Hydro Group plcHydro Group is a specialist in the research, design and manufacture of subsea and harsh environment electrical and optical connectors, penetrators, cables, assemblies and terminations. With 30 years experience, Hydro Group is a market leader in providing solutions for subsea applications in domestic and international industries including marine renewable energies, oil and gas, oceanographic and defence.

Being first in the development of any innovative product is always challenging but the lessons learned can provide extremely rewarding results. Hydro Group Renewable Connector (HRC) is the first dry mate 12 kV subsea connector dedicated to the marine renewable energies industry. The connector is qualified by DNV and has a design life of 25 years. The HRC design has incorporated over 250 mate/de-mate cycles and has been tested electrically to its maximum limits. Four of the HRCs have been installed on the Wave Hub project off the coast of Cornwall, UK. All of the preparation for the connector and cable termination is carried out onshore allowing the reduction of mate and de-mate times of wave and tidal devices from days to hours bringing considerable cost savings to such projects.

During the extensive 12kV qualification programme the research highlighted potential additional development areas which have been integrated into other products such as 22kV dry mate and 34kV hybrid wet-mate connectors. Each product is different, each customer specification is unique. Hydro Group’s products and services are unique, with design application solutions provided by our in-house engineering team whose sole purpose is to develop a fit for purpose solution to suit customers’ individual requirements and budgets.

Langlee Wave PowerLanglee Wave Power is an energy developer with innovative technology to harness power from waves.

Established in 2006, Langlee designed its Wave Energy Converter with a floating steel structure and lightweight water wings. The technology has been built to a North Sea oil and gas industry specification of 60 years in the most hostile marine environments.

Offering a more flexible and efficient system, Wave Energy Converters can be quickly installed and easily maintained. They lap up wave movement through the water wings which move in opposite directions providing optimal power efficiency which is converted into electricity through generators.

A unique mooring system based on tried and tested fish farming technology allows easy installation, whether for single or multiple units.

The 50kw E1 Wave Energy Converter has been designed to be scaled up into an array which can provide several megawatts of power.

An array featuring 20 E1 units would provide 1 MW which would produce 4 GWh per year, enough to power around 1,000 homes.

The E1, which measures 15 x 15 meters and weighs 70 tonnes, is ideal for small island communities which are facing energy challenges.

Langlee has agreements in place with wave site developers and utility companies in locations around the globe including Turkey and New Zealand, and is building links in the UK which it views as an important market.

Peterhead Port AuthorityPeterhead Port has been recognised as one of the best places in Scotland for handling renewable energy projects. Its strategic location on the east coast of Scotland is close to several potential sites identified for offshore wind projects. Aberdeenshire also offers a great wind resource for onshore wind turbines and the port regularly handles the import of turbines for installation in north east Scotland.

The Smith Embankment Development, completed in 2010, offers deepwater quayside, heavy lift capability and 13,000 square metres of working area. There are options to extend the site by an additional 50,000 sqm. Quayside land is supported by the recent investment by Scottish Enterprise in the nearby Energetica Business Park which offers a further 30 acres for industrial and office accommodation targeted at energy related business.

Peterhead is well connected to the supply chain associated with the offshore oil and gas industry. The depth of engineering and marine expertise in this sector will support offshore renewables and provide innovation for future development. There are also excellent research capabilities associated with the nearby universities and planned European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre in Aberdeen.

The Scottish Government recognised Peterhead as one of the best sites in Scotland for renewable energy development in Scotland’s National Renewables Infrastructure Plan. Speak to us to find out why and see what we can do for your business.
