ANNUAL REPORT 2015
Oxley Christian College - 2015 Annual Report
“Oxley is a Christian school committed to excellence of teaching and learning through which students develop their unique abilities in a secure yet stimulating environment. Each student is nurtured towards a personal faith in Christ, an understanding of Christian values and a commitment to serve God and His world.” - Mission Statement
2015 has been a year of accomplishment for the community of Oxley Christian College. The remarkable productivity of students across all year levels and the quality of their achievements, are evidence of the effectiveness of teaching and learning throughout the year.
The school’s vision and mission is intent on expressing the teaching and values of Christ through excellence of educational endeavours and commitment to strong learning outcomes for students of all abilities.
Teaching and LearningThe respectful relationships amongst staff and students has continued to foster a vibrant learning culture this year. Teachers are commended for their dedication to student wellbeing and pursuit of excellence in all aspects of school life. We thank the students for their contribution to the purposeful, optimistic atmosphere in which we work together.
At all year levels teachers have engaged students in a rich diversity of appropriately challenging and innovative educational programs, both on and off campus. We applaud the work of students in all subject areas. We have delighted in the performances and special events which draw families and members of the community to celebrate with us; from Open Day to swimming and athletic carnivals, performing arts evenings, musical productions, remembrance commemorations, art and design exhibitions, grandparents’ days, special assemblies and presentation evenings.
Strong leadership of teaching teams and teacher collaboration has resulted in impressive progress in professional learning and educational achievements. In the Junior School, Units of Work from Prep to Year 6 have been reviewed regarding alignment with the Australian Curriculum. Teachers have implemented classroom use of learning intentions, success criteria, strategic questioning, student reflection and peer feedback. A major review of assessment and reporting has been completed, including increased use of formative assessment and moderation of standards within teacher teams.
Staff development in the Senior School has continued to focus on implementation of the Australian Curriculum and addressing the learning needs of all students via differentiation of the curriculum. Impressive progress was made to increase literacy in the use of student data to inform practice and reviews of Middle Years curriculum provision and assessment procedures.
Teachers have also been engaged in evaluating the effective use of digital devices in equipping students with 21st Century skills and the need to ensure that digital literacy enhances broader educational goals. The College has provided all teachers with Microsoft Surface Pro tablets and training in readiness for the staged introduction of similar student devices in the Senior School 1:1 Digital Learning Program which will commence in 2016.
Spiritual Life and ServiceSpiritual life is a vital part of the Oxley culture. The development of Oxley as a vibrant, caring community emphasises the place of Christian faith and the development of integrity and compassion in the lives of students, equipping them to serve others in an ever needy world. In Chapel this year there have been many noteworthy highlights, as well as private moments of deep spiritual significance. Many students have been involved in prayer groups. Other teams have raised money and given their time to serve with local charities or with international aid organisations overseas.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
www.oxley.vic.edu.au
Students from all year levels have been involved in leadership. Our College Captains, Tahlie Arena and Timothy Ong, have been exemplary leaders, strongly supported by Vice Captains, Anita Odd and Brayden Smith. Hundreds of other students serve in various parts of the school as leaders of faculties, home groups, houses, chapel, enviro teams, sports groups, performing arts, music bands, ensembles, student groups and clubs. Their work is often with multi-age groups which adds an exciting dynamic to their influence.
Campus Development In January the College embarked on a major refurbishment of all general classrooms from Preps to Year 9. It commenced with the amalgamation of the Prep facilities with the recently vacated Pre-school building and play spaces. The Prep precinct has been completely transformed with enlarged indoor learning spaces and extended, beautifully landscaped outdoor play areas. Further year levels had rooms refurbished during the year, with the remainder due for completion in 2016. The students, teachers and property maintenance staff are commended for their cooperation during the refurbishment and their ingenuity in turning the disruption into positive learning experiences.
In January this year we celebrated the opening of Oxley’s new, state of the art, Early Learning and Day Care Centre. These facilities enable Oxley to add to its provision of sessional pre-school programs, to accommodate educational programs for children from the age of 18 weeks to school entry. The College understands the vital importance of the early learning years. Situated on the College campus, the new centre is perfectly placed to facilitate professional dialogue amongst early learning and primary teachers, enhancing the opportunities to enrich learning and assist students with a seamless transition to the primary years.
Thankfulness2015 has indeed been a wonderfully productive year. On behalf of the College I extend sincere thanks to the Elders and Directors of Life Ministry Centre, the College Council Chairman, Pastor Graham Nelson, and Members of Council. The Deputy Principal - Head of Senior School, Mr Geoff Roberts-Thomson, and the Head of Junior School, Mrs Sharee Gaiser, have given invaluable leadership to their respective teams. Congratulations and thanks to our teachers and to staff involved in learning support, those involved in administration, technology, catering and property maintenance, for their outstanding service to the College. We are grateful to our parents and members of the Oxley community, including past students and many volunteers, for their much appreciated support this year.
The College is pleased to present key information about student outcomes, professional engagement and satisfaction levels for 2015. At the close of another year of abundant blessing, we give thanks and praise to God for all that has been achieved.

As a result, all teachers are involved in rich and diverse professional learning. The total expenditure on Professional Development in 2015, including replacement staff, staff wages and direct provider costs, was approximately $136,000.
New staff participate in a thorough induction program, and mentors guide them through the first year at the College. Graduate teachers are supported through the process enabling them to gain full registration with the Victorian Institute of Teachers. All teaching staff receive first aid training as part of the professional development program.

Oxley Christian College - 2015 Annual Report
YEAR 12 RESULTSThe College congratulates members of the Class of 2015. The 92 students who completed their VCE studies with us in 2015 performed very well. The median ATAR score was 70. Sixteen students gained ATARs in the 90s, including five students who gained ATARs above 97. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, through the VCE Data Service, offers an independent analysis of our school performance, by providing ‘value-added’ data. This data demonstrates that the College has a long tradition of enhancing student performance above that which would normally be predicted. This is attributable to the quality of the teaching and the quality of the overall learning environment. The College maintained that tradition with the 2015 graduates, on average significantly improving the study scores for each student.
Over the last three years, twenty percent of our Year 12 students have gained an ATAR of at least 90.
DUX OF THE COLLEGEOn Presentation Evening we were delighted to announce that Dylan Nossek was Dux of the College for 2015. When Dylan was in Year 11 he gained a perfect score of 50 for Year 12 Mathematical Methods. He followed this with excellent scores (in the top 10% of the state) in 2015 for Accounting, Biology, Chemistry and Specialist Mathematics. While Dylan performed wonderfully well, James Cummings was a close second in the race for Dux. Dylan’s strengths lay in Mathematics and Science. James had outstanding scores in English, History and Literature, as well as strong scores for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematical Methods (2014). These two young gentlemen continue to study together in 2016 in the Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Melbourne.
www.oxley.vic.edu.au
YEAR 12 DESTINATIONSThere were 92 students in the 2015 cohort which included 20 international students. Most of these students (86) applied for courses through VTAC. Of the highest preference offers received, 85% were for universities, 4% for TAFE and 11% for private colleges.
Local Students: Of the offers, 93% were for university courses, while the remainder were for TAFE courses. One student pursued a course at a private college. A small number of students did not choose to commence tertiary study, but rather chose employment, apprenticeships or GAP year.
International students: 58% of our international students were offered a tertiary placement in Melbourne Universities, whilst the remainder were offered places at private colleges.
2015 STUDENT TERTIARY INSTITUTE SELECTIONSAmongst the Melbourne-based universities, this year our students chose almost equally between Monash, Swinburne, Deakin and RMIT. In recent years The University of Melbourne and these four universities have been the favoured destinations of Oxley graduates.
2015 STUDENT COURSE SELECTIONThe students chose a wide variety of courses. Five students have commenced Biomedical Science at three different universities, and these were among the 25% of students who commenced Science and Engineering courses. Approximately 10% of students entered Nursing and 10% of students entered Education courses. Nearly 15% of students were offered Arts courses, while another 12% of students were offered places in Design courses. The list of offers demonstrates that there is an enticing variety of tertiary courses on offer in local universities.

STUDENT PROGRESS & ACHIEVEMENTSThe table below indicates the performance of Oxley students against the National Minimum Standards for Literacy and Numeracy. It also indicates the percentage of students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 who have reached or exceeded the National Minimum Standards. Students who have not reached the National Minimum Standards are students with specific learning difficulties. The College supports all of these students and several receive assistance through Government funding. Students who are below the mean, but not below the Minimum Standards, are also offered extra support by the College.
