• Service-learning involves students in community service activities and applies the experience to personal and academic development.

• Service-learning occurs when there is "a balance between learning goals and service outcomes" (Furco 3). Service-learning differs from internship experience or volunteer work in its "intention to equally benefit the provider and the recipient of the service as well as to ensure equal focus on both the service being provided and the learning that is occurring" (Furco 5).

• Service-learning course objectives are linked to real community needs that are designed in cooperation with community partners and service recipients.

What is service learning?

Guide: Event Planning Culminating ProjectProject DescriptionIn this project, students work together as a class to plan and host an event at their school or in their local community.

After groups of students pitch their idea for a theme to a client and the client chooses one, students are divided into new groups that are each responsible for coordinating one specific element of the event. The driving question is, “How do we host a highly successful event for a group in our localcommunity?”

How was it used with AOHT?

This was our event for the classroom project.

You can do canned food drives, Empty Bowls projects, adopt-a-family, The Canned Film Festival, etc.

All the elements for the Event Planning course can be applied with the L2F challenge. • Determine what the event will be.• Identify the client.• Establish the event date and time.• Identify a total amount for the budget.• Select the venue.

How easy was it to integrate into AOHT?
