptive dance programs include classes for people with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities, as well as people with Parkinson’s disease, which focuses on balance and flexibility. Hudson River Museum Wins Excellence Award
Students from Museum School 25 participating in a project with Hudson River Museum (photo courtesy of Hudson River Museum) Greater Hudson Heritage Network announced the Hudson River Museum (HRM) as its recipient for the 2018 Award for Excellence. The award recognizes the Museum’s “Museum Studies Partnership for Learning” program. During this project, HRM partnered with Yonkers Public School District’s Museum School 25 during the 2017-2018 school year to engage students in Pre-K through second grade with multiple onsite and in-school visits. The students participated in projects that enhance critical thinking while connecting concepts in art, science, history and more. It also integrated professional development for teaching staff and classroom aides that will enable them to integrate new creative strategies in their classrooms.
series. For twelve years, Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme hosted the series at Jacob Burns Film Center, which ended with Demme’s death in April 2017. In the series, the director of classic films such as Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia presented lesser-known films that inspired his passion for cinema. This fall, JBFC, along with Demme’s family, have kicked off a new season in the filmmaker’s honor. ArtsWestchester Announces “Innovator Award” Honoree
ArtsWestchester will celebrate “innovation,” as it relates to the connection between art and science, during its annual gala on November 17 at The Ritz-Carlton, Westchester. With this theme, the organization emphasizes that creativity fuels new ideas and innovation. The event’s Innovator Award, which recognizes a visionary leader who seizes the power of an idea to make the world a better place, will be awarded to George D. Yancopoulos, MD, PhD, President and Chief Scientific Officer, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.
A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Yancopoulos has been driven by science his entire life. His belief that breakthroughs are possible when creative ideas and science are combined has powered discovery at Regeneron for 30 years. Yancopoulos has led Regeneron alongside Len Schleifer, MD, PhD, since 1989. Together with key members of his team, Dr. Yancopoulos is a principal inventor and developer of Regeneron's six FDA-approved drugs, as well as its foundational technologies. The gala event will include dinner, which will be preceded by cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, as well as live entertainment and dancing. The Dinner Chair will be Thomas R. Manisero, partner at Wilson Elser and ArtsWestchester board member. During the evening, guests can also bid at silent and live auctions on items such as a South African photo safari, a stay at St. Martin and more. Proceeds from the event and its auctions will benefit the programs and services offered by ArtsWestchester throughout the year. New Monthly Series Brings Happy Hour to the Art Gallery

ArtsWestchester recently announced the launch of a late-night gallery series to take place from 6-8:30pm on the first Thursday of every month. “Gallery Nite Out” aims to attract an engaged, art-loving audience to gather for a “new kind of happy hour.” The events will vary, but will always feature activities inspired by ArtsWestchester's current contemporary art exhibitions. Additional offerings include live DJs, specialty tastings by local
restaurants, wine and beer, and more. A full season of six "Gallery Nite Out" events includes an artist talk, exhibition tour and reception two days after ArtsWestchester’s Brick by Brick exhibition opens, with TOMA Bloody Mary cocktails (10/4); a team Jenga tournament (11/1); a holiday networking mixer with music by DJ CLAFFMATIC, cocktails by KAS Spirits and a gift-making table (12/6); a Drink and Paint event with a professional teaching artist (1/3); a photoshoot with artist and photographer Barry Mason (3/7) and a group yoga session (4/4). A Spooktacular Spectacle in ValhallaOn the evening of October 20, Smart Arts at Westchester Community College will present Cirque-tacular’s Spooktacular. The family-friendly Halloween circus and variety show imagines a cast of spooky creatures as they escape to the circus. Guests will witness aerial stunts by witches, contorting tricks by skeletons and daring maneuvers by vampires. Smart Arts encourages guests to attend the event in costume and participate in the costume parade. The event takes place at the Academic Arts Building on the College’s campus in Valhalla. With Sleepy Hollow right in its backyard, Historic Hudson Valley and its surrounding community embrace John Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow novel with a series of annual Halloween-related events. New to this year’s lineup is The Unsilent Picture, an immersive theater experience that features an original commissioned black-and-white film that stars Tony Award-winner Bill Irwin. Other events have become Westchester staples: The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
boasts 7,000 hand-carved jack o’lanterns that are displayed as elaborate sculptures at Van Cortlandt Manor. New sculptures this year include a medieval castle and a functioning windmill. During Horseman’s Hollow, professional actors, special effects and traditional mid-1700s costumes set the stage for an interactive haunted trail. Master storytellers Jonathan Kruk and Jim Keyes tell the tale of Irving’s Legend in Sleepy Hollow’s 1685 Old Dutch Church, accompanied by live organ music. Finally, Irving’s former home, Sunnyside, provides all-ages arts activities, shadow puppet performances and a literary-themed scavenger hunt. For more info, visit hudsonvalley.org.
Jay Ghoul’s House of Curiosities brings guests into the mystery as they arrive at Lyndhurst Mansion to solve the cause of a series of deaths. The 1920s story takes place after a group of archeologists unearth an ancient Egyptian tomb before they inexplicably began dying one by one. During this nighttime theater performance, guests will journey through the eerily lit halls of Lyndhurst, which will be decked with Halloween decorations. While this
event is recommended for audience members, from schoolchildren through adults, a daytime tour “with a Halloween twist” is also available. This year, Lyndhurst has expanded its seasonal offerings to include an outdoor sculpture exhibition called Futurescape through October 31. The futuristic large-scale metal sculptures by Malcolm MacDougall III will be on view during the day, and will also be dramatically lit at night for visitors to explore along the Mansion’s landscape. In addition to the sculptures, the site’s Scarecrow Invasion installation returns. Two-hundred middle-school students will work with MacDougall to create scarecrows, which will also be on display. Performing Arts Center at Purchase College

The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College (PAC) has launched a full season of music, dance and family programming. PAC’s strong classical offerings include several performances from both Westchester Philharmonic (see page A7) and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In addition, the American String Quartet will perform a work inspired by author Salman Rushdie’s novel The Enchantress of Florence, from which the author himself will read excerpts on October 13. Lea DeLaria (Orange is the New Black) will combine her frank humor with her impressive vocal jazz range on October 20. An orchestral ensemble joins Portland Cello Project in homage to rock band Radiohead on March 23. An array of dance programming from PAC ranges from contemporary works by NW Dance Project (11/2) to newly choreographed ballets from Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (3/16). Meanwhile, world music brings traditional Mexican music (Aida Cuevas, 11/4) and Cuban flair (Tiempo Libre, 4/7) to the stage. Holiday favorites and whimsical all-ages experiences round out the season.

Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts opens its indoor fall and spring season amidst the Renaissance furniture and 16th century paintings of the Center’s historic Music Room. The more-than-15 performances in the intimate space range from cabaret and chamber music to jazz and American roots. Continuing its collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center, Caramoor presents jazz vocalist and saxophonist Camille Thurman with the Darrell Green Trio (10/20) and Edmar Castañeda Quartet (5/11). In November, multi-instrumentalist and fiddler Bruce Molsky will return as part of his trio, Molsky’s Mountain Drifters, which includes banjo and bluegrass guitar (11/17). Later that month, The English Concert offers an all-Baroque concert, featuring the music of Handel, Vivaldi and more (11/30). The holiday spirit takes over when Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble New York Polyphony performs songs that span seven centuries of Christmas music (12/15). In April, Haitian-American cellist and vocalist Leyla McCalla blends creole, Cajun, Haitian music with American jazz and folk (4/13).
Clocktower Players
The 2018-19 season for Clocktower Players offers a solid mix of the poignant and the playful. This month, the resident theater company at Irvington Town Hall Theater presents a production of The Laramie Project. This play, which runs from October 12-21, tells the story of Matthew Shepard, a homosexual teenager who died in 1998 after he was brutally attacked and left to die. The play’s mature subject matter opens a dialogue about homophobia and acceptance. A percentage of the profits from this production will be donated to The Matthew Shepard Foundation. Springtime brings family-friendly fun to the stage with the classic musical Annie from March 9-17. The Tony Award-winning score includes audience favorites like Tomorrow and A Hard-Knock Life. The theater also offers a youth educational program that introduces children to the stage. Four different youth troupes, for children aged four through 12, will present their own productions, including The Wizard of Oz and Les Miserables.
Schoolhouse Theater

For its 33rd season, Schoolhouse Theatre offers four plays of note, including the likes of Cole Porter, a Christmas carol sing-along and a premiere about Henri Matisse. On October 5-14, jazz singer Stevie Holland stars in a one-woman show as Linda Porter, the wife of legendary composer and songwriter Cole Porter. Live musicians will accompany Love Linda: the Life of Mrs. Cole Porter, which is directed by Tony Award-winner Richard Maltby Jr. It runs through October 14 before heading to Off-Broadway. In December, a collection of yuletide songs will encourage audience participation and carol singing. Come spring, Schoolhouse will premiere The Color of Light, a new play by Jesse Kornbluth, which tells the story of Henri Matisse and a nurse named Monique Bourgeois, who played a central role in the creation of the artist’s Chapelle du Rosaire (The Chapel of the Rosary).

Westchester Philharmonic has announced a four-show season complete with special guests, tap dancing and an all-Beethoven event, all taking place at Performing Arts Center at Purchase College. On October 21, an all-orchestral opening event led by conductor Jaime Laredo, will include Ravel’s Pavane pour une infant défunte; one of Haydn’s final three symphonies, Drumroll; and Brahms’ first symphony, which took him 22 years to compose. Next, the Philharmonic’s popular Winter Pops! performance will take place on December 16, with special guest trio Time for Three, which performs songs that range from Bach to Beatles. Rachel Worby will conduct this event, as well as a February 10 event with special guest tap dancer Savion Glover. The event will include fireworks and a kid-friendly “instrument petting zoo” at which children can try their hand at a collection of instruments. The season closes with an all-Beethoven finale, featuring violinist Pamela Frank and the Philharmonic, led by Maestro Laredo. At this event, the season will close with the full-bodied Symphony No. 5.

Through May, Downtown Music will provide a schedule of internationally-touring musicians. Many of these shows are part of the organization’s “Noonday Getaway” series, which provides a musical respite on Wednesday afternoons. For instance, pianist Youlan Ji joins members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra on October 3 to play a concerto of Beethoven from a rare 19th century transcription of the original score. Meanwhile, guitarist John Lehmann-Haupt presents classical interpretations of music from Bach to Stevie Wonder on March 20. The season continues with highlights that include works from South America (Duo Lontano, 3/27) and songs of change, praise and protest (Gilda Lyons and Daron Hagen 5/22). Members from REBEL Ensemble for Baroque Music will perform twice during the season (11/7 and 12/12), as will Angelica, a chamber choir that will uphold its seasonal tradition of performing medieval and renaissance yuletide selections (12/19) before returning in the spring for a concert that features works written by women from the 13th to the 21st century (5/29).

Emelin Theatre brings an array of cultural events to its stage this season, including music, comedy and events for the whole family. Country rock band Poco offers hits like Crazy Love and Heart of the Night to Mamaroneck audiences on October 12. The Theatre also kicks off its newest series, "Made in Westchester," with New Rochelle native Kaya Nicole and Samba Soul, who will perform bossa nova, samba classics and original tunes on November 1. The following night, singer-songwriter Josh Ritter plays an acoustic solo show. Westchester comedian Joe Matarese, who has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and had his own Comedy Central Presents special, will bring laughter to the stage on November 10. The season continues with Nutcracker Dream with Ballet des Amériques (12/16, 22), Leading Ladies of Broadway (1/26), a performance by The Westchester Chordsmen (1/31), a staging of beloved children’s illustrator Eric Carle’s stories (3/16) and more.
TarrytownMusic Hall

Tarrytown Music Hall presents a lineup of family-friendly classics, beloved comedians and sing-along tribute bands this fall. The Music Hall’s dance-company-in-residence, Ballet des Ameriques (BDA), performs a new series on select Wednesdays called "Westchester Wednesday Dance," which offers an evening of BDA’s original works. A free day of family fun on October 7 engages children with dance performances, arts and crafts, and more. High-profile musicians, like Don McLean (11/7) and The Wallflowers (11/19), as well as comedians like Vic DiBitetto (10/13) and Maria Bamford (12/7), will take over the Tarrytown stage throughout the season. Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art Changes Name, Launches New Exhibition
Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art has been a staple in the Westchester community for fifteen years. On October 13, it reopens its doors as Hudson Valley MOCA (or Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art) with an expanded mission to bring world-class art to the region through community engagement and education programming. Exhibitions will also include pieces from the extensive collection of its founders, the Straus family. It's from this collection that Hudson Valley MOCA’s inaugural exhibition will draw inspiration and exhibited works. Death is Irrelevant, on view through August 2, 2019, explores the human condition through representations of the human body. Contemporary figurative sculptures that span more than 40 years take an existential look into whether art-making is an act of self-preservation or a projected dialogue about societal ideas. Twenty-six artists from 17 countries present perspectives into one’s existence. For instance, Entang Wiharso struggles with his children’s exposure to both Western and Indonesian cultures, while Damien Hirst’s work, from which the exhibition is named, touches on religion, death and immortality. An opening reception will take place on October 13. The reception will include two performances by Shawn Lawson and the Progression Ensemble, as well as a solo clarinet performance by David Rothenberg. Local Organizations Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in WestchesterThis October, local organizations and groups in Westchester will observe Hispanic Heritage Month, a nationwide celebration of the histories, traditions, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Audiences of all ages will experience and embrace Hispanic culture through a diverse range of offerings, including live concerts, dance performances, hands-on workshops, films, children’s activities and more.
For instance, Mount Vernon Public Library will present a “Paint Fiesta” with artist Pamela Tucker on October 6, during which children ages 5-12 and their caregivers will create a painting hat will be displayed at the library. Greenburgh Public Library will join the celebration with diverse family-friendly events, including a concert by Argentinean guitarist Pedro Baez (October 7), a salsa dance workshop with Maestro Carlos Doñán of Latinshines (October 9) and a live reading by writer Xanath Caraza who will read selections in English and Spanish from her new book of poems (October 13). On October 12, Warner Library invites audiences to the RSHM Life Center for “Fiesta Flamenco,” a music and dance workshop with choreographer Rebeca Tomás and the Palo Seco Flamenco Company. On the same day, Purchase College Conservatory of Music will honor Hispanic heritage with a live screening of the Mexican 1936 film Redes, accompanied by The Purchase Symphony Orchestra, which will perform the film’s original score, and The Purchase Latin Jazz Orchestra, which will play a set of music by acclaimed Latin American composers. A live concert series at Ossining Public Library will feature Dominican singer-songwriter and guitarist Ricardo Gautreau, who will perform songs from Latin countries (October 13), as well as Arts Latino NY Ensemble’s lively bilingual program of Latin American theater, dance and music (October 27). When the Erie Canal was opened in 1825, it fueled an era of prosperity that was ignited by the brick industry in cities and towns along the Hudson River. This industry is the subject of ArtsWestchester’s current exhibition, Brick by Brick: The Erie Canal & the Building Boom, which remains on view through January 19. Installations of large-scale contemporary artwork will be on view, alongside historical materials, archival and commissioned photographs, and the personal narratives of individuals who witnessed the region’s once vital brick industry. Together, these elements tell a story with complex intersections of immigration, industry and innovation. Explains ArtsWestchester Director of Folk Arts Aaron Paige: “This exhibition connects the materiality of brick as a historic and aesthetic object to the intangible stories that local residents construct around it.”
For 12 artists, Hudson Valley bricks are the subject and material for artworks that create a narrative about the function, meaning and durability of these objects. For instance, photographer Christopher Payne was commissioned to capture the brickyards’ legacy through sites like the Old Croton Aqueduct and ruins of the castle on Bannerman Island. Artist Julia Whitney Barnes created A Hudson River of Bricks, a twenty-five foot installation that incorporates hundreds of historic Hudson Valley bricks to form a scale version of the Hudson River from New York City to Albany.
A series of related programs will also take place in ArtsWestchester’s gallery. On October 13, three generations of Westchester bricklayers will discuss the history of bricklaying, explore brick bond patterns and lead participants in a hands-on wall-building project. During a November 3 event, which includes a brick swap, the region’s leading brick hunters and collectors will tell stories of discovery and adventure along the Hudson River. The following weekend, on November 10, spirituals singers and storytellers will narrate the tale of bricks in Haverstraw’s African American community.

The Bedford Playhouse Reopens With Expanded ProgrammingThe Bedford Playhouse (TBP) that initially opened its doors in 1947 before shuttering in 2015 recently hosted its grand re-opening as a cultural center. After several years of fundraising, TBP gutted and rebuilt the old theater as a state of the art facility with luxury finishes and reclining seats, while preserving much of the historic molding and architectural detailing. The building's exterior will also remain the same, with the exception of a new “The Bedford Playhouse” sign, which now also includes “Home of the Clive Davis Arts Center.” The facility also debuts a café with a full bar and light food, a tasting room and event spaces for rental. Now with three theaters, the facility is also rolling out new programming. Together with the Clive Davis Art Center, TBP will present a selection of films, including mainstream and independent motion pictures, classics and family-friendly hits. In addition, other arts programming will take place in the establishment, such as performances, author events, art exhibits and educational offerings. On October 4, the Playhouse will screen a “lost” film by director/actor Orson Welles, left unfinished during his lifetime. The Other Side of the Wind was recently restored and completed. For one night only, TBP will present the Westchester premiere of the film, with permission from Netflix, which will debut the work next month. Westchester Organizations Discuss the Art of QuiltsThis month, several arts groups in Westchester independently explore the art of quilts and nontraditional processes for creating them. The Uncommon Threads exhibition at Westchester Community College Center for the Arts displays more than 50 non-traditional art quilts, which will remain on view through October 5. Exhibiting artists are all members of Brooklyn Quilters Guild who create contemporary designs. One of these artists, Kirsten Fisher, will host a one-day workshop on October 27 that explores design, composition, techniques used for creating non-traditional quilts and more. On October 21, Ossining Arts Council continues “Art Speaks,” a series of talks with people who are involved with the arts, with “Every Quilt Has a Story” at Steamer Firehouse Gallery. Artist Tamar Drucker will share her works and discuss her inspiration and processes. Drucker’s fiber art works incorporate textures and colors into paintings, sculptures and sketches. Artists Evan Bishop and Katori Walker, supported by a Yonkers Arts Initiative Grant from ArtsWestchester (see page A23), continue to bring their Yes Yonkers! community quilt project to the City of Yonkers. The project calls for Yonkers residents and visitors to create 10”x10” canvas swatches that express, through artwork or words, their feelings about the City. “Pop-Up Creation Stations” give participants the opportunity to create swatches at local businesses: October 18 at
Yonkers Riverfront Library (children); October 19 at How Sweet It Is (seniors); and October 20 at Ridge Hill Shopping Center’s Harvest Fest on the Hill (public). ArtsFest returns on October 19-21 with a full calendar of art events and activities. The weekend-long festival, organized by New Rochelle Council on the Arts, will highlight more than thirty arts venues in the towns of New Rochelle and Pelham. The celebration kicks off with a Friday night “Arts in Oktoberfest Gallery Hop” on October 19, during which select galleries will invite guests to view exhibitions and sample beer and cider.
The festival continues throughout the weekend with live performances and interactive activities, as well as studio tours with artists such as 3D sculpture artist Charles Fazzino, painter Marie Hines Cowan and collage artist Martha Valenzuela. In addition, the New Rochelle BID Grand Market and the seventh annual Lincoln Avenue Arts and Culture Fest offer family-friendly arts activities, food and music. New additions to the festival include an Artisan Craft Market at Ottavio’s Woodworking, a Saturday performance of The Sleeping Beauty by Ajkun Ballet at the New Rochelle Public Library (NRPL), and music, magic and face painting at Wolf’s Lane Park in Pelham. Art exhibitions on view include A Shift in Focus at Iona College, and New Rochelle Art Association’s 103rd Annual Juried Exhibition at NRPL. Other participating venues include Huguenot Children’s Library, Pelham Art Center and more.
On Sunday, ArtsFest will culminate with a lineup of fun arts happenings. A spoken word event at the NRPL will present live readings of holiday-themed stories by the group Read650, during which a dozen Westchester writers will read aloud their true stories, each limited to 650 words. A “Classical and Beyond” concert will also take place on Sunday, hosted by the College of New Rochelle (CNR). This live performance features Angels in the Chamber, the CNR Choir, staff performances and “chamber punk” by IMPetus.
Visitors are encouraged to explore all of the festival’s offerings via a free trolley that will provide transportation between four locations: Lawton Street, New Rochelle City Hall, New Rochelle High School and Pelham Art Center. For more info, visit: newrochellearts.org.

ArtsWestchester and 42 Broad, a joint venture of Alexander Development Group and The Bluestone Organization, will include a public art component in the development of 42 Broad Street West, a new luxury, rental apartment complex in the Fleetwood section of Mount Vernon. The arts & business partnership is seeking qualifications from professional New York State artists or artist collectives interested in creating a permanent, site-responsive work of public sculpture that will enhance and enliven the streetscape at the intersection of Broad Street and Fleetwood Avenue. Nicholas Alexander of 42 Broad explains, “The location selected for the site-specific sculpture serves as a gateway to Mount Vernon… through our partnership with ArtsWestchester, we have the opportunity to distinguish 42 Broad Street West as an energetic, creative and up-scale destination in the city.”
The request for artist qualifications is the first of a two-stage competitive process to identify artist finalists for the commission. Deadline for submissions of qualification is December 14. Five artists selected from this initial process will be invited and awarded a stipend to submit artwork proposals. ArtsWestchester recently met with the recipients of its Yonkers and Mount Vernon Arts Initiative grant programs to network and brainstorm creative ideas for their grant-supported projects. Yonkers grantees (top photo) were joined by Westchester Deputy Executive Kenneth Jenkins; Mount Vernon grantees (bottom photo) were joined by Westchester County Legislator Lyndon Williams and Director of the Westchester County Youth Bureau DaMia Harris-Madden. These grants provide support to artists and cultural organizations whose project contributes new work and community engagement to their respective Yonkers or Mount Vernon community.
A Recent Yonkers Arts Initiative Success Story… Locally Produced Dance Film Wins Award
A short film directed by Hamm & Clov Artistic Director Holly Villaire recently won the “Best Artistic Freedom” award at the Polish Short Film Festival in Las Vegas. The film, TABOO, was also the runner-up for “Best Ensemble Piece.” Starring internationally acclaimed dancer Ramon Flowers and choreography by Labyrinth Dance Theater’s Artistic Director Sasha Spielvogel, the original dance film presents a journey of courage and endurance in the face of tragedy during the height of the AIDS epidemic in New York’s gay community. The film was made possible with support from a Yonkers Arts Initiative Grant from ArtsWestchester in 2015.
