Color-codedPolypropyleneorNylondiscsaregroovedonbothsidestoaspecificmicronsize.Aseriesofthesediscsarethenstackedandcompressedonaspeciallydesignedspine.Whenstacked,thegrooveontoprunsoppositetothegroovebelow,creatingafiltrationelementwithastatisticallysignificantseriesofintersectinggrooveswhichtrapthesolids.Thestackisenclosedinacorrosionandpressureresistanthousing.

Duringfiltration,thediscsaretightlycompressedtogetherbyacombinationofthespring'spowerandthedifferentialpressure,thusprovidinghighfiltrationefficiency.Filtrationoccurswhilewaterispercolatingfromtheouterdiametertotheinnerdiameteroftheelement.Dependingonthemicronrating(Seetable),therearefrom18(in400microndiscs)to32(in20microndiscs)stoppingpointsineachtrack,thuscreatingtheuniquein-depthfiltration(Figurebelow).

FILTRATION pROCESS

Duringthefiltrationprocess,unfilteredwaterentersthemediafiltersystemviatheinletmanifold.Itiscleanedbyflowingthroughthemediaanddischargedviatheoutletmanifold.Duringfiltrationtheinletportsareopenandthebackwashportsareclosed.Waterflowsfromthetop,overthediffuser,downthroughthemedialayertotheoutletthroughthe“mushrooms”locatedinthebottompartofthefilter.

bACkwASH pROCESS

Duringthebackwashprocesstheinletportclosesandthebackwashportopens,allowingreversewaterflowintothefilter.Cleanpressurizedwaterfromtheotherfiltersnowflowsintothebottomofthefilter,liftingthemediaandfreeingtheaccumulateddirtanddebristhatisthenflushedoutthroughthebackwashvalveandintothebackwashmanifold.

Ifthebackwashrestrictionvalveisadjustedproperly,thedebriswillbeflushedoutofthefilterwhilethemedia,beingofahigherBulkDensitythanthedebriswillremainfluidizedinthefiltertank.Onlyonefilteratatimeshouldbackwash.Thewaterthatisbeingusedtobackwashonefilterwouldhavealreadypassedthroughanotherfilterorfilterssothatthebackwashprocessiscarriedoutwithclean,filteredwater.
