Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

SCORE: We Help Small Businesses Like YoursSCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off

the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. We have been doing this for nearly fifty years.

Member Spotlight: Central State BankWho: Central State BankWhat:

Where:

Website: Member Since: October 1, 1944

Nearly 150 years ago, on May 1, 1865, a group of local businessmen including S.G. Stein formed Merchants Exchange Bank, an institution which eventually became Central State Bank. From that humble beginning it has grown to become a true local success story --- the lead institution of Muscatine-based Central Bancshares, Inc., a highly regarded local employer, and a reliable, solid financial partner that has served businesses, families and individuals for generations.

Over the years, Central State has brought a number of banking “firsts” to the community including the area’s first walk-up banking facility , the first drive-up, the first branch offices on Muscatine’s north side (Park Avenue, 1971) and south side (Grandview Avenue, 1977), the first in-store bank (in Econofoods, 1990), and the first bank affinity group (the Ambassador Club). Today it’s a highly-regarded leader in banking with special emphasis in business and commercial lending, ag banking, trust and investment services, and retail/consumer banking. Total assets are over $300 million and total employment is approximately 100 FTEs. Moreover, as a Central Bancshares bank, it’s part of a four-bank, $650 million (assets) organization with over 200 employees, based right here in Muscatine!

Central State Bank is a firm believer in community involvement. It provides financial support to scores of local organizations and charities each year, ranging from major donations to smaller-scale efforts like “Hometown Hundreds,” a unique program that gives away $100 every week to a local non-profit nominated by the public. Perhaps more important is the human element. The bank’s officers and employees are actively involved in leadership roles in a wide variety of organizations in the greater Muscatine area, including GMCCI; in fact, far more than there is space to list in this brief article.

While there are business benefits to these activities --- among them, being more visible to and approachable by current and prospective clients --- the real reason is far more basic. According to Greg Kistler, President and CEO, “As a locally-based community bank, it’s simply the right thing to do.”

A locally owned, full-service bank that traces its roots to 1865 and employs approximately 100 individuals.Five area locations: Main Bank, 301 Iowa Avenue, Downtown Muscatine; Park Avenue Banking Center, 1521 Park Avenue on Muscatine’s North Side; Grandview Avenue Banking Center, 401 Grandview Avenue; Hy-Vee Super Bank, inside Muscatine’s Hy-Vee supermarket; and Wilton Banking Center, 710 West 5th Street, Wilton.

Tai Chi ’25 Days of Summer’ Sponsored by MPTS

Tai Chi has been recognized for centuries in China as an ideal activity for lifelong health and well-being. Anyone who has seen images of masses of people slowly moving in choreographed, dancelike routines is familiar with the beautiful, health-giving art of Tai Chi. The fact that more than 100 million people practice Tai Chi around the world is a testament to its widely acknowledged health benefits. Tai Chi builds strength, endurance, enhances flexibility, improves coordination and helps reduce stress.

Caleen Pagel, a Physical Therapist with Muscatine Physical Therapy Services, P.C. (MPTS) has been teaching Tai Chi for several years now for community members. She attended her first Tai Chi workshop back in 2008 with the intention of learning this form of exercise to help provide the patients with an alternative

way to work on balance and coordination. Pagel quickly learned that others were interested in trying this relaxed, fluid, low impact form of exercise.

At the invitation of the City of Muscatine and the Muscatine Public Library, MPTS started sponsoring Pagel to provide Tai Chi on a broader, more accessible level to the community while taking her program

to the Muscatine riverfront during the summer of 2010. With the flooding that occurred in 2011 and the riverfront underwater, Pagel was looking at other options. Because Muscatine has so many scenic locations and picturesque views, the summer schedule was ‘re-invented’. The first new location was held at scenic Mark Twain Lookout and throughout the rest of the summer, other locations were added including Discovery Park and Weed Park. With interest growing and the requests to continue through the winter were pressing, MPTS worked with the Muscatine Mall and they graciously allowed Pagel to use some space in order to continue Tai Chi throughout the winter months.

Studies have concluded that practicing Tai Chi for thirty minutes, three times a week, for at least three months can slow bone

loss in osteoporosis, lower blood pressure, lessen anxiety, improve sleep, increase functional mobility and balance, enhance circulation, and improve one’s cholesterol profile. Tai Chi is a gentle exercise and can be performed by people of any age to help with your health and natural healing.

Beginning the first week in April, Pagel will be holding Tai Chi classes every Wednesday at 1 of 6 different scenic locations throughout Muscatine. No experience required and it’s FREE! Come out and join many of your friends and neighbors each Wednesday this summer and start experiencing a fun, new alternative to better health! For more information call Muscatine Physical Therapy Services at (563) 288-6787 and ask for Caleen or Barry.

Iowa Great River Road Corridor Management Plan Update

The Corridor Management Plan for the Iowa Great River Road is being updated, and assistance from the community of Muscatine is requested. As a stakeholder of the Iowa Great River Road, we have the ability to help shape the future of this important travel destination. As a community or business member please plan to attend the Muscatine session being held on Tuesday, April 24 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Riverview Center, 110 Harbor Drive, Muscatine. Meetings will last 90 minutes and will explain the planning process and gather initial input. "The Iowa Great River Road is a world-class destination for travelers with its abundant natural and cultural resources, international history, and many recreation opportunities. It's also a great place to live, work, and play. For over a decade the Iowa Great River Road has attracted millions of dollars in federal, state, and local funding because of this appeal. Now the Commission needs all of its stakeholders to help plan the Great River Road's next chapter of growth and effectiveness."

- John Goodman, Chair, Iowa Mississippi River Parkway Commission

IowaGreatRiverRoadBenefitsandBackground Since its designation by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation as one of only 150

National Scenic Byways in the United States, Iowa Great River Road projects have been awarded nearly 8 million dollars in grants throughout the 10 Iowa counties which border the Mississippi River. Projects supported by these grants include the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, the Clinton County Eco Tourism Center, the Louisa Interpretive Center in Louisa County, the restoration of the Fort Madison Depot, the expansion of the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center in Dubuque, the marina in downtown Guttenberg, and a variety of trails and bike paths. The Iowa Great River Road is managed by the Iowa Mississippi River Parkway Commission, an organization created by the State of Iowa to steward and promote the route. The Commission's members each reside in one of the 10 Iowa Mississippi River counties and are appointed by the Governor. The Iowa Great River Road is an important segment of the 10-state, 3,000 mile long national Great River Road meandering on both sides of the Mississippi River from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. The National Mississippi River Parkway Commission and the Great River Road were established in 1938 under President Franklin Roosevelt.

What's a "corridor management plan" and why is it being updated? A Corridor Management Plan is a written document which outlines the vision for the Iowa Great River Road and guides a wide range of activities including resource protection, marketing, partnership organizing, and strategies for sharing the unique culture and history of the area.

It outlines key goals and objectives, implementation strategies, and timelines for completion. A 326 mile-long National Scenic Byway, the Iowa Great River Road connects and supports a diverse array of stakeholders. A carefully-crafted Corridor Management Plan can help these stakeholders work together, join forces on related projects, and avoid the conflicts that occur when different organizations, groups or government agencies are planning without consulting one another. The Iowa Great River Road's original Corridor Management Plan was written in 2000, and needs updating to reflect contemporary opportunities and challenges, and to outline practical and innovative strategies to ensure the long-term vitality of the Iowa Great River Road. An updated Corridor Management Plan is also a critical document which supports a variety of grant applications from organizations and agencies. A carefully-crafted document which reflects broad-based stakeholder input can be a valuable tool when applying for state, federal or foundation funding.

The health care needs of our community are increasing, and Trinity Muscatine is growing with us.In mid-April, the hospital will break ground on an $18.5 million facilities expansion.

Through this expansion, our patients will have increased access to technology and an overall better patient experience. When life-threatening emergencies occur, the distance to medical care can have a big impact on patient outcome. Trinity Muscatine is here to provide such life saving support as we deliver the best outcome, every patient, every time.

Trinity Muscatineis expanding!

Why the extra space? The last facilities renovation to Trinity Muscatine was in 2007,but an aging population and increased demands fromyounger community members have us looking ahead.New improvements in 2012 will focus on four primary areas:

Trinity Muscatine by the numbersHow Trinity Muscatine improves the health of your community

• Emergency Department – Last year we treated just under 15,000 patients. By 2017 we anticipate we’ll be serving 20,000 annually. Our new Emergency Department will double in size and include space for a meditation chapel for patients and family reection.

• Radiology Department – In 2011 over 34,000 exams were completed, and this area has seen growth the last 10 years. Space limitations have caused MRI services to be delivered in an alternative facility next to Trinity Muscatine. A renovated and enlarged Radiology Department will bring MRI’s and bone density testing in house.

• Surgery Department – Smaller operating rooms have limited the ability to bring in newer, larger technology that is needed for more complex surgeries. In 2011, Trinity Muscatine performed over 3,200 surgeries. That number is expected to grow to over 4,300 by 2017. New renovations will allow for four large state-of-the-art operating rooms, equipped with improved lighting, computers, ultrasound equipment, and the latest medical technology.

• Laboratory Department – Completed tests last year surpassed 286,000 and an increase in 15,000 tests alone is expected for 2012. The new lab facilities will include two new service areas and have an overall emphasis on patient privacy.

• $5 million a year in uncompensated care to the Muscatine community• 500 staff members• 37 medical providers• 80 inpatient beds • $18.5 million planned renovation • Over 200,000 patient visits annually
