Don’t Miss Your Opportunity to Show!

Page 10: Andalusian Magazine Issue 1 2009

10 ANDALUSIAN Issue 1, 2009

In this first issue of The Andalusian for2009, I would like to acknowledge the con-tributions of six people who have servedpreviously in leadership roles within theAssociation but are taking a well-deservedbreak to enjoy membership without theburden of leadership this year.

Have you enjoyed seeingthe ‘This Horse Will ChangeYour Life’ advertisements inmagazines and watching peo-ple’s faces light up when theyfind out they can get a freeAndalusian poster merely byrequesting one from theoffice? We can thank PatBrennan, who retired from hisrole as IALHA Treasurer in2008. As Chair of the MarketingCommittee, Pat was instrumental in helpingthe Association form a clearer advertisingcampaign, work from which the 2009Marketing Committee will draw as theymake plans for how to continue to advancethis legacy. I clearly remember Pat’s smileas he explained his goal with theAndalusian poster give-away. “I want tohave an Andalusian poster in hung on thewall of every horse-crazy child out there,”he explained. “I want them to dream not ofhorses in general, but of Andalusians.” Hisgoal appears to be well on its way to beingrealized. The posters have become one ofthe largest draws at Andalusian informationbooth at Horse Expos and publicity eventsacross the regions.

Participated in a local Andalusianhorse show in the past few years? You’vebenefitted from Susan Cooper’s behind-the-scenes work, probably without evenbeing aware of it. To ensure that membersfrom all regions had equal opportunity toqualify for the National Show, Susanworked hard with the Show Committee toinstitute procedures for having local showsapproved, providing the list of requiredclasses – which helps give every member ofIALHA the opportunity to qualify for everyclass offered at Nationals. She also createddocuments to help guide local show man-agers through the process of putting on anA-rated USEF show. She single-handedlysaved the IALHA thousands of dollars overthe years by removing the old year’s datefrom all unused National show ribbons andreplacing it with the new. Updating the rib-bons, taking inventory, and orderingreplacements was a task that stretched out

over several days of work; Susan was quickto explain why she had started this job. “Iwas shocked,” she said, “when I found outthat they used to just throw the unused rib-bons away at the end of the show.” WithoutSusan to head up this task, you can bet

we’ll be looking for someone else willingto donate their time and risk hand cramps tocontinue this tradition of economy.

Although her contributions have runthe gamut from writing articles for TheAndalusian magazine, filling in as secretaryfor the Association when called upon, tohelping organize fund-raising events for herregional club in California, NancyNathanson’s greatest legacy to the IALHAmay be her service as a member and chairof the USEF’s Andalusian / LusitanoCommittee. She helped coordinate thewriting and revising of the rules by whichour horse shows are governed. Anyonewho has read through the A/L Division sec-tion of the USEF rulebook understands justhow monumental this task has been.

Gareth Selwood first presented theidea of becoming an affiliate of USEF tothe Board. The USEF affiliation has pro-vided our Association with a codified set ofrules, clear processes for judge training andlicensure, and the opportunity to collabo-rate with other breed associations toadvance horse competitions across theUnited States. Through the Horse of theYear program, members from all regionshave the opportunity to compete for year-end recognition in both pure and half-Andalusian divisions. Gareth’s efforts inthese areas have paved the way for breedersto track the point-earnings of their stallion’sprogeny, useful information for mare own-ers as well.

Nadine Tilley’s major contributionsover the years include the bronze trophiesthat have been awarded at the NationalShows, these were the result of Nadine’sefforts. Not only did she pay for the origi-nal sculpture work that is the basis for each

of the trophy styles, she also negotiatedprices for the artwork well below marketvalue and herself transported all the tro-phies to Fort Worth, Texas, each year so theAssociation wouldn’t bear the cost offreight. Many of the horses who got their

show-ring debut as part of thefuturity program, started andfor many years run entirely byNadine, have returned to cap-ture National titles. Of course,Nadine’s contributions go farbeyond the trophies and futu-rity program; over her manyyears of service to IALHA,she has served on almostevery committee we have.

A fixture at Board meet-ings, show clinics, and IALHA events ofmany sorts, Bruce Howard has shared hisexpertise and passion for Andalusiansthrough his service on many committeesover the years as well. Many times over thepast couple of years, Bruce’s memory ofprevious Board decisions and varied expe-rience has helped us navigate potentiallytreacherous water. I, personally, will missthe clear thinking he so clearly showed atevery meeting in which I participated withhim.

Change in leadership is an inevitablepart of every institution. It is perhaps evenmore expected in an Association such asours that leans so heavily on volunteers tofulfill our mission. Rushing forward, how-ever, without remembering those who haveserved in the past and turning to them fromtime to time for guidance, would not onlybe unwise, it would be foolhardy. Pleasejoin us in thanking the many volunteerswho have served IALHA in the past.

Although we have highlighted only sixrecent leaders here, we know there are hun-dreds of people to whom the IALHA owes adebt of gratitude. If there is a member inyour region who has risen ‘above andbeyond’ to contribute to the Association, toreach out to new members, and to sharetheir knowledge of the Andalusian withnew-comers to the breed, please pass theirnames along to President Julie Alonzo([email protected]). We would love tohave the honor of recognizing the contribu-tions of members from each regionthroughout the year.

2008 IALHA National Championship Horse Show October 13- 18

Fort Worth, Texas wasonce again the destination ofchoice for the Andalusianowners, trainers and breeders

who work hard all year long toward thegoal of competing at the IALHANational Championships. This year, theshow was dedicated to three greatambassadors of the IALHA. PedroSalas, one of the world’s most renownedbreeders of the Andalusian horse andone of the first to compete on theIALHA circuits and Bunny and EloisePearl, who through their generosity andenthusiasm have contributed greatly tothe association.

Monday started the schedule offwith a full slate of qualifying classes forthose who wanted some extra time in thebig ring or for those who, for whateverreason, had not yet qualified for theNational show. Local judge, artist andnovelist, the Honorable Helen Hoganofficiated throughout the day in all divi-sions. Her enthusiasm for the breed andkind remarks were appreciated by alland especially some of our youth whowere at their first Nationals.

Tuesday marked a first in IALHAshow ring history, when the day began“on the triangle” with theDressage/Sport Horse in hand divisionin the W.R. Watt arena. The HonorableMr. Thomas A. Poulin of St. Charles,Illinois made his choice from the entriesshown as they calmly executed therequired pattern at the walk and trot. Thetriangle is often used in Keurings andInspections of other breeds as well asour own in Spain, Portugal and Brazil. The classes were very well received andpromise to grow quickly in the future.Dressage performance classes began at1:00pm in the John Justin Arena.National Champion rides flowed nicelyall afternoon with USEF Steward andTechnical Delegate Cindy Reid watchingclosely as Whizzer Baker managed theshow with his usual expertise, despitethe absence of his wife and businesspartner Kathi Baker, who had to stayhome in Florida to recover from anemergency appendectomy. The wholestaff of Four Winds West pitched in andfilled all the gaps with Kathi availableby phone and e-mail throughout theweek.

The very successful and well attend-ed clinic schedule began Tuesday with“Complete Show Grooming” by Daveand Gloria Hennen of Kir AimAndalusians, also the recipients of theIALHA Breeder of the Year for 2008.

Wednesday morning started withhalter futurity classes for three year olds.Purses were very good this year withtop-five purebreds taking home over onethousand dollars a piece. The extramoney these classes offer is just anadded bonus to the breeders who haveinvested so much already in time, resources and emotion in the business ofbreeding horses. More NationalChampionship Halter classes filled themorning and afternoon as well as anoth-er great clinic by Bruce Howard andFrancine Dismukes on starting the Showand Traditional Carriage Driving Horseand Marc and Lisa Cardinaels from ElSueno Espanol on Native tack andAttire.

The Wednesday evening sessionbegan with a parade of the DressageChampions from Tuesday. The elegantriders and their equine partners turnedout one last time to cherish their victo-ries in bright white wraps and polishedboots and tack. Rick Osteen was on handto capture all the show’s moments withhis camera while Lavoy Shepards videoteam, Classic Video, did the same inmotion and sound.

National Championship perform-ance classes followed the Parade inmany divisions for both the purebredand half-bred horse. None of these class-es could have been offered without themany generous Patrons and Sponsorswho gave freely so as to ensure a suc-cessful event. John Brown of Bradenton,Florida was the driving force behind thegreat response we had in Patron fundraising this year and for that we thankhim sincerely!

Thursday Brought us to the finalHalter titles in the morning for thePurebred Junior and Senior ChampionMares and Stallions followed by thevery popular Amateur to Handle classeswhere the owners get a chance to showoff with their own or friends’ horses.

Showmanship in Hand for our youthexhibitors was another first for theNational Show that promises to growquickly and will probably need an age

split in the not so distant future. Thisyear’s entries did a remarkable job and area great tribute to our association and theirparents and trainers. Speaking of greattrainers and the Youth ofIALHA….Lauren LaVine, IALHA’s 2008Horsewoman of the Year, followed in theafternoon with a most informative clinicand Q&A on Equitation for youth atten-dees while Bill and Diane Calderon ofIberian Connection gave their view andexpertise on traditional tack and attire.

Thursday evening’s session beganwith the Parade of Halter FuturityChampions taking their final victory lapand ensuring the world that the breed’sfuture is secure with such quality and tal-ent in our young American bred horses.

Competition was deep in all theevenings’ classes with special attentionand recognition going to the CarriageDriving, Dressage Suitability and Libertyclasses where the horses truly gaveincredible performances.

Friday’s clinics began with BenJohnson on Equine Videography andMarketing. Owner of Ben ThereMarketing and an instrumental member ofthe IALHA web committee, his expertisewas received very well by attendees.Vaughan Smith’s Halter training tech-niques were again very popular, as hismethods are well proven by his greatshow ring success and the respect hereceives by his peers, which this yearresulted in him being named ProfessionalHorseman of the Year.

The rest of the day, people spenteither visiting with the vendors and arti-sans on the mezzanine level or catchingglimpses of victory passes on the arenafloor, while some diehards seemedcemented to their seats as they watchedintently from beginning to end, each ses-sion of classes.

With the change in schedule this year,Friday night was the last chance to see anevening performance of show classes andeager spectators as the parade of NationalGrand Champions in Halter strutted theirstuff to music and applause. High Pointperpetual trophies were awarded in thearena throughout the show to the hardworking horses and exhibitors who com-peted in many shows all over the countryfor the honor of taking one of the magnif-icent IALHA awards home.

Doug Shane and Nicho Meredith, ourannouncers and masters of ceremonies, informed people that the silent auctionwould close at noon and encouragedeveryone to buy tickets for the raffle mareNadia BA as the drawing would be thatnight. Nadia BA, donated by Paul andGail Bricco had enchanted people allweek with her liberty time in the arenaand quiet time back at her stall, ensuringgood ticket sales.

The last of the clinics organized byRonnie Marroquin took place Saturdayafternoon. Kimberly Garvis, who hasspent the past few years training and com-peting in Working Equitation in Braziland has now returned to the United Stateswith the goal of helping to establish thediscipline here, presented a lecture onWorking Equitation. As our newly electedShow Chair, Ronnie is working closelywith Kimberly and others on the ShowCommittee to have comprehensive rulesready for this exciting new division by2010.

The show ended, so to speak at thebeginning, as the very young Lead Lineriders were accompanied into the arena ontheir trusted steeds by proud attendants. We hope that these early experiences willhelp encourage these young riders toreturn to the show ring again and again inthe years to come..

Saturday Evening’s exhibitions of

Andalusians and Lusitanos,”From Golega

to Sevilla and Beyond” included a variety

of presentations, exhibitions, and opportu-

nities for those who had spent the week

showing to relax and laugh together.

.Champions from every division had the

opportunity to come out to the arena for

recognition, and Medieval Times came

through once again to support the IALHA

with their amazing acts. We are forever

grateful for their historical and constant

contributions. Joanne Asman of Asman

and Associates pulled it all together in her

usual way, working over the whole week

with everyone involved to truly make it

the night to celebrate and honor one of the

world’s oldest and noblest breeds. OURS!

With quiet majesty, Andaluz-ANG surveyed his newkingdom, the chaos of the show ring with its’ flashing cam-eras, blaring music and noisy crowd left him unfazed. Hewas a gentleman and now a National Grand Champion, andhe knew how to behave like both.

“He’s a dream to work with,” saysWarren Mather, who showed Andaluz atNationals. “He has a great mind and he car-ries himself so well.”

Jesus Villarreal, Andaluz’s owner, combed the fields and stables of southernSpain for 10 days before finding the colt.Villarreal was an admirer of Jocoso XXIand this 2-year-old colt out of AndaluzaLXXIII, was just like his famous sire. Withhis regal bearing, wonderful movement andcalm air of sophistication, Villarreal knewhis search for a stallion was over. Hebrought the young horse home to J.V.Ranch in Boerne, Texas, and knew he hadsomething special. It was only a matter oftime until others would see it too.

“I competed against Andaluz when hewas a 4 –year-old,” adds Mather. “He was

Reserve National Grand Champion in the JuniorStallion class and I knew I wanted to compete withhim when he entered the Senior Stallion class.”

At 6 years old, Andaluz-ANG is just beginning hiscareer. His next challenge will be learning the subtle art ofHaute Ecole. It should be a perfect fit for this intelligent andhandsome stallion

From the moment Di Amore’s hooves touched theground, Ryan Prince realized two things: one, she wasn’t astallion and two, she had National Champion written all overher. Ever since he was 8 years old, Prince’s dreams revolvedaround an Andalusian Stallion, but one look at this filly andhis plans changed

“I knew in my gut she was going to be a NationalChampion,” Prince says. “She had this amazing presence, a

regal bearing, like she was the princess and you shouldfeel honored to be around her

With her bloodlines, she had the right to feel like royal-ty, by Santiago and out of Kahlua, her relatives trace back tosome of the finest Spanish lines including Legionario III .But life interrupted Ryan’s plans and, forced by circum-stances beyond his control, he had to let Di Amore go.

“I sold her when she was almost two,” explains Prince. “Ikept track of her, saw her win the 2004 National ChampionCountry Pleasure Saddleseat Open class and I always wanted

her back.”As fate would have it, Prince would get

the chance to own Di once again and shewould prove his instincts were right. Seeingher win National Grand Champion SeniorMare 2008 with Bruce Howard handlingher, brought their journey full circle andeven an injury wouldn’t keep Prince fromseeing his girl earn her title.

“I drove 2000 miles with a compressionfacture in my back to see her at Nationals. She’s such an amazing horse and shebrought so many people together,” Princesays “ I’ve had so much help, I couldn’thave done it without Dave and GloriaHennen, her breeder and trainers, RayFreson and so many others. It was just avery special time.”

By Sarah EakinThe Lusitano, whose history is linked to bullfighting, the

cavalry, past European royalty and the classical equitation of theAlter Real, has evolved to become a sought after modern daysport horse. Classical equitation performed throughout Europeformed the basis for dressage as performed at Grand Prix level.Today the Lusitano is well represented at international competi-

tion level. Witness seven Lusitanos entered for the dressage com-petition at the 2008 Beijing Olympics representing Brazil,Portugal and Australia.

“Recently rediscovered, the Lusitano horse has re-acquiredthe prestige it enjoyed in the past centuries as one of the best sad-dle horses in the world,” said Paulo Gavião Gonzaga, founder ofInteragro Lusitanos of Brazil, the world’s largest breeder of the

Lusitano horse. “The growing demand, howev-er, cannot be fully satisfied by the still smallnumbers of horses and breeders around the worldand this scarcity, combined with its high per-formance in competition, turned the Lusitanointo one of the most desired sought after horsesof the moment, explaining its standing as a sym-bol of status and prestige for its owners and train-ers.”

This recent evolution can be traced back tothe 70s when the Lusitano horse was first import-ed into Brazil.

Interagro was one of the pioneers ofLusitano breeding outside the breed’s nativecountry of Portugal. The Interagro breeding pro-gram began with four mares and one stallion andin the ‘80s they upped the stakes bringing in alarge shipment of Lusitanos from Portugal.Shortly after, the borders were closed for fouryears due to quarantine restrictions and no hors-es could be imported in to Brazil. At the time DrGonzaga was laying the foundations for thebreed’s future outside its traditional roles. Whilethe deep-rooted culture of the Lusitano remainsrevered and respected inside and outside ofPortugal, it has also provided the ingredients tousher in a new era for the breed.

“It was possible and we took the time to lookreally carefully for the good breeders and thegood bloodlines that still existed in Portugal,”said Dr Gonzaga. “As soon as the ports wereopen, we imported about 70 mares (not all atonce). At that time we had about 100 – the hors-es we had in Brazil were already producing andsome mares came over pregnant.

“Now we have about 600 horses. The seasonin Brazil is from August to June. Each year wehave a new generation. So in March every yearwe have the highest number of horses. We havea fluctuation of about 100 more or 100 less. Wealways stay with a minimum of 600.”

The Lusitano has recorded successes in

many areas of modern-day equestrian competi-

tion, notably a team of Lusitano horses won the

1996 World Championship in the 'four-in-hand'

class in Belgium, driven by Felix Brasseur and

owned by Jose Manuel de Mello, president of the Portuguese

Lusitano Association. Peter Van Borst, is working with a team

and a pair of Lusitanos, stemming from the Interagro bloodlines

and owned by William Robinson of Robinson Lusitanos, Idaho.“We have high aspirations for them,” said Van Borst, who

recently moved the Lusitanos to Aiken, South Carolina – tradi-tional driving country that has taken interest in the recent arrivalof the breed. “The Lusitano has a huge heart, great stamina, won-derful reflexes and impulsion because while youcan play with the external appearance you can’tbreed heart and intelligence so easily into ahorse. That said, Interagro has the luxury ofbeing able to put together a chemistry of blood-lines.

“Interagro are also using the wonderfullydiverse gene pool that they have to produce driv-ing horses. We are hoping these horses we areworking with now will bear witness to the factthat the Lusitano has the ideal characteristics fora competitive driving horse.”

As the largest breeder of the Lusitano horseworldwide, Dr Gonzaga’s passion for the breedis clear, and his vision for their wider role ashorses under saddle for both competition andamateur fulfillment is emerging.

“You have a universe of amateurs and veryfew professionals,” he said. “This mass marketis the amateur. They have difficulty masteringthe Warmblood as they don’t have the characterthat the Lusitano has…”

Still it has taken time for the breed tobecome recognized on the world stage. While inmany ways the deep-rooted history of Lusitanobreeding has fuelled its emergence as a univer-sally talented horse, it has also dictated a conser-vative approach to its evolution.

“The Lusitano is a very interesting breed,”said Dr Gonzaga. “It has a fascinating historyand the breeders are proud of their lines. Thefirst time the Lusitano appeared in dressage – itseemed almost culturally inadmissible because itwas widely thought that Baroque was the onlyway that was valid.”

Times have changed and doors are openingto the Lusitano horse. “The Lusitano can go tothe Olympics but they can also be ridden by chil-dren,” explained Dr Gonzaga. “It is the besthorse on which to learn to ride. Training with aLusitano is much easier, much safer. It is a horsethat can do everything a Warmblood can do butit’s easier to ride and cheaper too. They are veryclever horses and they don’t forget. It takesmuch less time to teach them than other breeds.Lusitanos like people and they try to please you, which make them enjoyable for amateurs and

professionals alike.”

Dr Gonzaga sums up the breed most adeptly in his book, O

Cavalo Lusitano. “They are strong, vigorous horses, obedient,

generous of character, agile, and articulate, elegant, distinct and

arrogant, proud, lordly and noble of spirit; they are also docile,

intelligent and submissive, easy to teach for every horse activity,”

he wrote. “Such characteristics make the Lusitano the best saddle

horse in the world.”

Each year,the USEFasks each ofits breedaffiliates ton o m i n a t eone out-s t a n d i n gyouth forconsidera-tion for theUSEF YouthSportsmanof the YearA w a r d .

These young people are invited to attend theUSEF Youth Convention at the Annual Meetingand to participate in a summer seminar put onby USEF. The youth ultimately chosen as theUSEF award winner is given a lifetime mem-bership in USEF.

This year’s IALHA nominee, JoannaWayland, is a well-known fixture at Region 2events; she recently had the opportunity toexpand her circle of friends at the 2008 IALHANational Championship Show in Fort Worth,Texas. Youth Committee Chair Alison Cooperexplained that she had been well persuaded byJoanna’s application, but was even moreimpressed when she met her in person, com-menting on how humble Joanna was about hermany accomplishments.

One of the things that caught the attentionof the IALHA Board, which selects each year’snominee, was how much she had personallyinvested in her achievements. Joanna has

worked for years to pay board and upkeep onher horse (a BLM mustang mare expecting ahalf-Andalusian foal in February.) She has trad-ed stall cleaning for the opportunity to learn, and has willingly shown Andalusians and Half-Andalusians for many Region 2 members togain more experience in the show ring. She haswon numerous awards with horses she hasshown for IALHA owners Carla Shown, JoanSciacca, Julie Alonzo, Ann Beaver, CyndyStephens-Winchell, and Pedro and CindyMunoz Sanchez at shows hosted by theNorthwest Andalusian Horse Association(NWAHA) as well as Canada’s PacificAssociation of the Andalusian and LusitanoHorse (PAALH).

Her involvement with IALHA is not limit-ed to the show ring, however. In Region 2,Joanna has assisted with show preparation clin-ics for the past several years, alternatingbetween demonstrating proper equitation andshowmanship and serving as scribe for the cli-nician. In addition, Joanna has represented theIALHA at the Northwest Horse Expo threeyears running, presenting Andalusians for own-ers in the breed demonstration and helping tohost the informational booth.

In 2008, she joined forces with AlexaVolwiler, an IALHA member from Washington,to work on increasing youth involvement atRegion 2 IALHA shows. The two presented alist of suggestions at the NWAHA general mem-bership meeting in August, many of which willbe adopted by the club this year. Reflecting onJoanna’s many strengths, Alexa commented,"Joanna is always kind and helpful. She is

proactive in supporting the breed and is a verydevoted equestrian."

In Texas, besides carrying the flag for theopening ceremonies on Thursday and Fridaynights, Joanna won a Reserve NationalChampionship Title in Western Equitation onBiaritz MC, owned by Alison and SusanCooper; she showed Rancho Tres Potrillos’Hilandero X in the senior stallion halter class. She also showcased her versatility by winningboth the English and Western performance futu-rity classes on three-year-old stallion ArmaniLFA.

Joanna was delighted when she learnedthat she had been selected as the IALHA’s nom-inee for the award. With a blush of excitement, she thanked the Board for their confidence inher and promised to do her best to be a goodambassador for our Association. Those whohave had the pleasure of meeting her can offertheir assurances; she’ll do us proud.

Applications included a coversheet, fouressays, three letters of recommendation, and aresume. This year, we were particularly impressed bythe variety and strength of applications. To honor thesix youth who submitted applications for this award, the IALHA Board voted to send each of them a freeIALHA Youth or Associate membership for 2009.Youth are encouraged to look for information aboutthe coming year’s award in the summer.

If you would be interested in helping to sponsorscholarships aimed at supporting our youth, pleasecontact President Julie Alonzo([email protected]). The Youth Committee will beseeking ideas for continuing to expand the serviceswe offer to our youth throughout the year.

Andalusian horses captivatedNadine Tilley’s heart on a visit to the

Iberian Peninsula in 1972. On herreturn to the U.S., she was surprisedand disappointed not to be able to findsuch a horse available for sale. Herfirst Andalusian partner, the Garrison-bred young stallion Bilbaino III, was aChristmas gift in 1980; since then shehas never wavered in her fervor forthem.

Tilley bought her current Hemet,CA ranch in 1997, now known as hometo USC’s mascot, Traveler.

Pictured here winning 2008National Champion Vintage Rider –Western, then earning the title of 2008Reserve National Champion WesternPleasure Open with Bill Deeney, the

palomino Lusitano stallion Xar Pei VO,by Donaire out of Ordenada do Top,

was purchased by Tilley for her 60thbirthday, after watching his video.

Training and showing has been acollaborative effort by Glenn Wilson,Bill Deeney and Tilley. Xar Pei VO hasjust started driving and enjoys takinggood care of Nadine on trails. Xar Pei’sfirst foal crop is due in 2009.

The USC mascot program has beenendowed by the Tilleys. Nadine says,“We’ve set it up so that the white horseTraveler must always be Andalusian. We always have 6 or 7 Travelerprospects in training.”

At 61, Nadine’s dearest ambitionsare not yet fully realized. “Every day Ican enjoy horses and share the day withthese horses is an accomplishment. Ifeel so blessed to have them in my life.”

IALHA is proud to announce the recipients of Year End Awards for2008.

The Year End Awards program recognizes the accomplishments of breed-ers and exhibitors. Recipients are nominated by their peers, and selectedby the IALHA Show Committee. These awards take into account not onlyindividual accomplishment in the show ring, but sportsmanship, service, and dedication to the breed. The winners are not necessarily those with thegreatest accumulation of show points. Indeed, the awards serve as impor-tant recognition of the contributions of IALHA members that eclipse amere point tally.

The 2008 IALHA Year End Awards are presented to:

Congratulations to all the 2008 IALHA Futuritywinners who started planning for this moment in 2004.That’s when they looked at the mares they wanted tobreed and carefully examined bloodlines and confor-mation. The next step was to review the available stal-lions and decide which one would (hopefully) help themare produce the “perfect” foal. Breeding can be suchan exact science and yet the results are in the lap of thegods. All you can do is breed the best to the best andhope for the best.

The original IALHA Futurity nomination must bemade and paid for by Dec. 31 of the year BEFORE thefoal is born. This is when your mare looks like sheswallowed a barrel and you can hardly wait for springwhen the foal pops out. Waiting is the hard time. Is ita filly? Is it a colt?

The next payment must be made by June 30 of thebirth year of the foal. Only by now you know whetherit’s a colt or a filly and if your dreams are coming true. Each of the IALHA Regional shows have Futurityclasses for weanlings, yearlings and two-year-olds soyou can show your pride and joy in the regular classesand the Futurity classes. Payments on the nominationare made by June 30 of each succeeding year.Suddenly, there you are with a gorgeous three-year-oldin your barn planning a trip to the IALHA Nationalshow. This is the time that the rewards for a breeder’s

confidence become significant.ALL of the money generated from the nomination

fees is put into a pot and divided among the winnersof the Three-Year-Old Purebred Futurity Stallion, Mareand Gelding classes. Therefore, the amount the win-ners receive is directly decided by the number of hors-es nominated. This year the winner in each of the 2008Purebred Futurity classes received $2006.60. TheReserve winners in each class received $1700.51 andeach of the Top 5 winners in each class received$1100.33.

If a Futurity nominated colt or filly is sold, theFuturity nomination can be transferred to the new own-ers. Then the new owners are eligible to show in theFuturity classes provided they keep up the nominationpayments as scheduled.

There are two separate IALHA Futurities. There isone for Purebreds and one for Half Andalusians. Therules and the nomination fees for each Futurity are thesame. The payout for the winners of the HalfAndalusian Futurity is decided by the number of HalfAndalusians nominated. The 2008 winners of the HalfAndalusian Stallion, Mare, and Gelding classes eachwon $983.41 and the Reserve winners each got$737.56. The rewards for the faith you have in yourbreeding program are great.

Andres G Rodriguez has dreamtof owning his own Andalusian horsefor thirty years and when the phonecall came from IALHA NationalHorse Show manager Whizzer Bakerhe could not believe his ears. Hebought just one ticket to win his dreamhorse and he and his family could notbe happier or more excited.

On Sunday morning, October 19,

Andres with his wife, two sons, hisdaughter-in-law and a grandchild tookpossession of his beautiful mare frombreeders Gail and H. Paul Bricco ofWadsworth, Illinois.

Andres said, “I have come to theshow many times and in the past, theclosest I came to owning one is that Isat in the next row to a lady that hadthe winning ticket a few years past,”

Andres said. “This time she’s ours!”Paul helped them load Nadia into

their trailer and off she went to starther new life in Fort Worth with heradoring new family. Hopefully, nextyear she will come back with them tocompete and participate in the celebra-tion as proud owners of their firstAndalusian.

Everyone knows of the wonderfulcharacteristics of the Andalusian: beauty, brains, and athletic ability, but a lot ofpeople do not know that these great qual-ities can be passed onto their Half-Andalusian offspring. What is a Half-Andalusian? Well, it is a foal with oneregistered purebredAndalusian parent. TheIALHA considers a horse tobe a purebred if it has one ofthe following bloodlines:Andalusian (S), Lusitano (P),or what is known a PureSpanish-Portuguese (SP).The foal of two Half-Andalusians cannot be regis-tered as a Half-Andalusian,although they might be ableto be registered under otherbreed registries, so please becareful when looking to pur-chase a Half-Andalusian.

Why a Half -Andalusian?Because Andalusian horseswere thef o u n d a t i o nstock ind e v e l o p i n gmany modernbreeds andcrossing themback to thesebreeds pro-duces the bestof bothworlds. Half-Andalusiansgoal in life isto pleasew h a t e v e rhuman hap-pens to bearound themat the moment, whether it is when theyare being ridden or when a small child ispetting them. Half-Andalusians havebeen known to reach out their noses soas not to intimidate small children, whilestill allowing the child to pet them easi-ly. Their awareness of their surround-ings and the humans in their vicinity isamazing. They will rise to whatever

occasion is presented to them with brav-ery and honesty. When encounteringnew situations, they are more prone tostare at whatever is scaring them than tospook and run.

Crossing a pony breed to theAndalusian can produce a very willing

and accepting child or small adult’smount. Crossing them to a gaited breedcan produce a foal that possibly gaitswith the temperament of an Andalusian, while crossing an Andalusian to a draftbreed can reduce the size and girth of thedraft, producing a large steady mount forany rider. When crossing these horses toWarmbloods, it can refine their looks

and create a horse that is more sensitiveand easier to ride. Breeding Andalusiansto lighter horses can produce wonderfulsporthorses that excel in combined driv-ing, eventing and dressage. Half-Andalusians are athletes in their ownright, successfully competing in everytype of equestrian competition. They caneasily transition from the show ring intoa wonderful children’s mount or a steadyand willing teacher for even the mostinexperienced rider. Half-Andalusianshave successfully worked as therapyhorses while providing the careful atten-tion their special charges require. Theyare becoming more and more popular asthe riding public recognizes theirtremendous work ethic, athletic abilityand lightness under saddle, not to men-tion their beauty. Often times, owners ofHalf-Andalusians were looking for ahorse they could “really bond with” andthese horses love having a specialhuman although they are more thanhappy to work with many.

The IALHAhas developed afull roster ofclasses for Half-Andalusians tocompete in attheir shows.Many of theclasses offeredfor purebreds arealso offered forH a l f -A n d a l u s i a n s .There may alsobe classes avail-able for doubleregistered horsesto compete in;these registries

can include, but are not limited to, theAzteca, Spanish Norman, IberianWarmblood, Hispano-Arab andWarlander.

If you are looking into breedingyour favorite mare, please check into thepurebred Andalusian stallions standingat stud. Often times, the fees to breed toa mare that is not a purebred Andalusian

is significantly less than the stud fee fora purebred mare. You might be surprisedby how affordable it can be. The studfees are set by each owner individuallybased on the stallion’s show history, bloodlines and other factors, but most ofthe time a mare owner can find a verynice stallion without mortgaging thefarm.

Half-Andalusian foals are veryfriendly and inquisitive; often times theyact more like large dogs than horses. They will follow their owners aroundfields, whiny to them when they

approach, helpwith choresand, in general, just want to bewith theirhumans. Manya time, a youngfoal will run togreet thehumans at thegate leavingmom far

behind. They are easilytrained and love to learnnew tasks and are amiableto most new things present-ed to them as long as theyare treated with a kind andgentle hand. If startedunder-saddle gently, it isoften an easy task to bringto them the polish of a fin-ished show horse. It iscommonly recommendedto wait until they are atleast three to start them

under saddle, if not later depending onhow they are growing and developing.A Half-Andalusian can take a while toreach its full size, caution is recommend-ed when deciding when they are ready tostart full training.

On a final note, a warning should beattached to these horses. Once you ownone, a second one and possibly a pure-bred is in your future. One is neverenough when it comes to these magnificent horses.

The World Equestrian Games is aunique championship consisting ofeight equine disciplines held every fouryears in between the SummerOlympics.

The WEG, as it is known, attractsWorld class competitors from 60Countries as well as the US in the dis-ciplines of Dressage, Jumping, ThreeDay Eventing, Endurance, Driving,Vaulting, Reining and, for the first timein 2010, Para-Equestrian In a recentconversation with the Para-Equestriandivision of the USEF, I learned that oneof their dressage riders is in need of anappropriate mount for this competition. They would be thrilled to have spon-

sorship of an Andalusian of that caliberfor her to train with over the next twoyears and to compete with in 2010.

The World Equestrian Games werefirst held in 1990 in Stockholm,Sweden and subsequent host citieshave been The Hague, Netherlands,Rome, Italy, Jerez, Spain and Aachen,Germany.

In 2010 the WEG will be hostedfor the first time outside of Europe byLexington, Kentucky, the HorseCapital of the World. Another first isthat these games, held at the KentuckyHorse Park will be the only venue toaccommodate all disciplines in onelocation. This Championship

Competition will be held fromSeptember 25 through October 10,2010.

The IALHA will be representedwith a booth in the Breeds Pavilion. Weeagerly await the WEG Foundationdecision in the Spring of '09 to see ifwe will be chosen to present live BreedPresentations at that venue.

Breeding season is right around thecorner, so it is time to start planning, especially for those mares that endedlast season empty. With the currenteconomy, breeding efficiency is moreimportant than ever, and we all know a“problem” mare is a huge financialdrain.

A “problem” mare is a mare thathas difficulty getting in foal due to anynumber of factors including advancingage, irregular cycles, recurrent infec-tion, and repeated pregnancy loss, toname a few. Regardless of the cause, good management increases your oddsof producing a live foal, and detailedrecord keeping will be key. You alsoneed to set realistic goals; the averagepregnancy rate is in the 60% rangeunder normal circumstances and dropsdramatically for problem mares.

Heading into the breeding season, you will want to make sure your mare isin good body condition, not over orunder weight. Have your vet do abreeding soundness exam including aculture and biopsy to detect the pres-ence of internal problems, and inspec-tion of the external reproductive anato-my to determine if there are any defectsthat may decrease fertility. The mareshould have established a good cyclewith short heat periods and predictableovulation before you attempt to breedher, and if there are abnormal results onthe culture or biopsy, treatment optionsneed to be discussed with your vet andimplemented before attempting to breedthe mare.

To get your mare in foal, you andyour vet must be able to acknowledgeproblems and formulate realistic solu-tions. If your mare’s external anatomyis abnormal (normally the opening ofthe vagina is perpendicular with a tightseal), the solution may be for your vetto perform a Caslick’s procedure to par-tially close the vaginal lips. This willblock the entry of air and feces, therebylimiting the introduction of bacteria that

cause inflammation, irritation, andinfection.

An area that is often overlooked isbreeding technique. In a problem mare, live breeding is not advisable due toseveral factors. Even with propercleansing of the mare and stal-lion, higher amounts of bacteriaenter the reproductive tract withlive breeding than with artificialinsemination (AI). All mareswill have an inflammatoryresponse to semen; generally, the difference between thosethat get pregnant and those thatdo not is the severity and dura-tion of the inflammation. Toreduce the response, a minimalamount of raw semen is used(500 x 106 progressivelymotile sperm) diluted with anantibiotic containing extenderand inseminated using steriletechnique. It is very importantwhen cleaning both stallion andmare that water is used to cleanthe genitals of all debris withoutthe use of soap. Soap residue, even in small amounts, is verytoxic to sperm. Another areathat sometimes goes withoutmuch thought is the use of lubri-cants for AI. Use an amount nolarger than the size of a quarter;even non-spermicidal lubricantscan adversely affect spermmotility.

Some mares, regardless ofhow cleanly the AI is per-formed, will pool fluid in theuterus (this is visible by ultra-sound exam). This fluid is toxicto sperm if it is present beforebreeding and toxic to theembryo if it persists after ovula-tion. A very useful procedure to man-age a mare with this problem is to haveyour vet administer oxytocin about twohours before breeding and then againtwo hours after. Another procedurecommonly used is large volume uterinelavage (1 to 2 liters) using a buffered

USEF & YOU! By: Nancy Nathanson USEF A/L CommitteeChair 2005-2008

Another year is about to begin and it’s time to recap theprocess we go through as an Affiliate of USEF.

The USEF year begins on December 1. Preparations are under way for the Annual Meeting inCincinnati, Ohio.

All Affiliates have a liaison committee; ours is the A/LCommittee. This Committee is selected by USEF. ThePresident of USEF appoints the Chair of the Committees to afour-year term. The next four-year Committee will start workin March of 2009.

The Committee acts as Liaison between USEF and IALHA tooversee how Rules and Regulations apply, presenting rulechange proposals recommended by the IALHA Board toUSEF to review and approve. In many cases, USEF’s legaldepartment may alter the wording of a specific rule to com-ply with the legal requirements of USEF.

Here’s the process for rule changes:

1. The IALHA National Show Committee and theBoard of Directors generate rule change proposals beginningin January, with a deadline of the April Board meeting (Thistimeline was a result of a vote of the IALHA Board ofDirectors several years ago.).

2. Rule Change proposals approved by IALHA are thenforwarded by the National Show Committee to the Chair ofthe A/L Committee. These rules are then presented to USEFby the USEF A/L Committee for their review and action atthe January’s annual meeting.

3. Rule changes take effect on December 1 of the yearthey are presented to and approved by the USEF Board ofDirectors. For example: if a rule change proposal is made inJanuary of 2009 and approved by the Board of Directors ofUSEF in January of 2010, the rule takes effect on December1, 2010. In extraordinary cases, the rule may be made effec-tive on April 1, 2010.

In summary, rule changes take anywhere from 1 and ? to 2years to complete.

Here’s to a very successful year of competition.

through your vet, is Settle. Settle isadministered similar to an antibiotictreatment; however, it is an immune

stimulator. It helps to boost the immunesystem to fight off bacteria.

Once your mare is in foal, the goalis for her to carry to term and deliver a

live foal. The occurrence of earlyembryonic death (EED) needs to beconsidered and managed at this point. There are many factors that can cause

E E D .Many areunknown,but somecan bea v o i d e d .Make sureyour marehas propernutritionalcare; sheneeds tomaintain ah e a l t h yw e i g h twith thep r o p e rv i t a m i nand miner-

al balance. Vaccines need to be currentbefore breeding, and then during the5th, 7th, and 9th month of pregnancyshe should be vaccinated against

Rhinopneumonitis, a virus that cancause abortion. If your mare has a his-tory of EED after she has been checkedin foal, you may consider having yourvet check her progesterone level.Progesterone is needed to maintainpregnancy, and when the mare does notproduce enough on her own, she can besupplemented with Regumate to helpher maintain the pregnancy.

If you continue to have difficulty

keeping your mare in foal, she may be a

candidate for embryo transfer. Keep in

mind not all problem mares are good

candidates for embryo transfer; your

best success will come from mares that

can get pregnant but have difficulty

maintaining the pregnancy.

A successful breeding season is a

combination of good management and

teamwork with your vet to ensure your

mare is not empty at the end. When you

finally get that problem mare in foal,

the reward makes the journey well

worth it!

A highlight of the Pacific Andalusian& Lusitano Horse Association’s(PAALH) IALHA-sanctioned CanadianNational Show was the annual “Fiesta ofthe Royal Horse” held on Saturdayevening, July 26. Since its inception fouryears ago, the Fiesta’s fame has beengrowing, playing always to a standing-room-only audience of approximately2000 souls. This is a complimentaryevent; everyone is made welcome anddonations at the door they are gratefullyappreciated. People from all walks of lifecome from near and far to experience thebeauty and versatility of our belovedAndalusians and enjoy the art and culturethey represent, even if only for anevening. People love our Iberians, theirrich and ancient history, and what theycan do!

The Fiesta featured Flamenco delMar, a professional dance troupe, whichperformed in tandem with SalvadorMartinez and his Andalusian stallion.Impressive!

Another highlight included a beauti-ful musical pas-de-deux by Linda

deWilde Petersen riding Selene AC andToni Mueller on Bandolero.

Following this came thrilling per-formances of alta escuela and the everspectacular and crowd-stealing la gar-rocha, originally a method of workingcattle and testing fighting bulls fromhorseback and now an art form on itsown.

Paul Dufresne—those of us whoknow him sometimes refer to him as“poetry on horseback”—demonstratedtraditional Spanish maneuvers and hadhis stallion, Mystique’s Padrino, doing abeautiful levade on a small box! A livingstatue!

Paul’s daughter, Acacia Dufresne, gave—as always—a thrilling sight libertyriding on her half-Andalusian, Rocket.

Israel Mendez on his gorgeous stal-lion Cortez II, delighted everyone withtraditional Spanish moves. Cortez excelsat piaffe and Spanish Walk!

Charros, that quintessential icon ofOld México, were proudly represented byPedro Muñoz Sanchez on Talisman.Other exciting exercises rounded out theevening.

That is not the entire list; space does-

n’t permit, but it gives you an idea of thevariety and high caliber of these perform-ances. A huge thanks to all!

Also featured was the Parade ofChampions, showcasing our CanadianNational Champion stallion, HilanderoX, owned by Pedro Muñoz Sanchez, andthe Canadian National Championshipmare, Selene AC, owned by LindadeWilde Petersen.

Following this, Richelle Eger waspresented with the Award of Excellencefor her always cheerful and unstintinghard work, beyond the proverbial call ofduty, on behalf of PAALH.

A huge feature of Fiesta night wasthe auction of an Azteca colt, the 2008Reserve National Champion Part-BredAndalusian Colt, 4 years and under. VMFArquero was donated by Dr. Anne Starrand Brian Rehwald of ValhallaAndalusians in Crescent Valley, BritishColumbia. The winner was a very luckyyoung lady!

As you can see, this is a not-to-be-missed event for owners and aficionadosof Iberian horses! The invitation is out foryou to join us in 2009 from July 24-26 inChilliwack, British Columbia.

Hat (Sombrero)The traditional sombrero Cordobés is an

important part of the Traje Corto. Colour shouldcomplement as best aspossible the clothing colour.Men rarely wear blackhats (except sometimesin Doma Vaquera –competition – where only thecolours black, grey or brownare allowed).

Sombreros should have awide flat and stiff brim. Somecheaper versions have a narrowerand/or flexible brim and these are nottruly correct. It should be worn pulled ontothe forehead and should touch the righteyebrow and should never hang down behind the wearer. If a chin strap is used it goes under the chin, not neck.

The sombrero calañés, a small round, velvet hat with upturned/rolled brim, worn

over a cotton ‘kerchief’, is sometimesworn. The kerchief is tied in a ‘pirate’style with the knot at the back of thehead. The hat is worn slightly tilting

forwards. The ‘catite’ is similar and wornwith a kerchief, used mostly in displays.

Jacket – Riding - MenIt is usual for men to

wear the the chaquetillacampera (or Guayabera), thesame as in Vaquera. This has arounded collar and no lapelsand to be correct must havefive buttons at the front andfive on each sleeve. Note thatonly the top button should bedone up (and it is incorrect toride without the top buttonjacket buttoned). Top qualityand made to measure jacketshave a special lining, stitched sothe jacket is stiff and appearsmoulded to the body.

The Chaquetilla Paseo issometimes worn; a short jacketwith lapels, open at the front, five buttons per sleeve. Formen the colour ideally shouldmatch the trousers. Black isunpopular - all black outfits arenot considered correct, theydenote funeral wear. The Paseois worn without the buttonsdone up.Jacket – Riding - Ladies

Ladies can wear thechaquetilla campera (as Vaquera

style – see ‘men’s jackets above), or the ChaquetillaPaseo.

There are various styles ofChaquetilla Paseo (pictured) that can be

worn and differentmanufacturers havedifferent names forthese styles, forexample Macarena,M a e s t r a n z a ,Pasamaneria, and

Sevillana.Black isnot popular.

All black outfitsare sometimes consideredto denote funeral wear. Jacket - Marsellés

Worn by gentlemenand ladies. Traditionallymade from wool and worn incold weather. Double

breasted. Marsellés jackets may beworn either over or instead of theCampero or Paseo jackets and canalso be worn during competition in

bad weather.Waistcoat (Chaleco)

Should be amatching colour tothe jacket. It shouldhave five buttons atthe front and allshould be done up.

Shirt (Camisa)For men a plain (no frills or

diamante buttons) long sleeved whiteshirt is most usual and traditional, although some men are now wearingmore elaborate pleated shirts.

All buttons should be done upincluding the top button. Ladies canwear a white ‘dress’ type shirt, withfrills, diamante buttons etc. To be

absolutely correct, the sleeves of the shirt should belong enough so the cuffs are justvisible, protruding beyond thesleeves of the jacket (1.5 cm).Ruffles are permitted for womenwhen riding side saddle and wear-ing a chaquetilla.Trousers (Pantalón/Calzon)

Either Paseo (trouserswithout ‘turn-ups’) that takecaireles, 5 per leg, or Campero(trousers with ‘turn ups’) trouserscan be used.

Paseo trousers are normallythe preferred wear inclassical style.Note: Campero trousers are worn with Botos Camperos(high boots).

Paseo or Calzona trousers, with caireles, areslightly shorter than the Campero style, with the stripesof the cuff in a contrary direction to the trouser. Theseare worn with Polainas (half chaps) and botines (shortboots) or Zapato Vaquero (Vaquera shoes). Both styleshave a button up fly and no pockets.

Note: With Paseo trousers, the top two Cairelesshould pass through both sets of holes in the trousers

The gentleman is wearing;Chaquetilla campera (country jacket)

and calzon paseo (trousers withcaireles).Note: Paseo trousers areworn with either shoes (brown) orshort boots (brown), plus polainas.

The lady is wearing;Chaquetilla campera (country jacket)and calzon campero (trousers withturn ups). Note: Campero trousers

are worn with brown boots.

Either combination can be worn byladies or gentlemen.

CairelesWorn with ‘Paseo’trosers. Also worn on culottes

(although culottes are ‘incorrect’ Spanish dress and notallowed in competition). Caireles are available in a numberof designs, usually horse heads, acorns or vaquerastirrups.

Silver is the traditional colour although gold issometimes used in the Feria (not allowed in competition).Caireles come in varying qualities, with two or three sets

of horseh e a d s ,stirrups oracorns, etc

per cairele.Horse hair caireles (ideally to match the horse’smosquera) are also correct, although rarely seennowadays.Braces (Tirante)

Traditionally leather, plain or tooled (Repujadastyle). Buttoned to the trousers. There are also

many choices ofcheaper ‘elasticated’

patterns. Sombre colours aretraditional.Side saddle skirt (falda amazona)

Normally black, grey or with a grey pinstripe is worn when riding, but again thecolour can match the jacket.Worn with either chaquetilla campera(vaquera) or chaquetilla paseo (must becampera if competing in Doma Vaquera).

Side saddle skirts are worn over high brownboots. These should be high enough so no leg is exposed.Sash (Fajin), or Scarf (Pañuelo)

Should be worn around the waist, knotted, withthe ends traditionally tied onto the braces which holdthe trousers up, with no loose ends. Sometimes this is asilk scarf and normally this complements and blends incolour with the rest of the outfit, although it can becontrasting and more colourful for riding in the Feria.Red is not acceptable for competition.Boots (Botas camperos)

High boots made ofnatural leather are worn withtrousers with turn ups (calzoncampero) and must be the naturalcolour of the leather, brown, notblack.

For ‘Clásica’ style highbrown boots can also be worn, or

alternative-ly brownshoes ors h o r tb r o w nb o o t s ,t o g e t h e rwith polainas (Spanish style halfchaps).

High brown boots shouldbe worn with side saddle skirts(falda amazona), or if culottesare worn and should be highenough that you do not see bare

flesh, socks etc when riding. Blackboots are incorrect in traditional dress.Polainas (Spanish half chaps)

They may be plain, or of the tooled type (‘Huelva’style), or with white ornamentation (Repujada style).

The ‘Portuguese’ style are also acceptable, although more often these are used as everyday workingPolainas. Traditional polainas are laced up with leatherties (agujetas) and have no metal fittings.General working polainas (left) may have tab and studfixings.

Note: Polainas are worn with Paseo/Calzonatrousers (with caireles), not Campero trousers (turnups), over short boots or ‘Vaquera’ shoes (ZapatoVaquero). Full chaps (Zahones)

Many designs from plain (lisa) working style orthe discretely tooled Huelva style, to the ornamented(Repujada or artesania) style which is used only for theFeria, not competition. Chaps are usually worn overcampero (with turn-ups) trousers.
