Andrew Goodwin theory in steps

1. Each genre of music has it’s own conventions that can be seen in the video. (e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in hip hop).

An example of this would be the boy band ‘Big Time Rush’ as in many of their music videos they always have a new dance routine as due to them being a boy band I think they are in some way obliged to take on the dance routines to make the music video more entertaining for the audience.

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images. (Either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

This is shown in the music video ‘Are you gonna eat that’ by Rhett and Link where the lyrics are ‘are you gonna eat that’ which has a perfect relationship with the visuals as the two are actually eating everything they can find. I think this creates the simplicity that some people look for in music videos instead of over complicating lyrics and visuals like some music videos do, the use of the lyrics in their music video is effective as it make the music video enjoyable and funny to watch.

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

This is represented in the music video ‘The Hills’ by the weekend as the tone and atmosphere of the visuals which is the man walking down the dark road by himself with blood on his face feeling confused really reflects that of the music which has quite are dark tone to it and so amplifies the visuals seen by the audience as they can understand the music video more, for example the audience would find it very odd and unconventional if they heard the song and then saw the music video as a colourful happy one as it does not go with the theme.

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

There are many music videos that include lots of close ups, but one example is the artist Justin Bieber who is known to always have close ups due to his confident personality and producing songs close to him, so close ups create a personal view towards the audience.

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

Similarly, some of Bieber’s music videos contain voyeuristic treatment of the female body for example in his new music video ‘What do you mean?’ the female in the music video is displayed in a very voyeuristic way to denote Biebers love.

6. There are often intertextual references (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

In ‘The hills’ music video by the weekend it is evident that there is a movie reference to the ‘The hills have eyes’, I think an intertextual reference is used to create more meaning behind the lyrics for example with the lyric in this music video, it is referenced to the Hollywood hills.

Eminem is another artist who uses intertextual references in many of his music videos such as ‘Rap God’ where he references ‘The walking dead’, this would be used because of his personal likes which one of them are ‘The walking dead’

How far do I agree with this theory

I agree with all of the aspects of this theory as they all make sense as to why they would be in music videos such as and especially the relationship between the lyrics, music and the visuals as they all perfectly work together due to the fact most artists don’t jut create lyrics for nothing but they have a vision of what they want to have before hand.

However, aspects like voyeuristic treatment of women isn’t always the case and cant necessarily be concluded like this as men can also be voyeuristically treated. And intertextuality also doesn’t always make an appearance in songs.
