To understand drug use, abuse, and addiction better, we must first understand the drugs themselves and the effects they have on individuals. Keep in mind, drugs affect individuals in different ways and the amount taken determines the overall effect.

DepressantsDepressants slow down the activity of the brain and central nervous system. Drugs in this category are com-monly known as “downers” because of their effects. De-pressants give a feeling of relaxation and are commonly used for medical purposes, such as relieving stress, calming nerves, relaxing muscles, and inducing sleep.

StimulantsStimulants are drugs that stimulate the brain and central nervous system. They usually increase alertness, ener-gy, and physical activity; they also can elevate mood and increase feelings of well-being. Stimulants are commonly known as “uppers” because of their effects. Stimulants can also accelerate one’s heart rate and elevate blood pressure. They “speed-up” or over-stimulate the body.

HallucinogensHallucinogens interfere with the brain and central ner-vous system in a way that results in radical distortions of a user’s perception of reality. In other words, they cause users to perceive things differently than they actually are. Hallucinogens affect the body’s self-control, such as speech and movement, and often bring about hostility. Other negative side effects of these drugs include heart failure, increased heart rate, higher blood pressure, and changes in the body’s hormones.

Narcotics and Opioids/OpiatesNarcotic analgesics relieve pain, induce euphoria, and create mood changes in users. Opioids/opiates are nar-cotic drugs that relieve pain and can cause drowsiness, confusion, nausea, feelings of euphoria, and respiratory complications.

Effects of Commonly Abused Drugs Club DrugsClub drugs are a loosely defined category of recreational drugs. The term refers to a wide variety of drugs often used by teens at late night parties, dance clubs, bars, and concerts. Sometimes, club drugs are used as “date rape” drugs to make someone unable to say no or fight back against sexual assault.

InhalantsInhalants encompass a wide variety of breathable substances found in or around the home or office that give off fumes or vapors at room temperature. Inhalants produce mind-altering results and effects.

CannabisCannabis is the scientific name for marijuana. The active ingredient in cannabis is delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. This is the mind-altering, pleasure-creating chemi-cal that causes individuals to get high.

The effects of marijuana can vary drastically from one person to another, depending on the amount ingested and the strength and quality of the plant. Many people who smoke marijuana3 believe that it makes them feel good and relieves the stresses of life. This effect takes place immediately. The reason for this is that THC trig-gers the release of dopamine, which creates the “good feeling” for a short period of time. This is one reason why users become dependent on it.
