Can you catch it?

Spring Fling was out of this world! On Friday night, members from all over our Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Circle K District bonded over a large ice breaker called ‘Dragon Tales’, competed in Minute to Win It activities and the must have Denny’s and IHOP run.

Waking up bright and early on Saturday morning, our district performed over 400 hours of service around Camp Wawbeek by helping to get it ready for the summer with raking, painting, organizing, wood splitting, trash picking and so much more! In the afternoon, members attended some awesome workshops put on by the District Board. We wrapped up Saturday night with the Miss Universe pageant, mascot auctions and school skits! We had AWESOME representation in the Miss Universe Pageant with entries from our very own UW-Platteville’s Sarah Fonger and Emily Myers and Edgewood’s Fayth Hebert and Adama Guede!

You all should be EXTREMELY proud of yourselves for all the service and money that you raised during Spring Fling! In the end, we raised over $2,200 for Camp Wawbeek! This is almost half of our district goal! Keep serving on Capital!

Meet your International President!

Outside of my travel and work as “IP,” I still like to participate in as many service projects as possible. One project I love to do of is reading to children at a local library. While my school is in session, I usually visit a nearby library. At my home in New York City, I visit both my local library and my Chinatown Library. My passion for literacy and reading started as a child, when my teachers taught me a love for reading. I’m sure many of you have found a similar passion, perhaps not for reading, but for another service project that is near and dear to your heart. I can’t wait to see this combined passion and love for service this year.

And what service year is complete without an International Convention! This year, International Convention, affectionately known as “ICON,” is in Vancouver, Canada, from June 26-30. Additionally, we also have our service-oriented event, the Large Scale Service Project, three days earlier (starting June 23) in Vancouver, Canada as well! If any year is the year to go to a truly International Convention, this is the year! Not only will we be providing essential training for officers, but you’ll be able to learn more about CKI as an organization, and you’ll be able to meet CKI members from around the world! And, hopefully, I’ll be able to see you there as well!

My name is Josephine Lukito and I have had the pleasure of serving as your 2012-2013 International President. I hail from the New York District, attending my last year at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo. First, I would like to welcome you all to the start of a new year! Having been a member of the Kiwanis Family for 9 years, I have experienced many “new beginnings” as a member and an officer of CKI! And while it can seem a little daunting, I’m sure you are all going to be doing great things this year as service-minded leaders, both for CKI and for the world!

As a member of CKI, one of my favorite activities is meeting members from around the world; it has, in fact, been a highlight of my year as International President. Among my visits, I had the pleasure of attending the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District at your 2013 District Convention, and I had a really great time getting to know the clubs, leaders and members of the WUM district. Your energy and enthusiasm is contagious, and I always look back to “WUM DCON” as a source of motivation to continue serving the children of the world.

Hey Capital Division!

"Home is where the heart is"; a simple phrase that guides our Governor, Lena, in the service projects she completes. This year, Lena is taking this phrase to the extreme and spreading it throughout the district. How, do you ask? With her governors project! 

Lena's project is made up of three components: 1. Have each member complete 5 service hours related

to ending the problems of homelessness.2. Have each division hold one divisional-wide clothing

or supply drive.3. Have 5 schools participate in National Hunger and

Homelessness Awareness Week.

Of course, she's not going to leave clubs in the dark when it comes to actually reaching these goals! She is planning on distributing resources to each club with project ideas, places to volunteer and much more. 

So don't just sit there and read this; get serving! You can do all sorts of things to focus on homelessness throughout the year. Go serve food at a soup kitchen or church, collect clothing or other supplies and donate them to a shelter, volunteer to help homeless shelters with things ranging from programs to resume writing! Let's show homelessness who's boss and help knock it out!!!

*The term 'event' includes ANYTHING that you do this summer... So anything from an individual member volunteering to hosting an interclub to attending International

Convention!**As the obsessed photographer I am, I also am going to include a bonus to this

challenge. In addition to getting points for doing the previous activities, there will also be a Photo Service Scavenger hunt throughout the summer. At the beginning of each

month in June, July and August, you will all receive a list of a few activities for that month that you can take a picture of you doing and submit them to me. Each member

can only submit one picture per activity!

All dressed up and nothing to do this summer? Team up with

your club to compete against the rest of the division to

become the Capital Division Summer Champion! The rules

are simple: participate and organize events throughout the

summer to win points! The winner will be chosen
