Amazing Grace! I stand amazed at what has happened! By what can only be un- derstood as a work of the Spirit of God, the Cabinet of the Baltimore-Washington Conference has appointed me to be the Pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church. I, whom you had never met before, will move into the office and step into the pulpit of your church and a new life will begin for all of us. There is for me, and I hope for you, real excitement in this! It is like putting two elements never joined before into a test tube and watch what happens. Except it is better than that because I believe God already knows what will happen and is even now smiling upon us with blessing to watch it take place. With each step we take to- gether from July 1, 2017 onward, we will be affirming the wholeness of the Body of Christ. I who was born in Southwest Baltimore, just off the 2400 block of Frederick Avenue, raised off the Mountain Road in Anne Arundel County, educat- ed in a variety of schools and Seminaries, and shaped by ministry in seven very different congregations, come now to be the pastor of Trinity UMC composed of all of you of various backgrounds that has brought you to this place – And we will be the church together! I praise God for this sign of Gods Amazing Grace among us and fully trust that the grace that is bringing us together is fully capable of lead- ing and empowering us to do a good (maybe even a great) work together in the name of Jesus Christ. In fact, I am quite sure that God would not have gone to these measures without the clear desire to set us about His holy work. May God bless us and keep us and let Gods full blessing fill us and flow through us as Gods people called for this place and time. Blessings! Vacation Bible School Program: Hero Central – Discover Your Strength In God!

A meeting was held on Wednesday, May 24th at 6:30 pm in room 2. We dis-cussed what the program is all about and how you can help. Check out the possi-bilities where you could

use your talents to help bring this program together. If, after the meeting you feel like this isn’t for you…no problem. But, if you feel you can contribute, great; stick it out and we will all work together for the common good of the children who will be attending VBS. We will also have work-shops, so everyone will feel comfortable with the entire program.

So, put your name on the sign-up sheet, attend the meet-ings and see how you can make a difference in a child’s life!

We Care A new ministry has been added to our won-derful church, called ''Glova's Angels". Glova has provided many crocheted angels to the card minis-try over the last few years. So many happy emails have come back to me, stating how much they ap-preciate them. After many of the recipients have taken them to their jobs as a reminder of our church remembering them in their time of need. Many have put them in glass picture frames for re-membrance. Glova's Angels have been to many states and hospitals and nursing homes. We are blessed to have Glova Lowman as a church mem-ber and caring member of the Card Ministry. God Bless you Glova for all of your help in our church.

Bobbie Bien, a lay leader, and Christ’s servant in every sense of the word, who is always there providing support, rides, office coverage, count-less behind the scene help and prays for all of us.

Claire Leidy for wearing two hats and serving in two very challenging positions. Her yeoman work in SPRC of guiding our church through the transition to a new pastor has been amazing. In addition, her role as trustee secretary has seen the accomplishment of many long-standing projects. I appreciate the many hours she has sacrificed for our church.

tinue to raise money to support our outreach pro-jects. Outreach projects consist of two trips a year to the Loch Raven Veteran Hospital with donations of items collected throughout the year. These are items the hospital has requested based on the needs of their residents. We also provide monetary dona-tions to The Susanna Wesley House, The Maryland Bible Society, Helping Up Mission, The Ca-tonsville Pregnancy Center, Board of Child Care and other groups upon request. The women also pay for the Upper Room Magazine which is free to members each month. In order to continue the outreach programs we have two money raising functions each year. The annual Mother Daughter & Family Dinner held in May and the Christmas Bazaar & Craft Fair held in November. The meetings are the second Monday of each month at 11:30am.

Lay Member to Annual Conference 2017 Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference When Bishop LaTrelle Easterling pro-nounced the 233rd session of the Baltimore-Washington Conference open, she made history as the first woman to lead the 159,000 members and 1,050 clergy who make up the 628 churches of the Baltimore-Washington Conference. But Easterling’s actions were more focused on the future as she set an ambitious, faith-centered, and Spirit-driven vision for the Confer-ence during the three-day event, May 31-June 2, at the Wardman Park Marriott Hotel. During opening worship, the bishop stressed the theme of the session, “We are One: Connected in Covenant.” She preached to a spirited gathering of more than 1,550 registered members and guests, who filled the ballroom to capacity. “We are the body of Christ together,” she said. “How we choose to live out our days is our response to this covenant. … If we allow ourselves to be divided, we will lose our moral witness to the world.”

During the session’s times of holy confer-encing, members:

Voted on five amendments to the denomination’s constitution, including one that addresses dis-crimination against women and girls within The United Methodist Church. The results of these votes will be announced after all the United Methodists, worldwide, cast their ballots.

Passed a resolution to become a member of the Religious Coalition on Reproductive Choice.

Chose to participate in a conference-wide boycott of Hewlett Packard products until the company ceases to profit from the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Rejected calls for The Baltimore-Washington Conference and Mid-Atlantic Foundation to adopt stronger socially responsible investment screens and to divest from Caterpillar, Hewlett

Packard, and Motorola, three companies noted by some for their financial involvement in Israel’s occu-pation of Palestine.

Revised the conference moving policy so that retirees have the same moving benefits as active clergy.

Officially closed Centennial-Caroline Street United Methodist Church in Baltimore and Overlea Chapel United Methodist Church in Baltimore.

Adopted an $18,463,136 budget for 2018, only a 0.3 percent increase over 2017.

Slightly lowered the benevolence factor, used to de-termine apportionments, to 17.725 percent; and af-firmed a projected collection rate of 92 percent.

Increased the equitable compensation rate for clergy by 2 percent to $43,149, with the minimum housing rate remaining the same at $19,866.

In moments of celebration and remembrance, members: Rejoiced at the ordination of seven elders and the

commissioning of one provisional deacon and nine provisional elders during a service in which Bishop Ernest Lyght celebrated Jesus as the bread of life.

Gave thanks for the 617 total years of service of 24 clergy who retire July 1 at a luncheon where Bishop Forrest Stith spoke on the importance of passing the torch with purpose.

Lit candles, remembering the bishops, pastors, clergy spouses and lay people who died during the past year during a memorial service led by the Rev. Ginger Gaines-Cirelli.

Recognized, in the laity session, eight new Certified Lay Members who completed their two-year course of study.

Honored two Cabinet members: The Rev. Laura Easto, superintendent of the Baltimore-Suburban Dis-trict, who has been appointed to serve Potomac Unit-ed Methodist Church; and the Rev. Ed DeLong, inter-im superintendent of the Baltimore Metropolitan Dis-trict; and welcomed two new superintendents, the Revs. Wanda Duckett and Ann Laprade.

Welcomed new conference leaders: Christie Latona, the new Director of Connectional Ministries; the Rev. Antoine Love, who will serve as assistant to the bish-op; and the Rev. Rodney Smothers, who will become the conference’s new congregational development resource specialist.

In special offerings, collected $10,051 for Seeds of Security, a ministry to assist people leaving situations of domestic violence and $3,925 for scholarships for youth to attend the ROCK retreat.

In a district-centered Penny War, raised $814 for the Adrienne Terry Affordable Housing Fund.

In a new tradition, held a worship service recognizing the 75 clergy who are appointed to new churches this year and the lay people who will receive them.

During reports about a variety of ministries, members: Committed themselves to personally addressing rac-

ism during the Call to Action report, which outlined a new conference-wide initiative on racial justice and reconciliation.

Honored Andy Thornton, who is retiring after 30 years as director of the conference’s camping and retreat ministries.

Learned about a new resource for individual and

Page 4

youth groups created by the Conference Council on Youth Ministries called Stress Less, which addresses issues affecting young people.

Received information about how they can become more involved in the conference’s Young Adult Council, especially in the One Love creative worship experience next fall, and the expanding conference Hispanic Ministries programs.

Celebrated with conference Lay Leader Delores Mar-tin how the laity are active in ministry, with more than 1,000 lay servants and 143 Certified Lay Minis-ters working in covenant relationship with others to glorify God.

Heard from the Rev. Jim Miller of the Episcopacy Committee how last year, the BWC raised $330,740 to help build a health and wellness center at Africa University.

Statistically, in the Baltimore-Washington Conference: Membership stands at 159,048, down 3 percent from

the previous year. Worship attendance stands at 56,235, down 5 percent. Church school attendance stands at 16,416, down 4.8

percent. Professions or reaffirmations of faith for 2016: 2,643,

down from 2015 by 14 percent. Adults and young adults in small groups for 2016:

33,340, down from 2015 by 2.8 percent. Worshippers engaged in mission for 2016: 69,680 up

from 2015 by 4.9 percent. BWC churches served 1,329,942 people with ministries of outreach, justice and mercy.

— Melissa Lauber and Erik Alsgaard, Communica-tions, Baltimore-Washington Conference On the last night of the 233rd Annual Conference Bishop Easterling asked each District Superintendent to present and announce the new clergy appointments within their districts. Our new Pastor David Carter-Rimbaugh and I were honored to carry the Baltimore Metropolitan banner into the conference hall followed by our districts clergy and lay members to the Annual Conference. Pastor David and I were presented to the Annual Conference along with the other new appoint-ments from our district and the other 7 of the Baltimore-Washington Conference. After all eight districts shared their new appointments the whole Annual Conference prayed for the pastors and churches in our Conference who would be starting their new appointments begin-ning July 1, 2017. The Annual Conference concluded with the motion to assemble next year for the 234th Annual Conference at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. ,

Respectfully submitted,

Bobbie Bien, Lay Member to the Annual Conference

Let me introduce you to Nicole Johnson. I had de-sired for our folks to become acquainted with this very talented Christian lady. Like the others affili-ated with Women of Faith, Nicole has serious mes-sages yet, she provides her audiences with amazing entertainment. Only one DVD introduced her in the beginning but did not include her as a principle speaker along with the others. She is the "Drama Queen". There will be a sign up sheet in the narthex in Au-gust. Arrival time (NEW) will be from 9:30 to 10 AM with lite fare. There will be two DVDs shown followed by lunch. We encourage you to come, bring a friend and enjoy an uplifting time of fellow-ship.

Thrift Shop News

Since I took over the Thrift Shop I'm always reminded of the remarkable generosity of our members and those that live in our community. I’m thankful for the success we have had and the opportunity to help those in need. The Thrift Shop wouldn't have been a success without all of the caring and helpful volunteers keeping it going. I ap-preciate every single person who has helped and volunteered their time to make the Thrift Shop what it is today. Now that the summer is upon us we have a huge goal ahead of us. We would like to do

a little “spring cleaning” of our clothing room. We are in need of volunteers to help sort, purge and reorganize our clothing room. Our goal is to accomplish this prior to the July Flea Market on July 15th. If you are availa-ble to help with this project please contact me.

Requests:

The Thrift Shop would appreciate donations of paper towels, L.A. Awesome (found at the Dollar Store), plastic storage totes with lids (18 galloons or more) (Rubbermaid or Sterilite), and tall bookshelves.
