"The 70s Called and They Want Their Radio Club Back"

By Ron Luse, KX9Y

A special meeting of Iowa State University Cyclone Amateur Radio Club (ARC), alums and friends from across the state was held October 9th, in Ames. This meeting was coordinated by the ISU-local Story County ARC and the Cedar Rapids-based Rockwell Collins ARC. The meeting was held at Ames-based PowerFilm Solar. PowerFilm VP of Operations Pat Rundall, N0HR, a Cyclone ARC alum, hosted the meeting and tour of the facility. PowerFilm So-lar provides flexible solar panels to users in portable markets, which include field canopies that are rated in the kilowatts. Their fabrication facilities are located in Ames. The History of Radio at Iowa State The program of the evening was a whirlwind tour of history of amateur radio at Iowa State. The rich history includes experimental radio dating back to 1911, with the first license being "Special Land Station" 9YI in 1912. The ISU campus at one time hosted 4 separate amateur radio club stations, which contrasts with the recent (2014) loss of the last ham station on campus. This history presentation was intermixed with some contemporaneous history involving Art Col-lins, W0CXX, and aviatrix Amelia Earhart. Collins received his first ham license, 9CXX, at age 14. He had achieved national acclaim by age 16 by maintaining radio contact with a polar expe-dition when the US Navy could not. Collins would go on to found Collins Radio Company. Years later, the Collins ARC, would attain his call sign, W0CXX, in memoriam, for its club station license. Another thread in the history program involved Amelia Earhart. She lived in Des Moines in her youth and the Iowa State Fair was the first place that Earhart saw an airplane. Sixty five years after her disappearance, members of the Collins amateur radio club were involved in searching for the aircraft in which she was lost. Discussions All attending were hopeful that a new on-campus station will become a reality in the near future. The great turn-out at the meeting drove optimism. This meeting was also an opportunity for cur-rent student members, advisers and alums to discuss the station situation and potential ways to support and solidify proposals for a new station. Currently, Cyclone ARC, and its predecessor Campus Radio Club, still hold club licenses W0YI (descendant of the 9YI history), and W0ISU. The club continues to operate on-campus 2 meter

and 70 cm repeaters while its HF gear is in storage waiting for a new permanent home. The club participate in area activities including ARES, JOTA, fox hunts and storm watch. Collecting the History Much of the early club history had been researched by Dwight W. "Bill" Smith, W0WOI. That his-tory is available on line on the Cyclone ARC and ARRL Midwest Division websites. Additional data was received from alums known to the author AND by alums already listed on the CARC website. "Cold call" emails to strangers requesting history on CARC resulted in very willing and helpful participation. Producing the presentation turned into a great joy of discovery. Re-spondents provided detail from the early 1960's through current day, with very few gaps. Discussions are continuing on how to enable alums to develop an even more complete club histo-ry, and how and when to next hold the CARC/friends/alums event. The success of this event demonstrates the opportunity for another event with more advanced topics (and advanced notice). Initial idea for an alumni meeting Several former Cyclone hams share a common employer (Rockwell Collins), and the notion that a joint meeting with Cyclone ARC alums seemed like a natural idea. Keeping in touch with the cur-rent members allowed the alums to hear of the loss of the station, which was another motivation to help provide the context and history of ham radio on campus. Once discussions were shared with a greater circle of former CARC members, the momentum built. Pat Rundall, of PowerFilm Solar in Ames, offered to host the event at the PowerFilm Solar facility. Pat also involved the Story County ARC and organized the logistics for food. An idea worth repeating ? Individual members expressed great interest in a repeat event. Similar events are likely to occur at ISU in the future. This recipe can be extended with other educational institutions. The Collins ARC hopes to do a similar program with the University of Iowa ARC in the future. Hints for having similar events: Keep in touch with club via mailing lists, etc. The Internet is a great tool, enabling even out-

of-towners to stay in touch. An interesting locale draws interest to an event. Club history is an interesting topic, and something that alums can bring to the event. Having a meal concurrent with the club enabled out-of-towners to make the most of the time

available Iowa State ARC had a successful event based on these ideas. They may be useful for other school and university clubs. Perhaps other schools can benefit from these ideas, or build on them and provide even better ideas to promote amateur radio and radio clubs. Ron Luse, KX9Y, was first licensed while a member of the Cyclone ARC. He is currently a soft-ware engineer at Rockwell Collins and currently resides in Marion, Iowa. He is active on HF with the contesters at N0MA, the “Radio Farm”.

Cliff’s Notes

Congratulations to Dale Bagley K0KY on his re-election as ARRL Missouri Section Man-ager for a new term beginning January 1, 2015.

Look for the W1AW/0 operation returning to Kansas November 5 to 11. Congratulations to all of the hams who have done a great job operating W1AW/0 portable from our four Midwest Division states during this 2014 ARRL Centennial year!

Kudos to the Ottumwa ARC, and all the operators who participated in the 2014 Iowa QSO Party. Unofficial results are at http://www.wa0dx.org/IAQSO/IAQSO_Results_2014.php.

Our condolences to the family and friends of Walter A. “Pete” Wessel Jr. W0CM, of Liber-al Kansas, who died on September 29. Pete’s wife Martha “Marte” Wessel K0EPE prede-ceased him on September 23. They were married for 69 years. ARRL Honorary Vice President Bruce Frahm K0BJ said that “Liberal has lost a YL legend and a lowband DX legend.”

Our best wishes to the National World War I Museum ARC, which was approved as an ARRL Affiliated club by the ARRL Executive Committee at its October meeting. The club’s WW1USA commemorative call has been very active during this year of the Great War Centennial, and is preparing for their final operation this year on December 27-28 to re-member the Christmas Truce of 1914.

Kudos to Rick Wilson W0KT of Omaha, Nebraska, who will celebrate 50 years as a ham on November 17. Rick was first licensed on November 17, 1964, as WA0KST in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Congratulations to the W1AW/0 Missouri coordinators Mitch Odneal NW0M and Ward Silver N0AX and the 40 operators for a great second week of operation in October. The team made 30,329 QSOs, including dupes, and worked 118 countries and 35 zones. Logs have been sent to ARRL HQ and uploaded to LoTW.

Kudos to Randy Schulze KD0HKD, President of the Raytown ARC for the excellent video interview with Kansas City NBC Affiliate KSHB-TV daily news magazine “The List—Around Kansas City” program. It’s the third segment on this video: http://www.thelisttv.com/the-list/around-town/around-kansas-city/kansas-city-really-xtreme-bugs-super-shopping. Great publicity for Amateur Radio!

Best wishes to Al Culbert K0AL and his wife Edith, who have moved from Iowa to Noko-mis, Florida. Our thanks to Al for his service to ham radio, and the ARRL. We will miss his advice and counsel as a Midwest Division Assistant Director.

We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of noted Amateur Radio author Bill Sa-bin W0IYH, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who died on October 13. Bill was an active ham, and a past recipient of the ARRL Technical Excellence Award. He was an engineer with Rockwell Collins Company.

73, Cliff K0CA
