Alarming Statistics3 million people in the Canada suffer from depression and over 154 million world-wide. 4000 people in Canada commit suicide due to depression with over 877,000 world wide. Over the past year, 16.5 million Americans age 18 or older - 1 in13 adults - experienced at least one bout of major depression, according to a recent government survey.

A nagging at the heart. A heavy fog. A stabbing pain. Although spiritual depression comes in different forms, it effects are usually the same-lost of zeal and sense of purpose, subdued energy, sadness, disappointment, regret, a weakened desire to do routine things, and even doubts about our usefulness to God and His plans.

Depression universally affects every humanbeing at some level or stage as it is a result

of original sin and a fallen world 1 John 5:4

Identify the Source of Depression Whether you have sudden feelings of depression or it comes on so gradually you don’t notice it until your are caught in a “fog,” you have to identify the cause of the depression. Sometimes it’s a prolonged personal struggle. Sometimes it’s Satan trying to hinder you from living for God and serving Him. But as long as you don’t identify what’s going on, the fog, the nagging, the sadness and pain—will continue.

We're made to be Overcomers As new creations in Christ, God’s children are made to be overcomers. “Yet in all thesethings we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37 NKJV).With Christ’s help, you can win the spiritual battles that plagues you.

So break free. Since Christ has set you free from a yoke of bondage to sin and other spiritual bondages (Galatians 5:1), don't allow anything to keep your heart imprisoned, including depression. Some depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, and can be treated by medication. Other depression is caused by spiritual forces, external circumstances or negative responses; and with God’s help, you can overcome whatever you are going through. The next time spiritual depression tries to imprison your heart in a perpetual state of gloom, try implementing these ways to break free. God hasn’t left His children without armour (Ephesians 6:11-18), defences (Psalm 46:1),and strategies to be over comers.

9 Ways to Overcome Depression1. Ask God to help you identify the source of the depression and have His wisdom inknowing how to deal with it. See life from God’s perspective, and remember the goodthings that He is to you and has given you.

2. Choose who you’re going to be—a victim of problems and circumstances beyondyour control or a victor in Christ who rises above problems and walks with God inpower. Resist the enemy by depending on God’s Word to refuse Satan’s tactics in yourlife. Hold on to the promises of God’s Word, and continually fill your mind with itstruths. Trust God that He has a good plan for your life and the lives of those you careabout.

3. Don’t be so focused on what’s wrong that you miss the miracles God wants to workevery day—the good things He does that only He can do. He works good out of evil andmends the brokenhearted.

Page 3: Alarming Statistics - We The Church Media · 10 Ways to Reverse Bad Moods 1. Stop yourself- Stop your negative stimulation 2. Step back- Step away from the situation 3. Steer away-

4. Remember there are people and valuable things (like love, truth, and justice) in thisworld that are worth fighting for. Remember you’re not alone in battling depressionand other people need help too—maybe even those closest to you.

5. Recognize that depression is a result of original sin and the fall and curse of thehuman race. Understand that as a believer we are not in the first Adam but the secondAdam; and that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, includingturning your depression into praise, strength and witness.

Don’t let depression steal your joy and energy. Don’t let Satan hinder your adventureswith God. And every inch you make in progressing toward victory, is worth the struggle. There’s so much to do for God while we are still on the earth. He can use us even ifwe’re battling depression. Depend on your heavenly Father who makes victory possible.Joy and adventures are waiting to be discovered. Depend on God to be your overcomer; and remind yourself daily that your body and its' feelings are not your masterbut rather the Spirit of God which resides within you, which cannot sin or be affectedby the results of sin. 1 John 3:9 “No one who is born of God will continue to sin, becauseGod's seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born ofGod”. 1 Peter 1:23 “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but ofimperishable, through the living and enduring word of God'. See yourself as God seesyou and not how you see yourself. Colossians 2:10 “So you also are complete or perfectthrough your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. Godsees you perfect in the beloved”.

Seeing ourselves properly1. Our feelings as believers don't determine the real us.“Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it”. Romans 7:20

2. Our conditions as believers don't determine our faith.“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day”. 2 Corinthians 4:16

3. Our circumstances as believers don't determine our happiness, success and worth. “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us—they help us learn to be patient. And patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady. When that happens, we are able to hold our heads highno matter what happens and know that all is well, for we know how dearly God loves us. ”Romans 5:3-5

Note: Your feelings are not the test or measurement of truth or your faith. Feelings canlead us astray if we always act the way we feel or base our decisions or lifestyles on our feelings alone. Feelings are not always objective but usually subjective to our own biases, prejudices and social conditioning. Truth and faith are based on God's universal and infallible laws of nature, conscience and morality. The ultimate bases of truth and faith is God's Word.

Jump start your day with encouragement by applying some of these practical outlines. Every negative emotion and experience can be transformed into a positive one through the power of God in your life. Resisting depression and reinforcing encouragement is like a muscle or like exercising; the more you do it the stronger you become to resist and reinforce. In the words of Ephesians 4:22-24 “you must put off and put on” “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness”.

What is encouragement?Encouragement is recognizing, accepting, and conveying faith in a person for the mere fact that he or she exists; but it never reinforces negative behaviours or lifestyles in a person. The focus is not on “good” or “bad” people but rather on positive choices and decisions. Encouragement builds up, inspire and motivates people to achieve their full potential as human beings and to choice the right path in life that leads to godliness.

Your Encouragement PlanThis personal plan and exercise will increase your gratitude and help you build a solid foundation for a lifetime of happiness and encouragement.

1. The Daily Pleasure CountPinpoint some things you are extremely grateful for and count them every morning for one mouth. eg; your abilities or looks, your children, your spouse, your family, your friends, your faith, your country, your job, your money your cat or dog etc,

Set aside a few minutes each day to contemplate these pleasures and feel gratitude for them. To really drive this home, sit down with your spouse or friend every evening and discuss one pleasure that each of you had that day.

2. One-Hour Blessings FestThe next exercise is more challenging. Spend one hour writing down everything for which you are grateful. Once the list is compiled, add one new blessing each day.

The power of this exercise is clear: You must be conscious of all your blessings in order to appreciate whatever new blessings come your way. This will build encouragement inyour life and the life of others.

3. Prioritize Your BlessingsTo become a real expert at appreciation and encouragement prioritize your list. The way to happiness and encouragement begins by embracing holiness, humility and hopefulness today. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time…and remember that time waits for no one.

So, stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school, until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds, until you have kids, until your kids leave the house,

until you start work, until you retire, until you get married, until you get divorced, until Friday night, until Sunday morning, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you are off welfare, until you die,

Say encouraging words daily becauseencouragement strengthens people.

“Encourage one another and build each other up, just as you have done before”. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

Encouraging words make a difference.Have you ever known someone who believed in you, someone who frequently spoke words of encouragement and praise? The kind of person who made you feel you could do it, whatever "it" was? That’s the kind of person God wants us to be. Paul gave a goodguideline when he wrote that everything we say should build up the one who is listening. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen”. (Ephesians 4:29).

Page 12: Alarming Statistics - We The Church Media · 10 Ways to Reverse Bad Moods 1. Stop yourself- Stop your negative stimulation 2. Step back- Step away from the situation 3. Steer away-

The phenomenon of thousands of cheering fans, becomes the home court advantage in sports contests. The book of Proverbs sums up the impact encouraging words can have when it says, "The tongue has the power of life and death" (Proverbs 18:21).

Your words have an impact. “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life” (Proverbs 10:11).

“Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the brothers” (Acts 15:32).

“We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God's fellow worker in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith” (1 Thessalonians 3:2).

“Therefore encourage each other with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:18).

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25).

Follow God's example. Be an encourager!“You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry” (Psalm 10:17).

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope” (Romans 15:4).

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus (Romans 15:5).

Think positively. Look for things to encourage.Do you bring sunshine or gloom into the room? If you are a negative person, don't say, "I'm just a worrier. I was born that way." Or, "It’s my nature to be depressed." God is in the personality-changing business. He wants you to "be conformed to the likeness of his Son" (Romans 8:29). You can change. You can become known for your encouraging words.

Page 13: Alarming Statistics - We The Church Media · 10 Ways to Reverse Bad Moods 1. Stop yourself- Stop your negative stimulation 2. Step back- Step away from the situation 3. Steer away-

Life is full of problems, and we need to deal with them. But if we aren't careful, all we see are the problems. There are lots of good things we can focus on. Instead of "catching people being bad," catch them being good. Make your words a fountain of life. Be a positive person. Encourage one another.

Ask God to help you develop a positive thought life. Immerse yourself in his Word. Pray.Over time, you will discover that you can control the way you think, choosing to focus on some thoughts and to reject others. The following verse can be life changing. Write it out and post it where you will see it regularly, on your refrigerator, bathroom mirror or the dashboard of your car.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if any-thing is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things (Philippians 4:8).

When you wake up in the morning, ask God to help you look for and focus on the positive. Pray for this attitude throughout the day. Choose to meditate on the positive. Bring sunshine into the world.

Speak positively. Be an encourager. Encourage others daily. When you talk, you make a series of choices about what subjects to discuss, what memories to bring up, and what points to make. There always are negative things you could say, but there also are positive ones. Choose the positive. Choose to specialize in encouraging words, not in critical comments. As Paul wrote, "Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification" (Romans 14:19). The following points give practical ways to be an encourager. If you would like to dig a little deeper, buy a copy of "Encouraging Your Spouse," a book for married couples with advice that can help any relationship.

Bring friendly speech into your relationships.Don't start complaining as soon as you see your spouse, child, employee, neighbor or someone else. Ask about his or her day. Give a compliment. Share stories about your day, insights from Bible study, victories on the job, or other things they may be interested in...Voice words of encouragement, appreciation, support, and respect.Acknowledge others' abilities and efforts. If someone feels inadequate, encourage him or her.

Monitor your positive and negative remarks.Learn to be self-aware and listen to what you say. Be sure you make many more positive comments than negative ones.

Page 14: Alarming Statistics - We The Church Media · 10 Ways to Reverse Bad Moods 1. Stop yourself- Stop your negative stimulation 2. Step back- Step away from the situation 3. Steer away-

Respond to problems with hope and encouragement. When someone talks about personal difficulties, do not respond with a "gloom and doom" attitude.

Listen with compassion and avoid simplistic advice. Say something such as, "I know this is a tough time for you, but it won't last. Let me encourage you: God will see you through, and I'm here to help, too."

[God] comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God (2 Corinthians 1:4).

And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone (1 Thessalonians 5:14).

Avoid subtle criticisms.Watch out for subtle ways you may tear others down, such as pointing out how quickly you can mow the lawn when you know it takes them twice as long.

Discuss problems as a friend. There are times in every relationship—in a family, on the job, or wherever—when people discuss difficult topics. When you do, speak in a courteous, friendly manner. Theway you speak usually is more important than whether your opinions are right or wrong. And don't forget to smile. A smile goes a long way to encourage others even without speaking one word.

Daily Attitude of Encouragement u

If you really want to change your outlook on life, try using these techniques to change how you deal with problems and see the world.

1. See the beauty in everything. Even if you're in the worst mood, taking the time to look at all the beautiful things that surround you in the world can provide an instant and insightful way to lift your spirits.

2. Realize that your thoughts do not own you. Stop your negative thoughts in their tracks by realizing that you're in charge of what you think, not the other way around.

3.Take time to figure out what you really want. When you feel yourself feeling negativeabout things that you haven't accomplished, take time to think if you really want those things. Finding out what is really important to you can help eliminate bad feelings over things that you don't truly want.

4. Accept the good things. Sometimes we get so caught up in the bad stuff coming our way that we forget to appreciate the good things. Take a minute to sit down and think of all the positive things that happened in your day, no matter how small.

5. Get excited about all the possibilities that lay ahead. Even in the midst of the biggest disasters there are a multitude of possibilities that await you to make changes or take on the world tomorrow.

6. Practice seeing the good in the world and in people. If you look at the world and only seem doom and gloom laid out in front of you you're not doing yourself any favors. We should shine Jesus' light on the darkness and not curse it.

7. Stop making excuses. There are always a million excuses for any person not to do something even if that something can make them feel happier. Stop putting up obstacles to your happiness and ditch those lame excuses when you hear yourself making them.

9. Don't place your future in human hands. Your future is found in God's hands and He is the only one who can give you all the desires of your heart if you seek him with your whole being.

Page 19: Alarming Statistics - We The Church Media · 10 Ways to Reverse Bad Moods 1. Stop yourself- Stop your negative stimulation 2. Step back- Step away from the situation 3. Steer away-

10. Create realistic goals. Of course you're going to feel frustrated if you make your goals so unattainable that you can't reach them no matter how hard you work. Create smaller or more realistic goals so you can feel accomplished instead of defeated each day.

11. Choose joy. Every day when you wake up you make the choice whether to be happyor miserable. Make the choice to be happy and you'll live a much more joyful life. Remember that the Joy of the Lord is our strength.

12. Believe you can change through Christ power. Everyone has qualities they don't like about themselves and that sometimes make them feel bad about themselves. Believe you can do all things through Christ as he strengthens you to replace the bad with the good. He can do all things. Nothing is impossible with God so lean on His strength and not your own.

13. Start immediately. Want to make a positive change in your life? Do it now. Putting itoff just gives you time to make excuses so get started as soon as possible.

14. Believe you deserve good things from God. If you don't truly believe that you deserve good things in your life you likely aren't going to encounter many. Believe that you are worthy for good fortune to come your way and it just might.

15. Stop letting negative thoughts control you. Negativity can be an overwhelming emotion, one that can make you feel out of control and unhappy in every aspect of your life. Put a stopper on these negative thoughts and take control of how you're feeling.

16. Smile. Sometimes all it takes to feel good is to put a smile on your face. Practice putting on a happy face even when you just feel so-so. The Bible says that a "cheerful heart is like medicine to the soul".

17. Change what you are sowing. The Bible teaches that we reap what we sow. If we want to reap happiness than we must sow the prerequisites for happiness which are; holiness, humility and hope.

18. Keep the bad out. You're in control of what you choose to let into your life. It is yourdecision to allow the fruit of the spirit or the fruit of the flesh into your life. The Bible teaches us to overcome evil with good. Replace what you don't want in your life with what you want.

Page 20: Alarming Statistics - We The Church Media · 10 Ways to Reverse Bad Moods 1. Stop yourself- Stop your negative stimulation 2. Step back- Step away from the situation 3. Steer away-

19. Make positive thinking a habit. Don't just practice thinking positively when you're feeling down. Make it an everyday occurrence whether you're in a good mood or bad. The Bible commands us to think on those things that are of good report or pleasant.

20. Look at things with fresh eyes. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to sleep on a problem so you can look at it the next day when you're not feeling so emotional

General Principles of positive Thinking and EncouragementPractice these simple exercises and suggestions to keep your thoughts on the positive side.

1. Only use positive words when talking. If you're constantly telling yourself "I can't" you may convince yourself that's the truth. Replace these negative words with positive ones instead. Tell yourself you will do your best or that you will try your hardest instead.

2. Push out all feelings that aren't positive. Don't let negative thoughts and feelings overwhelm you when you're feeling down. Even if it's only for a few hours a day, push your negativity aside and only focus on the good things in your life.

3. Use words that evoke strength and success. Try filling your thoughts with words thatmake you feel strong, happy and in control of your life. Make a concentrated effort to focus on these words rather than those that make you feel like you are failing or incompetent.

4. Practice positive affirmation based on Scripture. One of the most popular positive thinking exercises is positive affirmation. This means you repeat a positive phrase from the Scriptures to yourself on a regular basis like "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" or "With God nothing is impossible". Believing that these things are true, and reminding yourself of it can help give you have a more positive outlook on life.

5. Direct your thoughts towards God. This technique, used by psychotherapists, can help you to control your thoughts when you start to feel down or anxious. Think God's way and not your way. Create a happy thought, a positive image, or give yourself positive feedback to keep bad feelings in check.

Page 21: Alarming Statistics - We The Church Media · 10 Ways to Reverse Bad Moods 1. Stop yourself- Stop your negative stimulation 2. Step back- Step away from the situation 3. Steer away-

6. Believe you will succeed through God's power. There is nothing like believing in yourself because you have unlimited power in God to create a successful reality. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt and believe that God can do anything to help you in fulfilling your goals.

7. Analyze what went wrong. Thinking positively doesn't mean denying that there is anything wrong. Instead, give yourself some time to think about the things that led up to your current situation so you can avoid future mistakes and look toward a more positive tomorrow.

8. Give yourself credit. Often when we feel frustrated or upset we only concentrate on the bad things or the mistakes we've made instead of giving ourselves credit for what we do right. Allow yourself to feel confident about the things you have accomplished, even if you've messed up in other areas.

9. Forgive yourself. Constantly beating yourself up about things that have gone wrong won't change them. Tell yourself that you're forgiven for your mistakes and allow yourself to move on.

10. Learn from the past. The past is behind you and no matter how badly things went there is nothing you can do to change them. Whenever you feel negative thoughts about the past come up, replace them with positive thoughts about the future.

11. Remember things could be worse. No matter how bad things get remember that they could be worse and be grateful for all the good things that are in your life, even when it seems there's more bad than good.

12. Think of it as an opportunity. Sometimes even the seemingly negative things in our lives present us with opportunities we wouldn't have been strong enough to pursue otherwise. Maybe losing your job is just the chance you need to start your own business or go back to school.

13. Come up with ideas of how to turn negative thoughts into positive ones. If you find yourself thinking you should have done this or that differently, try changing your thoughts around. Instead give yourself credit for what you did do, remember that you are not perfect or that you can do better next time.

14. Visualize your goals. Picturing what you want to accomplish or the person you'd like to be can be a great motivator to getting you there and helping you feel more positive about the distance you have to go yet.

Page 22: Alarming Statistics - We The Church Media · 10 Ways to Reverse Bad Moods 1. Stop yourself- Stop your negative stimulation 2. Step back- Step away from the situation 3. Steer away-

15. Think of ways to turn faith into action. The next natural step of this is to think of just how you're going to get to where you see yourself. Just picturing it isn't going to make it happen, so create a plan of faith based on prayer and the Scriptures to take it one step at a time until you've made it.

16. Make Prayer, Worship & Praise a daily routine. Worshipping God brings about a highly conscious state of mind that is willing to follow instructions. This means you'll be more open to positive suggestions that will allow you to be happier and hopefully healthier in your life.

17. List the reasons you will get what you want. If you are having trouble believing thatyou'll get that big promotion or that your book will get published try sitting down and coming up with a list of reasons that you will get what you want rather than focusing onthe reasons you might not. Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 19:26 “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible”. Also repeat to yourself Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.

God's Armour protects us against the attacks of the enemyEphesians 6:11,12 Put on the whole Armour of God that we might be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but againstthe rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against thespiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms

God will not let us down:Isaiah 41:10 Fear not; for I am with you. Be not dismayed; for I am your God. I will strengthen you; yea, I will help you; yea, I will uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness.

Who can harm or condemn those who belong to God?Isaiah 54:17 "No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of Me", says the LORD.

We have hope in death:1 Thessalonians 4:13 Brothers and sisters, you don't have to be ignorant about those who have died because we do not grieve like people who do not have hope.

The Lord will stop the enemy:Isaiah 59:19 When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.

Why we endure:Romans 5:3b-5 ...we glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulations works patience;and patience, experience; and experience, hope: and hope makes not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

We share in Christ's glory if we share in his sufferings:Romans 8:16,17 The Spirit Itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together.

God gave us His Son, who pleads with Him for us:Romans 8:31b-34 If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifies. Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Endure temptation to receive God's wonderful and holy promises:James 1:12 Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love Him.

God cares for us and lifts us up, protecting us from the our enemy:1 Peter 5:6-8 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon Him; for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour. We have victory if we have faith:1 John 5:3,4 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.

Trouble is an opportunity for great joyJames 1:2-4 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

The $20 and the $1 JokeTwo well worn bills arrived at the Federal Reserve Bank to be retired - a twenty and a one. As they travelled down the conveyor belt, they struck up a conversation. The twenty reminisced about the interesting life he had, traveling all over the country. "I've been to the finest restaurants, Broadway shows, Las Vegas , Atlantic City ," he said. "I even went on a Caribbean cruise. Where have you been?"

"Oh," said the one dollar bill, "I've been to the Methodist church, the Episcopal church, the Lutheran church."

"What's a church?" asked the twenty.

"Well," says the man. "I was happily married to the same woman for 52 years. I never looked at another woman. I was attentive and loved her dearly."

"That's great," says St. Peter. "That'll be two points."

"Hmmm," says the man. "This is going to be harder than I thought. Well, I attended church regularly, volunteered my time and tithed faithfully."

"Wonderful," says St. Peter, "That's worth another point."

"One point!" says the man. "Okay, okay. I was involved with a prison ministry for twenty-five years. I went into the prison, at least monthly, and shared Jesus with them."

"Wow!" says St. Peter. "That's another two points!"

"Only two points!" says the man. "At this rate, it'll be only by the grace of God that'll I'll ever get into this place."

"Bingo!" says St. Peter. "That's one hundred points! Come on in."

Forest Gump and St. PeterWhen Forest Gump died, he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter said, "Welcome, Forest. We've heard a lot about you." He continued, "Unfortunately, it's getting pretty crowded up here and we find that we now have to give people an entrance examination before we let them in."

"Okay," said Forest. "I hope it's not too hard. I've already been through a test. My momma used to say, 'Life is like a final exam. It's hard.' "

"Yes, Forest, I know. But this test is only three questions. Here they are."

1) Which two days of the week begin with the letter 'T'?"

2) How many seconds are in a year?

3) What is God's first name?

"Well, sir," said Forest, "The first one is easy. Which two days of the week begin with the letter 'T'? Today and Tomorrow."

St. Peter looked surprised and said, "Well, that wasn't the answer I was looking for, but you have a point. I give you credit for that answer."

"The next question," said Forest, "How many seconds are in a year? Twelve."

"Twelve?" said St. Peter, surprised and confused.

"Yes, sir. January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd …"

St. Peter interrupted him. "I see what you mean. I'll have to give you credit for that one, too."

"And the last question," said Forest, "What is God's first name? It's Andy."

"Andy?" said St. Peter, in shock. "How did you come up with 'Andy'?"

"I learned it in church. We used to sing about it." Forest broke into song, "Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am His own."

St. Peter opened the gate to heaven and said, "Run, Forest, Run!"

When You are Troubled and DepressedPsalm 77

Introduction

When you review the great names and personalities of the Scriptures, you become aware very quickly that almost all of them knew, at one time or another, great discouragement and deep depression.

Job is singled as a man of God, blameless and upright, whose staggering losses and longand painful illness brought him low: "My days . . . come to an end without hope . . . my eye will never again see anything good." (Job 7:6, 7)

Moses is described as the meekest man on earth (Numbers 12:3) and rises as one of the greatest examples of an ordinary man who, submitted to God, became one of the greatest of all of the Old Testament characters. He was faced with the arduous task of being the leader and general answer man for over a million Hebrew people, as well as the administrator of God's Law - a role to which he was assigned by God, but one made more complicated by the tendency of the Israelites to gripe, doubt God, and attack Moses. There came a time when Moses felt the crushing weight of this assignment and at last he cries out, "How can I bear [the] troubles, burdens, and disputes [of these people] by myself?" (Deut. 1:12)

Elijah, one of the greatest prophets of old, asked for his life to be taken. David, in his efforts to hide sin, made journal entries that speak of the total loss of strength, the ebbing away of all that is worthwhile in life, and groaning all day long (Ps. 32:2ff.). Jonah, the first foreign missionary, became deeply despondent when God did not destroy Nineveh. Jeremiah was so profoundly sad that he is known to this day as the weeping prophet and confessed that he wished he'd never been born. Then there's Nehemiah and Ezekiel and Peter and more in the pages of Scripture.

The company of the depressed is a very noble company. And whether we will admit it or not, all of us have been numbered among them. Chip Ingram calls depression "the common cold of emotional disorders." All of our lips have spoken the words of discouragement and depression. All of our hearts have felt it. Every one of us has known, at one time or another, the slap of setback, the grief of loss, or the disheartening effects of stress. To be human is to feel that numbing, exhausting, de-motivating fog of depression.

And then there is a kind of depression that is even more complicated because it's triggers lie within in the form of chemical imbalance, which means we cannot escape the black hole without medical attention. Some here know the private battle of a weary sadness that can take on many forms and show itself in many ways.

What adds to the burden of the depressed and despondent is the common and misguided notion that good Christians don't get depressed.

Page 33: Alarming Statistics - We The Church Media · 10 Ways to Reverse Bad Moods 1. Stop yourself- Stop your negative stimulation 2. Step back- Step away from the situation 3. Steer away-

Any hint of depression around the church, and clichés start to surface. "You just need to have more faith" or "Remember: rejoice in the Lord always!" Or sometimes it comes off as a pep talk: "Come on, get up and get moving! Stop the pity party and pullyourself together! What will people think of God if they see you like this?"

And of course that simply pushes the depressed deeper into the hole and teaches the discouraged that unless they want to hear the cheap clichés again, they had better fake happiness. We're not going to do that this morning. Instead, I want to show you that God is closer than you think when you are troubled and depressed.

Psalm 77 is a intensely helpful passage when you're in the pit. Let me outline a few steps that give us a pattern we can follow to regain emotional equilibrium when life gets you down.

I. Send an SOS to God - vv. 1-3, 7-9

"I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, and He will hear me. In my day of trouble I sought the Lord. My hands were lifted up all night long; I refused to be comforted. I think of God; I groan; I meditate; my spirit becomes weak."

Right away we hear the hopelessness. Asaph draws pictures with words that depict desperation. For instance, the word trouble in v. 2 describes a feeling of being confined, of the walls closing in. Asaph felt like he was in a dark tunnel, only there is no light at the end. When he says his soul refuses to be comforted, he means he tried to shake this off by the normal means we all resort to, but it wasn't working. He closes v. 3saying that when he meditates - when he ponders the situation, trying to think his way through his problems - my spirit becomes weak. His emotions sabotage reason. The escape of sleep eluded him. He stretched out his hand like a drowning man, longing to be saved.

Perhaps you can identify with Asaph's feelings. But don't miss what his first response. In his battle with depression, he doesn't pretend. He doesn't bury his disillusionment. He doesn't fake happiness. There's no indication that he turned to food or shopping, alcohol or gambling, pornography or any number of other means people commonly useto cope. Instead, he got honest with God. Really honest! I cry aloud to God, aloud to God. He shouted to God. He yelled his prayer. In v. 3, he describes this further: I think of God; I groan--and the word groan can mean everything from a quiet noise to a raging explosion.

Down in v. 7-9, Asaph fills in some of the content of his prayers: "Will the Lord reject forever and never again show favor? Has His faithful love ceased forever? Is [His] promise at an end for all generations? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger withheld His compassion?"

Page 34: Alarming Statistics - We The Church Media · 10 Ways to Reverse Bad Moods 1. Stop yourself- Stop your negative stimulation 2. Step back- Step away from the situation 3. Steer away-

Asaph cycled through a wide and uncontrollable range of emotions, but he didn't try to hide that from God. He was real and reverent, honest yet humble. He asked God the hard questions that depression raises.

And we find no indication that God is put off by that kind of unvarnished truthfulness.

My friend, let the wisdom of one in the hard fellowship of the depression come to you. Don't be ashamed to admit your inner turmoil, thinking that voicing your questions will offend God. He really wants to hear from you, straight up. In fact, the Bible promises that "the LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." (Ps. 34:18)Pour out your heart, loud or soft. He's waiting to hear from you.

II. Choose to redirect your thoughts - vv. 4-6, 10-12

During one of many sleepless nights, Asaph concludes that God was keeping him awakefor a reason: "You have kept me from closing my eyes, he says in v. 4. He lay there in thesilence, unable to speak and his mind drifted back to sweeter times. Verse 5 says, I consider the days of old, years long past. At night, I remember my music; I meditate in my heart and my spirit, ponders."

Asaph deliberately focused his thoughts on those past times when God seemed so near and he could push back the darkness with song. Down in v. 10, he talks about how he did this: "Then I said, 'I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High" (ESV) "I'm going to make force my thoughts out of this dungeon back to the years when I saw God doing great things." In v. 11, he writes, I will remember the LORD'S works; yes, I will remember Your ancient wonders. I will reflect on all You have done and meditate on Your actions.

What an important step when you feel locked down by depression! Oh how you need to regain perspective! You know it to be true: when troubles crowd in and just getting up in the morning seems like a chore, where does your mind lean? It leans toward how bad it is now, and it's easy to conclude that the future will probably be too. That's whenit's important to call a mental time-out and take a long look in the rearview mirror at God's past blessings.

Chip Ingram even suggests doing what he calls "the napkin exercise." "Whenever you feel yourself starting to go downhill, put a ballpoint pen in your pocket, go to a restaurant, get a soda, and pull out a napkin. Begin to list all the specific blessings that happened that day . . . that week...that month . . . that year. These are facts, not feelings. Write down what God has done for you. List the top ten answers to prayer in your life. List five people who love you. Write down the best things that have happenedin your life." (Quoted by Chip Ingram, I Am Always With You, p. 110.)

Don't think this a pointless exercise. Remembering is a biblical prescription that is central to worship and fuels your faith in God for the future. When you mark God's faithfulness in the past, you condition your weary heart with hope for tomorrow. Send an SOS to God. Choose to redirect your thoughts in order to stoke your hope for the future.

III. Magnify God to diminish your problems - v. 13-20

There is something about worship that recalibrates the soul. But worship is not the natural instinct of the depressed person. When gloom closes in and all that once drove our life fades, we tend to want to pull the blanket over our head and bail out on God and everybody else. But Asaph willed himself to come to worship. There are deeply helpful benefits to gathering with God's people.

Kathryn Greene-McCreight, in her book Darkness is My Only Companion describes hertortured journey through ten years of extreme depression and bipolar disorder and how gathering with God's church helped her. " . . . it is so important to worship in community - to ask your brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for you . . . Sometimes you literally cannot make it on your own, and you need to borrow from the faith of those around you. Companionship in the Lord Jesus is powerful."

Asaph concentrates on the benefits that come from God Himself in v. 13ff. First he proclaims God's holiness: "God, Your way is holy (that is, unique, one-of-a-kind, set apart from the ways of men). What god is great like God? Down in v. 16-18, he throws down the gauntlet against the false Canaanite gods of the sea, the thunder and the storm. "The waters saw You, God. The waters saw You; they trembled. Even the depths shook. The clouds poured down water. The storm clouds thundered; Your arrows flashed back and forth. The sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind; lightning lit up the world. The earth shook and quaked.

This doesn't sound like the downcast Asaph we started with, does it? Worship moved him from a self-imploded funk to a God-enthralled declaration of faith!

Then in v. 14, Asaph extols the miracle-working power of God: "You are the God who works wonders; You revealed Your strength among the peoples”. He cites the exampleof God's deliverance of Israel from the Egyptian army through the Red Sea in v. 19-20: "Your way went through the sea, and Your path through the great waters; but Your footprints were unseen. You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron." God is holy. And God is able. He has no trouble altering the natural order of things if necessary to deliver you.

Finally, Asaph locks in on God's redemption of His people in v. 15: "With power You redeemed Your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph." God cares for me. He knows what's happening in me and to me. He has the supernatural ability to do all that is necessary to fulfill His promises, and He loves me enough to come after me.

Conclusion

Asaph began with a huge problem and a little God; but he kept sending up SOSs to God.He forced himself to rehearse the past blessings of God's faithfulness, where hope for the future is strengthened. And he worshipped. For Asaph, God is big, and his problemsaren't. Now it's your turn!
