• In1978,Dr.AbronfoundedanengineeringfirmcalledPEERConsultants,PC.SheisalsotheCEOofhercompany.

• ASadoctorsheexcelsbothinthehospitalaswellasinthelecturehallsteachingthosethatwouldliketofollowinherfootsteps.

• Zulaika’sverylargefamilyplayedaroleinherbecomingamedicaldoctor.Shewasbornintoahouseholdoftensiblings,andthisgaveherthelovingandcaringnaturewhichallowshertobeanexemplarydoctorandprofessor.

• Withherpassionforneonatology,Dr.AlisetupandheadedthefirstneonatalintensivecareunitinTrinidadandTobago.

• ShewasalsoresponsibleforthedevelopmentoftheUWITelehealthProgramme.Thisprogrammealloweddoctorstohaveconsultationswithchildrenwhowerenotabletocomeseetheminperson.Itusedvideo-conferencingtechnologywherealivefeedalloweddoctorstoassesschildren.Thussickchildrendidnothavetodealwiththeburdenoftravelingabroad.

• Afterstudyingabroad,shewentbacktoLesothoandtaughtattheuniversitybeforeshejoinedRhodesUniversityinSouthAfricain1992asalecturer.Sheworkedefficientlyanddemonstratedqualitywork,whichallowedhertoclimbtheacademicladderandeventuallybecomeaprofessor.

• Shehasaresearchlabattheuniversity;andhereshementorsotherbuddingchemists(especiallywomen)andperformsgroundbreakingresearch.

• Thiswarriornurse,wastheonlywomanmemberontheteamoftheCommonwealthGroupofEminentPersonswhoweresenttoSouthAfricatodiscussthereleaseofNelsonMandelafromprison.

• TereraiwasacceptedintoOklahomaStateUniversityin1998.WiththesupportHeifer,hermotherandothermembersofthecommunity,shewasabletotakeherwholefamilyincludingherhusbandtoAmericatostartlivingoutherdreams.

ShealsoworkedwithcommitteesthatcollectedhealthmaterialsandshippedthemtoherbirthcountryofHaiti.Inherretirement,shestarted2scholarshipsattheUniversityofOttawa.OnewasforHaitianstudentnursestocompletetheirbaccalaureateinnursingscience;makingitpossibleforthemtowriteexamstobeabletopracticenursinginCanada.ThesecondwastohelpHaitianprofessionals(doctors,engineersetc.)getacertificateineducationsothatcouldqualifytogetalicensetoworkinOntario.HerAchievements,honoursandawardsLapierrehasbeenexceptionalinhersupporttohercommunityandbeyond.Shehasreceivedgreatrecognitionforthisasisseeninthelistofachievementsbelow.

• ThroughMunicipalorder,inOctober2008,October25thwasdeclared“MrythaLapierreDay”inhonourofherphilanthropicwork.

• In2006,shereceivedtheYWCA“WomanofDistinction”award.

• Inboth2000and2004,shewasfeaturedinthebookWho’sWhoinBlackCanada.

• AppointedtotheOrderofOntarioinrecognitionofhercommunityleadership.
