Bunny and Eloise Pearl entered the world of

Andalusian horses while on a trip to Spain with the

International Committee of the Houston Livestock

Show and Rodeo.

There they saw Andalusian horses in all types

of exhibitions that included four-in-hand hitches. They

had been breeding and showing Miniature horses for

many years and were quite active in the driving divi-

sion, from singles to four-in-hands. They decided on

the spot that they wanted one of these beautiful, excit-

ing horses. While they were in Spain they purchased

the gelding Saleroso 9. As they say “the rest is histo-

ry”. Saleroso 9 has won many National

Championship titles in harness as well as

under saddle, including two Native Tack

and Attire Championships (the only times

he was shown in this division). They added

a second horse, that they purchased in

Costa Rica, to their “show herd” but short-

ly afterwards decided that it was time for

them to retire from the show world. This

departure has not diminished their enthusi-

astic support of the breed and the IALHA.

Often our greatest supporters are

breeders. Bunny and Eloise never intended

to be breeders of Andalusian horses. They

just wanted an Andalusian horse to love

and admire in their back yard.

Eloise and Bunny have been

staunch supporters of the IALHA from the very

beginning of their love affair with the

Andalusian horse. They immediately became

known because of their enthusiasm and support

for the breed and the Association. The Pearl’s

always seemed to seek out new admirers, spec-

tators, owners and exhibitors. They always

made them feel welcome and assisted in any

way they could, from information about the

breed, to helping the new exhibitor find their

stalls, office, etc. They realized the need for a regional

Andalusian horse club and were the driving

force in organizing, and the creation of, the

Southwest Andalusian and Lusitano Horse

Club.

When they thought about the lack of a High

Point Award for the youth at the National Show they

donated a perpetual trophy and had smaller ones made

so each year the winner also has a trophy that they can

keep forever. Typical of the Pearls, they did not want

any recognition for it, so it is given in the name of their

trainer.

They were responsible for introducing thousands

of people to the Andalusian horse at the Houston

Livestock Show and Rodeo by bringing exhibits and

information on Andalusian horses, directly from

Spain.

Pedro Salas, long-time breeder of Andalusian

horses, made a last-

ing mark on the

Andalusian breed in

three countries: his

native Spain, the

United States, and

Australia.

Those fortu-

nate enough to have

visited La Lomita,

the 600-acre

California paradise

in San Luis Obispo,

California, where

Pedro Salas’s 60

m a g n i f i c e n t

Andalusian and Spanish Arabian horses grazed along-

side herds of Hereford and Brangus cattle, are unlike-

ly to ever forget the

experience. The same

might also be said for

those fortunate few from

the IALHA who have

visited Ses Rotes Stud,

his ranch on the Island of

Mallorca in Spain.

Pedro Salas start-

ed breeding Andalusians

in the mid 1960’s, pur-

chasing his initial foundation stock from the well-

known Tabajete ganadería (studfarm) in Jerez, Spain.

In 1974, he purchased La Lomita Ranch, a year later

importing additional foundation stock from his fami-

ly’s Ses Rotes Stud on Mallorca to the United States.

Long-time members of the IALHA may well

remember Sr. Salas’s ‘Decade of Champions’. Indica S

(1980) and Caprichoso S (1982) set the stage for a

slew of wins, with Pedro Salas taking home 6 National

Championship titles in five years, including four

National Champion Mares in four consecutive years

(1982, Kiva S; 1983, Oriana S; 1984, Patricia S; and

1985, Elegancia T).

Thirteen years after the initial purchase of La

Lomita, Pedro decided to concentrate on breeding

horses at his Mallorca ranch, and the California facili-

ty bid adieu to this

fine horseman, but

not before he left his

mark on yet another

continent: Australia. Pedro Salas

exported a stallion

named Bodeguero

and some mares

from Ses Rotes to

Australia to found

the Spanish

Andalusian as a

breed on that conti-

nent. Many

Andalusian horses in

Australia today trace back to this original importation

and carry the blood of Salas horses into the future.

The IALHA is

proud to recognize Pedro

Salas’s contribution to

our breed and our

Association with this

dedication of the 2008

National Show to his

memory. We would like

to thank his daughter,

Marieta Salas, for pro-

viding the biographical

information for this tribute.

The United States Equestrian Federation

(USEF) licenses all judges for IALHA competi-

tions. Currently, there are only 31 judges who

have completed the multi-step process of becoming

fully licensed to judge USEF-sanctioned IALHA

shows. USEF distinguishes between recorded judges

(starting level, known as small “r”) and registered

judges (final level, known as large “R”).

The first step in becoming a judge involves apply-

ing for a Learner Judge permit. All Learner Judges

must be Senior Active Members of USEF and be at

least 21 years old. Having obtained a Learner Judge

permit, aspiring judges must serve (at their own

expense) at a minimum of three different USEF

Andalusian/Lusitano competitions, under a minimum

of three different Andalusian/Lusitano judges, within

the three-year period before they complete their appli-

cation. At each of these competitions, the Learner

Judge is evaluated by the official under whom he/she is

working. This confidential evaluation is sent directly to

the USEF. Learner Judges are strongly encouraged to

seek out experiences outside their geographic region to

provide them practice with a greater variety of

horses/riders. In addition, each Learner Judge must

attend a USEF Andalusian/Lusitano Judges’ clinic

before applying for small “r” certification. A written

test is given at the clinic which must be passed with an

85% or better. The clinics are usually held once a year,

and are announced in the USEF magazine, Equestrian.

Once Learner Judges have completed the learner

judging and clinic requirements, they send in an appli-

cation for small “r” status. At this point, the USEF

sends out evaluation/reference forms to all members of

the USEF Andalusian/Lusitano Committee as well as

to any references listed on the applicant’s paperwork.

Before an application is considered complete, a mini-

mum of ten forms, with an evaluation of the applicant

must be received. Of those, at least one must be a rec-

ommendation received from a member of the USEF

Andalusian/Lusitano Committee.

Once all materials have been submitted, the USEF

Licensed Officials Committee votes whether to grant a

license, based on all information received. This com-

mittee meets three times each year. If the person is

granted small "r" status, the new judge still may not

officiate alone at a licensed show unless he/she secures

a "Special Judge" card, which costs around $55 per

show. After judging two licensed competitions, the

small "r" judge may apply for registered large "R" sta-

tus. The application process for large "R" is very simi-

lar to the process for small "r". To maintain their judg-

ing status, all judges must attend a USEF/IALHA judg-

ing clinic every five years and pass a written test with

an 85% or better.

If one aspires to be a judge, it is important to weigh

out the driving motivation. Making money should not

be a primary factor if you expect to judge a breed that

is relatively small in numbers with a limited number of

shows per year. Judging may be a good endeavor if you

are an experienced horseman, highly ethical, and well-

educated in the breed and disciplines. Like many

judges, you may find personal satisfaction in providing

quality judging, which ultimately has influence in the

future direction and success of the breed. Judging also

provides the opportunity to do some traveling and meet

many wonderful horses and horsemen/women.

Gary Mullen recently received his Large R judge’scertification.

The Andalusian crossed to just about every other breed

can also be known by other names as they quite often

have dual registrations. They all share the common

I'd like to introduce you to the Half Andalusian

that is also known as the Spanish-Norman. They are

usually a Purebred Andalusian stallion crossed with a

Purebred Percheron mare and occasionally a Spanish-

Norman crossed back to a purebred Andalusian stallion

or mare.

The Spanish-Norman was conceived by Allan

and Linda Hamid of Hamid Hill Farm Ltd., Woodbury,

Ct. who share a love of the Andalusian Horse and the

History of the Medieval Warhorse. After research at the

University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Center showed

that both the Percheron of France and the Andalusian

of Spain or the Lusitano of Portugal shared common

blood markers, they decided in 1991 to re-create the

now extinct Medieval Norman War Horse as a modern

Sport Horse and the Spanish-Norman Horse Registry

was born.

The Andalusian/Percheron, Spanish-Normans

possess natural collection, bone density, size between

15.2 and 17H, and athleticism but with beauty and ele-

gance that enables them to compete in almost every

discipline. They can be found presenting the Colors in

Breed Exhibitions at the Kentucky Horse Park,

Mounted Police Competitions, Reining, Dressage,

Western, Open Jumping, Eventing, Trail, Field

Hunting, Pleasure Riding, Parades, Costumed

Exhibitions, Sidesaddle Demonstrations, performanc-

es at Equine Affaire's Fantasia and in mounted

Medieval games or Reining competitions in full repro-

duction armor or Tournament garb. Quite often

individual Spanish-Normans excel at more than one

discipline or are simply a good all around pleasure

mount and companion.

Romantico HHF, bred and owned by Alan and

Linda Hamid of Hamid Hill Farms, who excels at rein-

ing in full Medieval armor with his rider Garry

McAllister, is the only US bred horse of Spanish

Descent to have won a United States Equestrian Team

ribbon. He also competed in Open Freestyle Reining at

the

Quarter Horse Congress in 1999, was chosen to have

his likeness made into a Limited Edition Breyer porce-

lain figurine in 2005 and has performed in numerous

exhibitions including Breyerfest, Equine Affaire and

the Greenwich Polo Club. Romantico HHF is the offi-

cial Ambassador of the Spanish-Norman Registry.

John Blair of Fox Gate Farms in Tivorton,

Rhode Island was impressed with the Spanish-

Norman's "natural ability, tractability and good mind"

when he competed in Open Jumper classes at the 3'6 &

3'9" levels on Guerrero aka Sir Norman of Tiverton.

Blair also noted that "Sir Norman always gives 100%

and is a brave, fun horse with a wonderful personality

who craves attention and affection from his fans."

More important than all of their accomplish-

ments and competitions is the special relationship

between horse and human that the Spanish-Norman

can evoke. It is very rare to find trained adult horses on

the market since most owners have a very deep rela-

tionship with them, preferring to develop a kinship

with their youngsters that carry throughout their life-

times.

Mantilla TCV, is a 12 year old mare competing

at Second Level in dressage. Her owner, Judy Cardella

of Colt's Neck, NJ, says, "I purchased her for myself as

a new rider at 50 years old because of her temperament

and I just fell in love with her. As a Woman who

never rode in her life until 50, Mantilla has become my

friend and partner. To me she is a horse of a lifetime

and she always draws attention wherever we go".

Victoria of Fox Run, 15 year old Spanish-

Norman mare, greets visitors from all over the World

daily at the rail of the Kentucky Horse Park's Parade of

Breeds. The majority of her fans are of the Baby

Boomer Generation and this Half-Andalusian fits their

needs. They are large, gentle horses that possess the

athleticism and Panache of the Andalusian and the easy

going work ethic of the Percheron. They provide a

steady mount with a willing temperament and true

companionship for their owners who may be rediscov-

ering their passion for horses after taking time off for

careers or raising a family.

Spanish-Normans are the perfect mount for

larger men who feel under horsed with lighter breeds,

but who also want a competitive edge with the style

and athleticism that these Half-Andalusians bring to

the arena Laura Day of Daydream Farm says, "One

thing I have noticed is that men seem to have a partic-

ular affinity for these horses. Not sure if it is their size

or the idea of a knight in full armor riding their charg-

er into battle."

The Half-Andalusian, Percheron cross, also

known as the Spanish-Norman, can and will do it all

with style and grace but above that will always be your

best friend and companion.

“What inspires me mostwhen creating an idea for apainting, are beautiful horses ina scenic background, a momentin time captured when all of the

elements come together for a splitsecond...the lighting just right, a certain lookin the horses eye, the mane and tail blowingin a beautiful shape. Something we'd all liketo see and it could happen but we rarely ifever get the opportunity to witness it. I like to

push this but not to the point of crossingover into fantasy, I want to keep it believ-able as if you could have really been there.

Since I enjoy painting fine detail, Ipaint mainly with acrylics on smoothboard. I also use colored pencil andgraphite pencil as well as some water-color, airbrush, gouache, and ink mixedin at times.”

Unique American PreservationHerd of Ancient LusitanosThrive in Natural Wilderness Setting

Beaux Arts, WA – The Foundation for the Preservation ofthe Lusitano Horse in America had its historical beginnings noearlier than August 1991, marking the retirement of Dr. ByrdeLynn Hill as a Clinical Psychologist, to seek fulfillment of life-long horse dreams.

Early curiosity and search to find ‘the perfect horse’ tobreed in America as a retirement project led Dr. Hill to theSpanish and Portuguese horses of the Iberian Peninsula. Havingtested, in her quest, the smooth, ground-covering glide of theMissouri Fox Trotter and the Tennessee Walking Horse, plus therocking-horse comfort of the Peruvian Paso, or the animationand connection of thePaso Fino, thereremained hesitating dis-satisfaction based onthe narrow range ofmovement and athleticperformance capabili-ties of these comfort-able gaited horses. ButDr. Hill was struck bythe frequent recurringcomparative referencesduring her equinesearch to always something like “just as good as anAndalusian,” or “so you won’t have to hassle importing some-thing from the Iberian Peninsula”. This actually peaked hercuriosity enough to search out information about theAndalusian breed and import her first three Andalusians fromthe remarkable ancient Terry-line Spanish Andalusians of CostaRica, plus an unexpected, unknown tag-along ‘Andalusian’mare that a friend at the Austin, Texas, transport horse-restingstopover ranch casually added to an empty transporter stall forher to ‘check out’. “This still incomparable mare, Golilla, turned out to be a ‘Lusitano’, said Hill. “It was absolutely unfa-miliar to me then in either name or bloodline. But the rest . . .as they say . . . is History . . . settling, once and for all, the des-tiny of our Lusitano Breeding Herd in America.”

Immediate, somewhat frantic informational research on the

Lusitano Horse revealed to Dr, Hill that Lusitano horses identi-fied in America apparently numbered only 19 at the time, witha rumored “less than 2000 Lusitanos existing worldwide.”These were alarming statistics to Dr. Hill, given her idealizedevaluation of her Lusitano mare, Golilla, which was based onher extensive past horse experience. This experience began withan Alberta childhood, growing up fully involved in her familyhorse ranch of fine Saddlebreds and Quarter Horses, andextended throughout her life into the horse activities that culmi-nated in the review of many American breeds while searchingfor her ideal horse to breed in her retirement. With many trou-

bling questions unan-swered, Dr. Hill’sobsession with ensuringLusitano preservation inAmerica resulted in thecreation of a 700+ acreremote horse-heavensanctuary of protected, pristine, high country, referred to as“Wilderness CanyonRanch” in the grassyplateaus above Troy,

Oregon. Here she has collected carefully-selected Lusitanobreeding stock from several European countries, as well asSouth America, Mexico and Canada. “We believe we havereproduced an ultimate world-class Lusitano breeding herd inconditions reminiscent of their native homeland,” said Dr. Hill.

Today, 15 years later, over 150 purebred Lusitano horsesroam reaching open meadows with naturally created waterwaysand prepared wooded areas especially groomed for safe equineprotection and shelter in both summer and winter climates.

The Lusitanos’ Iberian cousins, the equally-beloved Terri-line Andalusians also bred on Dr. Hill’s ranch in much smallernumbers, because no endangerments risk depleting their num-bers worldwide. They roam and cavort together with theLusitanos in harmony and contentment. “It is often difficult totell the horses of the separate bloodlines apart,” said Dr. Hill,

Continued on page 36

36 ANDALUSIAN Issue 4, 2008

“except for the experienced eye recognizing how theAndalusians show off their exquisite looks, with thick flowingmanes and tails, and proud regal demeanor.”

Lusitano production at the Ranch leans toward the ancientVeiga family formula of “form fol-lows function” with breeding for pro-duction of Lusitanos most suited, focused and athletically able to han-dle the demanding performance taskslikely to be assigned to them; be itbullfights, intense athletic competi-tion, or difficult working stock hors-es. For example, Dr. Hill describesher Veiga-bred Lusitano Stallion,Halconero, within short months afterbeing purchased out of the MexicanBullfights, (and after spontaneouslyjumping even the 5’ ranch elk fencesso he could randomly ‘visit theladies’) ‘Hawk’ was promptly dis-patched to Dr. Hill’s Canadian friend,Jim Ifco of Canada’s Olympic Jumping Team, who immediate-ly started Hawk in Show Jumping training and competition atSpruce Meadows near Calgary. . . competing him through theCanadian circuit. . . all the way to qualifying for Worlds in this, his first jumping season, in a storm-and-hail-plagued round atEdmonton’s Northumberland Park. Dr. Hill relates, “with Hawkcalmly stepping up to the starting gate while all other lined up,‘starting’ show-jumping horses were peeling off in lightning, thunder and hail panic. Hawk calmly completed his full roundundeterred by golfball-size hailstones bouncing off him hisentire round, while other seasoned jumpers scrambled, whin-nied and refused while dragging dismounted riders. Nothingfor a bullfighter! Certainly right up the alley of noble VeigaWarrior ancestry.”

“While these superbly athletic horses with their large con-vex heads and sloping ‘rear-end-drive’ croups initially mayappear perhaps less attractive alongside our gorgeous Spanishbred cousins, this rounded “Iberian Factor” head is reported tobe somehow coupled with the athletically sloping ‘rear-end-drive’ croup that Portuguese Veiga family breeders havedescribed to us as ‘The Iberian Factor’ that seems somehow toensure and increase their superb athleticism,” Dr. Hill furtherexplained. “These Portuguese Lusitano horses seemed sounknown and unrecognized in America when our Lusitanoquest began with Carpe Diem’s first Lusitanos competing innational open FEI and CDI all-breed Dressage, Show-Jumping,and Reining competitions, seemed so unfamiliar to CompetitionJudges that they might discretely inquire of me ‘Luso-who?Luso-what?’That, of course, has all changed in 2008, thanks tothe Lusitanos’ display of their own unique characteristics ofnobility, courage, focus and dependability witnessed in the 2008Olympics.

Dr. Hill explains, “If you consider the Lusitano as original-ly among the bravest of the ancient Warrior Horses. . . justimagine that way back then, the rider had to enter a battle thatcould take his life. . . with a shield on one arm. and wielding asword with the other. Just how do you manage to control yourhorse like that? The horse and rider had to act as one unit. Thehorse had to be intuitive, responsive, athletic, comprehending

and totally connected, for either horse or rider to survive. Itmakes it easy to imagine how the Centaur-image emerged inthose ancient situations. These distinct survival characteristicsand superbly ‘connected’ athletic responsiveness that didn’t

require the rider’s hands or arms, sooccupied in ultimate battles, alsoseems to shape some of the founda-tion of the ‘Pegasus’ myth becauseof the extraordinary leaping andhang-time abilities required to pro-tect accompanying footsoldiers fol-lowing closely behind the horsebrigade in pitched battles. It’s easyto imagine these equine qualities ofcourage and soaring spirit becomingthe ‘oneness with rider’ thatLusitanos now contribute to world-wide equestrian events. We are sopleased to be part of the preservationof Lusitanos.”

Carpe Diem Farm is located inTroy, Oregon and is committed to the preservation of theancient Lusitano horse. Those interested in learning more areinvited to visit websites at www.Lusitano-USA.com

and www.WildernessCanyonRanch.com .

“Dr. Bryde Hill, owner of Carpe Diem Farm, has beenbreeding Lucitanos since 1993. She was interviewed by author,Nathan Kositsky, who is an Emmy award winning director anduniversity professor in communications and research.”

Canada’s National Champion Andalusian Show &

Fiesta of the Royal Horse Hosted by PAALH

July 24-27, 2008, top Andalusians from Canada

and the Pacific Northwest, traveled to Chilliwack, BC,

bringing the beauty and talent of this classical breed for

all to enjoy.

Our program intertwined the ancient art of working

equitation, traditional costume, with modern disci-

plines such as dressage, jumping, English/Western

Performance. We offered something for all, from fun

foal trail and vintage rider classes, to the awesome

Canadian National Champion Mare and Stallion.

The weekend hi light "Fiesta of the Royal Horse",

was held Saturday evening. A full house of approx.

2,000. were enthralled by beauty and talent of our his-

toric breed, displayed through Classical Dressage,

Garrocha (a method of testing fighting bulls from

horseback), Flamenco Dance , Charro , Musical

Freestyle, Liberty and Stunts. Prior to the Fiesta, our

visitors shopped amongst the retail/artisian booths, not

missing their opportunity to bid on the numerous silent

auction items. Including breedings to National

Stallions, resort vacations, and our top prize, an Azteca

colt, auctioned live to a very lucky young girl.

Visiting old friends, making new, and having fun,

was high on the venue. Annual stories, photos and

horse tales were exchanged during the Thursday wel-

come Wine and Cheese party, Friday Fajita night, and

Saturday Sponsor lounge. Heartfelt thanks to all our

Sponsors, close to 50 volunteers, donations, and

exhibitors. You are too numerous to name, but due to

you this show is possible for all to enjoy.

The International Andalusian & Lusitano

Horse Association is an association of breeders,

owners and aficionados of the ancient and magnif-

icent Andalusian Horse. We hold true to the long

and glorious history of this breed and acknowledge

the original Andalusian bloodlines which includes

horses from both Spain and Portugal.

We maintain a registry for Purebred

Andalusians and Half-Andalusians, publish a mag-

azine about them, provide shows for them and gen-

erally promote their unique qualities to the world.

We are also the official representative of the

Lusitano Horse (the modern breed of Andalusian

in Portugal) in the USA and Canada.

IALHA Riding ProgramThe IALHA Recreational Rider

program rewards member achivement

outside of the show ring. Members

accumulate hours riding on the trail,

schooling horses, and riding for the

pure joy of being with their

Andalusian. Recognition is provided

at 100, 250, 500, and 1000 hour mile-

stones.

About the Program

It's the time you spend out of the

spotlight that matters most to you and

your horse: Trail riding with friends,

practicing to improve your form, tak-

ing your niece for a ride in your cart,

having a lesson with your instructor.

That time matters to the IALHA

too. So we have created the

Recreational Rider Program for those

who ride for the pure pleasure that is

the Andalusian experience.

Through the Recreational Rider

program you log the hours you spend

riding (or driving) your horse. Once

you reach milestones along the way,

the IALHA will recognize your

achievement with awards.

The Rules:

The Rider (or driver): The rider

must be a member of the IALHA at

the time the hours are logged. A one-

year lapse in membership in the

IALHA will require re-registration

(and resetting of hours).

The Horse: The horse must be an

Page 91: Andalusian Magazine Issue 4 2008

IALHA registered full or half-bred Andalusian

owned or leased by the rider in accordance with

IALHA rules.

The Time: Riders log the time spent riding or

driving their horse (on the honor system) in half

hour increments on an official log form. Only time

spent mounted counts toward the total. Grooming,

trailering, ground work and other

horse activities do not count. Also

time spent riding in competition or for

pay does not count toward the total.

How to Participate:

Fill out the enrollment form and

submit it to the IALHA along with the

$35 one-time registration fee.

Then, use the Log Sheet to keep

track of your time. You may want to

keep one log as a master for making

additional copies or download just

download new forms here. Once you

have completed a log sheet, tally the

total for each column and then add

that to prior forms for the program

total.
