Global Challenges: The Future of the International OrderGlobale Herausforderungen: Die Zukunft der WeltordnungRecent developments remind us how highly the world is interconnected today. Human security, adaption to and mitiga-tion of climate change, energy markets, food security are just some of many issues calling for united global action. The focus of economic and political power tends to shift towards the East, while others still see the United States as the leading global player in the future. Europe’s role, however, seems to decline. Based on the experiences of the past years, we want to reflect whether value-based sustainable solutions are possible on the global level and if so, which values should be the basis for sustainable solu-tions. What can different actors contrib-ute to this potential new set of values? Which values demand for reflection and possible calibration to adapt them to the requirements of the 21st century? We will discuss these questions in dialogue with our transatlantic partners and also with representatives from Asia.

Die Entwicklungen der letzten Zeit erin-nern uns, wie eng die Welt heutzutage vernetzt ist. Sicherheit, Anpassung an den und Bekämpfung des Klimawandels, Energiemärkte und Ernährungssicher-heit sind nur einige von vielen Themen, die ein gemeinsames globales Vorge-hen verlangen. Der Schwerpunkt der wirtschaftlichen und politischen Macht verlagert sich zunehmend nach Osten, während andere noch immer die Verein-igten Staaten als die führende Weltmacht der Zukunft sehen. Die Rolle Europas scheint hingegen immer weiter an Bedeu-tung zu verlieren. Aufgrund der Erfahrungen der letzten Jahre möchten wir darüber nachdenken, ob wertebasierte nachhaltige Lösungen auf globaler Ebene möglich sind und wenn ja, welche Werte als Grundlage für nachhaltige Lösungen dienen sollten. Was können die einzelnen Akteure zur Entwicklung dieses neuen Wertekanons beitragen? Welche Werte müssen weiter reflektiert und an Wertesysteme des 21. Jahrhunderts angepasst werden? Wir werden diese Fragen im Dialog mit unseren transatlantischen PartnerInnen, aber auch mit VertreterInnen aus Asien behandeln.

In order to analyse the real damage that a potential cyber war or individual act of cyber war-fare could do to the citizens of any nation or society coming under attack, it is fundamental to begin with some reflections that will help us to reach a full understanding of the phenome-non and its related practical implications. Hence, in the working group, we will deepen the thoughts developed during the panel discussions with more involvement of the audience.

And finally, how can the EU position itself as a global agenda-setter instead of just following the agenda set by others?

Using selected examples, the social scientists Christian Gudehus and Sebastian Wessels invite their audience to approach these questions in a discussion about the perception of law through TV programmes.

The young Catholic priest Don Fabijan does not appreciate the Pope’s decree of allowing the partial use of condoms. He starts a personal crusade against modern day develop-ments by spreading non working contraceptives amongst the town’s people on his small Dalmatian island. The unwanted pregnancies increase and the priest happily takes on the mission to marry the couples in a proper Christian fashion. On the occasion of Croatia’s entry in the EU, we present this 2012 Croatian film in the presence of the director and open a discussion on it afterwards.

Der junge katholische Priester Don Fabijan ist wenig begeistert vom Dekret des Papstes die Nutzung von Kondomen teilweise zu erlauben. Auf seinem persönlichen Feldzug gegen die Entwicklungen unserer modernen Welt, verteilt er unbrauchbare Verhütungsmittel unter den Dorbewohnern seiner kleinen dalmatinischen Insel. Als die ungewollten Schwangerschaften zunehmen, ist es an Don Fabijan die jungen Paare in angemessener christlichen Tradition zu vermählen. Anlässlich des kroatischen EU-Beitritts präsentieren wir diesen 2012 entstandenen kroati-schen Film in Anwesenheit des Regisseurs und bitten anschließend zur Diskussion.
